Looking back on a Winter Field Day event, Ralph Hess, president of Red Rose Repeater Association (RRR), recalled a story about a gentleman, a newcomer to the hobby, who helped him set up antennas for amateur, ham for short, radio operation. “We got the antenna hooked to the radio, and I threw out my call sign and a (ham) got back to me from Poland,” said Hess, who added that the gentleman was astounded. “He said, ‘That piece of wire I just touched let you talk to Poland?’” Hess relayed. Hess used an internet program to confirm the contact.

The 2023 event, presented by a partnership between RRR and the Winter Field Day Association, will be held at the Welsh Mountain Community Center and Park, 564 Sandmine Road, New Holland. The group will begin to set up antennas at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, and the event will officially begin at 2 p.m. Winter Field Day

will end at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 29. The event is held for 24 hours to include radio operators from all time zones. Newly licensed and inexperienced operators as well as those with an interest in the hobby are encouraged to attend. There is no cost to participate, and visitors are welcome to drop in anytime and bring sleeping bags or cots if they plan to stay overnight in the center.

“I

almost guarantee

will find someone outside the U.S. to talk to.”

Several seminars will be offered during the event. At 10 a.m. on Jan. 28, Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES) will give a presentation. Hess noted that the organization practices emergency drills for the closed Three Mile Island and the functioning Peach Bottom nuclear power plants because ham radios continue to

operate when cellphones cannot and in areas where cell services may be limited.

Additional workshops will instruct attendees in how to build three types of two-meter antennas and one HF (high frequency) antenna. There is a nominal fee to build antennas to cover the costs of materials.

Presently, there are 50 licensed ham radio operators in the New Holland ZIP code and more than 1,500 in the county. Hess believes a chance to converse internationally attracts many to the hobby. “We will be operating under our club call sign, so … anybody can come up and operate,” he said. “I can almost guarantee we will find someone outside the U.S. to talk to.” Hess noted that many visitors react positively to hearing a voice from another country over the radio. “People’s faces just light up,” he said.

Participants at Challenger Clubsmonthly Bible studies for individuals age 15 and up with physical or intellectual disabilities – do not always express their enjoyment of the experience verbally. “A grandmother told me recently that her grandson, who (shows little emotion) around his family, is so excited to attend,” said Meghan Martin, disability ministries assistant, HandiVangelism Ministries International (HVMI), which oversees the clubs.

“There are so many smiles.”

When Keith Cotton, director of outreach with Servants Inc., looks for volunteers, carpentry, HVAC, and plumbing skills are not necessarily a requirement. “Physical (home) repairs are important, but we also put an emphasis on building relationships,” said Cotton of Servants Inc., an organization that performs home repairs and construction for those in need.

“I think one of the things a lot of our clients are facing, in addition to the physical hardship of needing home repairs, is loneliness,” Cotton pointed out, adding that many clients are widowed people or single mothers.

HVMI has run Challenger Clubs at several Ephrata-area churches, including New Joy and Highpoint, along with the HVMI offices at 300 W. Chestnut St., Ephrata, and private residences, for several years. Now, the organization has expanded to the area south of Route 30 with a new

club, which began serving residents of the greater Paradise area in October 2022. The Challenger Club at Calvary Monument Bible Church, 1660 Mine Road, Paradise, meets the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. The club will continue to meet through April.

Martin said each club meeting begins with worship, followed by a Bible lesson and often a skit to enhance understanding of the lesson, and a memory verse. During small group time, participants work on a booklet, which can be taken home at the end of the year, focused on life applica-

tion of the lesson. Martin shared that the lessons are structured to be more palatable to participants. “We write our own curriculum, and we are able to write in a way that we know has been successful in the past,” she said. “Parents can see the growth in their kids when they see them understanding and answering questions. It’s a different aspect that parents don’t always see.” Martin noted that parents may drop their children at the club or they are welcome to stay.

“The respite piece is something we like to offer,” she pointed out.

According to Martin, volunteers are needed to work with HVMI staff aiding participants at each meeting. “(Volunteers) may help with small group time or take part in the skit,” she said.

The Bible clubs are an extension of HVMI’s summer program, which provides uniquely designed camping experiences for individuals with disabilities.

“A lot of places provide fun activities for adults with disabilities, but our goal is to focus on a Bible lesson,” explained Martin, who added that many participants enjoy the club so much they cannot wait to return. “We have a girl who just moved (to the Paradise area) with her family, and she has come to every meeting,” said Martin. “She was walking out the door after the last meeting, and she said to her mother, ‘What’s the date for the next one so I can put it on my calendar?’” reported Martin.

Readers who would like to learn more about HVMI may visit www.hvmi.org. Individuals who want to know more about volunteering or participation in a club may call 717859-4777 or email mmartin@hvmi.org.

A virtual S.A.V.E. Training on Suicide Prevention will be offered on Tuesday, Jan. 24, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. via the Webex platform.

Suicide prevention is the top clinical priority for Veterans Affairs (VA), and the VA seeks to connect veterans who are experiencing an emotional or mental health crisis with lifesaving support. The VA seeks to involve veterans’ family members, peers, and communities so people can work together to reach veterans before a crisis occurs.

The upcoming training is designed to give caregivers key information about suicide prevention, the warning signs for suicide risk, and where to get help. S.A.V.E. encourages

caregivers to act with care and compassion if they encounter a suicidal veteran. S.A.V.E. stands for signs of suicidal thinking, ask questions, validate the person’s experience, and encourage treatment and expedite getting help.

To register, visit https://tinyurl.com/save training. Once individuals register, they will be sent the meeting link and other signin information to join via a computer, phone, or other smart device. Attendees may download the Webex app to participate, or they may join via telephone.

The Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley (HSCV) will hold its annual Show and Tell on Wednesday, Jan. 25, at 7 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 167 E. Main St., Ephrata. This event begins a new year of educational programs. Attendees are invited to share their unique trea-

sures and the stories behind them.

This program is free and open to the public. The parking lot and entrance are located off the alley to the rear of the church. For more details, call 717-733-1616. Information about the HSCV is also available at www.cocalicovalleyhs.org.

“(They are) people who need support in general,” said Cotton. “For that reason, the organization’s volunteer application asks candidates to rate their skill levels, but Cotton commented that this is not meant to exclude anyone. “It just gives us a better idea where we can plug people in, so they can feel useful,” he

explained. The application helps Servants Inc. put teams together and pair willing learners with those who have the ability to teach. There’s a need for skilled workers as well. “We have some intense projects that involve plumbing and framing,” Cotton said. Servants Inc., which now has a full-time project manager in Lancaster County, is mostly active in the ELANCO area as well as Columbia and Marietta. During the week, Thursday is the designated volunteer workday, but Saturdays are scheduled to accommodate working volunteers and students. Right now, volunteers are needed as the organization’s client list is growing. “It’s a delicate balance,” said Cotton of expanding the client and volunteer lists at the same time.

Since opening a Lancaster

County branch, a few years ago, the nonprofit has formed a partnership with CrossNet Ministries in New Holland. “(CrossNet) does intake applications … for the services we provide,” said Cotton.

Marilyn Guzmán, social services program manager with CrossNet, reported that one family feared losing its home due the building’s condition.

“We prayed, and God sent us a miracle in the form of men and women who work with and volunteer with Servants,” family members told Guzmán, noting that the volunteers were kind and understanding.

“Just knowing we now have a safe home helps us sleep better at night, they told her.

Servants Inc. has also partnered with ELANCO Connect, which includes several greater Bowmansville area churches. Servants Inc. is hoping to pro-

vide a local half-week work camp experience during the summer months. The organization has also become involved in the Pequea Valley School District First Choice Discovery Program, a workbased program offering career exploration and mentoring to every sophomore, to introduce students to developing home repair skills.

The organization, which has branches in York and Adams counties, completed more than 110 projects and had more than 10,000 volunteer hours total in 2022. Servants Inc. also sends recovery teams to areas of the U.S. hit by disasters as well as organizing international missions teams. Those who wish to volunteer may visit www.servants.org and click on the “Volunteer” tab or call 717-378-0336.

Like many 8-year-olds, Viola Rothacker loves animals. She even has a favorite pet, but it’s not furry or fourlegged. It’s a Mexican kingsnake named Dandelion. She’s completely comfortable around snakes, lizards, turtles and other creatures, handling them like a pro, because loving reptiles is in her DNA. Her father, Jesse Rothacker, operates Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary out of his home in Manheim.

Jesse started Forgotten Friend in 2004. “I knew there were a lot of people looking for a place to rehome reptiles,” he said, noting that many people underestimate how large reptiles will grow as well as their long lifespan. He realized that places like Humane Pennsylvania couldn’t easily take in reptiles since their shelters were already full of cats and dogs. “I know people love reptiles, and I knew there was a need for a rescue,” Jesse recalled. “I thought, ‘I can start one.’”

Jesse, who grew up in southern California but

moved to Lititz as a teen, has been a lifelong reptile fan. “In the ’90s as a teenager, I got my first pet snake, Leon,” he stated. “I loved him, and I took him everywhere.” In fact, he even got a detention at Warwick High School, where he graduated in the Class of 2000, for bringing Leon to school without permission.

In the early days of Forgotten Friend, he took in every reptile he could, with the hopes of rehoming them all. As the rescue grew, he shifted gears to refer people or provide information on their reptile, although he still takes in some animals. His business, now a nonprofit, receives most of its funding from the live shows Jesse offers - often accompanied by Viola and her brother, Kenny, 12 - at local schools, churches, libraries and birthday parties. “We did 275 live shows this past year,” Jesse said.

Although both kids help with the shows, and Jesse’s wife, Kim, is a patient supporter of Jesse’s passion, it’s Viola who has really blossomed in the business, Jesse said.

Maintaining a healthy weight is believed to promote long-term health, while being overweight or obese can be a risk factor for various conditions, including Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The World Health Organization reports that the worldwide obesity rate has tripled since 1975. In 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults were overweight. Of these, more than 650 million were obese.

Health issues related to obesity are largely preventable. Losing weight in a healthy manner is essential for safe and lasting results, and individuals aspiring to lose weight may consider the following guidelines on what to do and what not to do.

DO add lean protein sources to your diet. Healthline indicates the body burns calories when digesting and metabolizing protein, so a high-protein diet can help to shed up to 80 to 100 calories per day. Protein also helps you to feel full, reducing the propensity to overeat.

DON’T get hung up on numbers early on. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises that even modest weight loss of 5% to 10% of your total body weight can produce health benefits, such as improvements in blood sugar levels, cholesterol and blood pressure. Start small and gradually build up.

DO eat at least four servings of vegetables and three servings of fruits daily. Produce contains an abundance of vital nutrients and is often fiber-rich and low in calories, which helps you to feel full.

DON’T overlook the impact of beverages on weight loss. The calories in sugary beverages, including some all-natural fruit juices, can add up quickly. Stick to water, tea or other unsweetened beverages to help with weight loss.

DO get moving more. The Mayo Clinic notes that while it is possible to lose weight without exercise, getting moving can help burn the excess calories you can’t cut through diet alone. Exercise

boosts metabolism, benefits mood and strengthens muscles and the cardiovascular system, as well.

DON’T go shopping while hungry. If you do, you may make impulse buys that compromise healthy eating plans.

DO speak with a doctor if you are comparing diet and exercise plans. A health care professional can indicate if a particular diet or fitness routine is acceptable for your age, goals and current health status.

“She shares my view on reptiles,” he stated. “Ever since I was little, if I saw a reptile, I wanted to get closer.”

By age 1, Viola was making television appearances with her dad, and he proudly shows off a video of Viola at about age 3, crying while Jesse records a large blood python. “She’s crying because I wouldn’t let her pet it,” he said.

Viola loves helping her father with reptile care (they grow their own roaches and large mealworms for feeding their brood) and visiting the reptiles that live in the family’s basement.

“I really like to hold the animals,” Viola shared, noting

that she also enjoys teaching others about the often-misunderstood creatures. “I like to tell people, ‘It’s OK. It’s not going to hurt you.’”

Jesse cautions that reptiles require respect when interacting with them and noted that he’s been bitten “thousands” of times, but that hasn’t dimmed his desire to help reptiles.

“Reptiles are magical and mysterious,” he said. “They’re quiet, but if you look into their eyes, there is a light on in the attic.”

Weight Loss

DON’T forget to track eating. Most healthy diets involve some sort of caloriecounting, whether they actually require you to document your intake or use a formula to attribute “points” or another measure related to what you eat. Writing or tracking the foods and beverages you consume will provide the most honest assessment of habits that could affect weight loss.

frompg 6

DO include foods you enjoy. Completely restricting access to occasional treats may cause you to resent healthy eating, which can derail weight loss goals. The principle of moderation can apply to healthy weight loss as long as you account for the more calorie-dense foods.

Losing weight in a healthy manner is achievable when you seek guidance and follow some time-tested techniques.

Spot Tops Warwick After Loss To Kennard-Dale

The Spartans regained momentum in the fourth quarter of their home game with Kennard-Dale in boys’ basketball action. But the only epiphany for the Spartans in the January 6 non-league game was that opportunities need to be taken advantage of in the crunch.

“They turned the ball over a few times in the fourth quarter, but we came away empty,” Nate Musselman, the Garden Spot head coach, explained. “We made many empty trips in the final minutes and they made a few key free throws to ice the game.”

Kennard-Dale held on for a 57-46 win. They inched ahead in the third quarter, increasing a slim four-point halftime lead to 43-32.

Jace Conrad led the Spartans (3-8) in scoring. He put up 11 points including a pair of threepoint baskets. Zachary Uplinger, who also dropped a pair of treys, and Bruce Weaver, who was a perfect 4-for-4 in free throws, both finished with eight points. Michael Heisley scored seven for the Spartans.

“It was a back-and-forth game,” Musselman added. “They made some shots down the stretch.”

Garden Spot bounced back with a victory over LancasterLebanon League foe Warwick on Tuesday. They poured in 27 points in the fourth quarter, pulling off a 58-56 win at New Holland.

The offensive output late in the game only balanced things out, rewarding the Spartans’

great defensive play.

“Defense was the key,” Musselman said. “But we did make 13 three-pointers, which I think is a league high this year.

“However, when you look at the scorebook, we gave up 20 in the first quarter and only 12 the next three,” the coach continued. “Our defense kept us in the game.”

Uplinger was on target six times from three-point range, finishing with a game-leading 20 points. Jeff St. Jean scored 11 points with nine coming off his three treys. Weaver scored eight. Heisley (6 pts) also nailed a pair of treys.

Trevor Evans scored 18 to lead the Warriors, who fell to 8-4 (3-1 league).

“We had a couple of seniors really rise up to the challenge,” Musselman said, referring to Uplinger, Heisley and Dylan Nolt.

The close margin of victory was a reversal of the Garden Spot boys’ fortune.

“Besides the Kennard-Dale game and the Manheim Central game, every one of our games has been six points or less for this young group,” Musselman said, “We’re hoping the kids are believing in what we’re teaching them and believing in each other.”

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Garden Spot came up short at Warwick in a girls’ L-L League game on Tuesday, January 10. The Warriors outscored the Spartans 23-14 in the first half and held on for a 45-25 victory.

Natalie Wenger scored 18 for the Warriors while Bella

Smithson added 12.

Morgan Pavelik led Garden Spot with seven points. Meredith Horst and Gwen Varley each tallied six points.

The Spartans, who fell to 113 (0-4 league) were coming off a non-league contest at Manheim Township on Saturday, January 7. The Blue Streaks took command in the second quarter of the game and won 77-37.

Township led by a slim 1614 margin after the first quarter. Ava Byrne led the Streaks with 21 points.

Pavelik had the hot hand for Garden Spot, pouring in 17 points. Varley nailed three treys and compiled 11 points while Nikki Zeiset came away with six points.

AIR RIFLE

The Spartans won back-toback matches, defeating Governor Mifflin and Ephrata in L-L League air rifle competition. They scored 493 points in both victories.

In the January 10 match at Ephrata, Magdalene Martin hit a perfect 100 with Matt Sauder providing plenty of support at 99 points. Evan Brace, Jack Werner, and Leksi Bender each shot 98’s.

The Mountaineers’ Bill Brudereck and Catherine Wolf also finished with 98’s.

In the Mifflin match on Thursday, January 5 at New Holland, Bender was the Spartan marksman hitting the century mark while Sauder and Martin both finished with 99. Werner’s 98 points and 97 from sophomore Trevor Jones helped the Spartans edge the Mustangs 493-492

Mifflin teammates - Jim Gossert, Joe Kawalski and Anya Zadlo - shot 99’s on the day.

WRESTLING

Garden Spot got out to a 24-9 lead in the Section Two match with Donegal on Wednesday, January 11. The Indians came back with a couple of close decisions plus a Garden Spot forfeit to win the match 36-24.

Jayden Redcay and Donegal’s Sergio Garcia went head-to-head at the 172-pound class. Garcia came away with a 7-4 win.

Blake Weaver defeated the older Garcia brother, registering a pin over Scott Garcia at 189. Tyler Hurst’s pin put the Spartans’ up 12-3.

With a Donegal pin and a pair of Donegal forfeits, the Spartans built a 24-9 lead.

Diego Portales came out on the short end of a 4-2 decision at 127 and the Indians’ Mark Overlander, at 133, won with a 7-2 decision.

The 139-pound bout went to double overtime until Landon Keller defeated Josiah Smucker 6-4 to cut the Spartans’ lead to 24-18.

The Spot forfeit at 145 evened the score. Two pins by the Indians made it 36-24 for the final.

On the strength of seven pins, Garden Spot dominated Reading 57-3 in a non-league wrestling match on Thursday, January 5. The Spartans opened with three straight pins and were also aided by a Reading forfeit at the 172pound weight class.

Portales and Allen opened the match with pins in their respective weight classes of 127 and 133. Smucker notched a pin 55 seconds into the 139-pound bout, making it 18-0 Garden Spot.

Sean Kelch regained the momentum following a 10-3 decision for the Red Knights at 152. Kelch needed 1:06 to pin Rooney Delarosa in the 160 bout. Sandwiched between Kelch’s pin and Blake Weaver’s (189) was a Reading forfeit.

Tyler Hurst (215) and Mason Musser (285) kept things rolling, each registering a fall to extend Spot’s lead

to 48-3.

Myra Bair’s pin at 107 came one second prior to the end of the match - at the 5:59 mark. Matt Casey earned a 6-4 decision over Nathan Weiss (121) to wrap things up.

BOWLING

Manheim Central’s Jesse Hurst compiled a 628 series to lead the Barons to a 7-0 victory over Spot on Wednesday, January 11 in L-L League bowling competition.

Gavin Courtney rolled a 222 in his first game and 244 in his second game.

The Spartans fell to 19-23 on the year.

“Creatures: Some MythicalVisual Meets Sonic Art” is a work created by adjunct professor Rusty Banks, composer and

guitarist; Dan Zdilla, collage artist; and Andy Babin, projections designer. Banks conceived the work as an instrumental piece for classical guitar and surround sound electronics. Each movement depicts a real or imaginary creature everpresent in Banks’ childhood conscience, such as the firefly, hellbender and doodle bug.

After viewing an exhibit of Zdilla’s collages in a local

gallery, Banks approached him about creating works based on the creatures. The results are six works made entirely from pieces cut from copies of National Geographic Magazine. Zdilla deconstructed the original found imagery into scraps and bits of formal elements such as color, value and texture and then reassembled these elements into new images.

Babin, with tech support from 4-Wall Entertainment, created animations to be projected behind the performer using high-resolution scans of Zdilla’s works. The overall effect is like walking into the collages and exploring the landscape within. The music ranges from ambient to experimental to lyrical, with the sounds of the classical guitar sometimes altered and moving throughout the space, such as from the front of the audience to the back of the room.

Banks was born in Jasper, Ala., and lives in Lancaster. His compositions have been performed in Asia, Europe, Canada and Mexico, as well as throughout the U.S. Besides writing concert music for ballet, orchestra, wind ensemble and other acoustic ensembles, Banks designs pieces that use traditional performers, user-end electronics and video within dynamic audio/video installations.

Zdilla is an artist, musician and teacher from Lancaster. He works in collage, creating naturalistic imagery that is at times representational or allegorical. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in art education from Millersville University.

Known internationally as a lighting and video designer for live events, Ephrata native Babin has had his work included in performances by the Foo Fighters as well as The Weeknd’s halftime performance at the 2021 NFL championship.

Cattle Feeders Day Planned

A Lancaster County wintertime staple with a run time of 54 years, the annual Cattle Feeders Day is slated for Tuesday, Jan. 24, and will again bring information to area cattle producers.

Hosted at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, the event will include workshops such as “FDA Regulatory Changes for Antibiotic and Implant Usage” by Hayley Springer, assistant research professor with Penn State Extension, and Tara Felix, associate professor of animal science with Penn State Extension. Blaine Corners, a senior nutritionist at Beef Strategic Technical Services, will discuss “Managing High-Risk Cattle in the Feedlot,” and Garren Bellis, a consultant with Compass Ag Solutions, will give a workshop titled “Livestock Risk Protection (LRP): Price Floors for Your Cattle.” A regular at Cattle Feeders Day, Colin Woodall, CEO of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, will return this year to present “America Has Spoken … What the 2022 Election Means for Your Operation.”

After industry updates, the lunch break will offer attendees the opportunity to visit the trade show and talk with the speakers. Also on Cattle Feeders Day, beef quality assurance recertification will be available.

The ticket price includes lunch. Space is limited. To purchase tickets, visit https://extension.psu.edu/ cattle-feeders-day or call 877-345-0691. Walk-ins on the day of the event are also welcome. For further information on program content, contact Cheryl Fairbairn at 610-696-3500.
