Reaching out to space Red Rose Repeaters schedule Winter Field Day BY ANN MEAD ASH

lex Van Patten, public information officer with Red Rose Repeater Association (RRR), is looking forward to holding the organization’s annual Winter Field Day, and he would like to make contact with the International Space Station during that event. “We are hoping to utilize the International Space Station and other satellites that have radios on board,” said Van Patten, who noted that the two entities have connected in the past. “I can’t guarantee that will happen again, but it was a nice surprise when it did.” Van Patten added that a number of astronauts currently on the space station have their amateur radio license. The 2024 event, presented by RRR, will be held at the Welsh Mountain Community Center and Park, 564 Sandmine Road,

New Holland. The group plans to begin setting up antennas at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27, and the event will officially begin at 2 p.m. Winter Field Day will end at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 28. The event is held for 24 hours to

include radio operators from all time zones. Newly licensed and inexperienced operators as well as those with an interest in the hobby are encouraged to attend. There is no cost to participate, and visitors are welcome to drop

in anytime and bring sleeping bags or cots if they plan to stay overnight in the center. Special workshops to instruct attendees in a particular skill are always a highlight of the event. “We will have stations to help

people learn to solder small electronics,” said Van Patten. “That’s a ver y hands-on (activity).” Soldering stations will open at 2 p.m. and remain open for the duration of the event. “We will also deep fry a turkey,” See RRR pg 3

More than cute - a commitment and a variety of factors, and the commitment continues for up to 20 years depending on the pet. “I wish people would better manage the expectation that they will walk in and find a pet for them,” March pointed out. “Pets are not universal. They have wide-ranging personalities, and finding a good match for you is not always easy.” To foster more successful pet ownership, Humane Pennsylvania seeks to counsel would-be pet owners with questions about lifestyle, time and interest in working with a pet, and expenses. March noted that getting a

Steven and Allycia Barr of Leola have a dream. Someday, they would like to own a farm with the space and facilities to bring in families that are dealing with addiction and teach vocational skills. The dream was born of a hard reality. When the Barrs’ son, Steel, was born in Philadelphia in May of 2019, the couple was homeless and addicted, living in the back of a box truck in a friend’s driveway. The hospital where Steel was born gave Allycia the opportunity to go directly to a rehab program following his birth.

“When (Allycia) left the hospital and went right to rehab, I was left in the box truck,” recalled Steven. “(I wish) there had been somewhere we could have gone together,” said Allycia, who believes treatment as a family would have led to healing together more quickly. Allycia is several years clean, and Steven graduated from Restart Training Center Ministry in Strasburg in August of 2021. They now live in Leola - working and raising their son together - but the dream is not far from their minds. “Long-term we would like to have a property - (a place to address) emotional traumas that need to See Hearts to help pg 2

“There are so many things to consider when adopting a pet,” said Damon March, director of operations for Humane Pennsylvania, which oversees the Lancaster Center for Animal Life-Saving on Route 30 as well as the Freedom Center for Animal Life-Saving in Reading. “Those who have never been the primary caretaker, it’s difficult to see everything. We discourage people from making a snap decision.” Different types of pets require different levels of care as do the individual pets, based on age

Humane Pennsylvania from pg 1 puppy is probably the most challenging of pet adoptions, pointing out that those who like to t rav e l s p o n t a n e o u s l y might do better with a lower-maintenance cat. Training, both house training and behavior modification, is most important and time-consuming with puppies. “Housebreaking (is) a pretty major thing, but there are other things, and one of the most important is the general manners,” emphasized March, who noted that laying down house rules from the first day and e n fo rc i n g t h e m 2 4 / 7 is ke y. “ W hen p e ople r e t u r n p u p p i e s , i t ’s because they underestimated how much work those general behaviors would be,” he said. “One of the bigger mistakes with a very young puppy is to delay the beginning of that training. As dogs mature, allowing behaviors to persist can lead t o re a l l y u n d e s i ra b l e behaviors such as barking or growling over food or treats.” March recommended working with a trainer in person, online, or by video. “That second set of eyes can give you valuable reasons for the®

behavior,” he noted. S ome t i mes ne w p e t owners are not prepared for the costs associated with the animal’s care a n d fe e d i n g . M e l i s s a Detrick, owner and administrator of Honey Brook Animal Hospital, said that knowing what is best to feed a particular animal is important, but that owners should a l s o b e p r e p a r e d fo r the costs of first-year visits, which may include vacc i n at i o n s , ne u te ring, and preventatives. Pet-sitting and grooming expenses will come into play with certain types of pets, as well. “My advice to pet owners, especially new pe t owners , is multifaceted,” said Detrick. “Do the research before taking the leap.” Detrick pointed out that practicing preventive care combined with a balanced diet and maintaining a good relationship with the animal’s vet is all important. She also recommended considering pet insurance. According to March, when a relationship does not work out between a pet and an owner, the problem often lies with the owner’s perspective. “Most of the time it’s because the caretaker failed to manage expectations for the situation,” said March, who noted that owners may think that an experience with an animal will be similar to a past pet experience or a friend’s or relative’s pet experience. “ That’s why relationships fail,” he noted. be healed,” Steven said, noting that often violence and trust issues accompany addiction. “People know the whole dynamic of their lives needs to change,” he said. T he B ar rs k now the length of the road that needs to be traveled when families tackle mental health issues and trauma. Allycia traces her initial steps on that path to a Florida jail cell in the spring of 2016. “I met Jesus during that jail stay,” recalled Allycia, whose aunt and uncle in Mechanicsburg brought her to Pennsylvania to start over. She remained with them for eight months before moving to Tyrone. While living there, she met Steven online. When the pair was evicted from his apartment, they moved to his parents’ home in Narber th. Two months later, they were living on the streets with only backpacks of clothes and Steven’s motorcycle. “That was our life for two years,” said Allycia. After Steven’s motorcycle was stolen, they moved into the box truck. S te el was a miracle, according to Allycia, who did not think she would be able to have children. His arrival prompted Allycia to beat her addiction and return to her aunt and uncle’s home. Steven struggled for some time afterward, finally finding acceptance at Restart in February of 2021. Allycia, her aunt and uncle, and a church the couple attended in Dillsburg paid his tuition. “He hit his breaking point,” recalled Allycia. Steven said that he knew

he was going to die if he did not go into a program. He and Allycia were married at Celebration Community Church in Dillsburg a month before he graduated with both Celebration’s pastor Mike Hammer and Jaime Santiago, director of Restart, officiating. Steven was invited to join the Restart staff after graduating, and the family moved to Leola in December of 2021. Both are currently trying to start their own businesses - Steven working with motorcycles and Allycia encouraging healthy eating. They have also made more than five trips to McPherson Square Park, often referred to as Needle Park because of the drug use that takes place there, in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia. There they cook hot dogs and give out beverages and chips in hopes of starting conversations with the recipients. Steven is involved with the Midnight Riders Ministry, a motorcycle outreach overseen by the Rev. Jerry Conley. Looking ahead, the pair sees the value of working with families rather than just individuals to facilitate healing. “Even if only one (parent) is a drug addict, the other doesn’t trust them. T here are likely codependency and boundary issues … and think of the trauma the children have been living. They all need a place to go to build trust and boundaries over again,” Allycia said. “When the families are on board, there’s a team of people asking (the addict) to do something different.”

said Van Patten, who noted that the plan is for the gobbler to go into the oil bath at 1 p.m. on Jan. 27. “People like to deep fry things,” he added. Presently, there are 50 licensed amateur radio operators in the New Holland ZIP code and more than 1,500 in the county. T h i s i s t h e 9 1 s t ye a r “hams” - as amateur radio enthusiasts are often called - have used Field Day to demonstrate radio’s ability to create reliable communications independent of commercial networks from almost anywhere. Since 1933, amateur radio operators across North America have established temporary radio stations in public locations during Field Day

to showcase the science and skill of amateur radio. During Winter Field Day, club members will work to contact other clubs in the U.S. and amateur radio operators abroad. “We will converse internationally,” said Van Patten, who added that the event will be interactive. “The purpose is to showcase our hobby to the public and invite them to come down and see what we are all about,” he stated. “We want to be able to get (visitors) on the air. If they want to try operating the radios, we can walk them through it.” For more information about Field Day or amateur radio, visit https://w3rrr .org/ or email W3AVP @arrl.net.

Topic: A Long Obedience in the Same Direction

ENTER OUR DRAWING!

One new family will win half price tuition for two school years!

From Doug: The life of discipleship is “A Long Obedience in the Same Direction.” The journey begins when we recognize who God is and who we are and call to Him as Psalm 130 discusses. My thought is to use my life’s journey to illustrate the life of obedience which includes moments of victory, moments of defeat, moments of loss, and moments of joy. Doug Myer began his management career with WDAC Radio Company in 1999 and currently oversees all operations. He is a graduate of the Moody Bible Institute and Lancaster Bible College, where he met his wife, Janet. They live in Strasburg and have three children and three grandchildren and counting.

Landis Valley posts classes, membership offer

Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, has posted upcoming homeschool classes. These activities will be held on Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. “Mirror, Mirror” will offer an opportunity to learn the background and technique of reverse glass, a folk art that was popular during the late 1800s. Students will also complete a painting during this activity on Feb. 15. This class is for children ages 8 to 11. Students ages 5 to 11 may participate in “The Birds and the Seeds” on March 7. Designed as an introduction to gardening, the program will offer activities such as learning about garden tools and how to plan a garden, visiting the Heirloom Seed Project and learning about seed saving, and exploring the outdoors through bird watching. To register, visit www .landisvalleymuseum.org and look under “Classes/ Learning.” In celebration of Groundhog Day, Landis Valley is offering an opportunity for Landis Valley Associates members to secure eight more weeks of membership benefits for free. Anyone who purchases a new membership, renews a lapsed membership, or extends an existing membership by Monday, Feb. 5, at 8 a.m. will receive an additional two months of free membership added to the length of their membership term. This promotion applies to Groundhog Day gift memberships to friends and family as well. Four methods are available for renewing a membership. Orders can be made in person at the historical site’s front desk in the Visitor Center during regular business hours, including from Feb. 1 through Sunday, Feb. 4. Membership renewals can also be made by visiting www.landisvalleymuseum .org; by calling 717-569-0401, ext. 288, through 8 a.m. on Feb. 5; or mailed with a postmark no later than Saturday, Feb. 3. For further information, contact Phil Walz, membership coordinator, at philip .walz@landisvalleyassociates .org or the aforementioned phone number.
