ClairLeaman of New Holland is well-acquainted with area musical talent. As the coordinator of the Chester County and Lancaster County “Messiah” sing-alongs and other musical events, Leaman has worked with well-known musicians who have performed in Philadelphia and New York.
Leaman knows both members of Amoroso da Capo, a father-and-son musical team, who will share their talents at St. Stephen Reformed Church, 249 E. Main St., New Holland, in February. Titled “The Worshipful Sounds of Amoroso da Capo,” the program, which will feature a guest appearance by pianist Stuart Sacks, will be held at the church, 249 E. Main St., New Holland, on Friday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m.
Richard Amoroso Sr. is a cellist who has toured with Burt Bacharach and Lou Rawls, along with lending his performance skills to singers Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. Richard Sr. was the solo cellist with the Air Force
Band before earning a bachelor’s degree in music and a master’s in performance. He has given a number of solo recitals in the Philadelphia area and along the East Coast.
In 1989, Richard Sr. and his son Richard Amoroso Jr. played as guest performers with Peter Nero and the Philly Pops at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia. Richard Jr. began his association with the Philadelphia Orchestra at the age of 14, when he performed as soloist as the winner of the orchestra’s student concerto competition. He studied under the orchestra’s concertmasters Norman Carol and William de Pasquale. He has played at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall and performed in chamber ensembles in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Lyon, France.
The father and son have been performing as Amoroso da Capo for nearly half a century, bringing their repertoire of sacred, worship, classical, disco, and pop to a variety of venues. Leaman noted that he has been associated with Richard Sr. for more than three decades and that local concerts by Richard Sr. have
taken place at venues including Garden Spot Village and Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lancaster. “(Richard Sr.) played in the ‘Gospel According to Bach’ concert held at St. Stephen in 2022,” Leaman
recalled, adding that the event was well attended.
The purpose of the upcoming concert is for the pair to “give their testimony and speak to their relationship with God.” The father and
son will also share how God has shaped their musical relationship as well as their family relationship. A freewill offering will be accepted at the concert. Readers who have questions may call 717-354-7871.

Ben Heiser, Global Platform manager - round baler and small square baler with CNH Industrial, New Holland, knows the value of enhancing the skills of local youths. “ We are one of the largest sites globally,” he said of the area location. “Don’t we want to make sure the company has exposure … to develop the talent that grew up down the street?”
Working together with Jill Hackman, Career Pathways coordinator at Garden Spot High School (GSHS), Heiser has created a program to give
GSHS students hands-on experience with agricultural engineering during their senior year. More than five students have participated in internships since the program began in the fall of 2018. Heiser first created the internship as a working job shadow experience of about six hours per week, but it soon grew into more. “ We are evolving the experience based on intern feedback,” said Heiser, who added that he is focused on giving the students the most positive experience possible.

Evidence of those transf ormations will be presented by participants and volunteers who give testimony at the 22nd annual banquet to be held on Tuesday, March 28, at the Shady Maple Banquet Center, 129 T oddy Drive, East Earl. Inspirational speaker, recording artist, and author Laura Story will be the keynote speaker. Dahl will give an update on the ministry, and Carl Edwards, CrossNet director of development, will serve as master of ceremonies.
Dahl said that a lot of research and prayer was involved in selecting Story to speak. “I have always loved (Story’s) song ‘Blessings,’” said Dahl of the Grammy and Dove award-winning artist. “I researched how the song came from her story,” Dahl added, calling Story’s testimony “beautiful.”
Story, who has authored three inspirational books, encountered adversity early in her marriage when her husband was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The situation changed their perspective by forcing them to take steps of faith toward God’s vision for their lives. Story will perform two songs in addition to speaking.
At last year’s banquet, Dahl spoke about the organization’s capital campaign,
which was designed to raise $3 million to allow CrossNet to purchase and remodel a large warehouse on the south side of Franklin Street in New Holland. The new building will allow expansion of the ministry’s offerings to the community, which currently include a nutrition center, a youth center, and social services.
Table sponsorships and a virtual option, which includes supplies for viewers, are offered for those wishing to attend the banquet. Sponsorships and links to the livestream, which will begin at 7 p.m., may be purchased at www.elancocross.org. Readers who have questions may email office@elancocross.org or call 717-355-2454.

A Legacy Wall has been donated for the Community Butterfly Garden, which will adjoin New Holland Borough’s Groff Park arboretum on North Railroad Avenue in Earl Township. The wall, contributed by Faddis Concrete Products of Honey Brook, will be
installed in the garden in the spring. Until that time, the Legacy Wall will be stored in the open base area of New Holland Borough’s Diller Avenue water tank.

options for related classes at GSHS. Kelch spoke to a student he knew had interned at CNH. “(The student) said he learned a lot he couldn’t learn in school,” reported Kelch, who contacted Hackman to complete the necessary application and interview process for the fall 2022 semester. Kelch spent the first eight weeks in training, learning about computer programs, solid parts, sheet metal, design, and more. His first project was to solve a problem with a tool designed to take tension off a chain on a corn header. “It wouldn’t fit through the gap right, and it wasn’t user friendly,” recalled Kelch, who was able to work with a CNH employee to redesign the part and create prototypes to test.
In addition to the handson experience, Kelch has taken part in weekly virtual meetings with engineers from across the U.S., Europe, and Brazil. “He is getting to Zoom with some of the best engineers around the globe to see how engineers from different cultures communicate when they present ideas,” said Hackman, who added that Kelch is also able to apply principles from the GSHS Advanced Placement calculus and physics classes in his internship. She noted that the variety of types of engineering that students take part in gives them more confidence entering college
and helps them narrow down their interests.
“Mechanical engineering is what I love the most so far,” said Kelch, who is considering a University of Pittsburgh engineering program at the Johnstown campus following graduation.
Hackman has been coordinating internships in a variety of fields for about seven years. Heiser sees the program as a win-win. “There is a lot of industry and opportunity for students within the county to stay local and have great careers,” he said. “Without engineers, we don’t exist as a company. We need to grow and develop local talent.”

Spot Wrestlers Battle Section Two Barons
BY ARA GRIGORIAN `
On Wednesday, January 18, in a battle with Section Two rival Manheim Central, Musser recorded a pin 1:49 into the 285-pound match. Two matches earlier, Weaver was on the short end of a tough 6-5 decision with Central’s Rocco Daugherty coming out as the winner.
The Barons used seven pins, a technical fall, and a major decision to top Spot 636. Garden Spot fell to 2-4 in the L-L League.
The Spartans defeated Lancaster Catholic and York Tech on Saturday, January 14, at the Patriot Duals. Garden Spot came back from a 29-18 deficit to win the final five weight classes of its battle with the Crusaders, claiming a 48-29 win. The Spartans used four consecutive pins in one stretch as they earned a decisive victory over York Tech, 57-13.
Diego Portales, Matt Casey, Blake Weaver, and Mason Musser each had a pin in both of these matches.
In the Catholic match, Masey pinned at the 114pound weight class and Portales at 127. Following a swap of two weight classes midway through the match - a forfeit by Lancaster Catholic followed by the Crusaders earning a pin - the Spartans won five straight. Three Catholic
f orfeits aided the Spartans, who also got pins by Weaver and Musser down the stretch.
Portales, Josiah Smucker’s pin at 139, Justin Eberly notching a pin with one second remaining in the first period of the 145-pound bout and Sean Kelch pin at 152 gave Garden Spot a commanding lead versus York. Albert Vega earned a 6-2 decision at 172. Weaver’s pin at 189 and Tyler Hurst’s pin at 215 helped maintain the momentum as Musser (285) and Casey (106) wrapped things up
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
The Garden Spot boys’ basketball team improved to 5-8 on the year with a solid 48-38 victory at Solanco. The 13th of the January falling on a Friday did not confirm any old superstitions for the Spartans in this LancasterLebanon League clash.
“ We played well and defended well,” head coach Nate Musselman said. “We moved the ball really well.
“W hen we share the ball, we’re a good team,” added the coach. “We kind of controlled the whole game.”
Leading by a slim margin of 22-19 at halftime, the Spartans went on a 14-4 run in the f ourth quarter and held off the Mules’ final kick in the fourth.
Bryce Weaver finished with
a game-high 13 points.
“He played one of his best games,” Musselman said of Weaver. “He distributed the ball for us and had a lot of assists too.”
Jeff St. Jean and Gabe Smeltz scored nine and eight points, respectively. Dylan Nolt added seven.
“Dylan is the glue of our team,” said Musselman. “He is always in the right spots - the intangibles that aren’t on the stat sheet. He had 10 rebounds for us.”
Garden Spot fell to 2-4 in league play after a 51-35 loss at Conestoga Valley on Tuesday, January 17.
“The game was the opposite of how well we played last week against Solanco,” Musselman said. “Give them [Buckskins] credit. They made their shots and just beat us.”
Jace Conrad had an impressive night, leading the Spartans with 17 points, including three three-point buckets. Griffen Rishell scored 17 as well to lead Conestoga Valley.
AIR RIFLE
Garden Spot continued to dominate the L-L League air rifle competition, improving to 6-1 with a defeat of Conestoga Valley on Thursday, January 12.
The Spartans’ 494-489 defeat of the Buckskins included Jack Werner’s perfect 100 in the match. Leksi
Bender and Matt Sauder finished with 99’s while Magadalene Martin and Colton Watkins both shot 98’s.
The Spartans have been involved in several close matches this year. One of those took place on Tuesday, January 17 - a marathon match at Manheim Central.
The Barons edged the Spartans 691-690 as the seventh best shooter had to be factored in for the team result.
Bender and Sauder both shot 100’s while Martin finished with a 99. The Barons on the other hand, had six shooters finish with 99’s while Natalia Winkler and Gabby Fittery both shot 98.
On the Garden Spot side, Werner, Watkins, and Evan Brace scored 98. Trevor Jones finished at 97.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
On Friday the 13th, the Spartans came into some
good fortune, holding on to defeat Solanco 35-31 at New Holland. It was the first L-L League win of the year for the Garden Spot girls’ basketball squad.
In the low-scoring contest, the Spartans (2-13 overall, 14 league) found themselves tied with Solanco 19-19 heading into the fourth quarter. They outscored the Mules 1612 in the final stanza.
It was a true team effort for the scoring leaders. Both A.J. McClain and Nikki Zeiset finished with seven points, each connecting once from threepoint range. Meredith Horst and Gwen Varley each chipped in with six points while Morgan Pavelik scored five.
Conestoga Valley played a tough first half in Tuesday’s league game at Garden Spot. The Buckskins’ 29-17 halftime lead helped them hold off the Spartans in a 54-40
win. They only outscored Spot by two points in the second half.
Pavelik led all scorers with 13 points. Zeiset also reached double figures (11 pts) while Varley scored seven. Syanna Duval made three baskets to notch six points in the game.
BOWLING
In a tough 4-3 Section Three triumph over Lampeter-Strasburg on Wednesday afternoon at Dutch Lanes, the Garden Spot bowling team raised its record to 30-26.
Gavin Courtney was Garden Spot’s leading bowler, rolling a 269 in the second game and finishing with a 731 points total. Katie Pope knocked them down at a 643 clip for L-S.
Garden Spot was coming off a 7-0 defeat of Elco the previous Friday at Berks Lanes. Courtney rolled a 731 in this game as well, including a 259 in his third game.

LBC Names Reed Alumnus Of The Year
Lancaster Bible College | Capital Seminary & Graduate School has named Calvin Reed the 2022 Alumnus of the Year. Reed, who earned his bachelor’s degree in pastoral studies from LBC in 1978, has served in ministry for 40 years.
After graduating from LBC, Reed went on to earn a Master of Divinity and also took Doctor of Ministry courses at Biblical Theological Seminary, now Missio Seminary, in Philadelphia. Reed also previously served as chairman of the board at Biblical Theological Seminary. He is making plans for retirement after four decades at Lebanon Bible Fellowship Church (LBFC).
After completing his graduate work, Reed began serving within Bible Fellowship Church, first in Reading, then in Lebanon. Under Reed’s longtime leadership, LBFC is “committed to equipping the saints and reaching the lost
with the Gospel so that men and women can become committed disciples of Jesus Christ, in fellowship with God and one another.” As the senior pastor at LBFC, Reed works with two LBC alumni on the pastoral staff, and multiple LBC alumni and current students call LBFC their church home.
W hile at LBC, Reed served as the Student Council chaplain for a year as well as the junior class chaplain. He participated in choir and Wayfarers, a traveling singing group of about eight students. He was also part of the Pastoral Interest Fellowship for three years, led tours for prospective students through the Student Service Corps and was a student representative on the Middle States Commission on Higher Education team when the college was working toward accreditation.
Calvin and his wife, Bonnie, have three daughters and
Rural Development Grants Available
U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development will accept grant applications for the Distance Learning and Telemedicine (DLT) program to help people in rural and tribal communities access remote education and health care resources. The DLT program helps fund realtime, interactive distance learning and telemedicine services in rural and tribal areas to increase access to education, training, and health care resources that are otherwise limited or unavailable.
For instance, the DLT program gives students the opportunity to participate in classes that may be in places that are too far to access. DLT funds can also help connect rural people virtually to medical professionals without leaving their home.
USDA plans to make $64 million available in fiscal year 2023. Of this amount, $12 million is intended for projects that provide substance use disorder treatment services to people in rural areas.
Eligible applicants include state and local governmental entities, federally recognized tribes, nonprofits, and forprofit businesses. Applications must be submitted electronically through www.grants.gov by Monday, Jan. 30. For addi-
tional information, visit www.rd.usda.gov and look under Programs and Services for Telecommunications Programs and then click on Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grants.
three sons-in-law, all of whom attended or graduated from LBC | Capital. He also credits LBC Bible and theology professor Harold Kime for helping to prepare him for his time in ministry. At LBC, Reed shared, he was taught how to formulate argumentative outlines of Scripture, which he still uses in his preparation for preaching.
Over his ministry, Reed taught Sunday school and preached on both Sunday mornings and evenings on a regular basis. It is estimated that he has prepared and delivered over 5,000 messages and lessons. In addition, he has done extensive studies in the area of expository preaching.
An LBC Charger athletics fan, Reed enjoys attending LBC volleyball and basketball games to support the students in his congregation. He described himself as a lifelong learner and said he hopes to teach in retirement.
USDA is offering priority points to projects that meet certain criteria. These extra points will increase the likelihood of funding. For more information, visit www.rd .usda.gov/priority-points.
Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley recently launched the Sapphire Fund. The Sapphire Fund will financially support the wishes of children with a cancer diagnosis in the Philadelphia, Delaware, and Susquehanna Valley region.
The largest number of wishes granted each year by the chapter are for children with a cancer diagnosis. On average,
60% of the wishes granted each year will now be funded by the Sapphire Fund. Annually, $800,000 is needed to financially support these wishes. The name of the Sapphire Fund was inspired by the birthstone for the month of September, as September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Strategies For Organization
W hen the new year arrives, many people focus on changes that can be implemented in the months to come. This time of year is a popular one to make resolutions to clean and organize homes and offices.
There are plenty of things that can use a little organizational attention. There’s no ideal way to get organized. Getting organized can be as simple as taking small steps that have lasting impact.
W hatever works is a good approach, but the following are six strategies to help individuals clear the clutter.
First, utilize to-do lists. People tend to be less productive when they store all of their tasks in their brains. The first step to getting organized is to remove those plans from the head and put them down on paper or in some other tracking tool. A digital to-do list manager, for example,
enables people to see all their tasks, deadlines, and due dates in one place so they can get things done more efficiently. Consider carrying around a notepad or using the digital notes app on a phone to jot down thoughts and needs as they come up.
Second, it is a good strategy to corral one’s “smalls.” Smalls are keys, phones, chargers, wallets, headphones, and other accessories. When these items are grouped together, they are easier to find and allow one to stay on track. Invest in an attractive organizer and install it by the front door or another high-traffic area. It will cut down on trying to find those smaller items when running errands.
It is important to conquer clutter regularly. It is easy to put off cleaning and organizing when clutter has gotten out of control. Instead, by cleaning up items on a daily or weekly basis, it is much easier to keep ahead of clutter. Combatting clutter should be treated like a daily job, including sorting mail and tossing unnecessary items, emptying waste pails, dusting the desk, deleting emails, and putting items back where they belong.
gorize emails. Individuals can
utilize the folder creation option from popular email providers to sort messages. Messages that need attention can then be dropped into categories of one’s choosing, such as school, health, and receipts. Then an individual will know which folder to go into when searching for what they need, eliminating the time-consuming task of scrolling through a full inbox.
W hen bringing new items into the home, follow the procedure of giving away or throwing out one item for each new item that is received or purchased. This can help to tame clutter.
“Mise en place” is French for “put in place.” It is used in the kitchen to refer to preparing and setting out all ingredients needed in a recipe. The same concept can be used elsewhere. Clothing can be laid out on the dresser for the next day at work or school. The foyer of a home can be prepped with items one may need, like an umbrella, shoes, and paperwork. Backpacks can be organized so they are ready for the school day.
Establishment of a to-go bag at work for items that need to be brought home can also save time by keeping things organized.
Monthly Market Event Planned
The Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association (ULTWMA) will host its monthly indoor flea market/garage sale on Saturday, Feb. 4. The flea market will be held in the Veteran’s Hall of the War Memorial Building, 54 W. Main St., Leola, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
More than 37 vendors will offer items such as crafts, toys, glass and Pyrex items, paper products, books, Star Wars items,
books, antiques, team sports items, collectibles, tools, and traditional flea market bargains. Refreshments will also be available fo r purchase.
There is no admission charge. Parking is available at the rear of the building. Proceeds will support the maintenance of the War Memorial Building. For more information, contact ULTWMA at 717-656-6154 or ultwma@gmail.com.
