Recovery Minded: The Potter’s House Of Ruth BY ANN MEAD ASH

Members of the board of trustees of the New Holland Area Historical Society who accepted the donation of a rare chevron door from a local barn include (from left) Don Horning, Scott Martin, and Wilbur Horning.

Rare Chevron Door Donated To Historical Society “I am into barns,” said Lloyd Ziegler, a member of the Pennsylvania Historic Farm Structures organization. “(Members) go around documenting all these old barns because when they’re gone, they’re gone,” added Ziegler. Because of his interest in barns, Ziegler was excited to discover a chevron house door, which had been recycled as a granary entry door in the bank barn of the Zimmerman or Old Wallace Plantation along Route 322 in East Earl. Ziegler sent a photo of the door, which has been donated by the barn’s present owner to the New Holland Area Historical Society, to his friend Greg Huber, an architectural barn historian and author of “The Historic Barns of Southeastern

Pennsylvania: Architecture & Preservation, Built 1750 - 1900.” Huber, who lives in Macungie, wrote back that the chevron door is rare because these doors are only found in southeastern Pennsylvania, and they were only utilized in 18th-century buildings. Huber noted a few examples of these doors, including one at Fort Zeller in Lebanon County, one at the Keim homestead near Oley Valley, and one at the Moravian Gemeinhaus in Bethlehem. He noted that a few others are in existence as well. During a tour of the barn in late August 2020, Ziegler stated that he knew the house that accompanied the barn was built in 1766, but he was not sure that the barn was built the same year. “I have never seen (a barn) where you step up into the granary,” he said. “(Farmers) would

bring grain in here and store it up (at a higher level) to dry, and then they would bring it down here to thresh it,” added Ziegler, who noted that the barn was of unusual design. “There were basic plans, but everybody adapted,” said Ziegler, pointing out logs that were used as beams. “You don’t see that in many barns, but this barn was adapted for tobacco.” Visiting the barn brought back memories for Wilbur Horning, vice chairman of the board of trustees of the New Holland Area Historical Society. “As a younger person, I helped to put tobacco away. That was not a fun job,” said Horning. Ziegler said that the stone farmhouse that fronts Route 322 and was once part of the barn property was originally owned by the Wallace family and was at one time a center

Angie Jakubowski, women’s ministry director with The Potter’s House of Ruth Addiction Recovery and Discipleship Ministry, is comfortable talking about her background - her childhood in Wormleysburg, her degrees from Elizabethtown College, and the intervention organizations she founded - but Angie’s face lights up when she is asked about the ministry she began leading in March. “ We can house seven students, and we accepted our first student in July,” said Angie. “We are a four-phase program, and everything is Christ-centered and biblically based,” she added, noting that the first two phases are structured and focused on recovery, including biblical 12-step meetings and curriculum.

Angie holds a bachelors degree in addictions and behavioral counseling and a master’s degree in strategic leadership. She has served as a family interventionist with Restorative Interventions, which she founded in New Cumberland. She was also a mobile crisis counselor for Schuylkill County and with Lebanon Youth Advocacy, and she worked for Teen Challenge.

TPA Grant from pg 1 serve as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and be a charitable arm of the organization. The focus of the trust is to give grants to members of the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. In November of 2020, the Hearing Trust gave out nearly 25 grants to applicants totaling more than $16,000. Grant amounts ranged from $100 to $900, and recipients ranged in age from 5 to 98. Funding may be used to obtain hearing aids, upgrade cochlear implants, perform hearing aid maintenance, or provide for tutoring and other educational needs such as a laptop computer. Grants may also be utilized to cover costs related to interpreters, medical services, and service dogs, among other needs. Shoemaker noted that the organization tries to give grants to applicants who demonstrate the greatest financial need. Nearly 6,000 recipients have been awarded grants since the Hearing Trust was founded. On Nov. 19, 2020, TPA held the Sounds of St. Louis Virtual Awareness Event. The

evening featured several speakers, including Marlee Matlin, winner of the Academy Award for Best Actress for her part in the film “Children of a Lesser God.” Matlin lost her hearing at the age of 18 months, and she has dedicated her efforts to a number of humanitarian causes. “ We are trying to raise awareness of the need for assistance to those in the deaf and hard-of-hearing community,” said Shoemaker. “We are trying to raise $2 million, so we can increase the number and amount of grants we give.” Shoemaker encouraged those who want to learn more about the organization to visit www.tpahq.org/tpahearing-trust. “(Visitors to the site) can learn more about how they can help us,” said Shoemaker. “Our ultimate goal is to help as many people as we possibly can, but a lot of people don’t know where they can go for help.” Those who wish to apply for grants may fill out an application at the same website.

men’s ministry director for The Potter’s House, participated with the ministry. In late 2019, Angie was asked to prayerfully consider whether she was being called to work for the program. In early 2020, she accepted the position. Angie noted that during phase two of the program, an opportunity to earn a GED is offered and students are able to work. “In phase four, students begin to create their own community support network, and ... prepare to transition to whatever is next.” A case manager works with students to develop an individualized goal plan that covers all domains of their lives. Angie noted that the case manager and students create action steps, which are monitored throughout the process. Life skills, such as cooking and cleaning are also taught. “Our students are required to go to off-site counseling weekly,” said Angie. A weekly group therapy session is also required. “When they leave, we want them to have a strong foundation in the Lord, employment, a savings account, a Christ-centered support network, and we want them to

member of society,” Angie noted. Because no student is turned away based on inability to pay, students are expected to give back to the ministry to help cover their fees or help someone else who does not have the ability to pay. “They must give at least 10 hours on arts or crafts in whatever their giftings are,” explained Angie, displaying intricately crocheted baby items and sewing projects along with artwork. Angie said the students have come from the Lancaster County Prison and from self-referrals. The program is designed to be eight to 12 months in length, but each student’s course is individually determined. Already, she is looking toward providing another phase for graduates. “We would love to see a second location where there could be long-term supervised housing opportunities available to these ladies for when they graduate,” she said. “A place that’s safe.” Readers who would like to know more may visit https://thepottershouse lancaster.com.

Giant Giving Program To Benefit Local Schools To help address food insecurity among students, The Giant Company recently introduced a new customer giving initiative to assist local public schools in the communities it serves. This initiative, aimed at addressing the issue of childhood hunger, enables school districts to use the funds to best serve their community and can be used to support meal programs such as covering outstanding student meal debt, expanding food distribution programs and building oncampus food pantries. Now through Sunday, Feb. 28, customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores will be invited to round up their grocery purchase to the nearest dollar to donate to their local public schools’ food programs. The Giant Company will match the first $1 million donated by customers through the

Reporters are normally the ones who ask the questions in an interview, but Garden Spot Fire Rescue (GSFR) chief Darryl Keiser is happy to turn the tables, and he is not afraid of honest answers. “Do you know what the most powerful drug in the world is?” he asked during a sit-down in his office at Station 39, 339 E. Main St., New Holland. “Adrenaline,” I answered. “That’s exactly right,” said Keiser without hesitation. “We are all adrenaline junkies. That’s what gets (all the volunteers) in. We’re big boys with big toys.” Of course, it takes more than adrenaline to make someone serve the local community as a volunteer firefighter for more than 25 years. Keiser came to the borough in 1987 as a staff member at the New Holland Church of the Nazarene. At first, he and his family lived in Terre Hill. When they moved to New Holland in the early 1990s, Keiser’s neighbor Shawn Mohler asked him about volunteering with the company. Having been a member of a volunteer fire service in Cedarville, N.J., as a teenager, Keiser accepted. He was appointed as an officer in 2010, and he was elected chief in 2017.

Keiser devotes several hours a week to his position as chief, while working as a sales representative for New Holland Concrete. “There are fire calls, training at least once a week, and meetings two or three other nights,” said Keiser, who attends quarterly Lancaster County meetings for area fire chiefs in addition to GSFR meetings. “We have a bimonthly zone 3 (meeting),” he said, explaining that zone 3 is a coalition of fire departments located in the eastern part of the county. “We all work together,” said Keiser. COVID-19 restrictions interrupted the normal flow of meetings and training sessions. “COVID-19 limited us for training,” said Keiser. “We went to station trainings (to keep up to date).” Fortunately, during the shutdown, call volume dropped for both fires and accidents. “There were a lot fewer (accidents) because there was nobody on the road,” recalled Keiser. “I was scared we would have more fires with people home cooking, but they were more attentive to what was going on in the house.” Keiser explained that the GSFR’s first-due area covers about 30 square miles and that overall, the number of calls dropped from just under 500 a year to about 300 for 2020. However, a lack of training and activity is not

COP Central facilitator Noel Connell notes that the Sermon on the Mount includes the Beatitudes, the Lord’s Prayer, and a discussion of religious devotion, ambition, and relationships. “It seems rather timely to be studying about being a peacemaker, being salt and light in a dark world and also our relationships with others, said Connell. to help parents find new ways to integrate faith into everyday moments and to celebrate healthy breakthroughs in the parenting journey. The study will be facilitated by Dr. John and Debbie Tornfelt, who bring 40 years of parenting and ministry to the conversation. Recent events have caused families to experience unprecedented isolation and cultural challenges that have made many parents wary of the future. Considering the sub ject matter of the study, COP Central facilitators Deb and Keith Garner referenced verses in Deuteronomy and Proverbs that apply to raising children, noting, “ We have an obligation as parents and grandparents to teach our children the ways of the Lord. They referred to the study as one that will help equip parents and grandparents to help children navigate the cultural waters. After 11 weeks of fundraising, collecting donations and volunteering, the results for Central Penn College’s KnightQuest: Combat Hunger were recently announced. The philanthropic campaign, powered by 25 teams of students, employees, alumni and community members, raised $7,400; collected more than 3,000 donated items; and contributed over 100 volunteer hours to fight food insecurity in central Pennsylvania. The original monetary goal for Combat Hunger was $4,500, which the campaign surpassed by nearly $3,000. Each team competing in KnightQuest earned points based on funds raised,

donated items collected and volunteer hours logged. The proceeds from KnightQuest: Combat Hunger will benefit a total of 10 food banks and pantries, including Central Penn College Food Pantry, which received food items only; Lancaster County Food Hub; Lebanon County Christian Ministries; and York County Food Bank. When area resident Brandon Bixler graduated from Garden Spot High School in 2019, he knew he would be taking a gap year to serve as a state officer for Pennsylvania FFA. What he did not know is that his first semester at Penn State University in the fall of 2020 would be completed from his home in New Holland due to COVID-19 restrictions. As part of his major in agricultural and extension education with a minor in international agriculture, one of Bixler’s virtual classes focused on food security. Looking to give students a global perspective, the professor connected the class to a technical school in Ukraine. Students were also assigned to complete a project that would make an impact in the area of food security. “The direction from the instructor was that it was the student’s responsibility to come up with a way to make an impact,” said Bixler. After hearing about the assignment, Bixler thought it only made sense to contact Amy Marburger, coordinator of the CrossNet Food and Nutrition Center. Bixler has been a volunteer at CrossNet Ministries, with three locations on Franklin Street in New Holland, since he was a

child, and his mother took him in during the summer to help pack lunches. As a high school student he volunteered with the Cross Jr. afterschool program. So when Bixler reached out regarding his college project, Marburger was quick to accept. “(Marburger) was looking for help with the Buddy Bag and Power Packs Program,” said Bixler. Both programs provide area students with food over the weekend. Buddy Bags are filled with individually packaged items, and Power Packs contain the ingredients and recipe for one low-cost meal. Beginning at the end of September 2020, Bixler spent a few hours each Monday organizing the components of the Buddy Bags, which include breakfast foods, snacks, fruits, and juice. “I organize (the food) on the shelves, and later in the week other volunteers come in and put the items in the bags that are distributed on Friday afternoons,” explained Bixler. He also organizes the larger portions for Power Packs, adding boxes of cereal or snacks when they are available. During the class, Bixler sent his instructor a biweekly report on project challenges and opportunities. “Originally, I gave (the professor) an outline of the project to show that I had a place to make an

Lady Spartans Battle, Still Trying to Fill Gaps

BY ARA GRIGORIAN

Playing back-to-back games to start the week, the Spartans suffered setbacks to Berks Catholic and Manheim Central on Monday and Tuesday, January 18-19. The Spartans have battled injuries and COVID-related roster gaps in the early going, according to head coach Kevin Gensemer. “There are some kids who have been stepping up,” Gensemer said. “We are playing a lot of younger players until we are full staff and full steam.” In a Section Three girls’ basketball game at Manheim Central, the Spartans came up short. The Barons posted a 57-34 victory with the home team’s Maddie Knier pouring in 31 points. “Central has one of the top players in the league,” Gensemer said, referring to Knier. “She’s tough to

defend.” The Spartans played a stronger second half with the Barons outscoring them by only a 26-23 margin. “We played them even in the second half,” Gensemer said. “When you dig a hole by halftime, it’s hard to climb back into the game.” Garden Spot fell to 0-3 on the year (0-2 in league). Erin Gonzalez came through with 13 points to lead Garden Spot. For the junior, it was the third contest in a row leading her team in points. Morgan Pavelik finished with eight points. She is one of the younger players Gensemer has been putting into a starting role. “Morgan had a decent game with eight points,” Gensemer noted. “She’s a freshman. She had struggled, coming off a broken ankle. But she is right where I hope to see her scoring eight to 10 points a game.” One of the other upperclassmen

having a nice night was senior Avery Stauffer. “She was playing in only her third varsity game ever,” Gensemer explained. “She had 11 rebounds for us.” The Spartans were coming off a non-league loss at home to Berks Catholic. The Saints increased their 28-14 halftime lead by outscoring the Spartans 15-1 in the third quarter enroute to a 50-25 victory. Gonzalez tallied 12 in the game, hitting her target from three-point range twice. Pavelik and Syanna Duval each finished with four points. “Erin had a nice night,” added the coach. “Our other leading scorer Taylor Soehner has missed two games. She is six feet tall and is a missing a piece of our puzzle right now. BOYS’ BASKETBALL The boys’ basketball team fell just short despite a tenacious effort in Tuesday’s game against Manheim

Central. Trailing 29-16 at the midway mark of the Section Three match at New Holland, the Spartans charged back with a 14-8 run in the third quarter and went on to outscore the Barons by four points in the fourth. Central held on for a 46-43 win, improving to 3-2 (1-2 league) while Garden Spot fell to 0-4, 0-2. Jesse Martin led all scorers as he poured in 13 for the Spartans. John Dykie added 11. Jonathan Vega nailed a pair of treys on his eightpoint night. In Monday’s game at Lebanon, the Spartans demonstrated a fierce attempt to climb out of a 13-5 hole. The Cedars took that eight-point advantage into the second quarter and were only able to increase the lead to 29-19 by halftime. Garden Spot shaved another point off that lead only to see the Cedars go on a 10-3 run in the fourth and on to a 4731 victory. Jesse Martin again led Garden Spot, scoring 11 points. Cory Ream and Brendan Weaver scored six each for Spot. Lebanon’s Adrian Cruz tied Martin

for the game’s top scoring total with 11. WRESTLING The Spartans and Barons squared off in a wrestling match on Wednesday evening at Manheim Central. With a 46-24 win, the Spartans improved to 2-0. Trailing 24-16 after seven matches, the Spartans forged their comeback with a victory in the 113-pound weight class where Adam Hahn earned six team points on an injury default. Josiah Smucker followed with a gutsy effort at 120, gaining an 8-4 decision, which was followed by a Central forfeit at126. From there, the Garden Spot fortunes were in good hands as Jeremy Schilling (132) earned an 8-6 decision over Uriah Warner, making it a 10point Spot advantage. The lead increased to 40-24 on Garrett Gehr’s pin at 138. Brice Brady’s pin at 145 was the finishing touch. The Spartans had gotten on the board first in this match, which began at the 152-pound class. Aaron Martin’s 10-2 major decision gave the

Spartans a 4-0 lead. A string of three Manheim Central pins put the home team up 18-4 before Mason Musser’s pin at 215 swung the momentum toward Spot. Dustin Swanson pinned Ryland Fittery in only 30 seconds at the heavyweight bout, pulling the Spartans to within two points at 1816. BOWLING The L-L League bowling season has gotten off to a great start for Garden Spot. On Friday, January 15, the Spartans defeated Lampeter-Strasburg 7-0 at Dutch Lanes. Trevor Courtney bowled a 248 in his second game of the afternoon. That was sandwiched between a 226 score and a 210 performance. As a team, the Spartans tallied 2715 to the Pioneers’ 1916. AIR RIFLE Garden Spot’s air rifle team improved to 2-0 on the year with a 497-493 victory at home over Wilson on Thursday, January 14. Perfect scores by Leksi Bender and Tanner Donahue helped put the Spartans over the top. The team’s top two scorers had plenty of support from Amanda Wolfe, Curtis Nolt and Jack Werner, all of whom finished with 99’s on the day. The Bulldogs were led by Megan Kowalick’s score of 100. The Spartans edged Conestoga Valley 494-490 on Tuesday thanks to a perfect score by Bender and 99’s from Wolfe and Werner to lead the way. Nolt and Matthew Sauder both shot 98’s This was part of a back-to-back meeting with the Buckskins. In the earlier contest, the Spartans were on target thanks to Wolfe and Werner both shooting perfect 100’s in a 497486 win over CV. Bender, Nolt and Evan Graham came away with 99’s while Wyatt Stauffer shot a 99 for Conestoga Valley.
