students and show them that they’re proud of them.” Cuthie went to work finding out more about how the artwork programs were instituted. “I did research on communities that did something similar, but I only found two,” she noted. She was soon in contact with an art teacher in W. Hartford, Conn., who had spearheaded the program in her school district. Cuthie learned that the first year of that program, the students had drawn the artwork directly on the banner. The teacher explained that the next year, she opted to have the completed art photographed. She then used the digital files to make the banners. Funds raised by the project benefited the school where the teacher worked. “After conversing with her, I started to put together a plan for us,” said Cuthie, who noted that the Hometown Heroes banner program resources could be reused for the student art program, which she dubbed ELANCO Blocks of Art. In the fall of 2019, Cuthie began talking to ELANCO superintendent Dr. Robert Hollister and representatives of local organizations like the New Holland Borough and the ELANCO Area Library. She talked to the ELANCO school art teachers, and teachers at each of the school’s five schools submitted artwork that they felt was exemplary.

When Cuthie had the final 95 pieces, they were approved by the involved parties and photographed by Garden Spot Village employees. Weather permitting, Cuthie hopes the banners will be up in early spring. The banners will be hung by volunteers, and they will be displayed for one year. All funds raised by the program will benefit the Friends of the ELANCO Area Library. Cuthie spoke to local businesses, clubs, individuals, and others about sponsoring a piece of artwork. “We will have a sponsor reception, so the sponsors can meet the student whose banner they’re sponsoring in the spring,” said Cuthie. “It’s important for the students to have an opportunity to say thank you.” “The artwork is beautiful,” said Cuthie. She is especially excited for the students, who were surprised to learn their artwork had been chosen for display. Art was selected from the entire spectrum of the ELANCO student population. “The art teachers could look at their students’ body of work and pull out things that show accomplishment, growth, and learning,” she said. “This was a way of lifting them up.” Readers who would like more information may visit https://elancolibrary.org. against the competition. “What is exciting is seeing our show up against shows from D.C. and Chicago, because we are (in a) much smaller area in comparison, said Lantz. “It’s pretty amazing. “We are up against some longestablished (festivals) in metropolitan areas, agreed Rick. The festival raises funds for the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation. The event was held for the 41st time over Labor Day weekend 2019 at Long’s Park, located off Route 30 and Harrisburg Pike in Lancaster. In 2018, the show was named Best East Coast Art Fair. In 2019, the show received the award for the second time, and in addition was No. 4 in a ranking of Best Art Fairs in America. ArtFair Calendar.com promotes the work of artists who earn their livelihood as exhibitors at shows throughout the country. According to Rick, art festivals receive votes in the competition from exhibitors and art festival enthusiasts. The roots of the Long’s Park fair begin with Rick’s father, Richard Falkner Sr. “(My father) was on the county-wide bicentennial committee in 1976, recalled Rick, who mentioned that a July Fourth festival in Long’s Park during the U.S. bicentennial year attracted both local and national attention. “ WGAL broadcast (about the show), and it was part of the NBC national broadcast of (events) around the nation, shared Rick. Following the event, Morris Ressel, who was the Lancaster City parks director at the time, approached Rick’s father about

holding a yearly art festival for the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation as a fundraiser. The Amphitheater Foundation has been presenting free summer concerts at the amphitheater for nearly 60 years. “It was my father’s dream to (create) the best show he could, said Rick, who had not planned to be involved in the initial festival, which was held in 1979. “I was just getting out of grad school, and I was looking for a job, recalled Rick. “At the last minute, my father slipped a disc in his back and spent the first show in bed, so I was (asked) to organize the artists. “It was a humble beginning, said Rick of the first fair, which featured about 100 exhibitors. Rick and his father worked together on the show for about 15 years. “It has always been a goal to put on the best show we can and to attract the best and most talented artists as exhibitors, said Rick, who was asked to join the Long’s Park Art Festival board five years ago and

The organization is parent-run with a five-member board. “We don’t work directly with families, said Kim. “We work in the community with other groups. In the past, the group worked with Excentia to create a first responder training program, which can be used with police, fire departments, and EMTs. “We can bring the training into their facility, explained Kim. “That was one of our first big endeavors. The group also worked with The Arc of Lancaster County. “We try to work with organizations that already exist to (enhance) what they do, explained Kim. “Our goal is to increase advocacy in the

Kim’s daughter, Phoebe, who has Down syndrome, has competed in Cinderella pageants, contests that bill themselves as natural pageants featuring real children, since she was a baby. “She just loved it, said Kim, whose older daughter competes in the Cinderella pageants as well. At the age of 8, Phoebe has reached a point where it is difficult for her to compete against others her age in the interview and talent categories. began co-chairing the show two years ago. Rick noted that the juried show focuses on attracting artists who have worked to perfect their skills and who want an audience that appreciates fine art and fine craft. “(This show is for attendees) who want to find things to love and to live with, said Rick. “(The show is) juried and competitive, he added, noting that in 2019, more than 600 applicants vied for 200 spaces. “We have a group of artists who have (participated) in the show and they score each application, and we average it and take the top scoring artists, he said. “Every year the jury is different and has different tastes and opinions. According to Rick, organizers of the show work to make exhibitors comfortable at the venue. “We know it’s hard to do shows outdoors, he said. “We treat the artists well. The festival offers breakfast and dinner and booth sitters to those who take part. Artist applications for the 2020 festival are due by Sunday, March 1. Interested artists may apply at www.longspark.org.

Kim, who has experience coordinating Cinderella pageants, hopes members of the public will come to the event. “A big part of (the emphasis in staging the pageant) is that everybody has a gift to give, she said. “Come and see children and adults on stage and see them dance, smile. I want to promote the gifts of people with disabilities, she said. “There will be no winners or losers. Just come see how they shine. There is no cost to take part in the pageant, but Kim would appreciate individuals registering by Sunday, Feb. 9, through the organization’s web page at www.lancasterdsa.org. More information may also be found by searching for “Lancaster Down Syndrome Advocates on Facebook. The pageant is a fundraiser. Admission for audience members will be by donation, and food items will be available for purchase. There will also be vendor booths and other activities. Funds raised by the event will be donated to organizations and opportunities such as Challenger Little League Baseball, Challenger Football/Cheer, and a scholarship for Aaron’s Acres Summer Camp.

Spartans Fall to Solanco, Top Cocalico by Ara Grigorian

The Garden Spot girls’ basketball team hosted Solanco in a Tuesday night, January 21 Lancaster-Lebanon League match. The visitors held the Spartans to only three points in the third quarter, extending their slim two-point halftime lead to 25-17 en route to a 31-25 victory. Garden Spot was coming off a decisive victory at Lebanon the night before. In that match, the Spartans’ defense was stingy with the Cedars only coming up with six points in the first and third periods. Garden Spot’s Taylor Soehner scored a game-high 16, leading her team to 55-35 win. The split in these games improved the Spartans’ record to 5-13. The loss to Solanco dropped Garden Spot’s L-L League mark to 1-8. In fact, the

Garden Spot’s Caroline Martin hustles to try and keep the ball in play during the Spartans’ 31-25 loss to visiting Solanco last Tuesday.

Spartans earned a split in a four-game stretch, dating back to a January 14 victory over Columbia. “We’re 2-2 in our last four games,” Kevin Gensemer, the Spartans’ head coach, noted. “Despite our overall record, the team has been playing very well down the stretch.” The Spartans had two girls in double figures on Monday. Karli Stoltzfus scored 13 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. In addition to her game-high 16 points, Soehner also grabbed 10 rebounds. Olivia Usner and Erin Gonzalez each put in eight points. One thing of note regarding Usner’s scoring achievements, in that 49-39 defeat of Columbia back on January 14, she scored 35. “That is the highest point total in the entire L-L League for girls this year to this point,” Gensemer pointed out. “She had six three-pointers in that game and shot 59 percent overall.” In the Solanco game, Soehner had 10 points to top all scorers. Caroline Martin added eight points. “The Solanco game on Tuesday night was a close game throughout,” said Gensemer. “We were down 18-16 at half then came out in the third quarter to score only three points. “We battled back and had the ball with three points down and two minutes to go in the fourth,” he continued. “We had a turnover, and had to foul. We lost a tough game.” Garden Spot earned its second league victory of the year with a 3936 win at Cocalico on Thursday night. The Eagles doubled up the visitors 16-8 in the fourth quarter. However, by the final stanza, the Spartans had built a 31-20 lead. Soehner led the way with 14 points and Usner came up with 13, including nine points on treys. Stoltzfus poured

in nine key points in the close victory, which raised the Spartans’ league mark to 2-8. Hannah Custer and Kiersten Shipton each scored 12 for the Eagles. WRESTLING Garden Spot defeated Elizabethtown in dominant fashion on Wednesday, downing the Bears 59-18 on the road in an L-L League battle. The win raised the Spartans’ league record to 7-0 (9-1 overall). Two of Elizabethtown’s four wins came on close decisions, including a 3-2 overtime win by Bobby Walters, who edged Spot’s Drew Finkey at the 152-pound weight class. The other was Cole Rice getting by Ethan Eberly by a 5-2 margin at 170. In fact, it was only 29-18 at that juncture. However, an E-town forfeit at 182 and pins by Mason Musser (195) Dustin Swanson (220) and Charles Martin 25 seconds into the 285-pound bout helped the Spartans mount a 53-18 lead. The final bout was an Elizabethtown forfeit. Also posting victories for the Spartans early on were Jeremy Schilling and Mason Casey, who registered a pin at the 120- and 126-pound classes, respectively. In response to an E-town pin at 132, the Spartans’ Josh Groff came through with a fall at 138 and Gunner Gehr turned in a 17-2 technical fall at 145. On Monday night at Cocalico, the Spartans claimed a non-league victory by a nearly identical score of 57-15. The match began with Finkey’s (160) pin late in the second period. Eberly also pinned at 182. Following a forfeit, pins by Swanson and Martin at 220 and 285, respectively, gave Spot a 30-3 lead. Adam Hahn’s hard-fought 13-7 victory at 106 upped it to a 30-point lead (33-3). Following an Eagles forfeit and Schilling’s pin (120),

Casey worked a 6-3 decision to make it a 48-3 runaway. Grant Swann’s pin at 132 and Groff’s 17-1 technical at 138 gave Garden’s grapplers a 53-9 lead. Gehr’s 16-6 major at the 152-pound bout capped the scoring for the Spartans. AIR RIFLE One loss was by a close margin. The other was even closer. That was how the week went for the Spartans’ air rifle team as its record fell to 5-6 on the year. On Thursday, the team suffered a 497-490 loss at home to Manheim Township. Two days earlier, they lost one by a 493-490 margin to Manheim Central - also at home. Amanda Wolfe led Garden Spot with a score of 99 against Central. Gregory Weidman, Aaron Good and Braden Reel - shot 98’s while Lauren Wolfe finished at 97. The Barons were led by Andrew Cunrod, Brayden Groff and Hunter Shoop, each of with a 99. Township’s squad featured two marksmen with a perfect score of 100 as Jada Bender and Sam Bischiel hit the century mark. The Spartans were paced by Lauren Wolfe and Karlee Hartman, both were one point shy of perfection. Reel racked up a 98 while Amanda Wolfe and Sam Armbruster came up with 97’s. BOYS’ BASKETBALL On a Tuesday night Section Three game at Solanco, the Garden Spot boys’ basketball team held on for a 55-49 victory. The Mules poured in 17 points in the fourth quarter but came up short. The win improved the Spartans’ overall mark to 6-11 (4-5 in league). Solanco fell to 2-15 (1-9 league). Andrew Zentner lit up the scoreboard with his game-high 24 points.

The 6-foot-7 senior connected on four three-point buckets in the process. Jesse Martin scored 15 points, making a pair of treys on the night. Brendan Weaver scored eight points while on the home team’s side, Jalen Henry and Colesen Sheaffer each scored 15. Garden Spot battled back from a deficit early in the second quarter to take a 25-22 halftime lead - an advantage they increased to eight points heading into the final stanza. The night before, Lebanon’s 21point outburst in the fourth quarter spelled defeat for the Spartans at home. The Cedars pulled off a 52-48 win after trailing the Spartans 34-31 following three periods of play. Ray Pena had 24 points to lead the Cedars. He converted six of his three-point attempts.

Zentner led all scorers on the night, finishing with 25 points. Nolan Fletcher’s seven points and Weaver’s five points supported Zentner’s output. BOWLING Garden Spot improved to 53-17 on the season with back-to-back 7-0 victories this past week, defeating Elco and Lebanon Catholic. The Spartans played Elco at Dutch Lanes on Wednesday and watched Trent Delp roll a 576 in his three games combined. Trevor Courtney was the team leader against the Beavers. Courtney had an outstanding afternoon with a 275 in his second game and an aggregate score of 708. The Spartans are in second place, trailing Cocalico (61-9) in the Section Three standings.

Addie and Austin Moran, whose daughter Shiloh is a congenital heart disease survivor, will share their story at the Lancaster Heart Ball.

At its inaugural dinner and annual meeting in January, the Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) presented the 2019 Chair Award to James Stephens of Lititz, CFSP, Clark Associates Inc., Lancaster, for his volunteer service and impactful legislative affairs efforts supporting the merit shop mission. The Distinguished Service Award was presented to Cynthia M. Field of Mount Joy, former ABC Keystone vice president, who retired in September 2019, for her 38 years of service to the Keystone Chapter. The event took place at the Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square. The Chair Award was presented to Stephens by the chapter’s immediate past chair, Douglas M. Dvorchak, ARM, assistant vice president, Murray, Lancaster. Current president/CEO G. David Sload presented the award to Field. Each year, the past chair is given the opportunity to recognize individual members whose service to ABC and the

construction industry went above and beyond the call of duty. During his time on the Government Affairs Committee, Stephens has been passionate about sharing with legislators how current legislation impacts the construction industry and workforce development. The Distinguished Service Award has only been given to nine other individuals since the chapter was chartered in 1959. During her time with ABC, Field first was employed as an administrative assistant and through her dedication and continual growth within the association, she served as a director and ultimately as vice president of the association. Field was recognized as a mentor for both staff and members over the years. The Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors is a construction trade association based in Manheim, representing more than 500 constructionrelated firms. The Lancaster County Conservation District (LCCD) anticipates granting two $2,000 scholarships to Lancaster County high school seniors in 2020. Applications will be accepted from students continuing their education in the 2020-21 school year with the intent of majoring in a curriculum that focuses on natural resources and/or conservation. Examples of acceptable programs of study include environmental sciences, wildlife and/or fisheries biology, environmental resource management, or other related programs. Acceptable programs should lead to an advanced degree (two-year associate degree or four-year baccalaureate degree). The completed application must be received in the LCCD office by Tuesday, March 31.

The scholarship committee of LCCD will conduct a review of the applicants. The basis for selection will be determined on past performance and activities, current school and community involvement, future purpose and direction, and communication skills. The scholarship committee, prior to the final selection, will interview the top candidates. An announcement of the successful candidates will be made by Friday, May 15. The scholarships are made possible through an initial Ann Brown bequest, an annual fundraiser at the district banquet, and contributions from individuals. For more information and to obtain a scholarship application, readers may visit www.lancasterconservation.org or call the office at 717-874-2559.

Police Receive 39 Car Seats The Center for Traffic Safety, Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, Safe Kids Lancaster County, and the Manheim Township Police Department will distribute car seats to Lancaster County police departments. Funded by Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, 39 car seats will be provided to 21 municipal police departments by the end of January. Law enforcement agencies often have child passengers during calls, and they need to have resources available to safely transport children. Every child must be properly restrained when riding in a motor vehicle. In order to uphold this Pennsylvania law, police officers need to have the means to transport children safely before leaving a scene. According to Safe Kids, a correctly installed child restraint can greatly reduce the risk of injury or death in an automobile accident. Safe Kids Lancaster County offers car seat checks at locations through Lancaster County. To learn more, readers may contact Natalie Oster, Lancaster County coalition coordinator, at 717544-3807 or natalie.oster@ pennmedicine.upenn.edu.

The Arts at Millersville will welcome Yamato: The Drummers of Japan and its show “Jhonetsu - Passion!” to the Winter Visual & Performing Arts Center on Thursday, Feb. 6, at 7:30 p.m. The Winter Center is located at 60 W. Cottage Ave., Millersville, on the Millersville University campus. Yamato is composed of dozens of performers who travel around the world with approximately 40 of Japan’s traditional Taiko drums. The group is in its 26th season, celebrating more than 4,000 performances in 54 countries and reaching nearly 8 million people. Yamato is based in Nara Prefecture’s Asuka Village, said to be the birthplace of Japanese culture, where the musicians engage in daily strength training, instrument practice, and program rehearsal. The troupe starts each performance by hitting a drum that weighs half a ton and was made from a single piece of wood from a 400-year-old tree. The performers move their whole bodies to strike the instrument with the belief that the drumbeat, like the heartbeat, is the very pulse of life and the epitome of the Japanese spirit. The title of the program “Jhonetsu - Passion!” relates

to the excitement of the audience during performances, noted founder and artistic director Masa Ogawa. Since its formation, Yamato has been committed to preserving and respecting the Taiko tradition, while infusing originality and innovation into the ancient practice. Notably, Yamato broke from Taiko’s longstanding patriarchy and has always included women in the troupe. Additionally, while the members train rigorously, Yamato seeks to imbue each performance with joy and a sense of fun, breaking from the stereotypical stoicism associated with this ancient art form. Separate ticket fees have been set for adults, for students, and for Millersville University students. To purchase tickets, readers may call the box office at 717-871-7600, visit www.ArtsMU.com or visit the box office at The Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, or the box office at the Student Memorial Center, Room 103, on the Millersville University campus. A discount is available for groups of 10 or more, and groups should call the box office at the aforementioned number to reserve their tickets.
