“We have given out $350,000,” said John Mullineaux of the Lancaster Bicycle Club (LBC). “The single biggest (amount) was for municipal and EMS (emergency medical services) bike patrols. We’ve purchased bicycles and equipment (for those organizations).” Mullineaux added that Lancaster police and police stations in a number of county boroughs have received funds from the club to purchase bikes. LBC is currently seeking applicants so that the club can give away another $25,000 in grants. Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and schools. The application form may be found at https://lancaster bikeclub.net/grant-program. Completed applications are due to the club by Friday, Feb. 15.

“It is a simple application process,” said Mullineaux. “We ask for a short description of what they will do (with the funds) and how much they want.” Mullineaux said that the application form also asks what the organization will do if it does not receive the grant. “I pull all the applications together and do a presentation for the board, and they (usually) vote up or down,” said Mullineaux, who added that sometimes the amount of the grant request is modified by the group. Those receiving grants must initiate their projects during the 2019 calendar year. The grants were first given in 1990. Over the years, the types of requests that have been granted have varied. “ We have spent money on bicycle advocacy,” recalled Mullineaux. “We have spent more than $30,000 on bicycle racks.” Mullineaux said many bicycle See Bike Grants pg 9

Bicyclists take part in the Covered Bridge Ride organized each August by the Lancaster Bicycle Club. The ride raises funds that the club uses to give out grants to area organizations for bicycles, bike racks, signage, and more. Applications for this year’s grant program are due by Feb. 15.

Sully, the newest UDS Foundation service dog trainee, was named in honor of the yellow Labrador that served President George H. W. Bush. Sully is in need of a sponsor to fund the completion of his twoyear training before going to work helping to provide independence to a person with a disability.

When UDS Foundation moved from its previous home in Greenfield to 2270 Erin Court, Lancaster, the space available for the service dog program more than doubled. The new facility includes a kennel with space for 12 dogs, a cuddle room for puppies, and a large training room. According to Lori Breece, UDS service dog program manager, 12 puppies per year are brought into the program, which takes several years to turn an eight-week-old ball of fluff into a dog capable of giving a person with a disability a chance for greater independence. In addition to serving individuals, many UDS dogs are being sent to schools where they provide student support. “Since we

Servant Stage’s artistic director, Wally Calderon. “Audiences will love the amazing vocal blend of the trio, as well as the individuality of each singer,” said Prickett. “Finding voices that blend so tightly is not an easy task. The best part is that the three of us are actually friends; we all care very much about each other, and I think this will translate to the audience clearly and add another layer to the show.” The show will tour to venues across Lancaster County with 30 performances through March. There will also be three featured weekends of performances. The first of these weekend performances will take place at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim, on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 15 and 16. The Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Servant Stage will kick off the new year with concert titled “A Million Dreams: Songs of Inspiration.” The original revue will showcase vocals, tight harmonies, and original arrangements of a wide variety of uplifting songs, ranging from Broadway and pop tunes to sacred songs and spirituals. “It’s a diverse program, but each song has an encouraging or inspirational theme,” said Servant Stage executive director Johnathan Bauer. “This is a great show to beat the winter blues. The arrangements, vocals, and harmonies are just exquisite, and the costumes are gorgeous.” The cast includes Lancaster performers Ric Zimmerman, Sarah Poague, and Kat Prickett as featured vocalists, with Kayla Klase as female vocalist swing. Zimmerman directed the vocals, with original arrangements and musical direction from Andy Roberts. Roberts and Scott Williams take turns as accompanist for the show, which is directed by

AHA Sets National Wear Red Day will use that analogy) to give parents a vision of what they need to do for a (child) to take off before leaving the nest,” explained Fisher. “Our goal is to send them off where they are able to fly on their own, (including) what we might want to do to prepare them for the day that they flap their wings and soar.” Lauren Smoker, communication coordinator for Keystone, added that Reed’s illustration depicts the parents as watching from the tower. “(The parents) can see the bigger picture in directing (their children) for takeoff,” Smoker explained. The evening conference will include light refreshments, table talk and discussion time, and a question-and-answer period. There will also be a special activity for all children up to and through fourth grade. There is no cost to hear Reed speak, but those who plan to attend the 6 p.m. workshop are asked to register at www.keystonechurch.org/family or by calling 717-768-7213. Pictured on front:

According to Brandon Fisher, lead pastor of Keystone Church in Paradise, parenting is not always easy, and church members would like to offer local parents a little help. “This is a way for us to come alongside parents and (offer them) resources (for) what we think is a really difficult job: to raise kids in 2019,” said Fisher. “It’s a different climate (than in the past).” With that goal in mind, Keystone will hold “Family Flight Plan” featuring guest speaker Jeff Reed on Sunday, Feb. 10. Reed will speak at both morning services, which will be held at 9 and 10:35 a.m., at the Keystone Church Worship Center, 20 Harristown Road, Paradise, and he will hold a special conference session from 6 to 8 p.m. that evening. “We want to be an encouragement to parents and to acknowledge that their job with their (children can be) hard,” said Fisher. “We want to let them know they’re not alone in the challenges they’re facing and that we

have resources … to both encourage and inspire them with tools and training to direct their kids to know and love Jesus.” Fisher noted that parents of children from elementary age through high school could benefit from the workshop as could grandparents. In fact, even though the title is “Family Flight Plan,” Fisher said that anyone in leadership may gain helpful information from Reed’s teaching. Reed is a Lifeway representative who has developed a relationship with Keystone. He has served in full-time ministry for more than 20 years. His past titles have included student pastor, worship pastor, children’s pastor, executive pastor, senior pastor, and family pastor. “(Reed) has a rich background in helping to equip parents to raise up children in biblical ways,” said Fisher, who noted that Reed has shared his abilities in training with Keystone at a past parenting conference. According to Fisher, the “Family Flight Plan” title relates to the illustration Reed will use in teaching the workshop. “(Reed

Both sessions will be presented by William Woys Weaver, an internationally known food historian, who makes his home in Devon. He is the author of a number of cookbooks, including the award-winning “Pennsylvania Dutch Country Cooking.” According to Dirks, Weaver has donated seeds to the Landis Valley heirloom seed program. She shared that Weaver became interested in seeds when he discovered that his grandfather, an avid gardener, had been working to preserve seeds from traditional plants. “(Weaver) committed to growing (the seeds) and keeping them growing,” said Dirks, who added that heirloom seeds must be grown to keep the species alive. “ When you talk about seed preservation, it means growing them in the garden on a rotating basis,” she explained. The morning session of the upcoming workshop will be divided into three parts. Part one will explore the impact of Native American seeds. “It’s amazing

how many have origins in South and Central America,” said Dirks. “(The seeds) migrated north with the Native American peoples.” The workshop will include time for round table discussion and a presentation on Three Sisters gardening, which focuses on growing corn, beans, and squash. Dirks said that the practice originated in South America. “(Three Sisters gardening) is a Native American term and a practice the early settlers would have learned from their Native American neighbors, and it still works,” she explained. During the afternoon workshop, Weaver will delve into the Pennsylvania Dutch kitchen garden and the foods that this type of garden brought to the tables of different regions of Pennsylvania. The four-part session will begin with the seeds the immigrants brought with them. “Some of those seeds had also come from South America,” said Dirks, explaining that Spanish and Italian explorers brought seeds back

to their homelands and that those seeds moved north through Europe and then returned to America with Pennsylvania settlers. Another segment of the afternoon presentation will focus on the foods that are traditional among Pennsylvania Dutch families. “(The kitchen garden) was the woman’s garden close to the kitchen,” said Dirks, who noted that four-square gardens usually contained carrots, bush beans, and pole beans, with a border of medicinal herbs, along with cooking herbs. Potatoes, cabbages, and onions that were used in bulk were grown in large fields. According to Dirks, Weaver will also spend time discussing the distinctions between types of Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine. “In the third part (of the afternoon session, Weaver) will talk about Pennsylvania Dutch cooking and how it’s not all the same,” said Dirks. “There are (foods) our grandparents and great grandparents cooked, that we don’t cook so much,” she added, noting that schnitz un knepp, a dish made with ham, apples, and dumplings, is not cooked as often as it once was. There is a cost to attend each workshop. Readers who would like more information or would like to register may visit www.landisvalleymuseum.org and click on Education & Workshops or call 717-569-0401.

CASA of Lancaster County trains community volunteers to be qualified, compassionate advocates for abused and neglected children within the court system. Advocates fight for and protect a child’s right to be safe, to be treated with dignity and respect, and to learn and grow in the security of a loving family. CASAs are asked to meet with the child regularly and are authorized to interview people in the child’s life, such as social workers, attorneys, and teachers. They attend court hearings with the child and report their findings to See CASApg 7

have been here (in the new location), we have added several clients in less than a year, including three or four schools,” said Breece. “We are so pleased with the pups-in-theclassroom opportunity. Our vision would be a dog in every school or at least every district.” In schools, dogs serve students with multiple disabilities, but they also serve in learning support classrooms. Kristy Smith, service dog program coordinator with UDS, said that dogs help with physical therapy or with fine motor skill issues, but they also aid students struggling with “the emotional aspects of school and life’s challenges.” Breece added that in some classrooms, time with a dog can be an incentive. “For some of those students who are more challenged, it’s a calming influence, and they can work toward time with the dog as a reward,” she said. Smith noted that currently UDS dogs are present in Cocalico, Ephrata, Penn Manor, and Northern York County school districts. “Each dog has a teacher or principal they go home with each night as the main handler, but we ask the schools to have a group of handlers,” she explained. Having a group of handlers allows a dog to work in multiple rooms. Breece noted that having a dog in a school affects the atmosphere of the building. “It changes the lives of the faculty by changing the environment behind the cement walls,” she said. “We’d like to see more dogs in schools.” A service dog’s training begins when it becomes part of the BARKS Prison Program, through which it is trained by an inmate

at a Pennsylvania correctional facility. Puppies live with their inmate handlers around the clock, learning up to 50 commands. At the age of one year, the dogs return to Lancaster. For the next six months, they live in a volunteer puppy home. “(The dogs) attend weekly outings and training sessions, and they will go out in the community so they can get socialization,” explained Breece. At the age of 18 months, the dogs are sent to trainers for six months of specialty training. Smith explained that many of the tasks the dogs perform are extensions of actions that come naturally to Labradors, such as retrieving and tugging, which make up 95 percent of the working service dog force. “A lot of the main job is retrieval from the floor or the counter or helping pay,” she said, adding that dogs tug open doors, carry bags that are too heavy (for their client), and remove articles of clothing, such as socks. “They push elevator buttons and handicapped-acces-

racks seen in Lancaster city and around the county were provided by the club. The club has also purchased road signs and bicycles for elementary school gym classes that were used to teach bicycle safety. Mullineaux said that one of the most unusual awards was to the mural project at the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail near Columbia. A part of the 250-foot-long mural will show a bicycle rider on the trail. In addition to the $25,000 grants, LBC also donates $5,000 to the county to help defray costs of maintaining covered bridges and $5,000 to HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, for student scholarships. The scholarship program grew out of the 450-member club’s annual Covered Bridge Ride. The ride, which dates back 40 years, was originally just for club members. “We expanded (the ride) to include visitors because of the great place Lancaster County is,” said Mullineaux. Originally, the intention of the ride was to raise funds to augment the club’s budget, but in the 1990s, Bicycling magazine listed the ride as the best in Pennsylvania. “Attendance exploded,” said Mullineaux. “One year, we hit 4,000 (riders).” The ride is now restricted to 2,300 participants. It begins at the HACC Lancaster campus, 1641 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster. Several routes will be offered. The 62-mile metric century route will head north to New Holland, Farmersville, Terre Hill, and Reamstown, before turning south to return to HACC. Seven covered bridges will be part of the route. Additional routes include a 31-mile course with four covered bridges and a 15-mile ride with two covered bridges. One option adds a loop at Stevens that travels 32 difficult miles for riders who wish to complete a more challenging ride.

Fisher Joins 1,000 Point Club, Spartans Top Cedars by Ara Grigorian

The shooting was on the mark the Spartans’ sixth victory of the season on Monday and wrapped up with Monday night as Garden Spot The Garden Spot girls’ basketball a close loss to Lancaster-Lebanon improved to 6-11 with a 71-48 team had a busy week, which included League rival Cocalico at home. defeat of Lebanon in a non-league match. Garden Spot outscored the Cedars 35-16 in the first half and in a highscoring third quarter, managed to top Lebanon 24-20 to extend the lead. Megan Fisher joined the 1,000 point club with a game-high 38 points. She connected on four three pointers and was 8-for-9 at the foul line. Karli Stoltzfus also reached double digits, scoring 12 points. The next night, over Lebanon last Monday. the Spartans were on the road, playing the top team in Section Three. In that contest, Solanco came out on top 56-22, holding Garden Spot to single digit scoring in each quarter. Solanco improved to 8-2 in the league while Garden Spot fell to 1-8 as Jess Cabrera led the Golden Mares with 20 points. Erin Gonzalez scored seven points to lead the Spartans, hitting the team’s lone three-pointer. Stoltzfus finished with five points. However, the Eagles (10-7, 5-5 league) eked out a win 43-34. Paige Kemper stepped up and scored 13 for the Spartans, making all four of her free throws on the night. Fisher (10 pts) and Kemper each nailed one three-point jump shot. Hanah Greenly’s 19 points paced Cocalico. BOYS’ BASKETBALL The Garden Spot boys’ team had a pair of big victories on consecutive nights, defeating Lebanon on the road Monday night to improve to 9-7, and posting a 68-50 victory over Section Three foe Solanco on Tuesday. The win over Solanco raised the Spartans’ league mark to 6-3 as the team moved into 12th place for the District Three 5A power rankings. The Spartans’ strong effort at Lebanon put the team up 54-44 heading into the final period. However, a fierce fourth quarter almost nullified that lead. Garden Spot hung on for a 61-56 win. The game’s leading scorer was Spartan senior Keontae Nunn. He scored 34 on Monday, including four treys, Andrew Zentner and John Dykie scored nine and eight points, respectively, with Zentner scoring a pair of three-point baskets. Jean Carlos Gonzalez poured in 23 for the Cedars, who fell to 7-10 overall. Jon Morales had been the Spartans’ leading scorer the previous Friday in a 66-47 loss to section rival Lampeter-Strasburg. In that game he put up 15 points and prompted L-S head coach Ed Berry man to remark, “We tried to keep Nunn out of the paint and were successful with that. Morales, for not being a big kid, played us tough inside.” The 15 by Morales and 13 by Jesse Martin, who made three treys, went along with 10 points by Zentner in that loss. Morales topped Spot in scoring against Solanco, pouring in 23 points mostly from inside the paint. Zentner complemented that with his 13 points while Matt Sharp tacked on nine. Nunn scored seven points. Dawson Kreider led the Mules with 17 points. Garden Spot’s offense got on track

early on, lighting up the scoreboard for 22 points. The offense was infectious as the visitors scored 18 before the Spartans slowed them down in the next three quarters. With a 36-26 halftime lead, the Spartans regained momentum in the third quarter. WRESTLING The Garden Spot grapplers posted a decisive 57-24 victory over Section Two rival Elizabethtown on Wednesday, improving to 5-2 in the league.

With seven pins plus a 4-1 decision in favor of Jeremy Schilling, who won the 106-pound match, the Spartans pulled ahead to a 45-0 lead before the Bears (1-6) even put up any points. With 42 seconds gone in the second period of the 195-pound battle, Jacob Warner registered a pin. The 220 bout was an E-town forfeit, but Charles Martin earned another pin for the Spartans, needing only 30 seconds to do so at the heavyweight match. Following Schilling’s decision, Mason

Another forfeit pushed the Spartans’ lead to 39-0 before Josh Groff (132) came on to pin Uriah Giner in 40 seconds. That made it 45-0. Alan Perez helped the Spartans regain momentum at 145, notching a second-period pin. Drew Finkey’s pin at 152 was the last of the scoring for the Spartans, who had a commanding

Children will spend time outdoors and must be dressed appropriately.

Creative Works of Lancaster has slated a theatrical escape room experience, “8 Months on the Ice,” during which attendees will be cast as members of a rescue party sent to Antarctica to find out what became of an ill-fated fictional expedition. “8 Months on the Ice,” by Chris Silansky, will run on select dates from Friday, Feb. 1, through Sunday, Feb. 10, with performances taking place at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and at 6:30 p.m. on Sundays. Audiences will need to check in for performances at the box office, which will be located at the Conestoga Restaurant, 1501 E. King St., Lancaster. The box office will open two hours prior to each performance, and check-in at least 15 minutes before start time is recommended, as participants will receive further instruction at that time. Late arrivals will be admitted at the discretion of the box office staff. Audiences will be limited to 18 people per performance, so advance ticket purchase is recommended. Tickets can be purchased at https://CWLanc 8Months.eventbrite.com. Group rates and full-show buyouts are available.
