Lancaster’s own boxing legend Presentation to focus on “The Lancaster Thunderbolt” BY ANN MEAD ASH
C
o r y Va n B r o o k h o v e n , president of the Lititz Historical Foundation, is known for his writings, including his book on Warwick Township. In 2006, Van Brookhoven was signing copies of his book at an event in Manheim when he met Joe Hauck. Joe’s father, Leo Houck, had been a boxer, known as “The Lancaster Thunderbolt,” who grew up in the Cabbage Hill area. During Leo’s career, which lasted from 1904 to 1926, he was never knocked out. Van Brookhoven and Joe struck up a friendship. “Both having an interest in local history …we would get together for coffee or lunch and talk about Leo,” recalled Van Brookhoven. “These meetings were a gateway for me in learning just how important Leo was in sports history.” Van Brookhoven will share his knowledge of the fighter when
he presents “ T he L ancaster Thunderbolt - The Story of Leo Houck Champion Boxer” at the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS) meeting on Thursday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m. in the chapel at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. Van Brookhoven’s friendship with Joe led him to begin collecting news articles, photographs, and memorabilia related to Leo’s life. “Joe and I spent many hours at LancasterHistory’s archives,” reported Van Brookhoven, noting that the pair looked at countless photos and articles collected by Leo’s brother and boxing historian Johnny. “In 2018, Joe and I met a man named Randy Swope who wanted to write a book on Leo,” Van Brookhoven stated. “We met with Randy on many occasions and provided him with our resources.” When Swope published his book in 2019, Van Brookhoven was surprised to be given an acknowledgement. Tapping into our roots Nate Deen to speak at CrossNet banquet BY ANN MEAD ASH
“We want to push the virtual option,” said Carl Edwards, CrossNet Ministries director of development, of the annual banquet scheduled for Tuesday, March 26, at Shady Maple Banquet Center, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. The live event is sold out with nearly 900 guests to be seated at the event, but Edwards encourages those who are interested in hearing Nate Deen and updates on the work of the ministry to host a watch party at their home,
business, or church. “Support a local restaurant by ordering dinner in that night,” stated Edwards, who noted that a guest packet will be provided. “Those who are watching virtually will have all the materials and favors those at the tables (at Shady) have,” he explained. Nate, who was taken in by wellknown Garden Spot High School teacher and drama club founder Stan Deen as a teenager, will share the story that inspired the film “Brave the Dark.” Born Nate Busko, the New Holland native

As Pine Grove Church prepares for its seventh clothing giveaway, Jaiden Brandt, associate pastor of ministries, reflected on the origins of the event. “This started with two mothers who attend church here,” he recalled, adding that one was a mother of four and the other a mother of six. “They had a lot of clothing to pass on for reuse, and they opened the great room up and brought clothing for people to exchange.” “It grew and grew,” said Brandt of the event, now called the Pine Grove Clothing Closet, which Pine Grove Church will hold its seventh clothing giveaway for the

was orphaned at an early age, and he was living out of his car when he and Stan first met. For more than 30 years, Nate has been involved in photography, theater, and film, and he is the founder of the Stan Deen Foundation, which seeks to help traumatized adolescents find hope. Edwards said the choice to have Nate speak grew out of CrossNet staff members considering the entire community when reflecting on this year’s speaker. “One of our staff members sent Meredith (Dahl, CrossNet executive director) and I the ‘Brave the Dark ’ trailer, and it clicked (that) it’s the perfect time to highlight a local story,” he said. “I think it will be powerful.” “We are tapping into our roots. It’s really exciting how it all ties together,”

added Meghan Er vine, director of marketing and communications for CrossNet, who pointed out that this year’s theme, “Staying the Course,” harkens back to CrossNet’s beginnings in the 1980s as a youth center called Cross Connection. As in the past, Edwards will serve as master of ceremonies. “My portion is sharing who we are, what we do, ministry stories, and highlights,” said Edwards, who stated that Dahl will give an update on the ministry, which will include information on the purchase and remodel of a large warehouse on the south side of Franklin Street in New Holland. is scheduled to be held at the church, 1194 Reading Road, Bowmansville, on Friday, Feb. 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 24, from 9 a.m. to noon. Brandt reported that the church great room, plus two other rooms, will be filled with donated clothing. “(It’s not necessary) to donate,” explained Brandt, who noted that the event used to be called a “clothing exchange.” “People were confused,” stated Brandt. “That’s why we changed it to Clothing Closet last year.” During the weeks leading up to the giveaway, organizers ask for clothing for people of all ages to be dropped at the church. Specifically, clothing items that are clean, smokefree, and sorted by size and gender are requested. Brandt noted that coats, shoes, boots, hats, scarves, and mittens are usually among the items available at the giveaway. “We have also had toys and books for kids (in the past),” he stated, adding that car seats, cribs, and other baby furniture items are not part of the giveaway. Brandt pointed out that teen and adult clothing became part of the giveaway in 2023 and that the hours were expanded to include Friday evening at that time. “We had a lot of parents and teens on Friday night last year,” he said. Brandt estimated that since the program started, organizers have “given thousands of pieces of clothing to hundreds of families to show the love of God in a tangible way.” The event also seeks to introduce area residents to Pine Grove. “Last year, there was a huge need, and I think this year, it will be even greater,” shared Brandt, who said that last year 160 families came through church doors to the giveaway. Nearly 100 of those were attending the event for the first time. “ T hat represented 363 children and 289 adults,” said Brandt. “That’s the impact.” Any items left after the giveaway will be donated to local thrift shops and to Unto in Mount Joy. More information may be found by searching for “Pine Grove Church Clothing Closet” on Facebook or by calling 717-445-5136.

NHAHS from pg 1 of local history and many presentations in L ancaster County over the last decade, Van Brookhoven first had the chance to talk about Leo’s boxing career for an East Petersburg Historical Society meeting on Oct. 2, 2023. Va n B r o o k h o v e n ’ s multimedia presentation includes many photos of Leo’s days in the ring thanks in part to Johnny’s extensive collection. “(Leo) was a professional boxer for the first half of his life,” said Van Brookhoven, who added that Leo’s attachment to boxing did not end with his retirement. “He had a very successful career as a boxing coach at Penn State for 27 years,” said Van Brookhoven, who noted that Leo was married and fathered six children and that, after retiring from Penn State, he returned to Lancaster to live until his death in 1950. In his research, Van Brookhoven has collected a number of interesting facts about Leo. “He was very active
in his community. He also played several other sports during his offseasons from boxing,” said Van Brookhoven, who recounted that the original spelling of the family name is “Hauck.” “It’s a funny story,” explained Van Brookhoven. “One time a boxing promoter spelled Leo’s last name as ‘Houck’ accidentally, and he liked it, so he kept that as his last name in the ring.” Van Brookhoven also pointed out that Leo fought in every weight division, which he stated is “unheard of in today’s game of boxing.” According to Van Brookhoven, Leo sparred with Jack Dempsey twice, also facing a few International Boxing Hall of Fame members, including Frank Klaus, Jeff Smith, Gene Tunney, and Harry Greb. The program is free and open to the public. More information about NHAHS may be found at https://nhhistorical.com or by searching for “New Holland Area Historical Society” on Facebook.

The Eicher Arts Center volunteers worked with Ephrata Borough to transform the historic structure into a venue for public entertainment and cultural events as well as private gatherings.

Tree Climbing School slated
Penn State Extension will host a Tree Climbing School from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. from Monday to Thursday, June 10 to 13, at Long’s Park, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. Geared for arborists, property managers and foresters, the workshop will teach the basic knowledge and skills required for safe tree climbing and maintenance. Students will not become accomplished climbers; the school will focus on fundamentals and safety. The school will include classroom and fieldwork focused on safety and safe climbing practices, equipment and use of hand tools, tree terminology, tree disease and insect diagnosis, culture and pruning, tree removal and knots. A great deal of time will be spent in trees climbing. All participants should be in good health and have a desire to work in arboriculture. On the first day, all participants will be asked to sign a waiver. Those who have disabilities that prevent a full range of body motion, who experience difficulty with manual dexterity, or who have significantly impaired vision should not register for this program. The workshop will take place rain or shine, and participants should dress for the weather. Climbing equipment will be provided; attendees may bring their own gear, but it will be inspected before use. Attendees should bring their own lunch and beverages each day. Space is limited, and preregistration is required at http://tinyurl.com/Tree -Climbing-School-June24.
