Transitions: Petra Under New Leadership BY ANN MEAD ASH

On Jan. 3, Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland, held a special service during which a new senior pastor took on the mantle of leadership. After nearly 40 years helming the church, senior pastors Lester and Erma Zimmerman retired, and Brian

Coles became the new lead pastor. Brian and his wife, Tracy, first joined the Petra ministerial staff as student ministries pastors in 2016. Tracy now serves as Petra’s local outreach pastor, and Lester will move into an expanded role providing leadership and oversight to the Hopewell Network of Churches to which Petra belongs. Garden Spot Village wood shop member Jim Rittenhouse (left) and associate director of development Allison Cuthie display items that will be sold in the upcoming annual Birdhouse Auction.

GSV Announces Expanded Birdhouse Auction For 2021 olding an auction in a retirement community is no easy feat under COVID-19 restrictions, but rather than being limited by the situation, Garden Spot Village (GSV) chose to safely expand the annual Birdhouse Auction that supports the community’s benevolent fund through the sale of one-of-a-kind items handcrafted by GSV residents. This year, the auction will be structured using two separate platforms - the traditional indoor silent auction and an online auction. According to Allison Cuthie, associate director of development with GSV, about 50 items will be offered on each platform. The silent auction

H

will be held in the Village Square Indoor Park, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. The indoor auction opened Jan. 29, and it will end on Friday, Feb. 26, at 5 p.m. Those wishing to visit this auction will need to undergo a COVID-19 screening at the front door. Hours will be 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The online auction can be accessed at www.gardenspotvillage.org. Items went up for bids on Feb. 1, and the auction will end on Feb. 26 at 5 p.m. Cuthie noted that the seasonal event gives all those involved a glimpse of the warmer months. “During the winter, there’s a blah feeling, and this is something to

help us look forward to spring and birds and flowers, she pointed out, adding that the items in the auction, known for being bright and whimsical, offer special variety this year. “With people staying inside (due to) COVID, it really brought out a lot of creativity, she shared, recalling that the event that started with the wood shop now involves quilters, crafters, cross stitchers, and the art guild. According to Cuthie, this year’s creations will not only be plentiful, but they will also exhibit originality. Birdhouses will range from traditional log cabins to those made of unusual materials, such as wine corks, along with those that are designed to be functional for certain types of birds. One creation

Some of the most important features of the annual Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church lasagna dinner fundraiser will be the same this year. Organizers will still prepare up to 100 pans of lasagna in three varieties - hamburger, hamburger and sausage, and vegetable with a red sauce - on the day of the sale. Meals will each include a square of lasagna, a salad, garlic bread, and a homemade dessert. Individual pans of each variety of lasagna will also be sold at a special price. Changes will include the method of delivery for the food and the date the event will be held. “It has always been the last Saturday in February, but this year, we have changed the date to the third Saturday in February, said Margaret Sensenig, who organizes the event along with Betty Snyder and Deb Burns. This year’s dinner will be a drive-through event held at the church, 2555 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, Feb. 20, from 3 to 6 p.m. Those wishing to purchase meals or pans of lasagna are asked to take Horseshoe Road to Industrial Circle and enter the church driveway from the right side of Industrial Circle. Cars will then pull into the parking lot, where orders will be taken and cash payment will be accepted. Meals will be delivered to each car

would need each week to run the session by themselves with their student,” she explained. “I have created a handbook, and I have written out each lesson with an opening ice breaker or activity and the content the mentor is to go over. I have provided the questions to ask, and I also encouraged them to do reflection time at the end of the session.” Looking ahead, Pankratz would like to see volunteers step up to help with the program. “I want the community to know this is an option for service if they are interested in getting to know an elementary student,” she said. Pankratz is prepared for whatever the next semester may bring. “(In the fall), we will continue with the (program) we’re doing now, where the mentor and student meet at approved locations, or if we can go back to meeting at the schools, we would love to do that,” she stated. Individuals wishing to volunteer may contact Pankratz by emailing charis@elancocross.org or calling 717-355-2454.

W hen Charis Pankratz, mentoring and education director with CrossNet Ministries, finished revamping the Cross Jr. program, changing it from a group activity program into an intentional one-on-one mentoring meetup, for the fall 2019 semester, she was excited to move forward. Fortunately, the advent of COVID-19 restrictions did not dampen her enthusiasm. “ We did complete that year of programming,” said Pankratz, who wrapped up the program in a virtual

remodeling the program to fit COVID-19 ESD policy restrictions. The result is a pilot program for five students in fourth and fifth grades and their mentors that started the week of Feb. 1 and will be held through the week of Monday, April 19. Mentors and students will meet at two locations. Those who live outside New Holland and wish to meet on Tuesdays after school may utilize the lobby of Pine Grove Church in Bowmansville. Mentors and mentees in the New Holland area may meet at the CrossNet Youth Center on Thursday afternoons. CrossNet protocol for masks and social distancing will be followed. “Our goal is to provide a safe space for underresourced (students) in ESD to connect with a positive adult and, through that relationship and the Cross Jr. (curriculum), be able to increase their self-confidence, their growth mindset, their self-efficacy, (so they) benefit from this relationship,” shared Pankratz, who adjusted the program to meet that goal safely. “I essentially put into a box all the materials a mentor

format in the spring of 2020. “ We had eight students at each elementary school, so a total of 16 kids completed (Cross Jr.), and we had some closure.” When Pankratz learned that outside volunteers would not be allowed on ELANCO School District (ESD) premises in the fall of 2020, she knew that change would affect Cross Jr. “The whole essence (of Cross Jr.) was that the mentors meet with students and me at the school, which had eliminated the transportation barriers,” noted Pankratz, who spent the fall semester

Coming off a tight 54-53 victory at Cocalico on Thursday, January 28, the Garden Spot boys’ basketball team went on the road to face another Lancaster-Lebanon League team on Wednesday, February 3, visiting Manheim Central. The Spartans got off to a fast start, outscoring the Barons 19-10 in the first quarter. They carried a five-point advantage into the second half where they saw the Barons finally take the lead on a 20-8 run. The dominant second half led to the Barons’ 61-45 victory. Central improved to 6-4 on the year (3-3 league) while Garden Spot fell to 3-5 (2-3 league). Jahvar Hammond’s 10-point game was the top scoring performance for Spot. Joseph Sharp added nine points. The overtime victory at Cocalico improved the team’s L-L League mark to 2-2 as the Spartans battled back from an early 22-14 hole to cut the deficit to 31-26. Needing to outscore their hosts by five points or more in the fourth quarter, the Spartans did just that, closing out regulation with a 10-5 run before outscoring the Eagles 7-6 in OT. John Dykie led the Spartans with 12 points while Jesse Martin compiled 11 in the win. Brendan Weaver finished with 10. Jonathan Vega’s nine points all came from three-point range. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL In their quest for their first win of the season, the Spartans kept pace with Cocalico through three quarters of the Section Three game in New Holland on Thursday, January 28. The Eagles pulled away gradually in the final period for a 48-41 win. The second half began with Cocalico holding a one-point lead. Garden Spot went into the fourth

quarter down by only a basket. Having another stellar game for Garden Spot was Erin Gonzalez, pouring in a team-high 19 points, including a pair of three-pointers. Taylor Soehner added 13 points. The Spartans’ next outing was a Section Three match at home, facing Manheim Central. The Barons used a stingy third quarter to build on their 25-17 halftime lead, going on to top Spot 48-28. The Barons held the Spartans to one point in the third quarter and escaped a Garden Spot comeback bid in the final period. Maddie Knier was virtually unstoppable, scoring 26 of the Barons’ 48 points. Gonzalez scored nine points - all from three-point range - while Morgan Pavelik scored seven for Spot. WRESTLING The Spartans are having a strong season with returning upperclassmen as well as a few freshmen contributing to the wrestling team’s success. The efforts were showcased at Red Land over the final weekend of January as the Spartans squared off against Dover, Red Land and Central Dauphin East on Saturday, January 30. In a pair of tightly contested matches, the Spartans defeated CD East 39-29 and edged Red Land 42-27. In the match against the host school, the Patriots climbed to within three points of the Spartans at 30-27 before an Adam Hahn pin and a Patriots’ forfeit sealed the victory. The Spartans used seven pins to trounce Dover 60-18. Seniors Aaron Martin and Mason Casey, who wrestled at the 145-pound and 126-pound weight classes, respectively, each notched a pin as did juniors Jeremy Schilling (132) and Garrett Gehr (138). Mason Musser notched a pin at 215, earning the six team points with one second remaining in the second period against Anthony Barrett. Fellow sophomore Blake Weaver earned a pin at 172 while freshman Jayden Redcay earned a

first-period pin in the 152 bout. At 120, Freshman Diego Portales posted a pin in the Red Land match and earned a 15-2 major decision at the 113-weight class in the win over CD East. Schilling notched a pin 23 seconds into the 132-pound bout of the Red Land match. Along with the pin in the Dover match Gehr dominated CD East’s Aden Floyd for a 19-1 technical fall at 138. He also pinned his Red Land opponent. Sophomore Brice Brady also pinned in the Red Land match. Martin (152) pinned Brandon Paul in the CD East match and earned a 4-2 decision in the Red Land match. The CD East match was a close battle with the Panthers posting wins on technical falls in three different weight classes and a pin at the 160-pound class. The Spartans eked out a victory thanks to the Panthers forfeiting five weight classes to only one by Garden Spot. On February 3, the Spartans earned a big L-L League victory over Warwick at home. In the 4318 win, the Warriors forfeited in the first five weight classes. Hahn and Portales lost a couple of close decisions in the 106- and 113pound weight classes. Casey came through with a 15-5 major at 126 and Schilling earned a 3-2 decision over Bryn Hess at 132. Gehr notched a pin at 138 while Martin suffered a close setback, losing 7-6 at 145, facing Andrew McClune of Warwick.

AIR RIFLE The air rifle team picked up two more victories in the final week of January, improving to 9-1 on the year. Garden Spot posted winning scores of 495-490 and 498-495 over Ephrata on January 28. Tanner Donahue posted perfect scores in both matches. In the 495490 win, Donahue joined Leksi Bender in the century club. Amanda Wolfe narrowly missed posting a perfect score with her 99 while Matthew Sauder and Jack Werner both shot 98’s. In the more closely contested battle that ended in a three-point victory for the Spartans, the visiting Mountaineers featured two marksmen reaching 100 as Avan Howard and Sawyer Boll gave Garden Spot’s top shooters a good run. Werner, Donahue and Wolfe each registered 100’s while Bender and Sauder each finished at 99. The only loss suffered by the Spartans this year was a one-point loss early in the year to Manheim Central. BOWLING Garden Spot nipped Manheim Central in pins Wednesday afternoon at Cain’s Lanes. The 4-3 win improved the Spartans’ record to 25-24 (20-15 league). Garden Spot was coming off a 52 loss to Cocalico at Dutch Lanes the previous Friday. Owen Colby bowled a 218 in his first game and 216 in his third game, finishing with 629 total. As a team, the Eagles outscored the Spartans 2845 to 2713.

“‘Make all you can, save all you can, and give all you can,’” quoted Outlar. “I think that sums up what we’re trying to do.” He added, “We want to be maneuvered in God’s hands as to what we do with what God has given to us. This (workshop) is meant to be inspirational and informative.” This year’s workshop, the second held by LCCS, will take place in the large lobby of the school at 2390 New Holland Pike, Lancaster, on Saturday, March 13, from 9 a.m. to noon. The workshop will consist of three parts given by presenters who are professional advisers and parents of LCCS students. Estate Planning for

for beloved organizations (they would) like to support,” he stated. “There was praise for the quality of the speakers and the content.” Outlar added that the upcoming workshop is designed for people who may not have spent much time thinking about estate planning and who might “appreciate getting more out of their money with certain types of investments.” The workshop is free and open to the public, but those wishing to take part are asked to register by calling 717-5560711, ext. 213, or emailing soutlar@lccs.cc by Wednesday, March 10. A continental breakfast and child care will be provided. More information about the workshop may be found by visiting www.lccs.cc.

Eternity, which will focus on stewardship and leaving a legacy by implementing an estate plan, will be presented by Tim Shawaryn. “Tax Paying With a Purpose” will be presented by Jason McDougall and will explore ways to redirect funds and utilize tax strategies. The final workshop, presented by Lamar King, will be “Investing in Periods of Fear.” Material will look at keeping stewardship purposeful in times of uncertainty. Outlar said that positive feedback from the 2020 workshop, which was attended by more than 50 people, inspired the school to schedule another one. “(Attendees said) they appreciated learning ways to get the most out of investments and provide funding

After relocating to Brownstown, they began overseeing the middle school and high school ministries at Petra, soon dividing the middle school program into sections for fifth and sixth grades and seventh and eighth grades and creating a young adult ministry. “The Lord was really blessing what we were doing, and we were growing and enjoying the community here, said Brian,

The service was the beginning of a journey of growth and commitment. “The storyline of Petra is the story of a changing church, said Brian. “They were changing, moving, and evolving for 38 years. That openness to growth, Brian pointed out has

Brian earned a degree in pastoral counseling there, while Tracy’s degree is in elementary education. “Our first pastoral role was in Moorestown, N.J., at Maranatha Christian Fellowship, said Brian. Dementia Awareness Information Session Set ELANCO Dementia Friendly Community (DFC) recently joined Dementia Friendly America (DFA), rebranding the local grassroots nonprofit organization to Dementia Friendly Lancaster County. One of the initial objectives of Dementia Friendly Lancaster County is to increase the number of people who are Dementia Friends. Crystal Yunginger, the Dementia Friendly coordinator for Lancaster County, will host a virtual Dementia Friends information session on Saturday, Feb. 20, from 10 to 11 a.m. She invites all Lancaster County residents to join the virtual event to learn more about dementia and helping local people who have this condition. Dementia Friends is an initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia. It aims to transform the way people think, talk and act regarding the disease. Attendees of the information session will learn about dementia and the small ways they can help, such as telling friends about the Dementia Friends program or visiting someone they know who has dementia. Attendees will become Dementia Friends by attending the session. Having volunteered to be a Dementia Friends Champion, Yunginger is now delivering Dementia Friends sessions to people across Lancaster County. Anyone interested in attending the information session may register at www.dementiafriends pa.org/dementia-friends -information-session. Anyone interested in additional information may contact Yunginger at 717-487-6223.
