Dr. Grant Woods To Speak At Sportsman Banquet By Ann Mead Ash

“Dr. Grant Woods is a wildlife biologist and hunter specializing in deer habitat improvement and hunting techniques,” said Jaime Santiago, executive director and founder of Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM), who noted that Woods has been a consultant to comedian Jeff Foxworthy with regard to deer population growth and management. Woods’ reputation as a man who loves God, his family, and hunting makes him a good fit to speak at the fifth annual RTCM sportsman banquet, which will be held on Wednesday, March 25, at Shady Maple Banquet Hall, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. Woods is the creator of GrowingDeer.tv, a tool he uses to share his passion for managing and growing the white-tailed deer population and to provide information about deer hunting and deer management. Woods began hunting while still in elementary school. He holds degrees from Southwest Missouri State University, University of Georgia, and Clemson

University. He has spent nearly 30 years specializing in habitat improvement and researching bucks. Woods’ goal is to give hunters proven strategies, food plot techniques, and practical advice for common hunting problems and management issues. In addition to Woods’ talk, the event will include auction items going up for bids. A Chinese auction will also be held. According to Santiago, tens of thousands of dollars worth of door prizes will be given away. Santiago noted that a number of auction and door prize items have been gathered for the event. “We will have a muzzleloader, compound bows, trail cameras, tree stands, blinds, hunting backpacks, and clothing,” said Santiago. “There will be prizes for anglers and hunters, so bring your family,” he added, noting that some prizes will appeal to youths and women. The grand prize will be a Ravin R29 Crossbow. RTCM strives to help men who have been traumatized and who have turned to abusing chemicals or developed other kinds of addictions. The

Family Fun With The Thunder By Ann Mead Ash

Lucas Morrison, age 15, is listed as the Stat Guy for the Ephrata Thunder, a semipro men’s basketball team playing home games at Warwick Middle School (WMS), but according to his mother, head coach Malin Morrison, he does much more. “(Lucas) does all my promotions and statistics and everything I need on the computer,” said Malin, who noted that Lucas announces games and helps out during practice. While Lucas is a busy guy, he does not think of his work with the team in terms of job duties. “It’s a lot of fun doing this,” he said. “We’re not just a team. It’s kind of like a family. Betty Snyder, Margaret Sensenig, and Deb Burns, have been organizing the annual lasagna dinner fundraiser at Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church, 2555 Horseshoe Road, Leola, generally held on the last Saturday in February, for a number of years, and the trio runs the event like a welloiled machine. This year, however, the group had to deal with a dilemma in scheduling the dinner. “There are five Saturdays in February this year because there are 29 days,â€? said Sensenig, referencing leap year. “ We couldn’t decide whether to do the fourth or fifth Saturday.â€? The organizers settled on holding the pasta meal at the church on Saturday, Feb. 22, from 4 to 7 p.m. Each year, the group enhances the atmosphere of the church fellowship hall by adding special lighting, Italian music playing in the background, and a maĂŽtre d’ to escort guests to their tables. For this year’s event, organizers will prepare up to 100 pans of lasagna in three varieties - hamburger, hamburger and sausage, and vegetable with a red sauce.

Thunder from pg 1 that close.” The Thunder began playing in the area in the fall of 2019 as part of the American Basketball Association (ABA), which has teams in Canada, Mexico, and Australia. The team’s mascot is Bolt, a yellow bolt of lightning against a purple background. The team was formed by Pottstown native Stephen Bergman Sr., but Malin recently became the team owner, making her the only female head coach and owner in the league, which boasts more than 150 teams. In mid-January, the team was ranked 16th in the league. Each home game has had a special theme, with the final game being Ladies Night. End-ofJanuary games featured a high school theme, with local teams invited to take part. Local sponsors also have opportunities to suit up and participate. On Jan. 5, local dentist Sean Moriarty, wearing jersey No. 13, left the bench for the court just before halftime. At halftime, a local dance team took to the floor to perform. The Thunder’s final home game is slated for Saturday, Feb. 15, versus the West Chester Wildcats, at 7 p.m. Malin was coaching basketball at Lititz Christian School, where Lucas was a student, when a fellow coach suggested she consider coaching for the ABA. Malin has coached basketball for more than a decade, and she has played the game nearly her whole life. At the age of 15, she was chosen as one of eight young women from Sweden to attend basketball high school. “We train, and we get graded in basketball,” explained Malin, who was chosen as a member of the team that represented Sweden in the world championships in Turkey in 1990. After high school, Malin moved to Israel to play semiprofessional ball while studying Hebrew. She returned to Sweden and continued her

studies while working as a trainer for a team that played American football. Two of the team’s players were American, and when she played basketball against them, they suggested she play for a college team in the United States. “I got to go to Wilmington College to play basketball,” said Malin, who later transferred to the

University of Delaware, eventually earning a degree in physical therapy and Jewish studies. She also got married and moved to Lancaster County, where Lucas was born. The professional National Basketball Association developed out of the ABA in the 1960s. Well-known players, like Julius Erving, got their starts in the league. A few of the Thunder players are from Lancaster County.

“Tyler Mercer, No. 35, is from Ephrata High School, and he is our youngest player,” said Malin of the 6-foot-4-inch power forward. Guard Nasir McFadden, No. 10, played for Thaddeus Stevens, where he averaged 21 points per game. Quentin Davis, who attended Lancaster Bible College, has been playing semiprofessionally in Argentina, but he plays for the Thunder during his breaks. Other players hail from

Reading, Coatesville, and Philadelphia, while some are from as far away as Florida and Michigan. According to Lucas, Thunder games have been both close and exciting. “Last night we won by one point,” he said, referring to a Jan. 4 game against the Hub City Hogs in Hagerstown, Md. “Our point guard hit a last-second buzzer beater to win the game.” The home game on Jan. 5

was not low on excitement either, with the Thunder trailing for the entire first half and rallying just before the buzzer, but the shallow bench of the opposing Philadelphia Cannons team was a weakness Malin used to her advantage. Wearing the Cannons out, the Thunder triumphed 130 to 126 at the end of the game. For more information on the Thunder, readers may visit www.ephratathunder.com.

The gallery scheduled for the March event, which is planned for Thursday, March 19, will feature tattoos of women who work out in local gyms as part of a display called “The Tattoos of Fitness: Stories of Perseverance.” During the February event, Brenda Schilder will share her story of overcoming a major health crisis. “Overcoming my double mastectomy was a work in progress,” said Schilder. “My artwork/tattoo helped to hide the scars and restore my rainbow of life.” That same evening, Amy Thurston will share what motivated her to start Hope. Inspire. Love. The organization fights human trafficking. “These girls have powerful, life-changing stories,” said Friedrichs. “They’re willing to share, and they’re touching our hearts.” Those who attend will be welcome to share their own stories if they wish. “So many of us have something going on (that can give us) the opportunity to reach out to another woman and connect,” noted Friedrichs. “We want (women who attend) to feel connected and inspired by a story.” Both Strohecker and Friedrichs noted that the atmosphere will be conducive to conversation. “When we share our struggles and disappointments, we realize how much we have in common,” Friedrichs said. “No woman should ever feel alone.” “We want people to see God through the love that shows in that room,” said Strohecker. Strohecker and Friedrichs hope women will see the event as a place where each woman is accepted where she is and as she is, so she feels she is in a place of belonging. Readers who would like to attend the Feb. 27 event are asked to register by Wednesday, Feb. 26, by searching for “Story Marks” at Eventbrite or by calling 717-341-4444 or 717-701-9767.

state’s food code and the Food Employee Certification Act, adopted the update and declared the change in certified managers to go into effect in 2020. “We have research from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention that shows when we have a (certified) person on duty at all times, the risk of foodborne illness is reduced,” said Stacy Reed, senior extension educator with Penn State Extension. “Prevention of foodborne illness is a big deal. About 48 million people get sick (from a foodborne illness) each year, and that leads to over 128,000 being hospitalized. That means one out of every six people will get sick from a foodborne illness (annually). An estimated 3,000 people pass away from a foodborne illness every year.” Until the latest change, retail food facilities were required to have a Certified Food Protection Manager available during inspection, even if it was just someone who could go to the facility when called. With the new requirement that the person in charge - for example, a shift manager - be certified, more people will need to have their certifications. “We’re trying to be proactive and making people aware of these amendments so that we have plenty of people that are certified,” Reed said. Certification must be renewed every five years. PDA recognizes manager certification programs offered by five organizations. Penn State Extension offers local classes for the PDA-approved ServSafe program from the National Restaurant Association (NRA). The classes are typically held in groups of two, with one week separating them. A proctored exam is offered at the end of the second day, and a score of 75% or higher is required to receive a certificate. Exams may be taken four times in one year, but they must be spaced out

Working in food service involves much more than asking “Would you like fries with that?” Food service workers may be employed in grocery stores, retirement communities, schools, office building cafeterias, restaurants, and anywhere else that qualifies as a retail food establishment as defined by law. One of the top priorities of all food service workers is to keep consumers safe. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has created a model food code, which is updated every four

years, and states can create their own based on the model. According to Penn State Extension, the FDA Food Code provides updated science-based guidance and recommendations on how to handle food safely in order to reduce or prevent foodborne illnesses. Until recently, the FDA Food Code required that one person within a food service operation be a Certified Food Protection Manager. The new update, announced in February 2018, now requires that the person in charge of a facility be certified. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA), which oversees the
