Scott Hamilton To Address CrossNet Fundraiser By Ann Mead Ash
Ever since Meredith Dahl, executive director of CrossNet Ministries in New Holland, first saw a video interview with Scott Hamilton at LCBC a few years back, she hoped that he would be able to visit New Holland and speak at CrossNet’s annual fundraising banquet. “I knew pieces of the story, but when I heard the whole story, I was blown away by his testimony and what God has done in his life,” said Dahl. Dahl found an agent who told Hamilton CrossNet’s story, and Hamilton agreed to speak. “I wanted him to come here to share his story with our community … and we are so excited,”Dahl said. The legendary figure skater will share his testimony when he speaks at the CrossNet banquet on Tuesday, March 31, at Shady Maple Banquet Center, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. Doors will open at 5:15 p.m., and a buffet dinner featuring chicken and beef will begin at 6:15 p.m. Table sponsorships and tickets may be purchased.
On Wednesday, April 1, at a breakfast event, Hamilton will be interviewed by Dahl and Carl Edwards, director of development and ministries. Edwards will serve as master of ceremonies at both events. The breakfast, which will be served buffet style, will also be held at Shady Maple. Doors will open at 7:30 a.m., and breakfast will be served at 8 a.m. Meet-and-greet sponsorship opportunities are available. Tickets for the events may be purchased at www.elancocross.org or by calling 717-355-2454. Dahl also suggested readers follow CrossNet Ministries on Facebook and other social media outlets for opportunities to win chances to meet Hamilton. Hamilton has won 70 titles, awards, and honors, and he has been inducted into the United States Olympic Hall of Fame. Hamilton first captured the world’s attention in 1984 with his Olympic gold medal performance in Sarajevo in what was then Yugoslavia. He went on to share his love of the sport as a commentator. He is the author of “Landing It,”

Art Of Recycle Flourishes In Ephrata By Ann Mead Ash
When asked how she came to found the Art of Recycle in Ephrata with her husband, Josh Myers, art director Chelas Montanye quickly replied, “It (was) totally by accident.” The story of the founding of the arts entity, which has a goal of healing and growing the

community, involves an undiagnosed medical condition, the inspiration to hold life drawing sessions, and teachers asking for free school supplies. While the story arguably has more twists and turns than a crime mystery, it is all true. Montanye’s foray into the world of art began when she attended the Art Institute of Atlanta in See Art Of Recycle pg 2

ELANCO Play K Aims To Foster Kindergarten Readiness By Ann Mead Ash
On Jan. 9 at 10:30 a.m., Carla Castro Barrows, assistant director and youth services librarian at the ELANCO Library, sat down beside the colorful lily pond rug located on the second floor of the library at 11 Chestnut Drive, New Holland. Next to Barrows were some white boards and props she would use to help lead a number of area children in a 45-minute kindergarten readiness exercise. Held at the library each Thursday at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. through Feb. 27, the program, called Play K, is made possible through See ELANCO Play K pg 10
Carla Castro Barrows, assistant director and youth services librarian at the ELANCO Library, introduced children to calendar skills when they attended a Play K session at the library in New Holland in early January. The program is intended to teach concepts and skills children need as they prepare to attend kindergarten.

people at these workshops, Montanye said. Working with a ballet school, she was able to have models hold ballet poses for artists to draw. “They were gorgeous, recalled Montanye. “I had never seen a life drawing workshop where there were ballet dancers doing poses. In 2012, the first Art of Recycle opened at 27 N. State St., Ephrata. “We taught children’s and adult art workshops, Montanye said. “We had a craft castle, and after school, children would come and we would have games, snacks, and crafts for them. It was a lot of fun. The store sold donated art supplies, which attracted teachers from urban areas who asked for supplies for free. “If (students) come in without (pens and pencils), they can’t do any schoolwork, said Montanye, who learned that many teachers were purchasing supplies with their own money. She told the teachers to take what they needed. As word started to spread, she opened a Free Teacher Resource Area, now located in the basement of the current Art of Recycle at 27 Cloister Ave., Ephrata. Because the Art of Recycle is dedicated to raising the sense of community, people are welcome to volunteer or take part in activities that encourage socialization. “Anyone with a disability is welcome, said Montanye, who noted that area organizations that aid those with special needs visit the store and senior centers bring memory care patients for classes. Injured workers volunteer at the center as part of their recovery program. A variety of free clubs meet in the evenings, and classes, workshops, teas, and a variety of other activities are offered for a nominal cost. The Art of Recycle has opened a second center in Hanover, and Montanye and Myers have written a book titled “The Art Of Recycle - Creating Community Centers Through Landfill Resources. Hours and more information about the many offerings of the Art of Recycle may be found at www.artof recycle.org. Readers with specific questions may call 717466-6966.

Georgia for graphic design in the 1990s. Living in an area where many of her neighbors spoke Spanish, Montanye began to learn the language. When she was asked to help translate at construction sites, she became fluent in Spanish construction terms. Around 2001, Montanye moved to Asheville, N.C., where she met an architect who offered to teach her what she needed to know to work with masonry companies fabricating building facades. She learned to read plans and began traveling around the country to job sites. After moving to Maryland in 2005, she attended Hagerstown Community College in hopes of learning better ways to help her son, who has developmental differences. In 2007, she moved to an area outside Washington, D.C., where she discovered a town filled with art galleries. “They had First Fridays, she recalled. “You could just walk into a studio, and there would be a model, and you could just sit and sketch. As an artist, I just loved it. It was therapeutic for me. In 2008, at an art festival, she met Myers, whom she affectionately calls “Nobie because he likes to be known as Mr. Nobody Special. “We immediately connected, said Montanye, who moved to Ephrata, where Myers was living, and took a job helping to build the Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia. It was at this time that her undiagnosed medical problems became an issue. Instead of driving to Philadelphia to work, she decided to go back to her artistic roots, renting a 10-by-10-foot booth in a Lancaster co-op and later moving to the Stahr Armory. She and Myers began holding art classes. “I started having life drawings, and we would get 30 or 40

with the Remember America Speaker Series mission,” commented DCA marketing director Lisa Becker. The event is expected to draw 1,500 to 1,600 attendees, certainly the largest audience Jessie has ever faced. “I’m really excited and really nervous all at the same time,” she said. DCA headmaster Michael Myers is looking forward to hosting Huckabee. “He is a great example of a Christian who took his Christian faith seriously, even to the point of taking it to the political realm,” Myers commented. He described Huckabee as warm and welcoming, noting that those characteristics serve Huckabee well in his role as a pastor. “He’s a great exemplar of (passing on our faith to the next generation), and he can challenge us with credibility,” Myers added. “People tend to listen to him respectfully because he’s respectful.” The program will also include performances by DCA choral groups led by Lindsey Stauffer. While the singers are primarily in the upper grades, 15 members of the lower school’s Joyful Noise group will join them on stage. Additionally, a display of artifacts and media from the Faith and Liberty Discovery Center will See DCA Event pg 11

More than 200 students from school districts and independent schools throughout the region converged on the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center’s (LCCTC) Brownstown, Mount Joy, and Willow Street campuses on Feb. 14 to compete in the District 4 SkillsUSA Competitions. Career and Technology Education students brought their skills, experience, and techniques to take part in dozens of different competition categories from Automotive Skills Technology to Criminal Justice and from Job Interview Skills to Dental Assisting. The day of competitions culminated at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster, where winners were announced and awards were conferred. Many LCCTC students competed in the district-level competitions at Franklin County Career and Technology Center on Jan. 17; students from a SkillsUSA-hosting CTC often compete at an adjacent CTC in order to avoid home team bias and due to the fact that not all CTCs offer every SkillsUSA competition category. LCCTC District results from the Feb. 14 competitions are as follows: Advertising Design, Mackenzie Smith, Brownstown (BT), Commercial Art, Elizabethtown, third place; Architectural Drafting, Luke Gehlert, BT, Architectural CAD/Design, Cocalico, second place; Architectural Drafting, Jared Martin, BT, Architectural CAD/Design, Cocalico, first place; Cabinet Making, Dylan Zimmerman, BT, Cabinet Making, ELANCO, fourth place; Cabinet Making, Tyler Stauffer, BT, Cabinet Making, ELANCO, second place; Collision Repair, Andrew Bedwell, Willow Street (WS), Collision Repair, Donegal, second place; Crime Scene Investigation, Brianna Barnes/Leah Matthews/ Amy Nguyen, Mount Joy (MJ), Public Safety Academy, Elizabethtown/Cocalico/Manheim Central (respectively), first place; Criminal Justice, Steven Shepherd, MJ, Public Safety Academy, Lampeter-Strasburg, first place; Dental Assisting, Catherine Saunders, WS, Dental Assisting, Hempfield, first place; and Early Childhood Education, Amanda Buchvalt, MJ, Early Childhood Education, Manheim Central. “The Great Eight,” and “Finish First: Winning Changes Everything.” Hamilton lost his mother to cancer and later became a cancer survivor himself. He responded to those challenges by launching the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation, along with several education and survivorship programs. Hamilton founded his own skating academy at Ford Ice Center in Antioch, Tenn., where he coaches Learn to Skate students. Hamilton is an avid golfer who makes his home with his wife, Tracie, and four children outside Nashville, Tenn. Dahl noted that the theme of this year’s banquet is “Perspective.” “As a community, as we open ourselves to hear each other’s stories, we can see a different perspective,” she said. “ We can all learn from each other and make a stronger community together.” Videos that will be shown at the banquet will tie into the theme. One video will tell the story of participants in CrossNet’s Pathways to Housing, a 12- to 18-month program that focuses on empowering participants to build their resources, including financial literacy, physical health care, education, and emotional resources. Dahl will speak as well. Freewill offerings will be received at both events. Dahl said that the fundraising goal for this year’s banquet and breakfast is $200,000. Up to 1,600 people attended last year’s two events. Dahl is looking forward to seeing even more attend this year. “I am excited for this year and what God is doing in ELANCO and to come together as a community to work for a stronger ELANCO,” she said. CrossNet Ministries, located in three buildings on Franklin Street, has been a fixture in New Holland for more than 25 years. Currently, the ministry offers a youth center, food and nutrition center, Power Packs affiliation, and free summer lunch program, in addition to a number of community programs. Readers who would like to learn more about CrossNet may visit www. elancocross.org.

K programs emphasize raising hands and taking turns, so Barrows asked the children to raise their hands before speaking and continued to remind them to do so and to take turns throughout the games and exercises. Barrows focused first on calendar concepts, including the months of the year and the days of the week. Each was introduced in a song, which Barrows said she usually repeats three times, singing slowly so the children can hear all the sounds in the words. After singing the song about the days of the week a few times, Barrows began pausing after each day to let the children fill in the next day for her. To teach the seasons of the year, Barrows held an interactive discussion that involved the characteristics of the seasons. “Does anyone know what seasons are? Raise your hand if you know a season,” she began. After listening to the children’s answers, Barrows talked about winter before explaining that there are four seasons and talking about each one. “Can anyone

Barrows noted that the program has typically been held in the winter to help prepare children for kindergarten registration, but she has also repeated Play K in the summer to help children prepare for the beginning of kindergarten in the fall. “They learn through play and singing and interacting,” she said. Barrows began the program by asking all the children to sit cross-legged on the floor. She introduced a song that encouraged children with the words, “Everybody take a seat on the floor. Not on the ceiling, not on the door. Everybody take a seat where? On the floor right?” Play

Other questions included “What does winter feel like?” and “What happens to the leaves in the fall?” The familiar alphabet song also played a part in Barrows’ presentation. Not only did the children sing the song, but Barrows pulled letters from a bag and asked children to raise a hand if they knew what the letter was. One interactive exercise involved 3-D plastic fruits and vegetables. Children were encouraged to grab one of the fruits Barrows poured out in front of her and identify the fruit’s color. Group To Present Purimshpiel The Shaarai Shpielers will perform their 22nd annual Purimshpiel, “The Pajama Shpiel,” on Sunday, March 8, at 1:30 p.m. in the sanctuary at Congregation Shaarai Shomayim, 75 E. James St. Lancaster. Admission will be free. The Purimshpiel - which gets its name from the Yiddish word “spiel,” meaning play - is a comic production that features participants wearing costumes that depict the characters in the story in the Book of Esther. This book is the central text and narrative that describes what transpired on Purim and why it has become an important Jewish holiday. Each year the Shpielers take the songs from a particular American musical, parody the lyrics of those songs, and somehow merge the themes of that musical with the story of Esther. This year, they have chosen as their parody vehicle the musical “The Pajama Game.” The major roles will be played by Josh Schwartz, King Achashveyrosh; Lisa Miller, Esther; Kevin Babione, Mordechai; and Jason Meyer, Haman. Other cast members include Stu Blumenthal, Missy DePietro, Melanie DeSantis, Bobby Dickman, Eli FaulknerSchwartz, Andy Gerofsky, Barbara Harr, Aaron Kareha, Ryan Kareha, Elin Ketels, Kathy Levine, Sarah Mangan, Rabbi Jack Paskoff, Janine Riben, Rachel Rosenzweig, Martha Rowley, Harvery Scolnick, Ronda Shiffrin, Judith Singer, Colleen Stameshkin, David Stameshkin, Carol Woodman, and Alice Yerman. Alan Levine is the musical director, and Aaron Zinner is technical and set director. The show is written, directed, and produced by David Stameshkin. “The Pajama Shpiel” is intended for an adult audience and is not recommended for younger children. For more information, readers may contact the Shaarai Shomayim office at 717-3975575 or email David Stameshkin at david.stameshkin@fandm.edu.

To register, readers may call LMHS at 717-393-9745 or visit http://bit.ly/QuiltAM for the morning session or http://bit.ly/QuiltPM for the
afternoon session. A paid reservation will include complimentary admission to LMHS’ museum exhibit, “Decorated and Plain: An Amish and Mennonite Sampler.” On March 24 only, the exhibit will display 12 quilts not included in the quilt turning. The display will include the newly acquired, well-known Diamond Sampler quilt, acclaimed as “the greatest quilt ever to come from Lancaster County.” For visitors not participating in the Antique Quilt Turning, there will be a separate exhibit admission fee.
Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society will offer Antique Quilt Turning on Tuesday, March 24.

Humankind Water sells bottled water, organic tea, and lemonade with a greater purpose in mind: funding clean water projects for people around the world. “We exist to get people clean drinking water,” stated Meg Foltz. She serves as vice president of marketing for Humankind and as director of missions for the kindHuman Foundation, the nonprofit organization set up in conjunction with the company specifically to provide wells or water filtration or rain catchment systems to communities where people desperately need it. One hundred percent of net profits from Humankind sales goes toward funding clean water projects. Foltz explained that every bottle of Humankind Water that is purchased helps make it possible to get clean water to one person for 100 days. “Similarly, every gallon of our lemonade and tea that is sold gets 50 gallons of clean drinking water to people in need,” Foltz noted.

Based in Manheim, Humankind is actively involved in projects in Uganda and the Dominican Republic and has worked in Malawi, Tanzania, India, and Haiti in the past. Humankind has also provided clean water as part of disaster relief efforts in locations including Nepal, Texas, and Flint, Mich. “While our focus is primarily in meeting international needs, we are more than happy to help locally as needed,” commented Foltz. For the past four years, the kindHuman Foundation has hosted a fundraising event for the public, but this year organizers have upped the ante and are hosting not one, but two fundraisers, themed “Made For This,” at locations in Lancaster County and Philadelphia. People will be treated to entertainment by celebrity sand artist Joe Castillo, who appeared on season seven of “America’s Got Talent.” Castillo will present an artistic interpretation of a life impacted by the efforts of kindHuman. Foltz shared that organizers chose the theme “Made For This” because it speaks to the purpose and ability of all people to be difference makers
People are invited to learn more about the life-changing work being funded by Humankind at the kindHuman Foundation “Made For This” fundraisers at SUPPLY in Manheim on March 13 and at Merion Tribute House in Philadelphia on March 12. The kindHuman Foundation funds clean water projects for people in need around the world. and impact the world together. The Lancaster event will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, March 13, at SUPPLY, 280 S. Oak St., Manheim. In addition to entertainment by Castillo, the evening will include an open bar and a buffet dinner catered by Simply From Scratch. Signature cocktails incorporating Humankind beverages will also be served at the bar. The Philadelphia event is planned for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on
Thursday, March 12, at Merion Tribute House, 625 Hazelhurst Ave., Merion Station. Attendees in Philadelphia will experience the same format and entertainment as those at the Lancaster event, with a catered meal from Catering by Rich. To purchase tickets for a set fee to either event, interested individuals may visit www.be humankind.com/fundraiser by Monday, March 2. Anyone with questions may email megan@ humankindwater.org.

The AACA Museum Inc. elected Richard Sills as its 2020 president and also added four new members, Jim Hess, John Dockendorf, Chad Winters, and John Oakman, to serve on the museum’s board of directors. The changes were made at the organization’s Nov. 23, 2019, meeting and were effective on Jan. 1, 2020. With these appointments, the AACA Museum board is now composed of 20 directors. Sills is a lawyer who lives in Lancaster. A native of Philadelphia, he grew up in Drexel Hill. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He earned a master’s degree in taxation from George Washington University. He has practiced law in Washington, D.C., for most of his career. Sills, a lifelong car enthusiast, belongs to numerous car clubs and automotive history organizations. He served as national president of the Cadillac and LaSalle Club from 1998 to 2002 and was also president of the organization’s Museum and Research Center. He also served on the boards of directors of the Buick Heritage Alliance and the Humane League of Lancaster County, among other organizations. An early supporter of the AACA Museum Inc., Sills was present when the museum opened its doors for the first time in 2003. He has served on the museum’s board of directors since 2006 and, in recent years, has chaired the Exhibits Committee. Sills succeeds outgoing president Henry “Hank” Hallowell, who served as the museum’s leader from 2016 to 2020.
