HMS dives into comedic “Robin Hood”

Hinkletown Mennonite School (HMS) first performed “Robin Hood” on the school stage more than 10 years ago, but according to Denise Clymer, costume designer for the production, current students have access to scripts from past productions, and those students were able to persuade the director to resurrect the comedy for members of the sixth through eighth grades to present.

Rissler, Robin learns that his childhood friend, Maid Marian, played by Eve Martin, is engaged to marry the evil Prince John. Robin and his followers endeavor to rescue the fair maiden and fight for King Richard, who is the true king of England.

“This play is very comical, and we get to add our own twists to make it especially funny.”

“Robin Hood” takes place in medieval times in Sherwood Forest in England, where Robin, played by Aslan Umble, and his band of followers give aid to those living under the tyranny of Prince John. When Robin Hood comes up against the Sheriff of Nottingham, played by William

The one-hour play will be presented at HMS, 272 Wanner Road, Ephrata, on Friday, March 1, and Saturday, March 2. The March 1 performance will be a dinner theater, which will begin at 5:30 p.m. The March 2 performances will be held at 2 and 7 p.m. The show is directed by Jeremy Horning with assistance from Jennifer Myers and Alyssa Martin.

At one time, Terre Hill had a carpenter of note, who was known not only for his woodworking abilities, but also for his capacity to create beautiful pieces of furniture without being able to see. Royer Bixler, who died in 1998, was blind, but he was also a woodworker who was known for his skill and the finely crafted items he created, including a grandmother clock he built

in 1983. That clock was donated to the Terre Hill Borough by former Mayor A. LaVerne Zell. For many years, the clock was located in the Terre Hill Borough Hall.

In March of 2021, the Terre Hill Borough council approved a request by the Terre Hill Area Historical Society (THAHS) to move the clock to the front area of the Terre Hill Community Center, 131 W. Main St., where THAHS has been

GOTR seeks superstars for spring season

Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster opened registration for its upcoming spring season on Feb. 15. The organization will have teams in multiple school districts in Lancaster County and the surrounding area, and girls who are in third, fourth or fifth grade are invited to sign up with their local group. Registration will remain open online at http://tinyurl.com/ GOTRlanc24 until the first week of the season, which will kick off

on Monday, March 11.

Over the course of the 10-week spring season, GOTR teams will meet twice a week for a one-anda-half-hour session. During each meeting, volunteer coaches will guide team members through a curriculum designed to help young girls to develop self-confidence and various social skills. The program will incorporate physical activities to supplement every lesson and to prepare the girls for a 5K celebration at the end of the season. The 5K will be held on Saturday, May 4,

said that the cast of more than 20 took to the material quickly, with many students off book only a few days into the rehearsal schedule. “That’s very impressive,” she pointed out, noting that the cast is “well-behaved and patient.” “They take instruction and work with it,” she shared, adding that the seasoned cast members “can play around with the director’s suggestions.” Chase stated that challenges of the fast-paced show include rehearsing the actionpacked scenes in limited space so that the meaning behind the show will shine through.

Umble agreed, noting, “The play puts a comical twist on the original story (of Robin Hood), with the sheriff being portrayed as a (bumbling character).” Umble added that he enjoys taking part in theater and spending time with friends. He auditioned for the lead because he thought it would be cool to be Robin. Eve agreed that acting and connecting with people are fun parts of being in the production.

This year, GOTR will introduce a new curriculum titled “Hello Superstar.” While the new material shares many of the same goals as GOTR’s previous lessons, it will place an additional focus on the importance of inclusion and celebrating diversity. As part of the curriculum, each team will collaborate on a project that will positively impact the local community, and the girls will have an opportunity to choose where to direct the focus of the assignment. In the past, participants’ projects have

“The girls learn that it’s important to think of others while taking care of yourself, and it’s really neat to see teams choose a project meaningful to them,” said Kylie Homan, GOTR Lancaster’s program director. “They are not only making a difference in somebody’s life, but also in the community at large.”

GOTR Lancaster expects to have more than 1,200 girls and 90 teams participate in the spring season, which will require a minimum of 400 volunteer coaches. Coaches are not required to be runners themselves, and students in high school are invited to sign up as volunteers.

Riley Martin, who plays Little John, agreed, saying, “There’s lots of combat and action.” Riley pointed out that the comedic take on the classic tale relies on some sight gags such as when he is surrounded by the sheriff’s men. “The soldiers and sheriff’s men are played by the shortest people in the entire middle school,” he noted, adding, “I am the tallest person in the middle school.”

Lily Zimmerman, who played Charlotte in HMS’ 2023 production of “Charlotte’s Web,” will play Beth, one of Robin’s loyal followers. Zimmerman’s character is engaged to marry another character in the show. “That’s a little bit awkward,” she said with a chuckle, adding, “This play is very comical, and we get to add our own twists to make it especially funny.”

Chase said that the show is family friendly, offering something for both adults and children. She stated that the production provides students with a variety of ways to use their talents. “I think students at HMS are able to engage in their specific interests through this show,” she said, adding that the plan is for the large stage crew, including tech and lighting, to be student led. “On and off stage, that is a big and important reason for doing this show,” she said.

quartered since 2017. The clock was not running properly when ownership was transferred to THAHS, but Hurst’s Watch and Clock Repair restored it to working condition. THAHS member Nancy Weaver explained that the clock must be wound weekly to keep it running.

Royer had been a truck driver for a number of years before he lost the sight in one eye during an accident. Nearly 20 years later, he lost the vision in his other eye in a fishing accident. Following the second accident, Royer did not even want to leave his home on Broad Street. Members of the THAHS remember the Bixler family owning a

restaurant and delivering sandwiches to various local manufacturing facilities after Royer lost his sight. At some point, Royer’s wife, Dorothy, suggested he make her a set of lawn chairs and benches. Although he had never had any interest in woodworking, Royer took the challenge, and he never looked back, spending many happy hours working in the garage off the back of his home. Beginning with rough wood, Royer eventually learned to make finished hutches, doll cradles, benches, and tall clocks like the one the historical society now has on display. Royer used a special power saw, lathes, and

other tools to create his works of art. In addition to becoming an accomplished woodworker, Royer was also a bowler, and he took part in the National Blind Bowlers Tournament in Toronto, Canada, in 1973. Royer is buried with Dorothy in the Terre Hill cemetery.

THAHS members have invited Royer’s son, Clifford, to speak at a future meeting and share more information about his father. Meetings are held at the community center on the third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. More information about the organization may be found by searching for “Terre Hill Area Historical Society” on Facebook.

It’s more than just a summer experience. It’s an altruistic adventure, a chance to step outside the proverbial box, an opportunity to make a difference.

Aaron’s Acres is seeking applicants to help fill a handful of important and meaningful roles. The work is steady and the benefits are out of this world.

“It becomes about the experiences and getting to see the campers’ growth,” said Becky Miller, a summer group leader for Aaron’s Acres. “It just kind of turns into being there and growing a sense of pride in yourself. The amount of love shown at these camps is amazing. That’s what keeps counselors coming back for as long as they can.”

Located at 1861 Charter Lane, Suite 114, Lancaster, Aaron’s Acres is a nonprofit that works with individuals ages 5 to 21 with physical and mental disabilities. The organization is seeking counselors for its summer camp program. Specifically, Aaron’s Acres is looking for volunteer buddies age 13 and older, as well as counselors age 18 and up.

The nonprofit is hoping to add a total of 40 to 50 buddies and counselors for its summer camp, which will start its season in the middle of June.

“The best things these campers get is seeing (fellow campers) who are

similar to themselves,” said Miller. “Individuals with disabilities do really well with routine, and they get to do all these activities. Just being in an environment that is accepting of their disabilities is important. They are put into an environment where they can do anything. When they come to camp, they feel at home.”

Aaron’s Acres conducts its summer camps at New Holland Community Memorial Park, 400 E. Jackson St., New Holland. The summer camps are broken down into three 10-day sessions on Mondays through Fridays from June 17 to 28, July 8 to 19 and July 22 to Aug. 2.

The camps feature daily activities such as swimming, crafts and fitness programs; off-site field trips; and therapies like music and equine.

“(The buddies and counselors are) mostly college students, but we also have kids who want to gain experience and people who have jobs with summers off,” said Miller. “If you’ve never gone into a summer camp program, it can be intimidating, but the amount of support that comes through the program is so comforting. It’s such a good learning experience and stepping stone. It’s such a good way to get a foot in the door. Just seeing how the world works through (the campers’) eyes is so rewarding.”

Because it adheres to a strict policy of a one-to-one or one-to-two counselor-to-camper ratio, Aaron’s Acres’ summer camps are staff driven. Last summer, Aaron’s Acres turned away 100 families with disabled individuals who applied for its summer camp programs because it lacked adequate numbers of staff members.

“We’re trying to give our campers an experience in a safe environment with the support they need,” said Miller. “The need is very great. We have so many families, and it’s not the same campers every year. Last year, we were nowhere close to having the staff to accommodate everyone on

our list.”

The power of the praying mom

When organizers of the yearly Linville Hill Christian School spring banquet search for a speaker, they consider whom the entire community, not just families associated with the school, might like to hear. They also look seriously at questions facing youth. “A major challenge for young people in our nation is tremendous confusion around things that were considered basic 20 to 40 years ago,” said head of school Matt Buckwalter. After considering those challenges, school representatives chose Christopher Yuan, author of “Out of a Far Country” and “Holy Sexuality and the Gospel.” “(Christopher) has a fascinating journey,” said Buckwalter.

Christopher will be the featured speaker at the Linville Hill 2024 spring banquet on Friday, March 22, at Beechdale Farms, 458 Beechdale Road, Birdin-Hand. Appetizers will be served at 5:15 p.m., and dinner will begin at 6 p.m.

Christopher is the son of Chinese immigrants. His father, Leon, a dentist, and his mother, Angela, raised him in Chicago. Buckwalter noted that Christopher was brought up with the

understanding that he should get good grades, obey his parents, and follow in his father’s footsteps. While still in college, Christopher announced to his parents that he was engaged in an alternative lifestyle that did not align with their beliefs. He also began using and selling drugs. Three months before he was scheduled to graduate from dental school, he was kicked out. Christopher then moved to Atlanta. Before Christopher was kicked out of school, both Leon and Angela had become born-again Christians, and Angela spent much time in prayer focused on the hope that Christopher would find Christ. Arrested on drug charges, Christopher was in federal prison when he learned that he was HIV positive. One day, his focus was drawn to graffiti on his ceiling that referenced Jeremiah 29:11, which reads, “‘I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” Christopher became a Christian who now finds his identity in Christ alone. Upon leaving prison, he studied at Moody Bible Institute and

Wheaton College Graduate School, receiving his Doctor of Ministry from Bethel Seminary.

Claudia Landis, business manager at Linville Hill, noted that several staff members had heard of Christopher’s story. She said that Christopher wrote “Out of a Far Country” with Angela. “It’s a beautiful story of his conversion,” Landis reported, adding that chapters written by Angela testify to “how hard it is for parents to watch their children go through a season of such darkness and not become hopeless.”

Buckwalter acknowledged that the speaker was chosen with whole families in mind. “Oftentimes behind the story is a praying mom or grandmom who changed (the outcome),” he said. “We hope this evening will create space for young people to hear a journey to truth and to offer encouragement for those praying (parents) whose children are stuck in a really dark place that breakthrough will come.”

Buckwalter added that guiding children in their own stories is a mission of Linville Hill. “As a school, we recognize the responsibility to train our children … and part of our job is
