School Schedules Annual Pasta Dinner By Ann Mead Ash

The Brecknock Elementary spaghetti dinner is the kind of event that tends to make one remember the television commercials where the announcer always says, “But wait; there’s more!” The annual fundraiser includes not only spaghetti, but a talent show featuring Brecknock students and prizes and giveaways ranging from gift certificates to themed baskets. This year’s spaghetti dinner fundraiser will take place on Friday, March 13, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the school, 361 School Road, Denver. It will benefit the Brecknock Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). Tickets include a meal of spaghetti

with red sauce, with or without meatballs, plus a salad and a roll. A variety of desserts will be available for purchase at a nominal charge. The talent show is designed to put Brecknock students in the spotlight throughout the evening. “We will have singing, instrumentalists, poetry reading, artwork, magic, gymnastics, and more,” said Jenny Sensenig, one of the organizers of the event. Themed baskets that have been gathered for prizes and giveaways will include a “Mommy Needs a Break” basket, a beach basket, a book basket, a family movie basket, a wine and gourmet foods basket, a chocolate lover’s basket, a little chef’s basket, a family game night basket, a dog lover’s basket, a gardening basket, and a coffee lover’s basket. Organizers have also gathered gift cards and other items See Spaghetti Dinner pg 4

The 2019 growing season was the first for the Sprouts for Peace Garden at New Holland Mennonite Church, 18 Western Ave., New Holland. According to Dawn Ranck-Hower, pastor at the church, the produce from the garden was used first in lunches for students of the Early Learning Center (ELC), which is housed in the church. Produce was also given to ELC families for their use and distributed through the CrossNet Food Pantry. “The experience … was very positive,” said Ray Hurst, who continues to lead the project. After retiring in 2019, Hurst

Ray Hurst (left) and Dawn Ranck-Hower are looking forward to planting a new garden plot at New Holland Mennonite Church. Together with the original plot, the gardens will total three-quarters of an acre. The garden committee is in need of volunteers to help plant, weed, and harvest vegetables that will be distributed to See Garden pg 7 organizations in the community.

Conestoga Christian School (CCS) will present its sixth annual Founders Dinner on Friday, March 27, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Shady Maple banquet facility, 120 Toddy Drive, East Earl. In addition to dinner and testimonies about the school by alumni and patrons, the fundraiser will feature a talk by Dr. Peter Teague, president emeritus of Lancaster Bible College (LBC), who will present “The Impact of Christian Education on Communities.” Teague was appointed president of LBC, Capital Seminary and Graduate School in 1999. He was named president emeritus, LBC ambassador and a distinguished faculty member as of Feb. 1. Teague is a frequent speaker at the Association of Biblical Higher Education Convention and the Christian Education Convention, as well as at local churches and community events.

He also serves on accreditation team visits for both second and postsecondary institutions. The banquet will also feature musical presentations by CCS students, including the ladies ensemble, which is a select group from the school choir. Also performing will be the CCS a cappella choir. The group of high school students meets for class and rehearsal four days each week. “We have many talented students,” said Deborah Kurtz, the school’s event coordinator. Kurtz noted that the fundraising dinner is open to all residents of the community, not just members of the CCS family. “We are hoping to sell tickets to people in the community to support the school,” she said. She added that event is in keeping with the school’s mission statement, “Educating the whole student - body, mind and spirit - for God.” Tickets for the dinner are currently available in various levels. Table sponsorships are also available. For more information and

began working as a camp counselor at Woodcrest Retreat in Ephrata while attending Garden Spot High School. After graduating, he went to Millersville University to study industrial technology and graphics with the hopes of going into screen printing. Gehman graduated from Millersville in 2005 with a Bachelor of Science in technology. He was working in the printing field and continuing to volunteer at Woodcrest when he began leading junior high school gym nights for TNT Youth ministry in Ephrata. “(TNT) was growing, and a position opened up for an assistant director,” recalled Gehman. He applied and was awarded the position around 2007. By 2015, he was working full time at TNT and serving as part-time youth pastor at Bethany Grace Fellowship in East Earl, and by 2018, he was working full time in youth ministry at Bethany. Meanwhile, back at CrossNet, Carl Edwards, who had been youth director, was transitioning into his new role as director of development. Dahl explained that during 2019, Edwards was working half his hours with youths and the other half planning events for the ministry. “We realized we needed a person to oversee all our youth programs to bring some unity to the youth programs with oversight and vision,” said Dahl, who had known Gehman for several years because of his work for TNT. She explained that in his new role, Gehman will work to grow the programs to serve more area youths. “What I love is (what) this youth center gives to students who come from all sorts of backgrounds, including dysfunctional families, poverty, (and a) host of stressors and trauma,” said Gehman, who noted that the youth center aims to offer a safe refuge for participants. “I love that there’s a place they can go and just be (teenagers) and enjoy being themselves and have friendships. They don’t have to pretend to be something else, and they can hang out with adults who care about them and feed them.” According to Gehman, part of his work in the directorship will be to make sure the CrossNet youth staff members are equipped to run the programs each week, but he will also be looking ahead to the future. “My role is to think about what (the youth programs) look like next year,” he said. “(To ask), ‘What does it look like (for a child) to go from our preschool program all the way through to graduation (with CrossNet)?’” Looking ahead, Gehman is thinking about ways to expand youth ministry in the foreseeable future. “My mind is starting to dream about how we continue to do what we can do, but do it to the best of our ability to reach as many (youths) as we can,” he said. “All our programs are doing the best in their areas, but what does it look like for them to be synchronized and working together? It’s exciting to think about the impact that could have on students and families in this community.” Readers who would like to learn more about CrossNet may visit www.elancocross.org.

Garden from pg 1 with the planting and harvesting. I think there are people in the community who would love to help if they knew about the need.” To plant, weed, water, and harvest, Hurst and RanckHower estimate a need for at least 20 more volunteers than they had last year. Hurst noted that certain vegetables, such as beans and snap peas, are labor intensive to harvest. “It’s two or three days a week,” he noted. Those who wish to volunteer need only send the church their email address to be added to a volunteer list. “So, if Ray says we need eight people to pick beans on Tuesday evening, the volunteers can go in and sign up, and then we know how many people are coming,” explained Ranck-Hower. Individuals who are interested may email the church at nhmc@frontiernet.net or call 717-354-0602. Ranck-Hower is hoping to

have the opportunity to introduce some of the less-common vegetables to ELC families. “Spaghetti squash you can use as spaghetti, and (children) love it,” she noted. “It’s almost a spaghetti casserole.” RanckHower hopes to prepare dishes and give samples to the ELC students’ parents when they pick up their children. She will provide the recipe for the dish along with the sample. Ranck-Hower noted that although the garden is located at New Holland Mennonite Church, not all the garden committee members are also church members. “By its very essence it brings the community together to produce together,” she stated. Hurst agreed. “It is an attempt to bring the community together to care for one another,” he said. Readers who would like to know more about the Sprouts for Peace Garden may visit www.newhollandmc.org.

looked at the amount of land the church owned and suggested increasing the size of the garden. He pointed out an area behind the church that he felt would be suitable and added a system to collect water from the church roof that can be run to the area for irrigation. Adding the second plot has effectively doubled the size of the garden, giving the organizers about threequarters of an acre of land on which to plant. Ranck-Hower explained that expanding the garden fit into the mission of New Holland Mennonite. “We have a strong ethic here at the church in that we believe what we have should be used,” she said. “That’s in the DNA of this church. We have all this land. (Why) are we just mowing it when it could be used to produce food?” Based on the soil, water availability, and space, Hurst has carefully planned what to plant in which garden. The garden near the front of the church will be planted with red beets, onions, cauliflower, broccoli, and lettuces. “Out back will be corn and tomatoes and the spacious things that take up a lot of room,” said Hurst. Green beans and potatoes will be included, and butternut and spaghetti squash may find their way into the gardens as well. With the expansion of the garden, Hurst and RanckHower are looking to grow the number of volunteers who are involved. “There are people in this community who need fresh veggies, and New Holland Mennonite has lots of land,” said Ranck-Hower. “We need additional gardeners to help

The Dorothy Rose Smith Concert Series, named for a longtime Highland Presbyterian Church music director, is held at Highland, 500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster. The series presents four concerts each year. According to current Highland music ministry director Paul Thorlakson, the series kicks off each fall with an organ concert. A second concert is held near Christmas, a third concert is held in the spring, and the choir and an orchestra perform a major work in June. This year, Thorlakson will be joined by friends, including clarinetist Doris Hall-Gulati and vocalists Jeffrey and Abbigail Martin, for “Paul and Friends,” an eclectic concert on Wednesday, March 11, at 7 p.m. The concert, which will include a variety of types of music, will run for 90 minutes with a brief intermission. There is no cost to attend the concert. A freewill offering will be received. Thorlakson, who has been directing at Highland for a few years, was asked by concert organizers if he would put together a concert. “I said, ‘Yes, but I would like to bring some friends along with me,’” he said, noting that he and Hall-Gulati have been friends for quite some time. “Abbigail and Jeffrey are new friends (of mine) because they just came to Lancaster a few weeks ago,” said Thorlakson, who introduced Jeffrey as a new professor at Lancaster Bible College. Jeffrey and Abbigail met at Johns Hopkins Peabody Institute when they were assigned the same opera to study. “… And the rest is history,” said Jeffrey. “Music brought us together.” The group is looking forward to playing together at Highland. “Highland’s acoustics are wonderful,” said Hall-Gulati. Thorlakson echoed her comments, saying that it will be a good venue for the concert, which he called a “potpourri (of music) heavier on the romantic side.” As a pianist, he noted that he will play solos, instrumental duets, accompaniment, and more on the new Steinway D concert grand piano that was recently purchased by Highland following a worship and mission enhancement campaign that raised $400,000. “This will be the first Dorothy Rose Smith Concert that features that piano,” said Thorlakson. In addition to Thorlakson’s piano solos, Hall-Gulati noted that saxophone music and opera will be part of the mix. “(The concert) will be stylistically diverse,” said Thorlakson. “There will be some musical theater and art song.” The musicians said to expect up to eight numbers including piano and clarinet duets, piano and voice, and piano and voice and clarinet.

He outscored Gordy Hoover of Hempfield 4-0 in the first round before registering a pin. Swanson followed that with a 6-2 victory and a first-period pin in the semifinals match against Warwick’s Matt Woolley. The 6-2 decision was against Wyatt Hull of Chambersburg, an opponent against whom he had gone 1-1 this season. Swanson took a lead in the third period on an escape to break a tie. Holton had a late takedown to decide the outcome of the match. Swanson entered the finals with a 33-4 record. Martin finished third in the heavyweight class. His 9-3 victory over Donovan Bair of Northern started with a flurry of points, posting five in the first period. The win advanced Martin to the quarterfinals where he put up five third-period points to overtake Nasier Spellman of York Suburban 7-6. The close match result didn’t go Martin’s way in the semis where he finished on the short end of a 3-2 decision with Conrad Weiser’s Adam Kase. “Charles needed to win his next Photo by Vaughn Brown Spartan heavyweight Charles Martin faces off with York Subur- match to qualify for states,” Bunting ban’s Nasier Spellman during a quarterfinal bout in the South noted. The accomplishments of these wrestlers as well as the effort of teammates Alan Perez, Josh Groff, and Mason Casey helped compile 62 team points, which was good for eighth place overall - only a point behind Dallastown. Central Dauphin had 162 points to finish first. Cumberland Valley was a distance second at 108 points. Gehr qualified for states by finishing second in the 145-pound weight class. “He had three straight dominant

Saturday, he made it a third straight win as he posted a 5-3 decision over Shelley. Spellman was again in his way as Martin took to the mat for the thirdplace match. Trailing 5-3 in the third period, he earned a pin to take third place and raise his record to 32-8. “He made another late comeback,” Bunting said. “He worked a head lever to a half and pinned Spellman to finish his tournament with a win.” Perez suffered a loss in the first round of the 160-pound class. In the consis, he lost a close 4-2 decision to Hunter Sweitzer of Dallastown after taking a 2-0 lead. “Alan was handed a tall order in his first match, taking on returning state medalist Colton Zimmerman of Carlisle,” Bunting explained. “He pushed Zimmerman but ended up losing by a technical fall 20-5. “He wrestled a dead even 2-2 in his consolation, but came up on the wrong end of a hard-fought scramble surrendering a takedown in overtime,” added the coach. Perez ended the year 21-13 and ends his career at Garden Spot as a district qualifier. Another wrestler to get a difficult first opponent was Groff in the 138-pound brackets. He lost a 2-0 decision to finalist Liam Strouse of Northern York. The eventual silver medalist won 2-0 in overtime. Noah Rice of York Suburban won the first consolation match 7-3 after having gone ahead 3-1. “He had an admirable season, all things considered,” Bunting said. “He was battling an elbow injury all year long and ended his year 24-9 and his career with over 100 wins.”

Groff’s career 105 wins included a 2019 state tournament and a league runner up this season plus three Section 1 championships. Mason Casey pinned Jackson Houghton of Solanco in the opening round of the 126-pound class. Returning state medalist Cole Wilson of Northern,

who would go on to finish second on Saturday, earned a pin against Casey (33-8). In the consis, Lance Beckner of New Oxford came back to win 7-6, ending Casey’s season at 33-9. “He finished an outstanding junior campaign,” commented the coach. “He will set his goals on states next year.”

Thorlakson credited Dorothy Rose Smith with building the musical program at Highland. “When she passed away, the people at Highland decided to start a concert series,” he said, noting that the series is supported by a number of patrons. He believes the tradition of kicking off with a fall organ concert is based on the church’s purchasing a new organ in the fall at about the time the series began. In the case of inclement weather, information about the concert may be found at www.highlandpc.org.

transported more than 1,000 infants, toddlers, and school-age children in its fleet of ambulances and other vehicles. While the emergency medical service’s staff members are all credentialed to provide medical care to children, only some of the vehicles had the necessary equipment to safely transport newborns. According to Rick Pearson, Lancaster EMS director of education, a team spent 500 hours researching safety equipment for pediatric transport. In 2016, a new protocol was introduced in Pennsylvania that specified that in the event of a field birth where a child was born outside of a hospital or other medical facility - the mother and baby cannot be transported together. Instead, each person is supposed to have their own ambulance and dedicated team of paramedics or emergency medical technicians. When an adult is transported in an ambulance, seatbelt-like straps are used to secure the person to the gurney. Straps cross the legs and torso and come over the head, preventing side-to-side and backand-forth movements. For children, however, the devices used by Lancaster EMS had been rated to a minimum of 10 pounds, which is too big for most newborns. That prompted the search, with the resulting acquisition of ambulance

dren ranging in weight from 4 to 11 pounds up to 100 pounds. The child is strapped into the flexible harness, which is secured to the gurney frame. The devices are made of breathable fabric to allow maximum airflow and to meet infection control standards. They are machine-washable for easy cleanup. The straps are padded to keep children comfortable and to reduce the risk of pressure sores from long-distance transportation. The ACR kits are not cheap, but Lancaster EMS leaders want its 23 fleet vehicles to each have a kit. At the very least, the goal is to outfit the 15 ambulances that are in service during the course of a day with ACRs. Lancaster EMS started off with five kits, but thanks to a $4,771.97 grant from Highmark Blue Shield, the organization was able to purchase seven additional kits. Now, all advanced life support vehicles - also known as mobile intensive care units - as well as a basic life support vehicle and a supervisor vehicle have ACR kits. The ambulances each have a sticker declaring them as “prepared for pediatrics.” Lancaster EMS meets all of the standards of the master level that were established as part of a voluntary pediatric recognition program supported by the Pennsylvania Department of Health, the Pennsylvania Emergency Health Services Council, and

Highmark Blue Shield representatives Taylor Bleiler (third from left) and Kyra Melleby (middle) presented a check to Lancaster EMS staff members (from left) Bob May, Jerry Schramm, Ryan Greiner, Marisa Seubert, and Rick Pearson. The grant was used to purchase ambulance child restraints to facilitate the safe transports of newborns and older children. the Emergency Medical Services for Children organization. Master level ranks just below the maximum available and indicates that Lancaster EMS conducts regular pediatric community education and provides pediatric-specific training for staff members. All staff members must have clear background checks as well. To reach the top level, Lancaster EMS must submit paperwork indicating that it has a person certified to perform car seat safety checks on staff. “We’re not complacent,” director of operation Jerry Schramm remarked. Additionally, Lancaster EMS is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance

Services, which promotes national standards of excellence. Just 186 ambulance services out of the country’s 21,000 agencies are nationally accredited, and Lancaster EMS is one of only five in Pennsylvania. Accreditation may be renewed or revoked following an evaluation every three years. Grants to purchase additional ACR kits are pending, said marketing and development coordinator Marisa Seubert, but donations are always welcome. Anyone who would like to contribute may contact Seubert at marisa_seubert@lemsa.com or 717-872-4688, ext. 231. To learn more about Lancaster EMS, readers may visit www.lemsa.com.
