New Holland Lions Club member Dustin Spencer was not sure when the club first held a fundraiser spaghetti dinner for Garden Spot High School (GSHS) sports teams, but he did not hesitate to do some research on the subject. “I remember (attending the dinners) when I was a little kid,” said Spencer, who later reported that the first dinner was held in 1994.

This year’s all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner will be held on Saturday, March 23, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the cafeteria at GSHS, 669 E. Main St., New Holland. For 2024, the Lions are partnering with the New Holland Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) Lodge 413 to hold the event.

“This is our first dinner since 2019,” said Spencer, who noted that the benefit was interrupted in 2020 by COVID-19 restrictions. This year’s menu will include

spaghetti and meatballs, salad, bread, and a variety of desserts. The eat-in option will be all-youcan-eat, but per-ticket takeout meals will be also be available.

The event has benefited the GSHS baseball team for at least 10 years, and this year, the lacrosse program will benefit as well. “We do the behind-thescenes work,” said Spencer. “The kids on the teams will be the servers, clear the tables, and seat people.”

Tickets may be purchased from Spencer by calling 717-203-3225 or from Odd Fellows member Ralph Hess at 717-354-2200. Tickets should also be available at the door on the night of the dinner.

“In 2019, we sold 800 tickets,” recalled Spencer, who said the event was so well attended, kitchen workers had to go to a nearby grocery store to purchase more food. Spencer said he would be happy to see 700 attend this

Happy Easter meals

Amy Marburger, food and nutrition manager with CrossNet Ministries, is not sure exactly how long the organization has been giving away special Easter meals, but this is her fifth year serving them, and she knows they were distributed for at least seven years before she took the position. In 2023, Marburger oversaw the preparation of 125 meal packs with more assembled later for a total of 135. This year, she plans to prepare 150 to give away.

The 2024 Easter meal will be distributed from a CrossNet van

Local quilts help support Fairmount’s Sharing Fund

In 1990, Fairmount held its first auction and chicken barbecue. From the beginning, handmade quilts, made by area sewists, have been a part of the event. “In the first year, a quilt was donated, which was what started the auction,” reported Swailes. “Then in the next couple of years, people would donate completed quilts (to be sold).”

According to Swailes, about four or five years after the first auction, the initial Quilting Days

was held. Quilting Days brings together stitchers who live in the area surrounding Fairmount, which is located on a plateau in Ephrata high above the surrounding farm fields, to stitch beautiful quilts, which are later sold to benefit the organization’s Sharing Fund.

This year, Quilting Days took place in Fairmount’s Farm Crest Community Room, 1100 Farm Crest Drive, Ephrata, on Feb. 17, 20, and 21, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. More than 200 quilters gathered over the three days.

During that time, they stitched quilt tops on up to a dozen racks. A total of 10 quilts were completed, with another four nearly completed. “The unfinished quilts will be set up in a quilting area for Fairmount residents to complete,” explained Carol Swailes, Fairmount public relations coordinator and a quilter herself. “(Residents) will probably (be working on one quilt at a time) most of the time between now and auction day.”

All the finished quilts will be sold at the 2024 auction and chicken barbecue, which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14, at New Covenant Mennonite Fellowship, 529 E. Farmersville Road, New Holland.

Quilting Days brings local residents together in community, and the bright shades of the quilts and the soft voices of the women chatting as they work provide an interlude during the cold and often dark days of February. Quilting Days attracts many Fairmount residents and local families. Swailes noted that groups of sisters were gathered at some quilt racks.

When Swailes visited the gathering on Feb. 21, she noted that this year’s quilt tops are especially colorful. She recalled that black and gold were predominant colors last year. “This year there isn’t a decisive color scheme,” noted Swailes. Indeed, for 2024, a variety

of hues, including pink and green, light blue, and cranberry and white were present. “I think what makes a really great quilt is contrast (in the colors),” said Swailes, pointing out a quilt that used black pieces to frame brightly hued squares. As she walked between the rows of sewists, Swailes pointed out the small plastic containers sitting on top of the material. “When you quilt, you keep a little plastic cup on the quilt all the time to keep extra

Sierra Club seeking grant proposals

The Sierra Club - Lancaster Group will accept proposals for the next round of its “green project” grants through Sunday, March 31. Any Lancaster County 501(c) (3) organization with a project that promotes sustainability, expands environmental awareness and improves green infrastructure is eligible to apply for a grant.

The program annually awards grants of up to $500 to charitable, educational or business 501(c)(3) groups that demonstrate a commitment to the Sierra Club’s mission of “exploring, enjoying and protecting the planet” in Lancaster County. When applying for a grant, organizations should consider how their projects relate to an ecological preservation or educational effort. Projects may focus on topics such as storm water management, rain gardens and rain barrels; native plantings; pollinator plants; organic gardens; composting programs; or hands-on learning. The Lancaster Group will offer its expertise and labor to support the projects that are awarded grants. Eightyfour organizations have been awarded grants over the past eight years.

threads in,” said Swailes, who observed the many quilt patterns and talked to the stitchers about their work. Often a pattern goes by more than one moniker or combines the names of a few different patterns. One group called the quilt the members were stitching an Irish Chain Postage Stamp, but then noted that the real name was Rainbow Around the World. One black, white, aqua, and teal quilt pattern was called Kaleidoscope, and a cranberry, black, and white quilt done in applique and emblazoned with the words “I Am the Rose of Sharon, the Lily of the Valley” was called Log Cabin Star. “There’s one over here that I find interesting because it’s kind of whimsical,” noted Swailes, pointing out a double wedding ring patterned quilt done in black, tan, white, and cream. Another quilt sported a pattern called Boston Commons.

Fairmount’s Sharing Fund, which aids residents who have exhausted their finances, has an annual budget of $2.8 million. Fairmount, a nonprofit retirement community founded in 1968, is located on two adjoining campuses in Ephrata. Readers who would like to know more about the organization may visit https:// fairmounthomes.org.

To apply, visit http:// lancastersierraclub.org/ grant-program/. After submission, an email will be returned to confirm that the proposal has been received.

Winners will be announced on Earth Day, Monday, April 22, and soon after, a list of the awardees will be posted at www.lancastersierra club.org.

The grant program has been supported by funds raised primarily through the Lancaster Group’s former Polar Bear 5K Trail Run/Hikes and, more recently, from funds received through its participation in Lancaster’s annual ExtraGive. The drive-through pickup will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. CrossNet clients who have appointments on Wednesday, March 27, may pick up their meals at that time.

Each meal will include a ham, which CrossNet purchases at a discount; potatoes, donated by Shady Maple; carrots; eggs purchased from Community Action Partnership and the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank; corn and green beans, being collected through

a Manna Bag donation program at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church; chicken noodle soup; rice; canned fruit; dessert items; and candy bags purchased at the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank.

Families and individuals in need of meals may call 717-355-2454 and press 1 for the food pantry to sign up by Monday, March 18.

Marburger said that area residents are welcome to donate items specifically for the Easter meal, but the pantry has other needs they may consider helping to meet as well.

“We’ve seen a big jump (in the number of clients

we are serving),” Marburger stated. “We are helping double (the clients) we served last January.” The higher numbers have made it especially difficult to obtain non-food items for clients. “We are struggling with keeping personal care (items) and cleaning products (on the shelves),” said Marburger, who specifically listed shampoo, body wash, deodorant, laundry detergent, and paper products among those needs. “It’s nice when they are donated,” she said. Club and museum announce strategic partnership

Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) has formed a strategic partnership with the North Museum of Nature and Science with the aim of enhancing ornithological education and outreach in southcentral Pennsylvania. The partnership will put special emphasis on finding ways to share the science of ornithology and the hobby of birding with residents of southcentral Pennsylvania and help youths develop an understanding of wild birds and the conservation issues they face.

As part of the partnership approved by the LCBC board of directors in December 2023, LCBC will now hold its September through March programs at the museum on the second Thursday of each of those months at 7 p.m. The programs are free and open to the public, and feature a speaker on a topic related to the science of ornithology and the hobby of birding.

the conservancy as a permanent outdoor classroom space. LCBC and the North Museum will also explore ways to work together to see that the museum’s world-class ornithological collection - with most specimens dating back to the 1800s - will continue to be available for generations to come.

LCBC has a long history of involvement and association with the museum resulting from the club’s early ties to Franklin & Marshall College and ornithologists and staff members at the college who were key to the museum’s founding. LCBC remains one of the longest-supporting financial contributors to the museum, supporting the museum’s natural history program and ornithological collection since its founding.

LCBC and the North Museum will also look at ways to collaborate on enhancing existing educational offerings related to wild birds and their conservation as well as expanding birding-related offerings to particularly target youths through engaging a variety of youth-focused organizations. The partnership will also open ways for both entities to collaborate on birding-related offerings at Millport Conservancy; the museum recently took charge of oversight and support roles at the conservancy and will utilize

LCBC has been dedicated to securing the cultivation of public sentiment in the preservation of Lancaster County’s native bird life since its founding in December 1937. The club is a nonprofit membership organization with a mission focused on bird observation, conservation and education, and promoting the recording and dissemination of bird observations. The club consists of more than 350 members and fulfills its mission through building partnerships and a variety of offerings, such as field trips, lectures, programs and scholarships. More information is available at www.lancasterbirdclub.org.

The Big, Big Jazz Band has the remedy. It involves tapping your feet, grooving to music, and leaving the house for a night out.

“People want to get out of the house. By this time, people are tired of snow. We’re giving people a night on the town if they want to come out,” said Al Kernc, publicity manager for the Big, Big Jazz Band.

The Big, Big Jazz Band will present its 42nd annual Beat the Winter Blahs Ball on Friday, March 8, at the Lancaster Country Club, 1466 New Holland Pike, Lancaster. The music will start at 7:30 p.m., and the event involves a cash bar and a chef’s breakfast bar at 10:30 p.m.

“It’s a really nice atmosphere,” Kernc continued. “There are tables surrounding the dance floor. People sit and listen. When the band starts, people start dancing. We play a mix of slow tunes and fast songs. The lights are down low. It’s a really nice venue overlooking the golf course.”

A nonprofit, the 20-piece Big, Big Jazz Band will play three 45-minute sets featuring swing, jazz combos and sounds of the big band era. There is an admission fee associated with the ball, but everyone is invited and Lancaster Country Club memberships are not required to attend.

“We do it for our patrons and followers,” said Kernc. “They’re just people from around Lancaster County

who have followed the band for years. We have a pretty loyal following. Some I recognize and some I don’t. They’re just people who like the big band sound.”

The Big, Big Jazz Band is hoping to draw 150 to 200 attendees to the Beat the Winter Blahs Ball in order to raise $2,000 to $3,000 for the band’s operating expenses. Of the 10 fundraisers that the Big, Big Jazz Band will play in 2024, the Beat the Winter Blahs Ball is the only whose proceeds will go back to the band.

“The proceeds go towards sustaining the band,” said Kernc. “You’ve got to keep it running. This is the one job we do to raise funds so we can play for other people. We make a little money and it goes into the music.”

Kernc explained that the band’s other events raise money for fellow nonprofits.

“We help other charities in the Susquehanna Valley raise funds. We’re a human service agency that provides music,” he said.

Organized in 1968 as the Bob Troxell Big, Big Band, the Big, Big Jazz Band is made up of four trumpets, four trombones, five saxophones, a drum kit, a bass guitar and a piano. The band also features vocalist Mary Ann Garrett and is directed by Gary Peters. A host of other musicians serve as substitutes.

Troxell, who played trombone in the Penn State Blue Band while working his way through college, entertained a lifelong love of music and passed it on to the next

Club plans bird-related program, field trips

The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) has planned several programs, which are free and open to the public.

The LCBC will hold a meeting on Thursday, March 14, at 7 p.m. at the North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster.

Todd Underwood, a professor of biology at Kutztown University (KU), will present Migration Patterns and Overwintering Locations of Veeries in South America. Veeries are songbirds that breed in dense, moist forests of eastern North America and are easily recognized by their distinctive song. Using the latest tracking technology, Underwood followed the migration of veeries from their breeding grounds to their overwintering sites in South America. The presentation will discuss patterns of veery migration and describe the overwintering locations and habitats of these birds in South America.

Underwood earned a Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Manitoba in Canada. At KU, he teaches courses on topics such as ornithology and animal behavior, and he studies the behavior and ecology of birds. For the past 25 years, his research has focused on host defenses against avian brood parasitism. Recently, he began a long-term study of the ecology of veeries breeding at French Creek State Park. Christopher M. Heckscher from Delaware State University served as a co-author on this presentation.

For more information, call 717-856-3851 or 717-725-2717.

The LCBC will also offer two field trips in March. Preregistration by 6 p.m. the day before the trip is required.

On Saturday, March 9, John Lahr will lead a trip at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area at 4:30 p.m. Participants will look for American woodcock and waterfowl. The main objective of the trip is to hear or view the courtship display of the American woodcock. To learn more, contact Lahr at

717-205-3030 or johnlahr @gmail.com.

Derek Stoner will lead a trip along the Susquehanna River starting at Wrightsville on Saturday, March 16 at 1 p.m. Attendees will look for little and black-headed gulls and other river birds. For more details, contact Stoner at 484-723-3348 or derekstoner@hotmail.com.

For more information about the LCBC, visit www .lancasterbirdclub.org, www .facebook.com/lancaster birdclub or www.instagram .com/lancasterbirdclub.

generation through his work with jazz bands at Lancaster Bible College and local high schools. Troxell started the band as a way to give back to the local community, a mission that the Big, Big Jazz Band carries on today.

In 2002, the Bob Troxell Big, Big Jazz Band became the Big, Big Jazz Band.

“It’s a big band,” said Kernc, who plays lead trumpet. “We call it a ‘Big, Big Band,’ because it has a big sound. We didn’t want it to be called ‘the Big Band.’ We

wanted something bigger and better.”

“We always strive to sound like one instrument,” added Kernc. “We all just love to play, and we’ve all been playing for years. Some are music teachers, some are music instructors, and many are lifetime musicians. We’re people who have had music be a part of our lives.”
