A store ... a family ... a legacy

Author will give presentation on Watt & Shand

When Nancy Groff was a little girl, she and her sister used to visit her great-aunt Katharine at Roslyn, the large Lancaster home of Peter Watt (of Watt & Shand), on the corner of Marietta and President avenues. Her cousin, Ted Watt, did not visit quite as often because Aunt Katharine, daughter of Peter Watt and twin sister of Groff’s grandmother, Annie, did not like little boys running around her home.

Now, Groff has written “Watt & Shand: East, West, Hame’s Best,” which tells Peter Watt’s story of coming to this country from Scotland and founding Watt & Shand with James Shand. Groff will give a presentation based on her book at the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS) meeting on Thursday, March 21, at 7 p.m. in the chapel at Garden

Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland.

The title of the book comes from the inscription carved into the fireplace mantle at Roslyn. “Anywhere you go, north, south, east, or west, home is best,” said Groff, who noted that computer programs continually changed the Scottish word “hame” to “home.” Ted proofread Groff’s manuscript, which she wrote by expanding on a seven-page paper she completed for a class in nursing school many years before.

In addition to Ted, Groff’s cousin Will Watt Campbell, a lawyer, would call her over the years with information he had found about the Watt family. “My grandmother had pumped my head full of family history,” said Groff. Campbell encouraged her to enhance what she had written. By 2018, she had pulled the college paper from a box in the attic and begun to write in earnest. By

In Dan Steinman’s office in Ephrata, there is a portable photo display called the Wall of Remembrance. The photos are of children who have died. The wall travels to BASIS (Brothers and Sisters in Support) events, and bereaved parents gather around it. “Every time we fold it up and take it (out), its getting fuller,” said Steinman, director of BASIS, who added that now the photos are put in a digital format so that they run on a screen at the event.

“Last year a dad found his son, and he took his wife over and another couple joined them and they talked. It just brings people together.”

The Wall of Remembrance will be on display at the annual BASIS Breakfast, scheduled to be held at Yoder’s Restaurant & Banquet Center, 14 S. Tower Road, New Holland, on Saturday, April 27, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. This year’s speaker Ron Schmidt, will speak on Finding Rest During Times of Unrest. The buffet breakfast is free to attend, but

Having served as master of ceremonies at a number of area concerts, Dave Smucker, director of Alliance Network, is familiar with combining live music with the opportunity to benefit a good cause. “I remembered what (those evenings were) for our community, and I saw the collaboration and the great cause that it benefited,” recalled Smucker, who thought, “Why not do it again?”

The result is Community Concert Fundraiser, hosted by Alliance Network and benefiting Preparing the Way Ministries. The

event will be held at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland, on Saturday, March 23. The concert will feature three live gospel acts. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and the concert will begin at 6 p.m.

Daniel and Emma Lynn Glick are Lancaster County musicians. Daniel plays acoustic guitar, and the pair sings together, traveling to concert venues around the country. The Glicks have recorded eight albums with their band in their “desire to encourage people and praise our Lord through song.”

October 2022, she held the finished book in her hand.

The book, which begins in the mid-1800s, tells the story of Peter starting in the Orkney Islands, where he grew up on a farm.

Peter’s brother gave him a lump sum after their parents died, and Peter went to the island’s capital city to work in a dry goods store. The owners of the store soon noticed that Peter’s management was good for business and they sent him to Hartford, Conn., to attend school in hopes that he would take over management of the store.

In America, Peter met Gilbert Thompson and James Shand, who were from southern Scotland. The trio formed a partnership and began searching for a good location to open a department store. “Someone told them the Lancaster square had a large business influence, so this is where they came,” said Groff, who recounted how Thompson died shortly after the store was opened in 1887, and the remaining partners bought out his share.

At the same time Peter was growing his store, he began to grow his family. He returned to Orkney in 1882 to marry his

sweetheart, Lizzie. Ten months after the marriage, Lizzie gave birth to Katharine and Annie, but she died seven days later. Peter hired a nurse, but he and Shand also cared for the children until Peter remarried. “They did a lot of the baths and feeding,” said Groff, noting that the business partners lived around the corner from each other. Peter had four more children, three boys and a girl, with his second wife. One of those boys, James, was Ted’s grandfather.

Groff noted that one goal in writing the book was “to continue what Peter instilled in us about always giving back … always doing something productive.” She pointed out that the partners founded the Board of Trade, which purchased Hamilton Watch and turned the flailing business around. “They brought Armstrong and Stehli’s Silk Mill to Lancaster,” Groff said. “That’s what built Lancaster County up.” The program is free and open to the public. from Lancaster County who have played music together for more than five years. Their “greatest desire is to bring honor and glory to God through our music.”

Dan and Amanda were both raised in musical families, with Dan learning to play the harmonica and Amanda the piano at age 12. Both also play other instruments, and Amanda is a songwriter. The pair met in 2016, and they soon married and began recording albums together. It is their dream to pass their love of music to their children. “God is so good, and we give Him the credit for where He has brought us, and where He will lead us,” the pair states on their web page.

Preparing the Way is a ministry that works to empower the church. The organization, which was founded by Randy and Bonnie Martin, oversees a number of efforts under the ministry’s umbrella, concentrated in Thika, Kenya, Africa. The New Holland couple are missionaries of Petra Church.

Smucker first became involved in organizing concerts when he worked with Ivan Stoltzfus to host a concert at Lancaster

Mennonite High School benefiting YWAM in 2018.

“We held that three years in a row,” recalled Smucker. “Then COVID hit, and we couldn’t host it at the school for a few years.”

Smucker decided to resurrect the event, since he knew a number of area bands. “I thought, ‘We will pick it up and make it happen,’” he said. “In years past, we had a nice crowd and a dynamic atmosphere,” he recalled. “It was wonderful.” Smucker noted that with this genre of music, often concerts are held in tents. “We can have a nice (indoor) atmosphere in this venue,” he stated.

Alliance works to bring together entrepreneurs, missions leaders, and organizations with the goal of collaborating for God’s greater purpose.

Readers who would like to purchase tickets for the event may visit https:// alliancenetwork.ticketleap .com/concert. Tickets will also be available at the door.

Children age 10 and under will be admitted free of

charge. Sponsorship opportunities are available for businesses, and Smucker is also seeking volunteers for the event. Those who wish to sponsor the event of volunteer may email dave@ allianceus.org.

Uncharted Lancaster to present annual treasure hunt

For the past three years, Uncharted Lancaster has held an annual real-life treasure hunt involving hundreds of people that has given away $4,700 to a handful of participants while raising more than $10,000 for local nonprofits like the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County (HPT).

This year, the tradition will continue with the Raiders of the Golden Osprey Adventure. The treasure hunt will kick off on Saturday, April 6, promising a five-week expedition, weekly cash prizes and the chance to win a share of $3,250.

Players will explore Lancaster and Lebanon counties over five weeks as they race to uncover the

legendary Golden Osprey, a fictional treasure hidden more than two millennia ago by ancient Phoenician explorers who discovered the Susquehanna River. There will be rewards issued for first-, secondand third-place winners.

An honorable mention will go to the fourth-place team with the highest score on the leaderboard (and not among the first three Golden Osprey finders).

All four teams will receive a full-size 3D printed commemorative Golden Osprey souvenir.

To play, participants must purchase a treasure diary; register a team beginning on Saturday, March 16; check Uncharted Lancaster’s website every Saturday at 9:30 a.m. for that week’s

Several students at Twin Valley Bible Academy (TVBA) in Narvon were recently honored in the annual essay contests sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). Taking place during the fall semester, the contests were open to students in public, private, parochial and home schools in the United States. Essays had to be original and written in English, and the judges, most of whom are veterans, evaluated the submissions based on originality, content and oral delivery.

Students from TVBA submitted essays to local VFW posts in the Voice of Democracy essay contest, for students in grades nine through 12, and the Patriot’s Pen contest, for students in grades six through eight.

In the local contests

sponsored by the Lititz VFW Post, Noah Mellinger won first place in the Patriot’s Pen contest, and Kyla Stauffer was the third-place Voice of Democracy winner.

Kathy Wiker and Kathy McCullough from the VFW post visited TVBA to present the awards.

The winners chosen by Gap VFW Post 7418 are Riley LeBon, receiving first place in the Patriot’s Pen contest; Anna Philips, first place, Voice of Democracy; and Eli Philips, second place, Voice of Democracy. Letters were sent to the academy and the students notifying them of the results.

The winners chosen by the Parkesburg VFW Post are Elizabeth Mocuta, winning first place for Patriot’s Pen, and Alyssa Broomell, winning first place for Voice of

Help wanted: Labor shortages in agriculture

The agricultural workforce is shrinking and has been for some time. The American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) estimates that roughly 2.4 million farm jobs need to be filled annually, but there has been a drastic decline in the number of workers each year.

The AFBF notes that more than 73% of farm workers are immigrants from South America and Mexico. The United States’ H-2A visa program, which allows employers who meet specific requirements to bring in foreign laborers for temporary work, has increased the number of accepted applications for immigrants to 250,000, but this number is still just a drop in the bucket in terms of labor needs.

As more farm operators reach retirement age, fewer young farmers are replacing them, possibly because a career in this sector isn’t always easy or lucrative. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, for every

dollar spent on food, a farmer receives only 7.6 cents. Farmers were predicted to lose 9.7% of total net income in 2021. Working in agriculture can also mean volatile pricing, high real estate and land costs, steep initial machinery investment costs, and physically demanding tasks.

Many people with knowledge of the industry indicate that sweeping changes are warranted. Ellen Poeschl, the project director for the National Association of Agricultural Educators’ Teach Ag campaign, said that a lack of agricultural education is contributing to the worker shortage. Increasing availability of agriculture education courses across the country could build interest in the industry. Connecting students to internships or mentors may help, too.

Another option is to rally for greater economic opportunities in agriculture. Those working in the industry may look for innovative ways to make

the economic benefits more competitive to other industries, and improve working conditions and job flexibility. Agricultural industries currently average only 60% of what other industries offer in salaries. Farm wages have been rising due to the H-2A program, which requires farm worker pay to be higher than the state and federal minimum wage. Further change may be possible, but this may have to come at the federal level or be sparked by efforts on the part of agricultural advocacy groups.

Additional strategies farm operators may employ to combat shortages include integrating technology to reduce labor burdens, switching to crops that require fewer laborers, leasing portions of land to make extra money, and employing temporary guest workers.

Worker shortages continue to be problematic for the agricultural industry, but a variety of tactics may be available to address the issue.

The future of agriculture

formed many industries, and it can do the same for agriculture. Farming supply chains can communicate with one another by getting feedback from customers in real time through social media. However, agricultural operations may have to devote extra time to manage social media presence, especially since misinformation is so widespread on social media. Apart from social media, local farmers may increase their efforts to utilize mobile apps and direct-to-consumer purchasing options. The global pandemic helped businesses reimagine takeout and curbside shopping. Local farms may consider marketing to the

home-shopping community, providing ways to deliver produce, fresh meat and poultry, and other items direct to customers’ homes.

Regenerative agriculture

The future may feature a significant shift in the way farms source their ingredients. Farmers may try regenerative agriculture, which describes farming and grazing practices that may help reverse climate change by rebuilding soil organic matter and restoring degraded soil biodiversity.

Technological advancement

Technology will likely continue to play important and growing roles in

farming operations. New agricultural technologies can collect data on soil and plant health and produce results in real time. Precision farming technology can be developed to deliver integrated solutions no matter the size of the operation.

Shift in what products are grown

Certain crops are being utilized in new and innovative ways, and they’re only the start as consumers have expanded their views on plant-based foods and products.

While there’s no way to see into the future, individuals can likely expect changes in the agricultural sector in the decades ahead.

Schmidt serves as the lead chaplain at Christ’s Home, Warminster and Paradise. He leads a team of seven chaplains for the organization, which ministers to disadvantaged children and senior adults. Schmidt chairs the board of Endure International, an organization working to share the Gospel in the Middle East and to aid persecuted Christians.

Schmidt has also been an adjunct professor with the former Philadelphia Biblical University and a Bible conference speaker. He is also a bereaved parent.

Steinman first heard Schmidt speak at Harvey Cedars Bible Conference in New Jersey a few years ago. “(Schmidt’s) son had died,” recalled Steinman. “I liked the way he spoke.” Steinman returned to Harvey Cedars in the fall of 2023 to hear Schmidt again, and after that he contacted the chaplain about speaking at the BASIS breakfast.

Steinman said the event gives attendees plenty of time to converse with others who have experienced the grief of losing a child. “We start with a prayer, and we have the message,” he said. “We give (attendees) an opportunity to talk to other bereaved parents.” The breakfast is designed for bereaved parents or a parent and a support person.

Support is what BASIS is all about, and the organization hosts several groups around the county, including those that meet in the greater Akron, Mount Joy, Paradise, Strasburg, and Quarryville areas. The newest group meets the third Thursday of each month at 10 a.m. at the Handi-Vangelism offices, 3261 Rothsville Road, Akron. Steinman explained that the group is for those who would rather not drive at night.

BASIS has recently begun producing quarterly podcasts, which can be found at www.hvmi.org/hopeingrief.

“People may not be sure whether to take part in a group or not,” explained Steinman, “but they hear (the podcast and) they may recognize how they feel and check the group out.”
