Exploring The Arts - Summers At Cavod BY ANN MEAD ASH

“There’s a lot happening at Cavod this summer,” said Connie Dienner, director at Cavod Academy of the Arts. Dienner

went on to describe four different camp experiences - Stars in Space Camp, a production of “Seussical Jr.,” Summer Dance Intensive, and Camp Create - that will be held at Cavod Academy

and Cavod Theatre in the summer of 2022. Stars in Space Camp will be offered for two different age groups. Children ages 3 to 6 will meet at Cavod Academy,

665 W. Main St., New Holland, from 9 a.m. to noon from Monday, July 11, to Friday, July 15. Youth ages 7 to 12 will meet on the same days at the same location from 1 to 5 p.m. each day. “(Stars in

Space Camp) is really a great way for a student to explore the arts,” said Dienner, who noted that the program will include tumbling, music, crafts, and dance, along with devotions and worship. See Cavod pg 5

Cavod Academy will offer several camps focused on the arts during the summer.

SAIL (Systems Aligned in Learning), a product of a collaborative effort between United Way of Lancaster and Luthercare that began more than five years ago, has endeavored to give Lancaster County children access to high-quality child care. Utilizing peer mentors, the program has worked with in-home child care providers in a variety of ways to offer children and their families enhanced services. See SAIL pg 3

“These three women will share how facing the truth of their own stories and learning from them and writing new endings led them to their purpose and how to live out their calling,” said Sandoe, who noted that the speakers will tell of how understanding the challenge and pain and joy that they experienced can be leveraged as a catalyst for change in others’ lives and the lives of communities. Sandoe noted that weathering more than two years of COVID-19 restrictions led organizers to conceive of the event. “We have heard that people are really tired … that their souls are exhausted,” said

Child care providers also received food and hand sanitizer. “It is our goal to continue (the program),” said Lorita Valente, executive director of community programs with Luthercare. “We plan to do it the last Thursday of every month at this point and add more (child care) providers and volunteers as we go along.” Volunteers are needed to help the boxes reach families around the county, ranging from Elizabethtown to Columbia to Gap. With the advent of COVID-19 and resulting restrictions, SAIL representatives knew they had to dig deeper to help families served by in-home child care providers. “One of the things we decided to do was to look at the emerging needs of the community in response to the pandemic,” said Ryan Fisher, assistant vice president of philanthropy with Luthercare. By February, that research resulted in a pilot program that brought free produce and nonperishable foods to some of the families of the approximately 40 in-home child care providers served by SAIL mentors. Musical theater camp will give students ages 10 to 18 a chance to take part in the production “Seussical Jr.” directed by Stephanie Morales. The camp will run on weekdays from July 11 to Friday, July 22, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland. Students will audition for the show, but each camper will be guaranteed a part. “(This camp) has been such a valuable experience for kids,” said Dienner. “It gives them a chance to perform on a full stage with costumes and lighting in a real theater.” The camp will include devotions, small group time, and opportunities to chat and pray. Performance of the show, which will be open to the public, will be held on Saturday, July 23, and Sunday, July 24, at 2 and 7 p.m. each day. Tickets will be necessary to attend. A Summer Dance Intensive program for intermediate and advanced dancers will be held from Monday, July 25, through Friday, July 29, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at the academy. The program, which is for students age 12 and up, will bring in guest artists to instruct the students. The camp will be held from 4 to 6:30 p.m. from Monday, Aug. 1, through Friday, Aug. 5, and a performance will be given at 6 p.m. on Aug. 5. “This has been a tremendous program,” said Dienner of Camp Create. With the average farm in Lancaster County being 77 acres, Glory Be Farm in Manheim is considered small. Duane and Tina Sauder purchased the farm, where they raise Berkshire pigs, 23 years ago. Still, it wasn’t until January 2020 that they took the crucial first steps to make their small business dreams a reality. Just before the pandemic hit, the Sauders launched their pork snack line. Fast forward two years, and the business continues to grow. In addition to online sales, several Glory Be Farm products bearing the PA Preferred label can be purchased at locations in Manheim, Mount Joy, Lititz, Ephrata, and Elizabethtown. While selling their products is vital to the farm’s success, it’s the lifestyle that makes it meaningful for the Sauders. Like many local farmers, Duane and Tina come from multigenerational farms. The ninth generation of Tina’s family is currently working the Elizabethtown farm where she grew up. For the Sauders’ two daughters, helping out on the farm is part of their normal day. From assisting with the births of piglets to muck-

ing out the stalls, 16-year-old Riley and 13-year-old Morgan share the responsibilities of the family farm. Both girls are involved in 4-H and show pigs, beef, and goats. Passing a farm on to the next generation is often a challenge as children grow up and have interests apart from farming. “We’re blessed to be able to raise them in this lifestyle and culture. … It’s a passion and a lifestyle that you don’t clock

out from,” explained Tina. A florist by trade, Tina had to cut back her hours to focus more time on the farm. When talking about launching the pork snack line just before the pandemic hit, Tina said, “People were (focusing on) getting back to their roots, shopping local. So, while the world was turning upside down, it was a good time to start the business, but we didn’t know that.” See Farming pg 7

Though Glory Be Farm may be small, Duane and Tina’s passion for farming is vast. “It’s so important for us to inspire others to go after their dreams because there were times in our lives that were hardships, and the dream seemed unattainable. One time my husband and I were talking about it, and my husband said, ‘Well, if that ever happens, glory be to God,’ and that’s where the name (of the farm) came from,” Tina said. When asked if she had an advice for those considering farming or achieving any goal, Tina responded, “You have to take that first step of faith, because you can’t steer a Morgan (left) and Riley preparing to show their Berkshire parked car very well.” pigs at the PA Farm Show

The Sauders share their farm life with followers on social media. With the popularity of farmhouse style, Tina says, many people think farming is a peaceful way of life, and they romanticize it. Using social media allows her to connect with people to share the culture and dispel myths associated with farming. “We love our livestock, and we always say that they have one bad day. …We give them the best life we can (before that day),” she noted. The Sauders’ other goal is to raise awareness. “We’re looking to bridge the gap. … Americans are at least three generations removed from the farm. … It’s our job not only to provide but

Garden Spot swimmers Peter Hasse and Kayla Parry both earned a trip to the PIAA state championships, slated for Friday and Saturday, March 18 and 19, at Bucknell University. The Garden Spot girls’ representative swam at the Class AAA competition of districts on March 4 and 5 at Cumberland Valley, earning a fourthplace finish in both the 100yard butterfly and the 200yard individual medley. “She was disappointed in her swims as she gained time in both events,” said Darin Parry, the Garden Spot swim coach. “She worked very hard between the league and district championships.” In the Lancaster-Lebanon (L-L) League championships on Feb. 11 and 12 at Wilson High School, Kayla posted a time of 2:07.04 in the 200 IM and

swam the 100 fly in 57.44 seconds, earning the second seed in districts for both events. Kayla’s time in the 200 IM at districts was 2:09.07, while she registered a time of 58.29 in the 100 fly. “She and Peter will be the first state qualifiers for Garden Spot since I have been a coach here,” Darin added. “This was a season goal for Kayla this year. We are looking forward to seeing how she does against the best swimmers in the state.” Hasse swam a 2:04.70 in the boys’ Class AA 200 IM at districts, dropping time from the 2:14 he had in the L-L League Championships. Hasse claimed fourth in the event at districts and his time was good enough for states. “Peter worked very hard this season and really came into his own,” commented the coach. “In fact, at the start of the season, making it to states

Both Lynch and Lee are mindful of the clientele at the new store, which is located in a tourist area. “We are catering to the taste of those customers,” noted Lynch of the boutique-style store. “Our mission is the same,” Lee pointed out. “We realize it’s a ministry that affects all families, but in different ways,” she said. ROFM is a faith-based, Christ-centered discipleship program for men who struggle with addictions. “We hope that (mission) will resonate with our tourist customers as it does with our local customers,” she said. Lynch agreed, noting that the second location will allow the organization to raise more funds for the work of the ministry. Lynch, who will manage both stores, joined Freedom Thrift in December 2021. Lee was instrumental in the opening of the flagship store in 2019. The new store will include clothing for men, women, and children, along with accessories for women and toys for children. Q PENNSYLVANIA AREA RESIDENTS CASH IN: It’s hard to tell how much these unsearched Vault Bags loaded with rarely seen Gov’t issued coins that everyone will be trying to get could be worth someday. That’s because each Vault Bag is known to contain nearly 3 pounds of Gov’t issued coins some dating back to the 1800’s including all those shown in today’s publication. In addition, after each bag is loaded with over 200 rarely seen coins, each verified to meet a minimum collector grade of very good or above, the dates and mint marks are never searched to determine collector values. “The vaults at Federated Mint are going empty,” said Laura A. Lynne, Director of Coin and Currency for Federated Mint. That’s because a decision by Federated Mint to release rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued coins, some worth up to 50 times their face value, means unsearched Vault Bags loaded with U. S. Gov’t issued coins dating back to the 1800’s are now being handed over to U.S. residents who find the first three digits of their zip code listed in today’s publication. “But don’t thank the Government. As Director of Coin and Currency for Federated Mint, I get paid to inform and educate the general public regarding U.S. coins. Ever since the decision by Federated Mint to release rarely seen Gov’t issued coins to the general public — I’m being asked how much are the unsearched Vault Bags worth? The answer is, there’s no way to tell. Coin values always fluctuate and there

are never any guarantees, but we do know this. Each unsearched bag weighs nearly 3 pounds and is known to contain rarely seen Morgan Silver Dollars and these coins alone could be worth $40 - $325 in collector value each according to The Official Red Book, a Guide Book of United States Coins. So there’s no telling what you’ll find until you search through all the coins. But you better believe at just $980 these unsearched Vault Bags are a steal, “said Lynne. “These are not ordinary coins you find in your pocket change. These are rarely seen silver, scarce, collectible and non-circulating U.S. coins dating back to the 1800’s so we won’t be surprised if thousands of U.S. residents claim as many as they can get their hands on. That’s because after the bags were loaded with nearly 3 pounds of Gov’t issued coins, each verified to meet a minimum collector grade quality of very good or above, the dates and mint marks were never searched to determine collector values and the bags were securely sealed. That means there’s no telling what you’ll find until you search all the coins,” said Lynne. The only thing U.S. residents who find their zip code printed in today’s publication need to do is call the National Toll-Free Hotline before the 48-hour deadline ends. This is very important. After the Vault Bags were loaded with over 200 Gov’t issued coins, each verified to meet a minimum collector grade quality of very good or above, the dates and mint marks were never searched to determine collector values. The Vault Bag fee has been set for $1,500 for residents who miss the 48-hour deadline, but for those U.S. residents who beat the 48-hour deadline the Vault Bag fee is just $980 as long as they call the National Toll-Free Hotline before the deadline ends. “Remember this, we cannot stop collectors from buying up all the unsearched bags of coins they can get in this special advertising announcement. And you better believe with each bag being loaded with nearly 3 pounds of Gov’t issued coins we’re guessing they’re going to go quick,” said Lynne. The phone lines will be ringing off the hook beginning at precisely 8:30 a.m. this morning. That’s because each unsearched Vault Bag is loaded with the rarely seen coins pictured left and highly sought after

Hertzog Honored As Businessperson Of The Year

R081074

Kristen Hertzog

Alignable.com, an online referral network for small businesses, has chosen Kristen Hertzog as Ephrata’s 2022 Businessperson of the Year. The result was announced after a national search for leaders who have gone above and beyond guiding peers and supporting entire communities as they strive to recover. The 2022 contest marked a 64% increase in participation over last year. In all, 2,400plus small business owners were elected by their peers to be their local Businesspeople of the Year across the U.S. and Canada. During the contest, which ran from Jan. 10 to Feb. 11, more than 160,000 votes and more than 32,000 testimonials were posted praising thousands of local leaders for helping their peers and communities through a turbulent year with many challenges. Hertzog is the co-owner and CEO of Hertzog Homestead LLC, a 23-acre hospitality complex in Ephrata. It includes a bed-and-breakfast; a rustic barn event venue; the Limestone Gift Shoppe, which features items created by more than 15 local crafters; and 20 acres of preserved farmland. The property has been in the Hertzog family since 1776. More information is available at www .hertzoghomestead.com. Hertzog has created unique ways to help provide partnerships with local caterers, florists, photographers, coordinators and other event-related businesses through the Hertzog Homestead event venue. She has also helped local crafters struggling to start small businesses with business coaching through her Limestone Gift Shoppe. Her influence reached far beyond the local community, and she used her Harvard certification in leadership coaching strategies to coach Ephrata business leaders and others as far away as Haiti.
