Teaching Students Real World Technology or a long time, Mike Stitzer, technology education teacher at Garden Spot High School (GSHS), has hoped to purchase an automated screen-printing press for students to learn to operate. “This piece of equipment was something I had been trying to get for many years, but it was fiscally impossible,” said Stitzer, who noted that instead students have used a manual press, which prints one shirt at a time working with ink the consistency of peanut butter. “It’s draining on your arms,” said Stitzer. By July 2022, Stitzer hopes to have a new automated press in place in the classroom, thanks to a $25,000 grant from Case New Holland (CNH). Joseph Steinmacher, GSHS technology and engineering teacher, said that the CNH Foundation gives a yearly educational grant to area schools, but that schools that receive it must wait a year before applying again. “A couple years back, they accepted our proposal for a laser cutter for our STEM lab,” said Steinmacher, who said that in the fall of
F
2021, the department looked at its equipment wish list with an eye to items that might be too expensive for the regular budget. The grant was approved in the fall and awarded on Feb. 28. Garden Spot School District will cover the difference between the grant and the cost of the press. The new press will do a lot more for GSHS students than easing the load on their arms. “One of our strengths is tying what we have here with industry,” said Stitzer. “We have new (career) pathways that we will be adopting, and a lot of them are for automation.” Stitzer added that the new press will allow him to teach maintenance and operation of automated systems and computer programming of this type of equipment. “It was the way to make (this technology) accessible to students,” he said. “This will give students the ability to (run this piece of equipment) in industry, (so they) could go out without further education and run one of these.” In addition, Stitzer pointed out that students who have physical limitations will be able to run the press themselves, rather than having a partner print the end result.

Because Carol Swailes, Fairmount public relations coordinator, is a quilter herself, she is well qualified to give a tour of the quilts-inprogress that women worked busily to complete on Feb. 16 - the third of the Quilting Days held in the Farm Crest Community Room at Fairmount this year. In 2021, Quilting Days was moved to New Covenant Mennonite Fellowship, a little less than 2 miles from Fairmount, due to COVID-19 restrictions. See Fairmount pg 2

On most Tuesday mornings, children who attend Precious Ones Preschool in the Evangelical United Methodist Church, at 276 E. Main St., New Holland, arrive by 9 a.m., play for 20 minutes, and then have learning time together before breaking into two groups. But on Feb. 8, a special guest visited at the end of learning time. Volunteer Michele Hoover brought her guinea pig, Onyx, and while the children sat in a circle on the floor, Onyx, spent time nibbling a banana peel and watermelon rind between visits to individual students. GARDEN SPOT EDITION
No matter where Quilting Days is held, the event always features a number of quilts - nearly 10 this year in a variety of colors and patterns, including Starburst, Log Cabin, and Twister. Quilts decorated with applique or with embroidery or crossstitch were also plentiful. Colors ranged from a variety of pinks, cranberries, and purples to blue and white and one done in black, gold, and cream. Most of the quilts were queen and king sizes, but a few doubles and twins were also completed.

“They have had a good turnout (of quilters),” noted Swailes, who pointed out that Quilting Days was held on Feb. 12, 15, and 16, attracting about 200 quilters to the venue. Swailes had spoken to quilter Vera Nolt, who was given a number of squares decorated with crossstitched tulips and other flowers in navy and light blue on white. Nolt put together a quilt top in coordinating colors using a Nine Patch and Star pattern surrounding the crossstitched pieces and then brought

Another quilt that utilized crossstitched patches involved colorful pink roses on a cream background with pink and purple squares arranged like chainwork around them. Quilting Days are held yearly to complete a number of quilts that will then be sold at auction during Fairmount’s annual chicken barbecue in the fall. During 2020, Fairmount streamlined its Sharing Fund benefit by holding chicken barbecue sales off-site and moving the annual auction online. For 2021, many of the activities associated with the event returned, but the fundraiser was held at New Covenant Mennonite Church. This year’s barbecue will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10. Although all the details of this year’s chicken barbecue have yet to be determined, the event generally includes a variety of children’s activities, such as a candy drop, along with the chicken barbecue meals and auctions. Precious Ones is a ministry of the church, overseen by Patty McDowell, whom the children call “Miss Patty.” Hoover assists her with help from volunteer Katie Cirito. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the school serves children ages 3 to 5 years old with all three adults present. On Wednesdays, when eight children who will be 5 years old by September attend, only two adults are present. Classes run from 9 a.m. to noon. McDowell opens each class with the Pledge of Allegiance followed by basics such as the month and the day. Sitting at the front of the classroom, McDowell teaches the students about numbers and letters. On the day Onyx visited, the number of the week was 16, and students learned the letter P, which McDowell explained is the first letter of her first name. The color of the month was pink, and McDowell asked each student wearing pink to stand. She also read a story about an animal whose name begins with the letter P - “The Pig’s Picnic.” Students also have opportunities
to stand up in front of the class to tell about themselves or about their adventures with a classroom mascot named Bobby Bear. Students take turns taking Bobby home on a Thursday and then returning him the next Tuesday along with a journal in which a family member has helped record Bobby’s adventures.

GSHS from pg 1 Steinmacher noted that the purchase ties in with both CNH’s goals for workers and GSHS’ hopes for students. “When we applied for this grant a couple years ago, CNH made it clear that one of their focuses is advanced manufacturing,” he said. “They need more individuals from the area who are trained in advanced manufacturing skills … and students learning computer programs from automated equipment like this. Even if CNH isn’t using (this exact technology), the idea is that the students are gaining these skillsets.”

Swiss Pioneer Preservation Associates will offer a presentation, “From Passau to Pennsylvania: The European Editions of the Ausbund,” at Martindale Fellowship Center, 352 Martindale Road, Ephrata, on Wednesday, March 30, at 7 p.m. Joe A. Springer and Lloyd Weiler will display the only known copy of the 1564 Ausbund, which is thought to be the first-known printed collection of hymns still in use today. Found in this first edition are hymns written by Anabaptists imprisoned at Passau in the 1530s. These hymns are numbers 81 to 130 in current Ausbunds. Springer has served as curator of the Mennonite Historical Library at Goshen College in Indiana since 1986. He will give basic information about the 1564 Ausbund and will speak about other European editions of the Ausbund and how hymns such as the “Loblied” were added. Springer works with many people interested in Anabaptist history. He especially enjoys answering history questions related to printing, hymnody, and genealogy. Admission is free, and donations will be accepted. For more details, call Raymond Zimmerman at 717-354-7139 or Weiler at 717-629-1854.
