Looking Ahead - NHAHS Works To Preserve New Holland BY ANN MEAD ASH
ew Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS) board members Don Horning and Wilbur Horning, along with Preserving New Holland capital campaign organizer Larry Shirk, are excited about the legacy the society will be able to leave to future members. “When you take the weight of a mortgage off the shoulders of an organization, it changes the way you can operate,” said Don. “… and when we turn it over to the next generation, they will get something (special).” “We will give them a solid foundation for the future,” said Shirk. Don noted that over the last year while the museum was closed, the board members had time to talk about the opportunity to purchase the building where the society museum has been located since 2011. The board felt the timing was right to move ahead. The building, commonly known as the Kauffman Building, holds a unique place in Lancaster County

history. According to Wilbur, the building at 201 to 207 E. Main St., New Holland, is the second-oldest building in the county that has been in continuous use since the 1700s. “The oldest one is in Lititz,” Wilbur said. The board enlisted Shirk to oversee the capital campaign with a goal of raising $250,000 to satisfy the mortgage and complete brick repairs on the outside of the building. A significant portion of the funds has been raised or pledged. “A lot of generous people have gotten us to this point,” said Don. “Now we need to finish.” Shirk noted that any funds raised beyond the goal amount will be used to maintain the building in the future. It is believed that the Kauffman Building dates back to the 1780s, with additions constructed before 1795 and again in 1831. A general store, hotel, and town hall have all been part of the building’s history, with the local fire company being organized in the town hall. The building was once owned by Anthony E. Roberts, who was a member

Terre Hill Residents Reach Out BY ANN MEAD ASH
In mid-December 2020, Jen Rosado of Terre Hill saw the number of people on the “Dig Out Lancaster County” page who were in need of help. She turned to her husband, Fernando Rosado Jr., and said, “This is sad. There are so many people.” The couple learned that Mike Schmelder was responding and handling requests in and near the See Neighbor pg 5

Rachel Miller, family development specialist with Community Action Partnership (CAP)/CrossNet Ministries, works to implement the Parents As Teachers (PAT) program in ELANCO School District. PAT is an evidence-based program designed to promote optimal early development. Prior to the advent of COVID-19, the program involved home visits, but for the last several months, PAT has been held virtually. According to Miller, because of high participation in the ELANCO and Cocalico school districts, the two areas were chosen to “hive off” from the county-wide meeting,

In the winter of 2020, Fairmount, a retirement community located in Ephrata, hosted its annual Quilting Days event in the Farm Crest Community Room. As had been done for many years, quilting enthusiasts, from beginner to advanced, were invited to take part in producing quilts to be sold at Fairmount’s annual benefit auction and chicken barbecue in September. The three-day quilting event was completed within weeks of the state being shut down by COVID-19 restrictions. This year, the tradition was once again observed, with quilters meeting at New Covenant Mennonite Fellowship on Farmersville Road, New Holland, on March 6, 9, and 10 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Organizer Nora Hoover said that the quilters worked on 18 quilts, which were mostly queen sized. Hoover noted that over the three days, more than 180 quilters gathered to work. “We have had good

Patterns that were spread on frames for quilting included Broken Star, Lone Star, Log Cabin Fan, and Spin Star. from around the house and adapt the activity to the child’s age. Following the activity, Miller, as the host, divides participants into virtual breakout rooms so families can take part in discussions with other members of their school district. Miller noted that the time gives parents and children a chance to get to know each other. Each PAT session typically lasts an hour, according to Miller. A 15-minute debriefing time for staff and parents who want to remain is held at the end. Parents of prekindergarten-age children in ELANCO or Cocalico school districts who wish to participate in the sessions may call 717299-7388, ext. 3205, or text 717-538-1720.
Prior to each themed session, families receive a dropoff bag, which includes the book that will be read along with many of the supplies needed for the planned activity. In keeping with Valentine’s Day, the February session theme was based on loving and caring. “We focused on social and emotional wellness,” said Miller of the program, which was called “In My Heart.” King read the book “My Heart Fills With Happiness” aloud in English, followed by Barrows reading the same book in Spanish. Next, organizers modeled several ways to engage in an activity, which involved creating hearts. Miller explained that the core resources, but not all the supplies for the activity are provided because a goal of PAT is to use things
instead holding their own virtual monthly gatherings. To make that happen, Miller and Alice Irwin of the ELANCO School District have partnered with Deeann Sherman, who was hired by CAP in 2020 to serve the Cocalico community as part of that school district’s First 10 initiative. The initiative works to connect families and schools during a child’s first 10 years. To take the program a step further, Miller and Sherman have each partnered with their local library. Miller has connected with Carla Castro Barrows, assistant director and youth services librarian, at the ELANCO Library, and Sherman has enlisted Jess King, with the Adamstown Area Library, to help with the monthly PAT virtual sessions.

The pair loaded their snowblower into their truck and went to work aiding those who could not shovel out themselves or afford to pay someone to help them. They soon developed a list of about a dozen county residents ranging from those living in Willow Street, Millersville, and Columbia to Ephrata, New Holland, and Leola. The effort gave Jen an idea. Realizing that there might be a similar need for groceries and medications, she created the “Terre Hill And Surrounding Areas Neighbors Helping Neighbors” Facebook page. “This is where we come together for our neighbors in need,” Jen posted in the “About” section on the page. Jen advertised the new page on area yard sale pages. After Crystal Yunginger, who has a background in gerontology, moved to New Holland, she asked her mother-in-law, Joan Yunginger, director of social services with CrossNet Ministries, if there were memory cafes in the area. Joan answered, “That’s on our agenda.” In March of 2019, Crystal became a volunteer with ELANCO Dementia Friendly Community (DF), an outreach of Garden Spot Village (GSV). In June of 2019, the organization launched memory cafes to provide settings for individuals with dementia and their caregivers to enjoy social engagement and conversation about relevant topics in a stigmafree environment. By September of 2020, Crystal was working as coordinator for the organization, which moved to join Dementia Friendly America (DFA) in November of that year, becoming Dementia Friendly Lancaster County

(DFLC). At the same time, Crystal became a champion for Dementia Friends PA, which gave her the opportunity to host Dementia Friends sessions. In January, Crystal held her first Dementia Friends information session in a virtual format. The session covered key messages about dementia and how it affects individuals, among other topics. It ended with participants developing a plan involving ways to make the community more dementia friendly. To introduce the organization to community members, a pamphlet about Dementia Friendly Lancaster County and a volunteer guidelines booklet have been created. The booklet outlines the ways people can serve, including an advisory board, which acts as the organization’s eyes and ears in the community, and a working group, which furthers DFA initiatives and plans events. Crystal noted that people with dementia and caregivers will be essential to the group, but that representatives from businesses and organizations will be important as well. “We want to discuss ways businesses can be more dementia friendly to customers, (such as) creating an atmosphere that is conducive to a customer with dementia or supporting an employee who is a caregiver,” she said. Melody Karick, who serves as director of memory care with GSV, noted that a goal of the organization is to eliminate stereotypes. “One of our hopes is to break the stigma of dementia, by

making people aware that it’s OK to have this disease,” she said. “We don’t need to hide it or be ashamed of it, and we are the people that can make a difference.” She added that when she trains team members at GSV’s Meadow View Memory Support campus, she focuses on showing them different approaches to a situation. “There is a way to enhance quality of life for someone who is going through this and their care partners,”
said Crystal, who is planning a Wednesday, April 28, breakfast for a limited number of people. The breakfast will bring key businesses in the Lancaster County area that are already doing dementia work on board with the organization. “(The breakfast is about) how we can partner together to make this a dementia-friendly Lancaster County,” said Crystal. Those who wish to become involved with the organization may call 717-487-6223.

Tips For Marketing With Websites WISHING YOU A BLESSED AND JOY-FILLED EASTER Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. engleonline.com | townlively.com
R069491
During the pandemic and the subsequent changes to shopping, dining, and business practices, websites have been indispensable. “More and more during COVID, (the internet) becomes the place where transactions happen. (People are) placing orders and buying products (online),” explained marketing expert Adam Grim. “Websites are the first impression for the business. In most cases these days, people are looking at your website before they’re willing to have a call with you or stop by your location.” Grim has worked in digital marketing in Lancaster County for nearly a decade. With a business partner, he built Sparrow Websites before recently shifting his focus from doing the design work to helping business owners develop content and opening Bootstrap Local. “I have a passion for those businesses who have a great idea, a lot of grit and determination, but don’t have a huge budget for marketing,” Grim said. Grim is a member of the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce and has been a guest speaker on the subject of effectively using the web to market small businesses. Additionally, he offers marketing advice with Lancaster SCORE, which provides free mentoring and education for business owners and entrepreneurs. “I’m on my second business, but I got a SCORE mentor. She’s been fantastic,” Grim commented. “Every business should have a SCORE mentor.” With how important websites are, Grim advocated spending time, if not money, to develop one. Domain names can be purchased relatively inexpensively from Google, and free or low-cost site builders like Wix, Weebly, and Webs are available. Grim recommends using SquareSpace, which has a strong search engine optimization (SEO) framework that helps websites become visible in searches. Before starting, however, business owners should plan a good messaging strategy by identifying their target audience and how the business’ service or product can solve customers’ problems, and they should create a mood board, which will lead to the creation of a style guide. Grim recommended visiting www.mystorybrand.com to help with that process. Once the site is live on the web, the next thing is to update it on a regular basis through blog posts, video content, and voice recordings. These can be uncomfortable at first, Grim noted. “For most businesses, in order to grow, (owners) need to step out a bit,” Grim shared. “For a while, I didn’t like being on camera,
so I didn’t do anything, but then I discovered podcasts. I got comfortable with them, and now I do videos.” Podcasts are a significant missed marketing opportunity, Grim said, as there are large databases of podcasts looking for guests. Even if a podcast is not local, the link will point back to the business page, which will improve rankings in search results. Other resources for business owners include www.canva.com for creating attractive visuals and www.answerthepublic.com for discovering what questions potential customers are asking. “(Go here) if you want to create helpful (website) content but don’t know where to start,” Grim advised. Readers may also visit https:// lancaster.score.org and www.boot straplocal.com for free resources. Those with questions may email Grim at adam@bootstraplocal.com.
