GSPA To Stage Rock Opera “Aida” Planned As Spring Musical

Zach Ertz Will Speak At Founders Event By Francine Fulton

By Ann Mead Ash

Directing Elton John and Tim Rice’s “Aida” - based on the tragic opera set in Egypt and featuring a cast of 50 and more than 30 musical numbers - could be a daunting task, but Josh Martin, who is currently helming the upcoming Garden Spot Performing Arts (GSPA) production of the show, is undeterred. Rather, the director is excited to bring the school edition of the show to local audiences. “The music is … by the same pair who did ‘The Lion King’ for Disney,” explained Martin. Calling the show quick-moving and audience-friendly, Martin added that the modern production differs from the original opera. “(John and Rice) have kept the heart of the story as it transitioned

Ag Week from pg 1 community service event. The chapter partnered with Jason Robbins, who roasted two pigs that were donated and prepared. Grassland FFA members helped pull the pork and pack the meat into freezer quarts, which were sold within the school and local community. Each year, the profits are donated to an organization voted upon by Grassland FFA membership. The 2019 profits of approximately $1,000 were donated to the One Acre Fund, which supports entrepreneurial farmers in East Africa. Grassland FFA concluded the week with its first Hunger Banquet. Event chair Hadassah Hoover had participated in a Hunger Banquet at a National FFA Conference she attended last summer. The

purpose of the dinner was to create an interactive, educational experience on poverty and hunger within the agricultural industry. The interactive dinner used guest participation to display disparity between classes and hunger on a world scale. The purpose of the dinner was to make guests aware of needs and then show how agriculture can impact and change those needs. Organizers plan to make it an annual event.

Grassland FFA celebrated National FFA Week during the third week of February. The local chapter held in-school events such as a spirit week, a scavenger hunt to discover agriculture facts, and activities to promote the agriculture industry, such as handing out samples of chocolate milk. The purpose of the week was to promote the components of the youth organization in addition to the industry it embraces, agriculture. Grassland FFA organized a special committee whose goals were to highlight the diversity of the industry and organization, promote prominent sectors of agriculture in Pennsylvania, and serve the community. Grassland FFA also hosted an annual event called Whole Hog, a longtime

Woodworking Club from pg 1 In November 2018, fifth-grade teacher Meghan Clisham from New Holland Elementary in ELANCO School District connected with the Garden Spot Village (GSV) wood shop to create an after-school Woodworking Club. teacher Rachel Smith chaperoned the group. Clisham said, “We intentionally piloted the program with sixth-graders because we knew the students well. Plus, the students were already familiar with Garden Spot Village because they had pen pals from Garden Spot Village last year.” Each Monday, the students broke into four groups and decided on their project for the day. Knepper provided plans and materials for four projects each week. Students chose between a

birdhouse, a stool, a toolbox and a paper towel holder. Some of the groups chose to make individual projects, and others chose to work together on a project for the school. For example, one group made a birdhouse to be used in the school courtyard, while others chose to make individual birdhouses. Knepper said he chose projects to give the students the opportunity to use each of the power machines in the wood shop. “The students seem to be very interested. Some of them have a little bit of background with woodworking,” Knepper said.

“We were really pleased to offer this opportunity to do something different,” Smith said. “It’s cool to watch (the students) use a ruler to measure the wood, learn about the safety of the equipment and interact with the residents.” Wood shop members Bob Collins, John Moore, Paul Dodge and Gordon Lash served as group leaders and helped the students with the projects. The GSV wood shop donated the materials for the projects, allowing the school to offer the club to the students at no cost.

directing GSPA, GSHS music teacher Rich Fitz suggested “Aida” several times for the spring musical. When Fitz brought the show up again more recently, Martin was ready to consider it. “I had the cast for it, but it was a chance to reach out to recruit some new students because it (calls for) an ethnically diverse cast,” explained Martin. Although students who were cast were not familiar with the show, Martin said they are coming to enjoy the challenges of staging it. “The storyline is based off the tragic opera, and it’s heavy, but the modern twist injects a ray of hope in the end that is really touching,” said Martin. According to Martin, the actors are digging deep to portray emotion that is real rather than melodramatic. “That’s been a challenge, but a satisfying challenge,” said Martin. As Aida, Gauthier said she is challenged by doing justice to playing such a strong woman. “She has this confidence,” noted Gauthier. “She doesn’t listen to anybody. She makes her own choices. I have to work on making sure the audience sees (that).” Gauthier will also be challenged by the many musical numbers that she is called upon to perform. “The music propels the story forward,” said Martin. “There’s little dialogue relative to the music.” Martin added that the music varies from fun rock ‘n’ roll numbers to enchanting ballads, citing the gospel-style “The Gods Love Nubia” and “Written in the Stars,” which was an adult contemporary hit, as examples. Martin said that “My

“Aida” is the tragic love story of a Nubian princess, Aida, played by Beatrice Gauthier. Aida is enslaved to the Pharaoh’s daughter, Amneris, played by Ellie Loose. Aida falls in love with Radames, an Egyptian soldier, played by Colin Marquis, who is engaged to Amneris. As Aida and Radames realize the depth of their love, Aida is forced to make choices that pit the longings of her heart against the duties she feels to lead the Nubian people. Martin first became acquainted with the show when he saw the original Broadway production in 2000. “I knew nothing about it, but I loved it - the show, the story, the music especially,” recalled Martin. Over the last decade that Martin has been

Race Against Racism from pg 1 fundraiser for us, and it supports our social justice programming. Specifically, we host a social justice institute four times per year.” This year’s Race Against Racism, which Hebert noted is the longest-running consecutive race against racism in the country, will be held rain or shine on Saturday, April 27. The certified 5K course will begin in Musser Park, located at East Chestnut and North Lime streets in Lancaster, at 9 a.m. Following the run, Hebert said about 70 to 80 children typically take part in a Kids’ Fun Run, which spans Musser Park. The Fun Run will be held at about 10:30 a.m., when the run is completed and the course has been cleared. The Fun Run is open to children through age 12 for a nominal fee. The 12th annual Humanity Fest, a multicultural festival, will be held in Musser Park in conjunction with the race. Humanity Fest, which will be open from 7 to 11:30 a.m., is designed to celebrate the diversity of the local community. The event will feature food, face painting, and handmade crafts. “Community organizations will have displays,” said Hebert. “The YWCA will have a table, and our sexual assault prevention and counseling center will have a table set up.”

The honorary chair of the 2019 race will be Norman Bristol Colon, who has been appointed by Gov. Tom Wolf to serve as executive director of the Governor’s 2020 Census Complete Count Commission. Colon was the first Latino/Hispanic assistant director of admissions at Millersville University (MU), where he was responsible to implement MU’s first strategy for recruitment of Latino students. The model was later used by the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. Colon was a founder and first national chair of the United States Council on Latino Affairs, an organization formed to advance the status of more than 55 million Latinos living in the U.S. According to Hebert, funds raised by the race will help cover the costs associated with Racial Justice Institute - Parts One and Two, which the organization presents several times per year. “(Each part) is a three-day course that discusses systemic oppression and racism that goes on in the country and how to combat it,” explained Hebert. “(The institute) brings diverse people into the same room (to) learn about what racism is and (how to) respect each other’s backgrounds.” Part one of the institute is open to the public; to take part two, a

participant needs to have taken part one or have other social justice training. Hebert researched the history of Lancaster’s Race Against Racism, which will be run for the 21st time this year. “From what I could find, it started in 1999, and it has been growing ever since,” said Hebert. “It was an initiative from the national YWCA.” Hebert explained that several other Races Against Racism will be held at the same time as the Lancaster race, including one in York and one in Harrisburg. The 5K course follows a route through Lancaster city. “(The course) goes down Chestnut and then by McCaskey (High School) and loops around back on Chestnut,” said Hebert, who warned runners to be wary of potholes. The course is lightly rolling with some incline toward the end and is considered good for beginners. Walkers are welcome. More information about the race may be found at https://ywcalancaster. org/raceagainstracism. Runners and walkers who register prior to Monday, April 8, will be guaranteed a T-shirt and pay a discounted fee. Water bottles will be given to registered runners while supplies last. Readers who wish to register online may do so by visiting the previously mentioned website. Registration on the day of the event will begin at 7 a.m. Teams are welcome to register online.

Zach Ertz from pg 1 According to Deborah Kurtz, the school’s event coordinator, the school specifically sought out Ertz, who is well known on the field for his dedication and work ethic and off the field for his faith and charity work. “We requested to have him come as the speaker for our fifth Founders Event,” explained Kurtz. “Every year we have a speaker who has a faith in Christ, (and) it is a fundraiser for our school. We’re hoping to sell 1,300 tickets.” Ertz, a two-time Pro Bowler, was drafted by the Eagles in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He caught the touchdown pass that resulted in the game-winning score for the Eagles in last year’s championship football game. In 2018, he broke Jason Witten’s NFL tight end single-season reception record with 116 catches. Ertz is married to 2017 U.S. National Soccer Team Player of the Year and 2015 world champion Julie Ertz. Together, they formed the Ertz Family Foundation, an organization with the

Clinic For Special Children Marks 30th Anniversary On April 4, 1989, a small pediatric practice was founded in Strasburg by Dr. Holmes Morton and his wife, Caroline Morton, along with concerned members of the medical, scientific, and Plain communities, to provide care to children with genetic or other complex disorders. The following year, a post-and-beam-style building was raised by Plain volunteers at 535 Bunker Hill Road, Strasburg, and the Clinic for Special Children (CSC) was off and running. In the three decades since its founding, the CSC has developed from its modest roots into an internationally recognized leader and innovator in rare disease research and care. According to www.clinicforspecialchildren.org, the CSC is designed to be a medical home where children with complex genetic diseases can receive the primary pediatric care they need in an accessible, comfortable, and informed environment. The clinic’s primary but not exclusive focus is on treating the uninsured Amish and Mennonite communities of southeastern Pennsylvania. In 2018, CSC provided care to more than 1,000 active patients, and in its 30-year See Clinic pg 12

The Clinic for Special Children is marking its 30th anniversary in April. From the beginning, the clinic has been a cooperative effort among the medical, scientific, and Plain communities, and the current staff serves more than 1,000 clients in Lancaster County and throughout the world.

JB Zimmerman’s from pg 1 an expanded paint department, and a live kitchen. The store was remerchandised, and several side warehouse areas were reconstructed and added on to the housewares and paint departments. In more recent years, JB Zimmerman’s added a Sealy and Stearns & Foster mattress showroom that also features Catnapper recliners, sofas, and loveseats. The grilling area was expanded to showcase Weber, Grill Zone, and Charbroil gas grills; Traeger pellet grills; and griddle stations. Now, more than 87 years after its founding, Jacob B. Zimmerman’s business is still familyowned and family-operated and continues to provide quality products at competitive prices with the personal service that Jake, as he was known to customers and neighbors, would have provided himself. “Our mission is to provide customers with the neighborly advice, excellent products, and assistance they have come to expect from us,” said Gerry Weaver, who co-owns the store with his wife, Lynda. Calvin Horst is operations manager. “We are proud to serve the community and our customers with the same strong work ethic and faith in God,” the owners noted. “Our desire is to make a difference in the lives of our employees and our customers.” The store features thousands of products and supplies, including brand-name and best-selling items to help people take care of their homes. Key brands offered include Craftsman, Weber, Traeger, Yeti, Stihl, Toro, Ego, Stearns & Foster, Sealy, and Catnapper, along with many brands of major appliances. Also offered are paint brands including Clark+Kensington, Valspar Optimus, Valspar Aspire, Benjamin Moore, and Magnolia Home. JB Zimmerman’s offers delivery, installation, and service after the sale of major appliances with factory-trained technicians on call. The store is open from 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays, 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays. Ace stores across the globe. In August 2018, the decision was made to join the Ace Hardware company. Improvements were made to the exterior and a complete reset of all departments began in September 2018. The store conversion began in December 2018 and is slated to wrap up on Saturday, March 30. JB Zimmerman’s was founded by Jacob B. Zimmerman in 1931 in Blue Ball. The first store, which focused on electrical, plumbing, and heating, was located near the Blue Ball square. It also sold Delaval milking machines and cream separators. Adding hardware to the business created a need for a new building by 1938, and the new store was built five houses west of the Blue Ball garage. Jacob and Laura later built their home beside the business. The couple’s two sons, Melvin and Charles, were incorporated into the business in 1960. When JB Zimmerman and Sons Inc. expanded by opening a store in Strasburg, Melvin and his family moved to that area in 1962 to manage it; this store soon outgrew its location, and a new store was built in 1980. The Blue Ball store continued to grow, and a new building was built less than a mile west of its location in 1974; Charles was the manager of that location. In 1971, a decision was made to become a member of the True Value co-op. This change brought a broader array of products, competitive prices, and national recognition as a quality dealer of hardware. In the late 1930s, the business began selling major appliances, and by the end of 1945, the department expanded and eventually included home entertainment products. The Blue Ball store was enlarged in 1985 to its current size of approximately 30,000 square feet. In 1992, the Delaval Dairy equipment division, which had long since graduated from selling cream separators to selling, installing, and servicing all aspects of dairy equipment, moved to its present location, the original hardware store facility at 1044 Main St., Blue Ball. The Strasburg location became independent from the original business in 1993 and was renamed Zimmerman’s Hardware Inc. The Blue Ball store took the name of JB Zimmerman in 2000. After a renovation that year, the store added a rental department,

history, the clinic has treated patients from 42 states and 17 countries. “Caring for children with special needs is the work of a community, and for three decades, the clinic has bound us together in this common purpose,” said Dr. Kevin Strauss, the clinic’s medical director. “The CSC’s mission embodies an idea that challenges each one of us to contribute; only together can we find new ways to enrich lives, alleviate suffering, and create hope. On the eve of the CSC’s 30th anniversary, we are grateful to all of those who have joined hands with us in this effort, and, in so doing, become part of a very special family.” In 1989, the genetic cause of disease was only known for a handful of disorders. Today, by utilizing CSC’s on-site biochemistry and genetics laboratory, which has been managed by Dr. Erik G. Puffenberger since 1998, more than 300 disease-causing genetic changes have been identified. In addition, in the 30 years since CSC’s founding, its staff members have published more than 110 peerreviewed research papers, fueled by close internal collaboration between clinical and laboratory staff and effective cooperation with academic, scientific, and clinical partners. To commemorate the anniversary, the clinic will be selling a limited number of copies of “30 Stories for 30 Years,” a book that features first-hand accounts written by clinic clients and families, as well as “Our Story in Newsletters,” a compilation of every clinic newsletter that has been published through 2018. These publications may be purchased in person at the clinic or by visiting https://clinicfor specialchildren.org/contact/store/. Proceeds from the sale of the books will aid the CSC in its efforts to provide affordable, cutting-edge care for clients. As a nonprofit organization, the CSC is primarily supported through community fundraising events and donations. Additionally, past and current clients and their families, as well as collaborators of the clinic, are invited to attend a 30th anniversary celebration drop-in between 3 and 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16. Guests may walk through the clinic and learn how it was established, what projects are being worked on, and what its future may hold. Mementos from the clinic’s history will be displayed, refreshments will be served, and copies of the anniversary books will be for sale. Admission to the celebration will be free of charge, but donations will be welcome. Anyone interested in providing any inkind or monetary donations to cover the cost of the event is invited to contact Julia Martin at jmartin@clinicforspecial children.org or 717-286-4288. Kylie Stoltzfus, who handles marketing and promotions for The Factory, said that the program will include a video and that organizers hope to have students who frequent the youth center present a program. PENNYSAVER - Garden Spot Edition - March 27, 2019 - 17

LSO Sets “Mozart & Mendelssohn” Concert featured in the performance. The opera “Don Giovanni” was commissioned in late 1787 as Mozart was winding down from the success of “The Marriage of Figaro,” which he had written with famed Italian librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte. For “Don Giovanni,” Da Ponte, who was overbooked at the time, adapted an existing libretto about Don Juan. Mozart and Da Ponte worked at breakneck speed to meet the deadline for the first performance on Oct. 29. On the evening

of Oct. 28, Da Ponte pointed out they were missing an overture, so Mozart worked through the night to complete the overture. Today, “Don Giovanni” is a staple of opera repertoire. Chopin was a conservatory graduate of 19 when he composed his Piano Concerto No. 2, one of two piano concertos Chopin wrote to showcase his virtuosity. Chopin was embarking on a move from Poland to Paris to further his career, and it was customary for musicians to

compose a work that displayed their talents in preparation for auditions. The concertos feature elements of Chopin’s signature style of romanticism. Mendelssohn’s “Scottish” Symphony was inspired by his visit to the ruined chapel of Holyrood Castle near Edinburgh during a grand tour of Scotland when the composer was in his early 20s and already an accomplished musician. After visiting the castle, Mendelssohn detailed the adventure in his journal and followed

the entry with 10 measures of music, which later became the main theme of his third symphony. The piece took 10 years to complete and was introduced in 1842. The success of a performance in London led to Mendelssohn’s receiving permission to dedicate it to one of his admirers, England’s Queen Victoria. To purchase tickets, readers may call the LSO box office at 717291-4420 or visit www.lancaster symphony.org. A limited number of tickets remain available.
