Two hunts in one day
Terre Hill plans annual Easter events
BY ANN MEAD ASHHolding an egg hunt for children is common in many communities, but in Terre Hill, organizers like to go above and beyond. As in the past, two egg hunts will be held on the same day - one designed for children age 10 and under and another evening event for those age 11 and up.
“The flashlight hunt is a very unique event, and it really brings out a crowd.”
The Terre Hill Easter egg hunt for children age 10 and under will be held in Terre Hill Park, 210 Lancaster Ave., Terre Hill, on Saturday, March 30. Children are welcome to bring their own basket to the free rain-or-shine event.
On the day of the hunts, the Pavilion 1 food stand will open at 11:30 a.m. to sell burgers, hot dogs, and soup, along with hot chocolate, coffee, and other beverages. At noon, a small petting zoo will open. “There will be bunnies and sheep for sure and maybe more (types of animals),” said Dan Styer, who is helping to organize the event. Free face painting by Joyful Canvas will begin at 12:30 p.m. and continue until
Church holds English classes
BY ANN MEAD ASHAccording to Pamela Hasse, one of the English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers with the Zeltenreich Reformed Church ESL program, individuals working to learn English get “lots of listening practice in day-to-day life.” “(What) they need is a safe environment to practice English, (specifically) targeted skills such as grocery shopping, going to the doctor, or applying for a job,” she said.
Zeltenreich’s ESL program, which began with an intake session on Feb. 6 with classes beginning on Feb. 13, offers that time to students at the church, 752 Hollander Road, New Holland, each Tuesday from 7 to 8:45 p.m.
Later that same day in the park, the Terre Hill flashlight egg hunt will be held for older children
3 p.m. At 1 p.m., the egg hunt for children will begin. According to organizer Noah Keckler, thousands of eggs will be set out in four areas for different age groups. Eggs will be filled with candy, coins, and prize vouchers. “There will be prize baskets for kids in every age group,” said Styer. At 1:45 p.m., local juggling group The DKers will give a free show sponsored by St. John’s Center United Church of Christ.
and adults. The snack window will open at 7 p.m. offering the same food options that will be available earlier in the day. At 8 p.m., organizers will release participants to gather the thousands of eggs placed throughout the park. Eggs containing candy
Currently, the program has two classes running with two teachers in each class until the middle of May. Classes will then begin again in September. The program’s ongoing enrollment allows students to begin at any time during the session. “We have students from Africa, South America, Mexico, and Eastern Europe,” said Pamela, who noted that the number of classes may grow as needed.
During the intake session, students were assessed on

A nursery program and a Bible club, taught by Jean Brown, are available for children who accompany their parents to class. “I have been working on ESL options for our staff and ways to create meaningful relationships between residents and staff in their ESL journeys,” said Cuthie. “I am thrilled and grateful that Zeltenreich is providing a local program that we know we can recommend for our staff to achieve a greater level of practice.”
Shoes & Boots For The Whole Family
“The Bible lesson doubles as an ESL lesson with a different set of vocabulary words,” explained Pamela, who noted that students may continue to attend classes as long as they like. “The students start at basic and move up the ladder, and there are advanced classes where the discussion is digital etiquette. They can continue, and classes change with their abilities.”
In addition to Pamela, teachers, who undertook training in the fall of 2023, include Wilma Bender, who had a vision for this type of outreach for many years; Tim Brown; Julia Myer; Linda Cochran; and backup teachers Tim Bender, Tim Martin, and Bill Hasse.
According to Pamela, the program began the session with about six students, and it has grown by one or two per week. Zeltenreich ESL representatives have been working with ForgeWorks director Allison Cuthie to
Grace Point
Church forms women’s group
Grace Point Church of the Nazarene, 110 Durlach Road, Ephrata, invites women to join an Embrace Grace Group. This program is for single women who are pregnant. The group meets at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays.
Embrace Grace seeks to build a community of women who can provide encouragement and support to each other. Members will receive a free baby shower.
For more information, call 717-733-2000 or email embracegrace@ nazgp.org.
According to Pamela, students who are taking part in classes have shown courage and intelligence in choosing to do so. “Sometimes the language barrier is deemed as being associated with less intelligence,” said Pamela, who noted that English is one of the hardest languages
to learn. “It takes a long time to master (English),” she stated. “We are giving (students) the opportunity in a safe environment to learn targeted skills that are useful for them in their day-to-day lives and that will aid them in being better understood. That’s an important part of what we’re doing.”
Pamela noted that the growth of classes has been
comfortable for the teachers and students. “We are pleased to start slow and grow,” noted Pamela. “We want to serve our students well.”
Readers who are interested in taking part in classes may contact the church by emailing esl@ zeltenreich.org or calling 717-742-0240. Classes are free, but there is a cost for the class workbook. Church from pg 1

Vintage Candy Shop now open in Lancaster
Vintage Candy Shop, which had its original location in the Cabbage Hill neighborhood of Lancaster city, has moved to a much larger downtown spot near the square. The candy shop, which debuted two years ago at 602 St. Joseph St., closed that 600-squarefoot location on Aug. 4, 2023, and moved to a 4,000-square-foot space at 38 W. King St., where it also has a concession window, an ice cream counter and a vending cafe.
The shop reopened in late February, and is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Hours may be extended on weekends as the weather warms and for First Fridays. An official ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the grand opening was scheduled for March 27 at 11 a.m., sponsored by the Lancaster City Alliance.
At the new King Street shop, the Vintage Candy Shop has expanded its selection of more than 500 different kinds of candies, including candy necklaces, wax bottles, jawbreakers, candy buttons, caramels,

Fresh cotton candy is made on-site, and Taffy Lane offers mix-n-match salt water taffy that customers can select and weigh on an antique scale. The shop’s popular Stained Glass Art Cookie Kits will be available in both original sugar cookie and chocolate

A gift of grace
BY ANN MEAD ASHOn a Saturday in July of 2020, Tim Rogers learned online that his brother-inlaw, Justo Smoker, had been arrested for the kidnapping of Linda Stoltzfoos, a young Amish woman abducted in Bird-in-Hand and later murdered.
Tim and his daughter, Megan Shertzer, who was the only other family member at home, were reeling from the shock of the news when the doorbell rang. “My first thought was that I didn’t want to go to the door,” recalled Tim. Waiting on the front step was an Amish neighbor

who had heard the news and brought her family along with flowers and vegetables from her garden. The woman had been the teacher in the Nickel Mines Schoolhouse on the day of that tragedy in 2008. “She said, ‘I want you to know that there’s hope and God will take care of you,’” Tim reported. “We could see the tears in her eyes, and they were in mine too,” he noted, adding, “(That she would be) the person at the door offering what she offered,” recalled Tim. “It was simple, but the gift of presence in that space was really powerful.”
That day was the beginning of a journey that would show the Rogers family the depth of grace to be offered by the family members of Linda Stoltzfoos and the greater community. Those experiences would lead both Tim and Megan to begin journaling - recording events as well as their emotional reactions and the questions the situation forced them to examine. The result of those writings is “Beechdale Road,” a self-published book that represents Tim and Megan’s goal to share with others the hope and mercy they found in the aftermath of a terrible crime. Because Stoltzfoos was an aide to children with special needs in a one-room schoolhouse, part of the proceeds from the sale of “Beechdale Road” will help support Amish special education in Lancaster County.
For Megan, the crime
committed by someone she knew and cared for brought her face-to-face with questions she never anticipated having to answer. “(Justo) was a fun uncle,” she recalled. “One of the biggest things I have wrestled with is what to do when someone has done such a horrific, evil thing when that’s not who you know them to be.” Megan pointed to memories of an uncle she knew to be silly, safe, funny, caring, and supportive. “What do you do with that when we often want to define people as good or bad?” she asked. “What do you do when they’re both?” What Megan learned through the experience is that “we are all both good and bad.” “It’s easy to forget that because then it affects us and it’s about us and not just those bad people out there who do bad things. It was a battle for me to learn (that).”
are going to write a book and this is how we’re going to do it, and it will be done by this time,’” said Megan.
One day Tim told a therapist who was helping the family deal with the situation about the understanding he and his family had received in the wake of the tragedy. “I shared a vignette of a moment that had happened with the Amish community,” recalled Tim. “(The therapist said), ‘That is so powerful; you need to write this down.’” That conversation led to Tim and Megan beginning to put their writings into order. “We thought there was enough that could be helpful to put out to people,” said Tim. “The story for us is the grace of the Amish community and the mercy they offered to us in the middle of such a terrible tragedy. It was such a gift to us,” he said.
After Tim and Megan each discovered that the other was recording events and feelings, they began sharing their writings with each other. They discussed working together on a project in an open-ended manner. “It was never, ‘We

Penn State Extension posts walking program
Penn State Extension will offer the Everybody Walk Across Pennsylvania statewide virtual walking program from Monday, April 1, through Monday, May 27.
The program is aimed at harnessing social support to help people achieve healthy lifestyle goals. Participants may walk individually or with family members, friends, coworkers or their dogs in teams of up to five. Each individual or team member will aim to walk an average of 10 miles a week - or do the equivalent in other forms of exercise - for eight weeks. The program is not competitive and is intended to help participants improve their own physical activity levels.
Participants can walk at a time and place convenient for them, such as a park, neighborhood, or yard. Weekly emails sent to participants will include motivators to keep walking and strategies for eating healthy. Organizers noted that physical activity and healthy eating habits are critical to long-term health. Participation is free, but the deadline for registration is Friday, March 29. More information is available by visiting http:// extension.psu.edu/every body-walk-across-pa or calling 877-345-0691.
