Farmer’s 5K run scheduled
BY ANN MEAD ASHTheNew Holland Farmer’s 5K is nearly two decades old.
“This is the 18th,” said Traci Tempone, Garden Spot High School (GSHS) cross-country team coach.
The run, which has always raised funds for the GSHS cross-country booster club, is known for offering a “flat and fast” course in the area south of New Holland.
The 2023 Farmer’s 5K will be held on Saturday, April 15, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the New Holland Community Memorial Park, in the 400 block of Jackson Street. Registration and packet pickup that day will begin at 7 a.m. Registration will conclude at 8:15 a.m. A free Kids Half-Mile Fun Run for children age 12 and under will be held following the 5K. Each participating child will receive a medal. Parents are encouraged to run with their children.
The 5K route will follow Jackson Street east to Ranck Road, where it will turn right. Participants will turn right again at Airport Road
and again at Windsock Way before picking up Runway Avenue and returning to Airport Road. Runners will once again turn right to follow Kinzer Avenue north, which will take them back to a right on Jackson to the park.
Cash prizes are awarded to the first three overall male and female winners, with the top prize being $100. Course records are 15 minutes, 28 seconds for men, set in 2017 by Zach Miller, and 18:12 for women, set in 2012 by Aimee Taylor. In addition, the top male and female runners in eight age groups will receive awards. Traditionally, glass milk bottles have been given to age group winners.
In the past, the run has attracted about 100 runners and raised about $2,000 for the booster club, and Tempone hopes to see at least that many runners take part in this year’s event. Club representative Philip Watt said that the organization purchases warmup gear for incoming freshmen, but that the funds are also used to provide activities for See Farmer’s 5K pg 10
Finding the path to the future
Career coaching helps GSHS students narrow choices
BY ANN MEAD ASHJohn Robbins, transition coordinator with the Garden Spot High School (GSHS) Career Pathways program, remembers the question that spurred the career coaching program at the school. “About 35% (of GSHS graduates) go to traditional college,” said Robbins. “What are we doing for the rest?”
To answer that question, over the years, the program has expanded.
In the fall of 2021, career coaching for freshman and sophomore students was added when Rosanna

… And Bingo was his name-o:
BY ANN MEAD ASHLori Breece, manager with United
Disabilities Services(UDS) service dogs, remembers the successful bingo event the organization held in 2019. “At that time that was our largest fundraiser to date,” said Breece, who noted that the event garnered funds to help raise the 16 puppies that are trained yearly to become service dogs. The average cost of the first year of training one dog is $3,000.
The UDS bingo fundraiser will return to the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, on Sunday, April 16. Doors will open
at noon, and the first game will start at 1:30 p.m. Tickets, which are necessary to attend, will be discounted through Friday, April 14. Each ticket includes 20 games. Players must be age 18 or older, and tickets are limited. Food and beverage items will be available for purchase.
Breece noted that the UDS fundraiser is a little different from some other bingo events. “We allow people to pick their own prizes, and I think that kind of sets us apart,” she said, noting that the option started years ago. “So if somebody wins and they want that Kate Spade bag, they can get it,” she shared. “That has been well received.”
See UDS pg 2
Breece, administrative assistant Jennifer King, and other staff members, have been gathering prizes for the event, focusing on experiences. Breece described a tasting tour at Allegro Winery that includes cheese, crackers, a souvenir glass, and a free bottle of wine.
“We have a 50-minute traditional massage and lunch in the Oasis at the Spa at The Hotel Hershey,” said Breece. Another prize will be an experience for six at The Brewery of Hershey, which includes a guided tour of production operations and concludes with a tasting of products paired with local cheese, chocolates, and dried fruit. Four tickets to Hershey Gardens will be among the prizes, and organizers are working on putting together an overnight trip to Baltimore with National Aquarium tickets. Breece also hopes to have a Gettysburg excursion to give away, and King noted that Longwood Gardens tickets and sports memorabilia items associated with the 76ers, Flyers, Steel-
ers, and Eagles are being gathered. Door prizes, special games with cash prizes, and other giveaways will be included at the event.
UDS service dogs are perhaps best known for helping individuals with mobility issues or autism. These dogs train for more than two years before they are partnered with an individual for whom they may open and close doors, retrieve objects, and more. Charlie, the black Labrador puppy that posed cooperatively with bingo cards for this article, began his training at 11 weeks. “Normally puppies start our program at 8 weeks,” said Breece, who noted that in spite of starting a little late, the pup is doing well. “(Charlie) has been a shining star,” she stated.
Readers who would like tickets may email karens@udservices.org or call 717-397-1841. Organizations, businesses, and individuals wishing to help sponsor a puppy may email lorig@udservices.org or call 717-715-8753.
Supporting families of children with special needs
BY ANN MEAD ASH“We want to work ourselves out of business,” said Tara Kelley, director of disability ministry with HandiVangelism Ministries International (HVMI). “We want to equip others to be able to do this because we can’t be everywhere.” To that end, HVMI offers a variety of support and training services to churches, educators, and especially families of children and adults with special needs.
Once a month, HVMI gives parents of children with special needs an opportunity to spend time in the company of others who understand through the Parents In Progress (PIP) support group, which meets at the HVMI offices at 600 Chestnut St., Ephrata, every second Monday beginning at 7 p.m. PIP is facilitated by HVMI founder Tim Sheetz, and it is open to parents of children of all ages with a range of disabilities. Sheetz has been working with families since 1973, and he is acutely aware of their needs. “As the child grows older, who will take care of the child?” noted Sheetz. “That is a huge (concern).” He added that the group gives parents a safe space to talk. “The parents understand each other, and they can feel free to say what is going on and feel supported,”
he said.
To help families, educators, and church leaders work with children with ADHD and autism, Kelley presents “The ABCs of Bringing Out the Best in Children With ADHD,” a three-hour seminar that is not strictly focused on children. “It covers anyone with ADHD,” she said. “It’s for people … who need the really practical tips of what to do in daily life to help include children with the challenges associated with ADHD.” She also pointed out that the program may be useful to Sunday school teachers and ministry workers, who may not have training in education. “There are basic teaching techniques that can be helpful to anyone
in an instruction setting,” she said.
Sheetz said that reaching out to faith leaders has long been the mission of HVMI.
“The idea of the ministry was to alert the church to the need,” he said. “The church may not be equipped to handle the needs of a child with a disability.” However, a welcoming faith community is what families who have members with special needs may need most. “I (have) asked, ‘What is the greatest need?’” shared Sheetz, who noted that the answer is “acceptance” by both extended and church families. He pointed out that of the 35 miracles Jesus performed, 26 involved people with disabilities. “As Jesus was doing

these miracles, the disciples were behind him, and they would be getting the churches started,” Sheetz said. “The heart of the Lord to them was, ‘We have people here with great needs. Include them.’”
Dan Steinman of HVMI visits faith communities to represent the ministry and offer to come alongside them in helping to support families with special needs. “We are always looking for the right place to start a group,” he said. “If a church is willing, we can help get it started.”

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.
Martin and Jennifer Netzley joined the team, which already included Alisha Horst, Sherry Sensenig, Hannah Foley, and Career Pathways coordinator Jill Hackman. The addition of Martin and Netzley means that all ninth- and 10thgraders now receive a minimum of two experiences related to their career interest before they become juniors.
At the beginning of each school year, Martin and Netzley give presentations about the program. “Each student fills out a questionnaire with top three career choices,” said Martin. Based on the students’ interests, Martin and Netzley schedule guest speakers, fairs, tours at area businesses and educational institutions, and more.
The co-workers take students on about three tours a week, with visits ranging from the veterinary practice across from GSHS to the Lancaster television station.
“We have been at Channel 8 News for all students interested in sports analysis, broadcasting, weather,” said Martin, who added that the group attended a rehearsal of “Moses” at Sight & Sound Theatre and learned about the many different skills needed backstage. Netzley noted that she has a student who is interested in learning to operate a crane. On a tour she has planned, the business’s representative will discuss education and certification and how to get students to that goal. “We have students interested in civil engineering and architec-

ture, so there’s a tour with a firm willing to talk to them about CAD design, front desk jobs, everything within an architectural/civil engineering firm,” she said.
During the 2022-23 school year, Martin and Netzley organized three career fairs at the school, but next year, they hope to hold four. The first fair was focused on construction and brought an electrician, HVAC professionals, excavators, flooring specialists, and more to the school to meet about 70 students who had expressed interest in those careers. Another fair brought health and wellness professionals to the school to meet about 100 students who had interests in physical therapy, health coaching, physical training, massage, yoga, and more.
Learning what type of training is available in a specific career path is another area Martin and Netzley help students explore. The offerings at the Lancaster County Career & Technology Center and Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology are on the list along with ABC Keystone near Mount Joy, which offers apprenticeship and certification programs.
The goal of the program is for each student to gain a better understanding of where their career might lie.
“The aim is to have students graduate with a better idea of (options) other than just college or work,” said Robbins. “All our career coaches and job trainers are exposing students so they know what the training options are going forward.”

Nearly 2,200 homes, businesses and schools in Berks, Chester and Lancaster counties are now eligible for fiber broadband, high-speed internet provided by Kinetic.
The service was announced during an event held at the Caernarvon Township Municipal Building in Morgantown, which also included a ceremonial ribbon-cutting for fiber broadband. Participants included Pennsylvania Telephone Association president Steven Samara; Lydia Messner, an aide for state Sen. Scott Margin; Kinetic state public affairs vice president Jeanne Shearer; Berks County community and economic development director Pamela Shupp-Menet; Twin Valley School District superintendent Patrick Winters; Kinetic state operations president
Susan Schraibman; and Caernarvon Township supervisor Paul Whiteman Sr.
About 900 customers in Berks County, 750 in Chester County and 550 in Lancaster County are now eligible for fiber. That total of nearly 2,200 customers will likely increase to more than 3,100 by this time next year, Kinetic estimates. Kinetic’s fiber-
optic broadband lets users upload and download at up to 1 gigabit per second, or 1,000 megabits a second, providing what is known as “next-generation access.”
The southeastern Pennsylvania fiber project is part of a $2 billion multiyear capital investment strategy to dramatically expand gigabit internet service across Kinet-
ic’s 18-state footprint. Customers may visit www.gokinetic.com to find out if they are eligible for a speed upgrade and how Kinetic can help meet their home or business needs. They may also visit the Kinetic Connection Center retail store at 130 E. Main St. in Ephrata or call the store at 717-738-7100.

Applications must be received by Friday, March 31.
Through the HARTZ PT Charitable Organization, founded in 2020, HARTZ PT spends an average of 50 volunteer hours and contributes more than $1,000 per employee in support of local charities each year. Bench Mark Program, Off the Streets Lancaster, A Week Away, Aaron’s Acres, Lancaster Science Factory and Hospice of Lancaster are a few of the local charities that have benefited from HARTZ PT’s charitable programs.
Toward spiritual health
BY ANN MEAD ASHVeronica Jimenez, lay counselor, volunteer prison chaplain, and author of the Sound Mind Awareness curriculum, is known for the classes she teaches at churches and recovery houses and for her counseling ministry.
Jimenez’s journey to this place, however, has been hard-won and filled with twist and turns.
Originally from the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn in New York City, Jimenez suffered abuse from an early age. “I learned shame and rage very early,” Jimenez recalled, noting her situation created the “perfect storm for mental illness.” “I wasn’t a healthy kid,” she said. “My heart, soul, mind, and spirit were all affected.”
When Jimenez was a teenager, her anger became such an issue, she was sent to live in a girls’ home for a year. “That’s where I developed a heart for the incarcerated,” she said.
Around age 11, Jimenez remembers attending a Metro World Child Sunday school run by pastor Bill Wilson. “That’s where I first heard that God has a son named Jesus who loves children,” said Jimenez, who noted that at that time the grace of God first touched her life. “I still lived in a bad environment, but I learned to pray,” she said.
When Jimenez met her husband, her life changed.
Christian Women’s Club will gather
The Lancaster Christian Women’s Club will hold a “Life’s Anchor” luncheon on Wednesday, April 5, at noon at Bent Creek Country Club, 620 Bent Creek Drive, Lititz. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m.
Guest speaker Carol LeBeau-Hamilton, a former TV news anchor and reporter, will share “An Anchor for Life.” She will explain how she replaced life on a roller coaster of highs and lows with peace, contentment, and abundant life through faith.
Reba Crill will also deliver a presentation on the life of Helen Baugh, founder of Stonecroft.
Reservations are required by Friday, March 31. There is a cost to attend. For details and reservations, call 717799-0088.
She had been told she could not have children, but she prayed for a miracle because she saw how her husband loved children. “That was the first miracle I ever prayed for and received,” said Jimenez, who eventually had five children.
In 2010, Jimenez and her family moved to Lancaster with the goal of making a fresh start, but Jimenez experienced flashbacks, nightmares, and migraines. Marital problems appeared. Jimenez prayed for God to bring her a friend she could confide in.
“God sent Brenda Green of Freedom Prayer Ministries and In the Light Ministries of Lancaster,” said Jimenez. Green worked in conjunction with a Christian doctor, and Jimenez responded positively to the treatment. “That combination … was so effective, I was healed in 2012,” Jimenez
stated.
Green recognized Jimenez’s gift for teaching. Jimenez began to teach classes, eventually developing Sound Mind Awareness - based on the principles of repentance, renewal, reconnection, and retraining. In 2017, she began volunteering as a prison chaplain and branching into offering coun-

PennDOT seeking public input
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) recently announced several opportunities for Pennsylvanians to participate in the transportation planning process. Every two years, the State Transportation Commission (STC) and PennDOT update Pennsylvania’s 12-Year Program (TYP), and public feedback is a critical part of that process.
The public comment period for the TYP update will continue through Sunday, April 30. During the public comment period, Pennsylvanians can submit feedback by taking the Transportation Survey at https://survey.talkpa transportation.com/#/Survey or emailing comments to RA-PennDOTSTC@pa.gov. Public feedback and survey results will help identify needs and prioritize transportation projects across the state.
PennDOT will also host an online public forum on Wednesday, April 12, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Pennsylvanians can pose transportation-related questions to PennDOT leadership and members of the STC during the public forum.
The Transportation Performance Report is a combined effort among the STC, the State Transportation Advisory Committee, and PennDOT, and it is updated every two years. It is the first step in the state’s transportation program planning process and helps to evaluate the system’s performance and opportunities for progress.
PennDOT will make all reasonable modifications to policies, programs, and documents to ensure that people with disabilities and those with limited English proficiency have an equal opportunity to provide feedback on
