Sharing The Gospel Through Music BY ANN MEAD ASH

lair Leaman, a member of St. Stephen Church, New Holland, is looking forward to the church hosting “The Gospel According to Bach,” and he wants area residents to know about the heart behind the group’s presentation. “They are doing it because Tom (Elliott) has this vision of people hearing the Scripture and the story of the crucifixion and being touched by it and coming to know Christ as their savior,” said Leaman. “That’s his goal.” Trombonist Tom Elliott and his wife, Cheryl, who is a violinist, will present “The Gospel According to Bach” with other professional musicians and a narrator at St. Stephen Church, 249 E. Main St., New Holland, on Friday, April 8, at 7 p.m. The event is free, and registration is not necessary to attend. According to Leaman, Elliott started with J.S. Bach’s “St. Matthew Passion,” and arranged portions as solos for trombone or

Chris Lubkemann’s tiny carvings are something to crow about - a majority of them are roosters or other fowl. But Lubkemann also creates letter openers, tiny brightly colored flowers, and a variety of animals, including a few unusual creatures reminiscent of Dr. Seuss characters. During the winter months, Lubkemann carves in a back room of his Lancaster home, but from April through October, he spends three days a week at the Amish See Chris Lubkemann pg 6

After completing research about the Underground Railroad, Daniel Ness has authored a manuscript titled “By Moonlight to Freedom, Underground.”

Local historian Daniel Ness recently presented a program about the Underground Railroad and how it operated in Berks and Lancaster counties to members of the Senior Connections group during its monthly meeting at Conestoga Mennonite Church. The Underground Railroad, Ness explained, was a network of people who secretly offered shelter to slaves from the South on their way to freedom during the 1800s. Those who participated in the effort were called conductors. Ness, a member of the African

researched the Underground Railroad, which included visiting homes and sites that were reportedly part of the network. His findings can be found in a book, “By Moonlight to Freedom, Underground,” which is currently waiting to be published. “This book is the result of eight years of research,” Ness said. “I have visited 277 places in Lancaster County, been in eight attics, 23 basements and 56 other places (like) barns. (The book) includes (information about) 1,030 people (and has) 880 footnotes, 335 pages and 640 pictures.” See Underground Railroad pg 5

scenario where you are the only person representing your school? “There are some schools at states that have as many as 20 swimmers,” Darin stated. “To have that kind of support, camaraderie and positive energy really invigorates and motivates a swimmer.” “So, for Kayla to go to states and to qualify for finals in two events on the same day is a huge accomplishment,” the coach added. “I know she will be ready and hungry to return next year.”

Suppose they gave a statewide championship for a high school sport, and you were the only one representing your school. Suppose you not only showed up to compete at said sporting event, but also finished among the top 15 competitors. That was what Garden Spot junior Kayla Parry did in the PIAA Class AAA girls’ swimming championships, which took place at Bucknell University on March 15 and 16.

In the 100 fly, her time of 57.85 was an improvement on the prelim time of 58.32 as she took 13th place in the finals. “She was seeded 19th and was able to drop six places to be 13th overall in the finals,” noted the coach. “Kayla’s competitive nature and grit were on full display. She didn’t give up; she went as hard as she could until she reached the wall. I am really impressed with Kayla’s achievements at states.” And again, what about that

Kayla proved herself by improving on her seeding time and shaving time off the preliminaries as well while she swam in the 100-yard butterfly event and the 200-yard individual medley. “She was seeded 17th in the 200 IM and was able to drop .96 seconds in the prelims to be seeded 12th,” explained Garden Spot coach Darin Parry. She had a time of 2:08.11 in the preliminaries and posted the 12th-place time of 2:08.28 in the finals of the event.

Artist David Moore has been studying with the Lancaster Mennonite Conference STEP (Study and Training for Effective Pastoral ministry) Program for nearly three years. “The final project is a missional outreach,” explained Moore, who noted that he struggled to come up with an original missional experience. “A couple months ago, the Lord said, ‘Why not do an art show at Green Dragon?’” Moore decided to hold the show on Good Friday. “The idea is to turn people’s thoughts to Christ with artwork,” he noted. On Friday, April 15, Gather In, a group of Christian artists of which Moore is a member, will hold an exhibition at Green Dragon Farmers Market, 955 N. State St., Ephrata, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Among the artists who take part will be woodworkers, watercolorists, carvers, metalworkers, painters, abstract artists, and cartoonists. Other artists in the group are considering what they will bring. Gary Greene is a landscape painter who paints and teaches watercolor. He and his wife, Pat, are both Gather In members. Rather than bringing his own work, Gary described a page from a newspaper that he clipped long ago and had laminated to display. “(It’s of) Jesus as a little boy

with Joseph working at his carpenter bench,” Gary explained. “Jesus is crawling around on the floor and picks up a spike (like the one that will later secure him to the cross) to play with. It blew me away,” said Gary, who added that Pat will give away rawhide bracelets that tell the salvation story with different colored beads. Gather In member and abstract artist Isabell Clark is organizing a display at Stillmeadow Church of the Nazarene in York. “I have gathered other artists in our church, and we are doing pieces that correspond with our Lenten focus,” said Clark, who noted that the group has created a gallery space within the sanctuary for visitors to engage with the art. She plans to bring a piece from that display to the Green Dragon exhibit. Gather In is overseen by illustrator and biblical artist Sam Mylin of Willow Street, who recalled that the group started as Artist’s Junction in 1999. In 2009, the name was changed to Gather In. Mylin creates illustrated Bible studies with discussion questions for the up to 20 Christian artists who attend meetings. Moore added that sometimes the group meets around a bonfire and cooks hot dogs. Often, Gather In meets at the home of David Nolt, an oil painter who has limited use of his hands and paints primarily holding a

He added that James and Hannah Jackson, who owned three adjacent farms on Furnace Road in Robeson Township, were active conductors in the Underground Railroad. “When dealing with the subject of the Underground Railroad, there is a lot we don’t know because it was very secretive, very hidden,” Ness said. “Most of what we know we have learned from reading people’s diaries, family history stories and reading accounts in the newspapers about people who were arrested or in some cases (killed) for their activity.” “Technically (the slaves) were not free until they reached Canada, but many people in Pennsylvania did all they could to help formerly enslaved people,” he added.

that many ironmasters were participants in the Underground Railroad and offered protection to the workers especially when their “owners” from the South would come to claim them. “Levi and Emily Smith of Joanna Furnace assisted freedom seekers by hiding them in the woodland area near the furnace,” Ness stated. Levi reportedly recruited Henry Segner, a collier at Joanna Furnace, as a guide for the Underground Railroad. “He would assign one of his workers to take black people working there who were in danger of capture and lead them off,” said Ness, “while he himself took the kidnappers or slave catchers (in another direction) in the woods so that they would be lost for several days.”

He displayed photos of homes in New Holland that were reportedly part of the Underground Railroad, including one on Main Street that was home to the Mentzer family. “You see an outside entrance to the basement and in the basement, there is an opening to a tunnel,” Ness said. “Where the tunnel went, we are not sure. It’s likely it went under the street and was an escape route. There is no written evidence that this was an Underground Railroad site. But there is the outside entrance and the tunnel (as evidence).” Ness reported that many former slaves were employed at local furnaces, including Poole Forge in Narvon and Joanna Furnace in Robeson Township, Berks County. Farm and House, 2395 Covered Bridge Drive, Lancaster. Lubkemann - who can carve flowers from a toothpick - is no lightweight in the craft, having authored close to 20 books on the subject, many published by Fox Chapel Publishing in Mount Joy. The child of missionaries, Lubkemann was born in Brazil. His earliest memory of carving was of making dental picks in the jungles of Peru at age 7, but he did not begin to whittle seriously until he was given a summer assignment to help an older pastor in Glendale Springs, N.C., while still in college. “The mountain people ... carved little roosters and pheasants,” said Lubkemann. “The minister ... knew how to carve these things.” Lubkemann quickly got

himself a country store pocketknife and started to learn. “I was tickled because I always enjoyed working with wood,” he said. “My first rooster ended up looking like it got into a fight and lost,” he recalled. “I kept working at it.” Back at college in South Carolina, Lubkemann thought he could help pay his tuition with his carving. “I decided to try to be self- employed by ... carving roosters to sell to students or whoever,” he said. “I was probably the first college student in U.S. history who literally whittled away most of his senior year to pay for it.” After graduating in 1967 with a degree in biblical education, Lubkemann attended graduate school and then got married. He and his wife became missionaries in Portugal in 1972. “My wife is an incredible puppeteer,” said Lubkemann, who built puppet theaters for programs the couple would put on in parks, at marketplaces, and outside churches. The country also offered Lubkemann a unique opportunity to use his carving skills to connect with people. “One of the national symbols of Portugal is the rooster,” he said. “So I taught people how to carve these.” Lubkemann gave classes at the folk-art museum and was spotlighted on television, becoming known as the Rooster Man. In 1987, the couple relocated to Lancaster County, where eventually Lubkemann opened his shop at the Amish Farm and House. He has also done demonstrations at malls, at schools, and for civic clubs. For 25 years, he was a regular feature at the Pennsylvania Farm Show. In his own home, Lubkemann displays roosters he has collected, alongside games he has invented, including his Team Maze, which requires ultimate cooperation between two partners to complete. “I have been carving for 55 years,” said Lubkemann. He shows no signs of putting down his knife anytime soon.
