In the winter of 2020, Fairmount, a retirement community located in Ephrata, hosted its annual Quilting Days event in the Farm Crest Community Room. As had been done for many years, quilting enthusiasts, from beginner to advanced, were invited to take part in producing quilts to be sold at Fairmount’s annual benefit auction and chicken barbecue in September. The three-day quilting event was completed within weeks of the state being shut down by COVID-19 restrictions. See Fairmount pg 4

Rachel Miller, family development specialist with Community Action Partnership (CAP)/CrossNet Ministries, works to implement the Parents As Teachers (PAT) program in ELANCO School District. PAT is an evidencebased program designed to promote optimal early development. Prior to the advent of COVID-19, the program

involved home visits, but for the last several months, PAT has been held virtually. According to Miller, because of high participation in the ELANCO and Cocalico school districts, the two areas were chosen to “hive off” from the county-wide meeting, instead holding their own virtual monthly gatherings. To make that happen, Miller and Alice Irwin of the ELANCO School District have partnered with

English, followed by Barrows reading the same book in Spanish. Next, organizers modeled several ways to engage in an activity, which involved creating hearts. Miller explained that the core resources, but not all the supplies for the activity are provided because a goal of PAT is to use things from around the house and adapt the activity to the child’s age. Following the activity, Miller, as the host, divides participants into virtual breakout rooms so families can take part in discussions with other members of their school district. Miller noted that the time gives parents and children a chance to get to know each other. Each PAT session typically lasts an hour, according to Miller. A 15minute debriefing time for staff and parents who want to remain is held at the end. Parents of prekindergartenage children in ELANCO or Cocalico school districts who wish to participate in the sessions may call 717-299-7388, ext. 3205 or call or text 717538-1720.

Deeann Sherman, who was hired by CAP in 2020 to serve the Cocalico community as part of that school district’s First 10 initiative. The initiative works to connect families and schools during a child’s first 10 years. To take the program a step further, Miller and Sherman have each partnered with their local library. Miller has connected with Carla Castro Barrows, assistant director and youth services librarian, at the ELANCO Library, and Sherman has enlisted Jess King, with the Adamstown Area Library, to help with the monthly PAT virtual sessions. Prior to each themed session, families receive a dropoff bag, which includes the book that will be read along with many of the supplies needed for the planned activity. In keeping with Valentine’s Day, the February session theme was based on loving and caring. “We focused on social and emotional wellness,” said Miller of the program, which was called “In My Heart.” King read the book “My Heart Fills With Happiness” aloud in

New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS) board members Don Horning and Wilbur Horning, along with Preserving New Holland capital campaign organizer Larry Shirk, are excited about the legacy the society will be able to leave to future members. “When you take the weight of a mortgage off the shoulders of an organization, it changes the way you can operate,” said Don. “… and when we turn it over to the next generation, they will get something (special).” “We will give them a solid foundation for the future,” said Shirk. Don noted that over the last year while the museum was closed, the board members had time to talk about the opportunity to purchase the building where the society museum has been located since 2011. The board felt the timing was right to move ahead. The building, commonly known as the Kauffman Building, holds a unique place in Lancaster County history. In December 2019, Lighthouse Vocational Services (LVS) began offering a program called Strengthening Pathways. The program provides a variety of activities that are based on interests of LVS participants. Among the many activities is an art program that includes art lessons in painting and other crafts. Individuals taking part have produced watercolor greeting cards, painted canvases, decorated glassware, candles, and more. The creativity of the Lighthouse participants inspired LVS staff members to schedule a maker’s market to be held in the LVS parking lot, 144 Orlan Road, New Holland, on Saturday, April 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The market will feature items made by Pathways program participants, along with the work of 20 vendors selling jewelry, watercolor paintings, and build-your-own terrarium kits, among other items. Four food trucks will be on-site to offer food for purchase to hungry attendees. In addition to the many handmade items that will be for sale, LVS is introducing its cookbook, which will be sold at a discount online prior to the event. “It will be available for presale (Sunday), April 18, through (Friday, April) 23, online,” explained LVS events coordinator Katie Martin, who added that preordered copies may be picked up at the market, and regularly priced books may be purchased there as well. Cookbooks and other LVS items may be purchased online at www.lighthousevoc.org/shop. Those who would like to help LVS purchase art supplies for the market may visit https://a.co/0zyeUUS. Many of the LVS programs shut down in March 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions. For participants who work in the

community under the Employment Services program, there was no break. Community Participation Services, which includes outings with staff members and volunteer work, is now up and running, and the Pathways program is partially open with both in-person and virtual activities. LVS program specialist Jen Swanson reported that Pathways online classes were back on track within two weeks of the shutdown. “We started on a small scale,” said Swanson, who noted that now more than 25 classes are offered. Swanson shared that more than 25 participants are now taking part in classes that range from cooking to Bible studies. Other classes focus on music, theater, sign language, and School of Croc, which utilizes a program created by Gatorland USA. Individuals who are interested in helping with the classes may email jenswanson@lighthousevoc.org.

While Lititz may seem steeped in tradition, it is also home to a 52,000 square-foot rehearsal space built literally on rock … music. Located just north of town is Rock Lititz, a campus resulting from a partnership between Tait Towers and Clair Brothers Audio Enterprises. A quintessential example of a Lancaster County town, Lititz is surrounded by rolling hills and verdant farmland. While it is possible to enjoy a day visit to Lititz, the town offers a rich heritage and interesting activities that may compel visitors back to see and do more. Discovering Lititz can mean exploring and experiencing new sights, sounds, and tastes without traveling very far from your own backyard.

A packet of essential questions, background information, and follow-up materials accompanies each lesson. Teachers are required to attend a brief preconference visit with the museum educator prior to the first live classroom visit to review the technology and the classroom procedures. The Atlantic League announced recently that it will open its 23rd official championship season on Friday, May 28. League officials will work with team executives on additional details of the 2021 season, including COVID-19related safety protocols. The league is finalizing the admission of new teams, conducting player signings, and working with its Major League Baseball partners on test initiatives for the 2021 campaign. Teachers can now bring the Historic Ephrata Cloister into their classroom with a series of new virtual visits to the museum. The set of interactive lessons, called Obed’s Classroom, is named for Brother Obed, the first teacher in Ephrata, who opened a school in the 1740s. These virtual visits feature four areas of the traditional field trip: the life of early residents, the printing of the “Martyrs’ Mirror,” the Colonial doctor, and the one-room schoolhouse. Each of the four lessons lasts about 30 minutes. Teachers can schedule the four lessons on the same day or divide the visits between days. The lessons in Obed’s Classroom combine live narration, photographs, object show and

Reaching Out To Support Grieving Parents Ministry Looks To Expand Offerings BY ANN MEAD ASH

BASIS, a Christian support group for grieving parents, is currently operating in six locations in Lebanon, Chester, and Lancaster counties and the state of Delaware. The decades-old ministry is part of Handi-Vangelism Ministries International in Ephrata. BASIS stands for Brothers And Sisters In Support, and the ministry provides resources, educational workshops, structured gatherings, and more for bereaved couples and single parents. In July of 2020, Dan Steinman, who is now a BASIS ministry assistant, retired from his job as a maintenance mechanic to become a representative for the ministry. “Never did I picture I would be doing anything like this when I retired,” said Dan. In fact, after Dan and his wife, Phyllis, lost their son, Andy, in an auto accident four years ago, Dan did not initially attend BASIS meetings. But when Phyllis came home from meetings she attended in Akron, Dan had questions for her. “Nobody ever pictures losing a child,” stated Dan. Now, Dan wants to let those who have shared his experience of losing a child know that BASIS is there for them. “Your heart just goes out to people,” said Dan, who added that the loss of

a child can lead to a shift in a parent’s social network. “Everyone is there at the beginning, but the friendship circle changes (in time),” explained Dan, who noted that BASIS brings grieving people together to walk beside each other. When Dan felt God calling him to join the ministry, he trained to become an associate. “(The training) changed the way I looked at things,” he said, noting that he learned about different ways individuals handle grief. Dan acknowledged that because men and women often grieve differently, BASIS has styled the support group atmosphere to be comfortable for all involved. Speaking is not required, but those who wish to are encouraged to share their feelings. The pandemic and consequent mitigation efforts have spurred the ministry to expand its offerings. Citing rising suicide rates and COVID-19 losses, Dan noted, “Families need to connect, and we are looking to branch out to other churches throughout the county.” Dan is meeting with pastors and heads of ministries to find ways to bring the support BASIS offers to new places in Lancaster County and beyond. Currently, two meetings are held monthly in Lancaster County - one in Paradise and the other in Akron. Masking and social distancing measures are used to promote safety during the meetings.
