with the founding of an orphanage, after-school program, and outreach to Gypsies, also known as Roma, living in southern Romania. In 2001, Romanian Christian Outreach Foundation (RCOF) was founded. To help meet the organization’s annual budget, a yearly dinner is held. This year’s event, which will feature a menu including fried chicken, will be held at Yoder’s Banquet Facility, 14 S. Tower Road, New Holland, on Monday, April 29, at 6:15 p.m. Doors will open at 5:45 p.m. The evening will feature the comedy of Gordon Douglas. Douglas, who has previously performed locally, is known for entertainment that is imbued with humility, honesty, and a passion for God. Douglas combines life lessons and even painful events into a program that mixes reality with his love of laughter. Douglas and his wife, Dawn, have five children. Yoder recalled that he first started helping Damien to build a church in the Hunedoara region, which is in the central western area of Romania, in 1991. “It took about three years to build,” said Yoder, who added that the church quickly attracted people from See Romanian Outreach pg 8

“THE ROYAL INCA ROAD”

The Kiwanis Club of New Holland will present a Travel Adventures Cinema Series program on Saturday, April 6, at the Garden Spot High School, 669 E. Main St., New Holland. The doors will open at 6 p.m., and the show will begin at 7 p.m. The program will be “The Royal Inca Road,” produced by Karin Muller and hosted by Sandy Mortimer. The 3,200-mile Inca Road was built more than 500 years ago to link the outposts of the Inca Empire. To purchase tickets, call 717-354-7783. Children will be admitted for free.

John Yoder’s first visit to Romania occurred in 1990. “I was with an evangelist, Steve Wingfield,” recalled Yoder, who traveled along with pastor Alvin Horning of Grace and Truth Church in Morgantown. Yoder had met Wingfield when he was holding meetings in Lancaster County. When Wingfield traveled to Romania to hold meetings on soccer fields, Yoder and Horning went along to help with setup and tear-down. It was there that the men met Mircea Damien, who was ministering to the people of Romania in the first years after the fall of communism in 1989. A friendship between the three men developed, and Yoder and Horning began helping Damien, first by building churches and later

Women Create Comforters For People In Need

Sisters Carmen Weber (left) of New Holland and Krista Petersheim of Geigertown display a comforter they made that was knotted together by members of Neighbors Caring and Sharing, a Christian women’s fellowship group that meets at Conestoga Mennonite Church in Morgantown. The completed comforters will be donated to the Mennonite Central Committee for distribution to those in need.

While people in need around the world receive warmth and a sense of security in the form of comforters made by the Neighbors Caring and Sharing women’s fellowship group, the group hopes that the colorful fabric quilts will also let them know that they are not forgotten. Members of Neighbors Caring and Sharing, which meets weekly at Conestoga Mennonite Church in Morgantown, gathered on March 12 to knot comforters for the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), a Christian relief organization. The women completed the project under the guidance of sisters Krista Petersheim and Carmen Weber, who provided nearly completed comforters consisting of a piece of material See Women s Group pg 6

Several years ago, her son, Justin, had taken part in a musical produced by Ready to raise funds for Cavod Acade- Cavod Academy of the Arts. “I loved seeing the positive changes in his life my of the Arts are (from left) Maria Harvey, Megan Ranck, Gina Dissinger, (from the experience),” said Dissinger, who later began taking dance lessons and Stacy Wessel. potential and build confidence,” she said. On Saturday, April 13, Dissinger will help fund Cavod’s student scholarship program when she opens Lickity Split Down Under, 209 E. Main St., New Holland, for a Spring Vendor Show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. All funds raised by the event will benefit Cavod Academy of the Arts, 665 W. Main St., New Holland. Cavod was founded a number of years ago by Connie Dienner with the vision of raising the standard in godly artistic expression. The organization offers dance, music, gymnastics, acting, and other arts classes with the goal of providing a safe place for students to explore the arts. Dissinger has lined up a number of vendors to fill the rustic underground space for the day. Vendors selling chocolates, flowers, and jewelry will set up displays alongside those selling personal items such as soaps and essential oil sprays. Country crafts, hand-painted signs, laserengraved signs, artwork, and farmhouse décor items will also be on display. Other items that will be offered will include painted beverage glasses, soup mixes for chicken corn noodle and pickle soup, and candles. Dissinger noted that almost all the items that will be available for purchase will have been homemade. A portion of the sales from the Lickity Split restaurant for April 13 will be donated to the Cavod scholarship program as well. Dissinger hopes the sale will raise $500 for Cavod. A special bake sale fundraiser will also be held to help raise money for a Garden Spot High School trip to Spain in 2020. Dissinger’s experiences at Cavod, which gave her the opportunity to dance again after 25 years, have had a marked influence on her life. “I have been doing tap, ballet, and worship,” said Dissinger. “Worship is so much fun. I am inspired. I cry. It’s emotional, and it’s beautiful.” Dissinger mentioned that she had the chance to work with the late Stan Deen when he was director of Cavod Theatre. She had previously worked with Deen when he was the director of Garden Spot Performing Arts. Dienner is thrilled to have Dissinger’s support. “It’s absolutely amazing,” she said. “We are changing the culture of the arts, bringing glory to our Creator, and we can’t do this alone.” Dienner expressed her personal gratitude for the effort on the behalf of Cavod. “(We’re) so thankful for Gina,” she said. “We are a family, and that’s what it’s all about.” Readers who would like to know more about the vendor sale may search for “Spring Vendor Show in Lickity Split Down Under” on Facebook. on top, batting in the middle and more fabric on the back. Members of the Neighbors group then used heavy thread to knot the three layers of fabric together to make the final quilted product. “We use cotton crochet thread, which is easier to thread (through a needle) than yarn,” said Petersheim, noting that during the course of the recent meeting, the women knotted 11 comforters. Additionally, the women added drawstrings to small bags made by Weber, which are filled with various items before being shipped out of the country. “MCC fills them with school supplies, sewing supplies or health supplies,” said Tina Essick, program chairman for the Neighbors group, noting that comforters and

bags will be taken to MCC in Akron for distribution. “They will send (the comforters and kit bags) wherever there is a need.” Essick added that the comforters are used by the recipients to keep warm or as room dividers for refugees who live in tents. They also go to sites of natural disasters both in the United States and worldwide. Weber noted that the tops of the comforters were made with squares of various materials so that no leftover fabric goes to waste. “I keep a small box and every time I receive donated fabric, I place a square in the box. When the box is full, I started piecing (the squares together),” she explained. Weber said that one of the quilts, featuring many squares with all sorts of patterns, was especially designed with children in mind. “It will give them something to look at,” Petersheim said, noting that the comforter includes squares with flowers, birds, teddy bears and more intermingled with solid red and yellow squares. “The yellow (squares) make (the comforter’s appearance) warm, so I spread them out,” she said. on Tuesdays from September through June at Conestoga Mennonite Church. About 25 to 30 women attend the weekly meetings, which run from 9:15 to 11 a.m. Attendees enjoy fellowship, snacks and a guest speaker. Various outings are also scheduled throughout the program year. Child care is provided for infants through kindergarten-age children. While their moms are at the meeting, children enjoy stories, crafts and ageappropriate activities under the supervision of a teacher. Snacks are provided. All programs and child care are offered free of charge. When a craft is the focus of the meeting, a small fee is charged to cover the cost of supplies. Essick noted that there are no membership dues. Women can come as often as they like, as their schedule permits. Conestoga Mennonite Church is located at 2779 Main St. (Route 23), Morgantown. To view a complete schedule of the Neighbors group’s meetings and programs, interested readers may visit www.conestogamennonitechurch .org/neighbors.html. orphans were homeless. “We decided to purchase a house with three acres,” said Yoder, who noted that the land provided room for a garden and an area for children to play. “As (House of Joy orphanage) grew, we needed another place, so we built a second home with single and double rooms,” added Yoder, noting that the 10 children lived in a homelike setting rather than an institutional setting. In addition, RCOF supports an afterschool program that provides a meal, a place to bathe, clothing, a Bible study, and tutoring help for more than 20 children. “(That program) started when teachers from the Romanian schools came to the church and said there were children who didn’t have enough food and asked if the church could provide a meal for them,” explained Yoder. A freewill offering will be accepted at the April 29 event. Yoder hopes to raise up to $40,000 to help the orphanage. Table and other sponsorships are available for the dinner. In addition to building churches, RCOF regularly helps purchase shipments of wood for that area for heating fuel. Church from pg 1 Twin Valley Bible Chapel celebrated its 60th anniversary as a church on March 10. It was originally named Elverson Bible Chapel. Joining in the celebration was the College Chorale from Appalachian Bible College of Mount Hope, W.Va. Under the direction of Jeremy Yowell, the chorale presented a sacred concert during the morning worship service, as well as a few numbers at the banquet that followed at Yoder’s Restaurant. Also present were pastor Rich and Marty Hertzler. Rich was called to be the chapel’s very first pastor in May 1959, following his graduation from Bob Jones University. The first service was held on June 7, 1959, at the Evangelical United Brethren Church building in Elverson, with eight people in attendance. By October 1959, attendance had grown to 61, and the first Sunday school

was established. In 1961, the church joined the IFCA and changed its name to Twin Valley Bible Chapel from Elverson Bible Chapel. In 1967, having outgrown the facilities in Elverson, the church purchased four acres at its present location, 105 Shirktown Road, Narvon, and built its first building. The first service at its new location was held on Aug. 25, 1968. For more information, readers may visit www.twinvalley biblechapel.com. Pictured on front: Twin

Spartans Face Streaks, Blazers in Volleyball by Ara Grigorian

After earning its second win of the season, the boys’ volleyball team suffered consecutive close defeats this week. Garden Spot came away with a 3-1 non-league win against Manheim Township on Monday. However, in a Section Two match at Lancaster Mennonite on Tuesday, the Blazers eked out a 3-2 victory. The same result took place Thursday at Ephrata. Garden Spot had a tremendous fourth set to avoid a defeat at Ephrata. Being down 2-1, the Spartans’ tenacious effort resulted in a 26-24 win, forcing a tiebreaker set. However, the Mountaineers reclaimed momentum and won that fifth set 15-3. Earlier in the match, Ephrata won 25-21 only to have Garden Spot tie things up with a win by the exact same score. It was Ephrata 25-22 in the third set of this close, hotly contested match.

John Sauder came through with 12 kills for the Spartans. Aaron Lapp had seven digs while Davon Martin served up a pair of aces. Dwight Weaver led the team with four blocks. The match at Mennonite had an even closer and intense finish with the Blazers winning the tiebreaker 16-14. They came back from a 2-1 deficit to top the Spartans 25-13 in the fourth set. Garden Spot won the first and third sets by the identical score of 25-22 - the sets being bookends to Mennonite’s 25-21 win in the second set. Yes, a very close match. Davon Martin had 18 assists, Weaver racked up 13 blocks and Garrett Fisher poured in 10 kills. Lapp led Spot in both aces (two) and digs (14). The Township match was a comeback win for the Spartans. The Streaks won the opener 26-24 but couldn’t get much momentum going in the second and third sets with Garden Spot winning them 25-12 and 25-13,

respectively. The Spartans wrapped it up with a 25-18 win, improving to 2-0 at the time. Weaver led Garden Spot with nine kills. Cole Horning and Jordan Martin delivered four digs each while Horning also led the team in blocks with five. Martin led the way in assists with 16. Sauder had three service aces. BASEBALL The Garden Spot baseball team opened the season on March 26 with a combined shutout by starting sophomore Ben Metz, junior reliever Ray Haddon, who went 2.1 innings in middle relief, and senior Ben Spencer, who closed it out for a save. The Spartans defeated Section Three foe Cocalico 1-0 on the road. Metz pitched his way out of trouble for the first 3.2 innings, issuing seven walks while giving up only two base hits. He struck out four batters. Haddon came on and pitched hitless ball in relief, but also gave up four walks while striking out two.

“They both battled the whole time,” head coach Greg Reiff stated. “Ben threw a lot of pitches, but was able to hold things down.” The Eagles were unable to capitalize on all the walks on a chilly afternoon at Denver. It was actually a game scheduled originally at New Holland, but moved to Cocalico’s home field. “Our field was wet, so it was moved to Cocalico,” explained Reiff. As for the missed opportunities by the Eagles, they left an astounding number of runners on base. “They left seventeen runners on base in seven innings,” Reiff said of the Eagles. “Four times they left the bases loaded. “Our pitchers were battling the conditions too,” he added. “It was sunny but it was so cold that by the end you could barely feel your hands.” Nolan Fletcher drove in the only run of the game. Ivan Ruble, who had walked, scored the run. Dylan Crossan went 2-for-3. Sophomore Justin Petersheim stroke a double. Leadoff man Evan Rizzo went 1-for-2. The following day, the Spartans faced another Lancaster-Lebanon League foe, playing at Manheim Central. It was another close game, but with the home team coming out on

top, 3-1. “We had opportunities,” said Reiff. “We had a runner thrown out at the plate on a ball that was hit into the gap for a double. “Manheim Central is probably one of the best teams in the league,” he added. “We had chances throughout the game, but we left seven or eight runners on.” Crossan, who had one of the four Garden Spot base hits, drove in the lone run for the visitors. Connor Plank (1-for-3) scored the run. Ruble and senior Joe Royle both went 1-for-3. “A couple more hits here and there could have changed the momentum,” Reiff said. Crossan allowed only three walks and five hits while striking out five Baron batters in his complete-game effort. “We may need to scratch and claw for runs this year, but our pitching should be there all year,” added the coach. Another solid pitching performance was Petersheim’s complete game on Thursday in a 7-3 loss at Donegal. He went six inning, throwing 88 pitches. Spencer had an RBI double. Petersheim himself had two hits and a walk as the Spartans fell to 1-2.

SOFTBALL It was feast or famine for the Spartans’ softball team in their first two games of the season. They opened with a 10-1 victory over Cocalico at home but suffered a 5-1 loss to Manheim Central the following day.

PENNYSAVER Elizabeth King could have probably told her teammates to lay down their gloves and relax. The senior struck out 17 batters in the complete-game effort against Cocalico. She allowed only four hits. “Elizabeth got her 100th career hit in this game,” King explained. “She is the first, to our knowledge, to reach that in our program. “She went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a triple,” added the coach. “It was

great for her to come in and start the season that way.” King’s battery mate was fellow senior Megan Fisher. She and senior Camryn Focht each collected a base hit as did sophomore shortstop Amelia Mercado, who doubled in a run. “It was Amelia’s first varsity hit and run batted in,” King pointed out. “Both of our middle infielders are sophomores - Amelia at short and Ali King at second base, which she played

TRACK Facing a formidable opponent on Tuesday afternoon, the Spartans lost in both boys’ and girls’ track and field competition to Section Two rival Lampeter-Strasburg. The Pioneers won the boys’ meet at Garden Spot 121-19. Garden Spot’s Adam Horning did run the 1,600-meter event in 5:05.0 to claim first place while in the field events Ethan Good won the high jump with a 5-foot effort. Despite two victories in the field events, the Garden Spot girls lost 126-24. Freshman Bryna Kelly claimed the high jump with a 5-0 leap while sophomore Elyse Mundorff’s 14-1 long jump was good for first place. Garden Spot fell to 0-1 in both the girls’ and boys’ standings. GIRL’S LACROSSE The Spartans came on strong Wednesday evening to post a 14-9 victory at Conrad Weiser. The nonleague victory improved the team’s overall mark to 1-2 (0-1 in league). Garden Spot was coming off a 19-4 defeat to league rival Lampeter-Strasburg in a match at New Holland on Monday. In their victory, the Spartans had to hold off Weiser in the second half after taking a 9-3 lead into the break. One of last year’s leading scorers, Kiersten Ellsworth, poured in eight

goals for Garden Spot. She also dished off two assists. Sophie Torrance netted two more goals as did Olivia Usner, who was also credited with two assists. Mandi Rider and Megan Esh each chipped in with one goal as Spot out-shot Weiser 20-19. Sophomore goalkeeper Lexi Horning scooped up 10 saves to earn the victory. Ellsworth scored all four Garden Spot goals in the loss to L-S. Kelsey Kimmel’s seven-goal performance led all scorers. BOY’S LACROSSE The Spartans held their ground against Lampeter-Strasburg on Monday, but came up short in a 10-4 Section Two boys’ lacrosse match at L-S on Tuesday. The Spartans scored twice in the first quarter and netted two more in the fourth. Gavyn Naranjo scored two for the Spartans while Zeb Fisher and Benton Moyer each posted one goal. Titus Marburger made four saves. Garden Spot fell to 0-2 in the league (0-3 overall) with an 18-6 loss at Ephrata on Thursday. Fisher and Moyer each tallied two goals for the visiting Spartans. Naranjo and Max Mercaod each registered one goal while Fisher and Liam Hamer each recorded an assist.

a little of last year.” Ali King had a hit and a walk in the win. “The girls did well in the Cocalico game,” commented the coach. “We had a few errors against Manheim Central, which was a little rough,” she said. “I’m hoping the rest of the season we pick up and do much better.” King had eight strikeouts and allowed only one walk in the defeat. TENNIS The Spartans opened league play on Wednesday, March 20 with a match at Elizabethtown. The Bears triumphed 70 despite some strong individual efforts by the Spartan crew. Adam Hershey played a solid first singles match against E-town’s Evan Schneider, losing 4-6, 5-7. Returning senior Matt McCormick battled at number two but fell short in a 6-4, 6-3 final. Andrew Bowman suffered a 6-3, 6-1 loss at No. 3 while Sam Tlumach, who teamed up with McCormack at second doubles as well, fell at fourth singles 6-3, 6-2. Manheim Central posted a 7-0 win against Garden Spot in another Section Two match that took place on Tuesday at New Holland. The Spartans fell to 1-2 (0-2 in league). The MC twosome finally prevailed 8-7 (7-4). Connor Murray and Will Culbert were on the short end of an 8-3 final at first doubles. Tlumach and McCormick lost 8-2 at number three. Hershey played a tough second set against Bidelman at No. 1. Bidelman, who had won the first set 6-2, took the second set 6-4. Tlumach’s effort at No. 4 singles went for naught as Silas Eldeen earned that point for the Barons, winning 6-3, 6-2. Not only did they play back-toback games, they also had a Thursday game against league for Donegal, losing 4-0. “It’s rough playing three games in a row, especially to start off the season,” said head coach Kim King. “In your first few games you’re still figuring things out - where to put people and such. So, to play three games in three days is rough.” In the 10-1 win, starting pitcher
