Zooks Homemade Chicken Pies Celebrates Grand Opening! Zook’s Homemade Chicken Pies was founded by Amos and Rachel Zook back in 2001. They sold the business to Lee & Rose Anna King (daughter and son-in-law) in 2007 and it has now moved from Harvest Drive to a new location at 3427 Lincoln Hwy East, Paradise, PA 17562. This building had been known as the National Christmas Center for the last 20 years and originally was a restaurant known as The Dutch Town & Country Inn. Today the renovated building offers ample and much needed space to enable Zook’s Homemade Chicken Pies to keep up with production of their delicious pies that make a great home cooked meal that anyone can appreciate. On April 15, 16 & 17 the public is invited to a Grand Opening celebration of Dutch Town & Country Market, the retail side of Zook’s Homemade Chicken Pies, where you will find not only Zook’s Pies but also Local milk, ice cream, jarred goods, bakery items and other specialty foods. There will be the opportunity to register to win prizes and product samples to taste and enjoy. The retail store hours are 8 am to 5 pm weekdays and Saturdays 8 am to 4 pm.

W hen Tracy Wagner, director of the Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) musical, looked into securing the rights for a spring show that the school would be able to stream, she did not know that her choice of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” would be met with intense student enthusiasm. “This group was jumping out of their skin with excitement,” recalled Wagner, who added that the students know the characters and the melodies and wanted to work on learning the show as soon as the books arrived. “‘The Little Mermaid’ is the story of Ariel, played by Sheridan Riva, a mermaid princess with a beautiful singing voice, who lives in an undersea kingdom. Ariel should be content, but she desires the one thing she cannot have: life on land. When Ariel recues a human prince named Eric, played by Henry Greiner, from a storm at sea and falls in love with him, she is even more determined to realize her dream. She defies her father, King Triton, played by Zac Snyder, and bargains with sea witch Ursula, played by Kati Lyle, who demands Ariel’s voice in exchange for entry into Prince Eric’s world. With help from Flounder, played by Oliver Hughes; Scuttle, played by Caroline Erb; and Sebastian, played by Isabelle Titzer, Ariel works to gain the love of the prince without being able to speak. If they fail, she will lose her soul to Ursula. The show will be presented at the school to a limited audience by invitation. The stream will be available from Sunday, April 18, through Sunday, May 2, at 7 p.m. each evening. Tickets to watch the streamed show may be purchased through

Pickin’ In The Park from pg 1 Cloister To Offer Virtual Field Trips Teachers can now bring the Historic Ephrata Cloister into their classroom with a series of new virtual visits to the museum. The set of interactive lessons, called Obed’s Classroom, is named for Brother Obed, the first teacher in Ephrata, who opened a school in the 1740s. These virtual visits feature four areas of the traditional field trip: the life of early residents, the printing of the “Martyrs’ Mirror,” the Colonial doctor, and the oneroom schoolhouse. Each of the four lessons lasts about 30 minutes. Teachers can schedule the four lessons on the same day or divide the visits between days. The lessons in Obed’s Classroom combine live narration, photographs, object show and tell, and activities for students to do on their side of the

“We wanted to do a steak competition (with) an antiques side for Bill and Linda, (who own Tannery Antiques),” explained Glick, who worked with a steak competition organizer to promote the Keystone Steak Cook-Off, which will include more than 40 professional grilling teams vying for a $1,000 first-place prize. A chicken wing contest will be held as well. A nominal fee is required to enter, and a cash prize will be awarded to the winner. The antique and artisan swap meet, which will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., will include more than 35 vendors. Glick noted that an antiques event called Oddities Bazaar Market will be held in Adamstown in conjunction with Pickin’ in the Park. The Oddities Market will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Renninger’s Antiques Market, 2500 N. Reading Road, Adamstown. “We will have a variety of food,” said Glick of the more than 10 food trucks and vendors lined up to offer food for purchase at Terre Hill Community Park. Among those will be Hen House Grilling, Lickity Split, Auntie Anne’s, and Holy Smoked Meats. In addition, the Garden Spot High School Grassland FFA will sell milkshakes, and LANCO

Spot. The team went into the seventh inning trailing Cocalico 8-7. In the sister act version of Garden Spot softball, Ally King, a senior, hit a double to the fence to score the tying run. Sydni King drove in the gamewinning run with a grounder up the middle. “Amelia had five strikeouts,” King noted. “It was terrible weather to pitch in. She has pitched all three games for us so far and been doing a really good job.” Ally King finished with two doubles. Abby O’Neill had two hits as well - a single and a double. Mercado tripled and singled. “I’m just so proud that they went out and fought hard to the end,” King stated. TENNIS Garden Spot lost to Elizabethtown in a non-league tennis match on Friday, March 26. The Bears claimed a 7-0 win. Cole King and Christian Merk had a close match at number three doubles, losing 8-3. Ani Kulkarni lost 6-2, 6-2 in number four singles. Dylan Esbenshade suffered a 6-1, 6-2 loss at number two singles and Nate Vreeland lost 6-0, 6-2 at third singles. Garden Spot fell to 1-4 on the year. BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL The Spartans have volleyed up three straight wins to start the season. After blanking Schuylkill Valley in a non-league match in the season opener, the Spartans topped Manheim Township 3-0 on Monday, March 29 followed by a 3-1 Section Two victory at Lancaster Mennonite the next evening, improving to 1-0 in league play (3-0 overall). Freshman Gwen Varley scored six times and recorded one assist while sophomore Brielle Moyer finished with a hat trick. Garden Spot’s 19-shot attack also included one goal each by Emily Ferris (2 assists) and Tavita Kauffman. Senior goalkeeper Lexi Horning provided quick reflexes to help secure the win. Moyer, Varley, and Emma Gruber each scored one time for Spot. BOYS’ LACROSSE The Spartans played back-to-back matches in the final week of March, coming up short against LampeterStrasburg and at Conrad Weiser. In the season opener for the Garden Spot softball team on Monday, March 29, the Spartans found themselves trailing Lancaster-Lebanon League rival Donegal 11-1 early on. The Indians scored six times in the first inning and three more runs in the second, taking advantage of some Spartans fielding errors. Going into the fifth inning, head coach Kim King had one request for her batters. “I told them ‘Just get the bat on the ball - make them make the play,” King explained. “I told them that
even though we were down by 10 runs, we need to make something happen.” The Spartans started a one-out rally that plated seven runs. A walk, a bunt single and a succession of line drive singles pushed across the first couple of runs in the seven-run rally. The game ended with Donegal posting a 13-8 victory. But the Spartans came away with a moral victory while freshman Sydni King and firstyear varsity left fielder Lindsay Lapp each got their first varsity hits. The Spartans played three games in as many days, including a walk-off win on Wednesday under a steady drizzle at home. Sandwiched in between was a loss at Manheim Central. “We were supposed to play them on Friday, but their field wasn’t ready,” King explained. Starting pitcher Amelia Mercado drove in all three runs in a 7-3 loss to Central. She struck out four and walked four. “We had one inning that was shaky and that hurt us,” King said. “Of the seven runs I think only four were earned. “I feel a lot of our teams in our league are going to struggle with pitching - not having had last year with COVID,” King stated. “You’re also going to have a lot of inexperienced players. “I tell the girls that as long as we get better with each game, the second time around against each team we’re going to do better,” continued the coach. The offense was led by Mercado and Sydni King, each with three hits. Wednesday’s walk-off win was proof of the steady improvement for

“For many years, people who knew me said I should write a book,” said Tom Grassel, a man who has been referred to as the mayor of Conestoga, a town that has no such official designation. “I was never a writer, and I never liked to write.” One day, following the March 2020 COVID-19 shutdown, that changed. “I started to write, and I wrote it all out by hand,” recalled Tom. Tom’s life, which began on Lime Street in Lancaster in 1939, has had more twists and turns than some mystery novels. Friends who recognized his unique situation encouraged Tom to share his story. The recently published “Through My Eyes - The Memoirs of Thomas D. Grassel” follows Tom’s life from the beginning, noting the many families that took him in as a child, and continuing through his time as a teenage farm hand and through his marriage to Gerry, his wife of 60 years, and his many careers, including farmer, restaurant owner, blacktop paving business owner, and Mennonite minister. Along the way, the Grassels raised a family, dealt with fires and windstorms, and nearly lost their farm. “It’s in the book,” Tom said often during his interview when asked about the particulars of an experience. By the time Tom was 12, he had lived in three different homes. He began working as a farm hand for Chester Landis in the Greenfield area before moving in with the Weaver family in Conestoga at the age
of 15. He finished high school at what was then ManorMillersville High School, graduating at age 17. In the fall of 1958, he met Gerry, who lived in Bird-in-Hand, at the New Holland Farmers Fair. They married in 1961. In 1963, Tom bought a Conestoga farm, borrowing money from two of the women who had cared for him as a child. He and Gerry raised tobacco, cows, chickens, hay, corn, and five children (four girls and a boy). In 1972, Tom was ordained as a Mennonite minister, and for the last several years, he has held a Sunday morning Bible study in his home. Tom is known for his love of trains. At 4 p.m. each day, a toy train on an elevated rail makes a trip around the Grassels’ farmhouse kitchen. In 1999, a one-foot gauge railroad became part of the landscape of the farm. “One of my friends called me and told me he bought a railroad engine,” recalled Tom. The train, which includes a mile of track and a tunnel, became a fixture at a yearly July Fourth celebration held to raise funds for the Conestoga Fire Company. Tom reported that one event attracted 7,000 people and 1,800 rode the train that day. The shelves of the Grassel kitchen are lined with painted carvings of all types and styles,

Cub Scout Pack 93, who is now a fourth-grader at Bucher Elementary School. “We were able to raise more than $4,000, and there were quite a few people there.” Buoyed by the success of the 2020 event, Case, along with his mother, Ali Bucher, and friend Eric McCullough, are organizing this year’s event, to be held at Camp Mack on Sunday, May 16, rain or shine. Area residents who enjoy fishing are invited to take part in the event. The adult open and hero tournament, for those age 16 and older, will be held from 7 to 11 a.m. The adult hero category will include participants who are Purple Heart recipients or Gold Star family members. Lunch will be provided from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The children’s open and hero tournament will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Child hero category members will include children of Purple Heart recipients or members of Gold Star families. This year, only 30 adult and 30 child participants will be registered. The 2020 tournaments attracted 45 participants. Winners were named in categories including biggest fish and largest number of fish caught. Bucher noted that one participant caught a large catfish, but McCullough added that the largest fish caught that day was a bass. According to Bucher, two goals of this year’s tournament are to attract more veterans and to double the amount that was raised last year. “We want to promote the community getting together for this,” she said. “We’d like to see some new people.” Individuals who are interested in registering for the event may visit www.eventbrite.com and search for “2nd Annual Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament benefiting BS3G.” Readers who have questions may call 717-224-5923 or 910-964-8594.
