CrossNet Food And Nutrition Center Rises To The Occasion By Ann Mead Ash
On March 17, shortly after schools closed and a statewide shutdown of nonessential businesses was announced, Amy Marburger, food and nutrition manager with CrossNet Ministries in New Holland, was directing the ministry staff in packing groceries for local families in need. Meredith Dahl, executive director of CrossNet Ministries, and Grant Gehman, new director of youth, were packing soup, while youth center manager Shanice Smith-Starr and Charis Pankratz, director of mentoring and education, were packing rolls. The soup and rolls were special donations from the Miller’s and Shady Maple smorgasbords, which temporarily closed the day before. “We are packing boxes and bags of groceries for families,” said Marburger, who noted that the ministry had seen a See CrossNet pg 4

Hitting The Ground Running
An Opportunity To Share Joy It’s often said that every challenge is an opportunity - an opportunity to grow, to encourage, to be compassionate, to give, to make others smile. Even in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, we at the Pennysaver have noticed countless community members embracing this concept, and we’d love to see more! We’re giving you an opportunity to share your joy by submitting ways you or others are figuratively turning lemons into lemonade. What fun activities have you done with your kids? What made you smile today? What constructive hobbies have you found to help you adjust to recent life changes? What has someone else done - knowingly or unknowingly that has blessed you or encouraged you? Tell your experiences at www.face book.com/townlively. Pictures and videos are welcome! Some stories will be chosen to be highlighted in a future issue of the Pennysaver and on townlively.com.

On March 13, before Gov. Tom Wolf announced that schools would be closed, Dan Stone, Upper School principal at Dayspring Christian Academy (DCA), 120 College Ave., Mountville, talked with the school’s senior students. “I jokingly told them they might have to graduate in July,” said Stone, who noted that the seniors were not happy with his announcement. “I told them it was a joke, (but) I can’t promise it will be May 30 (as planned). That might move a couple weeks.” All joking aside, Stone said that first and foremost, the school has taken a See Dayspring pg 8

Dissinger, owner of Lickity Split, also posted a photo of a large white event tent with clear plastic windows, similar to the type that might be used for a wedding reception, erected behind Garden Spot Fire Rescue (GSFR) at 339 E. Main St., New Holland. The caption read, “This is a tent at GSFR’s parking lot. (It was) set up today. It is not a drive-through testing tent. It’s for the LGH (Lancaster General Hospital) blood drive Tuesday and Wednesday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Blood See New Holland pg 6
Garden Spot Fire Rescue (GSFR) Chief Darryl Keiser gladly rolled up his sleeve to give blood when Lancaster General Hospital (LGH) held a blood drive in the GSFR parking lot on March 24 and 25. Open blood donor slots filled up quickly the evening of March 23, and LGH expected to gain more than 120 pints from the effort.

Marburger explained that weekly Power Packs pickups are scheduled in the same way, but as a walk-up on the front porch of the CrossNet Resource Center at 123 Franklin St. She noted that she is trying to put extra food into the Power Packs bags because the food must extend for more than a weekend when schools are not in session. The Food and Nutrition Center distributes both groceries and Power Packs on Wednesdays each week. Marburger said that the current system of food distribution will remain in place until further notice.
“We will continue until we are told we can go back to normal contact,” she said. With increased need, Marburger noted that donations from the community will be especially appreciated. Items the pantry currently needs include canned fruit, pancake mix, pancake syrup, canned pasta, spaghetti sauce, jelly, canned meats, and boxed potatoes. Nonfood items that the pantry stocks include shampoo, deodorant, laundry detergent, toiletry items, toilet paper, paper towels, and feminine hygiene products. New Holland from pg 1 supplies are running low in Lancaster County. If you are healthy, help your fellow man.” Later that evening, Steve Loewen, owner of New Holland Radio Shack, commented on Dissinger’s post, noting that all the open appointment slots were full. Anita Blizzard, blood donor recruiter with LGH, confirmed that the 64 slots per day that had been available for donors were filled by evening on March 23. Although she noted that there are always some deferrals, she anticipated up to 128 pints of blood would be given over the twoday drive. Blizzard noted that LGH normally receives blood donations at Yoder’s banquet facility every 56 days. “Yoder’s closed (in accordance with the governor’s order), so we couldn’t hold it there,” said Blizzard, who began calling other area venues. On March 19, when she called Becky Hartranft, who handles hall rentals for GSFR, Hartranft explained that the fire company was not allowed to have gatherings in the facility at this time. However, she suggested LGH set up in the GSFR parking lot. At first, Blizzard did not think the parking lot was a viable option. “I said, ‘We need electricity,’” recalled Blizzard. Hartranft answered that one of the GSFR fire trucks has a generator. Blizzard turned to LGH upper management for approval. “They said, ‘Go for it!’” recalled Blizzard, who added that management suggested she set up the blood bank in an event tent. “It’s urgent,” she noted. “We need blood.” The need for blood stems from the number of drives - more than 250 statewide - that have been canceled in recent weeks due to COVID-19 restrictions. To donate, one must have been free of cold, flu, or allergy symptoms for three days prior to giving blood. Those who were not able to take part in the New Holland drive may sign up for an appointment to give at www.lancaster generalhealth.org or call 717-544-0170 and choose option 1.

Food Assistance Resources Posted The Wolf Administration reminds Pennsylvanians of food assistance resources available and what actions it is taking to ensure access to food does not stop in spite of the COVID-19 mitigation efforts. This pandemic has caused many people and families to find that they are suddenly food insecure and require assistance. Pennsylvanians who need help feeding themselves or their family should find and contact their local food bank or pantry through Feeding Pennsylvania at www.feedingpa.org and Hunger-Free Pennsylvania at www.hungerfreepa.org. The Department of Human Services (DHS) will continue to process applications and benefit renewals for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Emergency SNAP applications can be expedited and issued in five days. Pennsylvanians can apply for SNAP online at www.compass.state.pa.us. DHS will continue to process application and renewal benefits, so people should continue to send in paperwork as usual. For anyone currently on SNAP who misses a deadline or who is unable to submit the paperwork or complete an interview or provide verifications for any reason during this emergency, DHS will See Food Assistance pg 8

Dayspring from pg 1 posture of prayer in response to the COVID-19 crisis. “We are praying ‌ for our nation that the virus is short lived. We are praying for leaders on federal and state levels,â€? he said. Following Wolf’s initial announcement, DCA students were off only three days before resuming their studies from home. According to Stone, staff at the school, which pulls students from 11 Lancaster County school districts, as well as eastern York County, had anticipated that March 13 might be the last day of school for a while. “Our elementary school teachers scrambled to put things together for students to take home just in case,â€? recalled Stone, who added that the staff met at the school on March 16 to make plans for a hiatus of up to a month. “We called Monday through Wednesday (March 16 to 18) spring break,â€? said Stone. “Starting March 19, students were doing at-home work.â€? Stone noted that the school, which serves children from kindergarten through 12th grade, was prepared to move forward so quickly because of the educational philosophy that is espoused. “Our mission as a school puts us in a really great position,â€? said Stone, who explained that DCA emphasizes education of children is a partnership between the school and home. “We have a good working relationship with all our families, and parents are involved with their student’s education, so there’s always a lot of communication between home and school,â€? he said. As the staff worked to prepare for students to attend school from home, Stone emphasized balance. “Our primary goal is to utilize technology to facilitate our Principle Approach to education in these unique circumstances,â€? said Stone. The Principle Approach refers to a focus on
consistent and ordered teaching and learning, with the goal of building a student’s Christian character, and biblical reasoning to promote a lifetime of learning and discipleship. In finding a balance, Stone asked teachers to employ the technology the school has been using for more than a decade in new ways. “Our students are accustomed to getting on the computer and following instructions that a teacher has laid out, he said, noting that for a number of years DCA has employed a concept called the flipped classroom, where teachers introduce a concept by video and students work on problems at home before coming to the classroom to complete more problems with individual help from the teacher. Because of this, switching to learning online from home should not be difficult for the students, Stone said. “That’s not a big paradigm shift, he noted. Stone especially praised DCA’s elementary school teachers, who are generally not as accustomed to teaching online. Calling them “rock stars, he noted that they jumped in with both feet and prepared lessons quickly for their students. Stone also lauded Leslie Schmucker, director of the school’s PS139 program for students with special needs, noting that Schmucker had a structured program ready for parents of PS139 students by 9 a.m. on March 14. DCA is well known for its Remember America Speaker Series, which had scheduled former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee to speak in Lancaster on Friday, April 17. DCA marketing director Lisa Becker said that the event has been postponed to Saturday, Oct. 10. Tickets and sponsorships for the Remember America Speaker Series event are available at www.dayspringchristian.com or by calling the school at 717-285-2000.

One week after closing to mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 virus, Veritas Academy has reopened as an online school, with plans to continue fully operating online to serve local families until

the end of this disruption. A few months ago, Veritas hired Bruce Etter as its academic dean. Etter, a national leader in online education, formerly taught at Veritas Academy and then went on to lead two of the largest online classical Christian schools in the country. Etter led the preparation of Veritas’s faculty and staff. Veritas made its decision to close earlier than many other local schools. Administrators, sensing the impending government-mandated closures and taking advantage of the school’s unused snow days, decided to use the week of March 16 to train and prepare faculty to become online educators and announced this to families the morning of March 13. The credit for this critical decision goes to school nurse Hannah Barry and school physician Dr. Susan Mellinger. Still, the move to online education is a big change for Veritas. In order to help all of its families take advantage of this online education, Veritas delivered Chromebooks to any family that indicated a need. These laptops were part of the school’s typing program. Veritas installed the necessary software on each machine so students can access classes and complete their work. As the teachers and students become comfortable with this new way of learning, Veritas is now looking ahead for ways it can serve the greater community by offering classes to students around Lancaster County while schools remain closed. volunteers is life-sustaining and will continue. The orders do not prohibit food banks and their volunteers from offering food services, nor do they prohibit school districts from offering food services to children during the statewide school closure. Schools and school districts may continue to bring in essential employees involved in the preparation and distribution of meals for children. The emergency Feeding Task Force, which consists of state agencies, charitable food networks, food retailers, and other partners and stakeholders, is working to identify available resources and provide food and water to communities in need. This includes ensuring school-age children, older adults, and others experiencing food insecurity are provided with nourishing meals. Businesses that have resources to help feed and shelter Pennsylvanians in need are encouraged to fill out a survey to assist the task force as it looks to direct resources. Any Pennsylvanian who is suddenly in need of food should complete this survey so the task force can better understand where resources should be directed. ensure their SNAP benefit continues. DHS submitted a waiver request to the federal Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) to ensure this continuity in benefits. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has provided resources for Pennsylvanians to access emergency food assistance during COVID-19 mitigation, including locations of food banks and food pantries that are assisting individuals and families during this time. To ensure that food banks and community feeding organizations remain operable with healthy volunteers, the department provided guidance for ways to limit contact while providing their essential services. The Wolf Administration also asks anyone who is healthy and able to consider volunteering with a local food bank or registering for the State Emergency Registry of Volunteers in Pennsylvania, as this time is creating an incredible strain on charitable organizations’ efforts. United Way of Pennsylvania’s 211 website is also compiling a list of organizations that need volunteers or resources so their work can continue. Amidst Wolf’s continued mitigation efforts, including the state-wide closure of non-life-sustaining businesses and the recent stay at home order issued for several Pennsylvania counties, the work being done by food banks and their

Reception Desk Donated By Local Businesses
12 - PENNYSAVER - Garden Spot Edition - April 8, 2020
Giant Supports Hunger Relief Efforts The Giant Company announced recently that it is donating a total of $250,000 to four local hunger relief organizations. The recipients are Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Philabundance, Maryland Food Bank and Meals on Wheels Pennsylvania. These organizations servce people in more than 30 counties within two states as they work through extraordinary circumstances to supply food to hundreds of food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters. During the COVID-19 crisis, the food banks and Meals on Wheels Pennsylvania are building and shipping thousands of prepackaged boxes of healthy shelf stable food, bags of produce, dairy products, and frozen meals for distribution to partner agencies and clients. To
minimize the risk of disease transmission, these organizations have terminated food drives at this time, adding to the financial burden. Each organization will use the funds to help address immediate needs including offsetting operational expenses, securing food and ensuring critical food delivery to those in need throughout local communities, especially seniors and children. Customers looking to join The Giant Company and support hunger relief efforts can choose to round up their purchase at selfcheckout to the nearest dollar, with funds benefiting regional food banks. The Giant Company will continue to look for other ways to provide support to its nonprofit partners during this time.
