Rockin’ to the ‘80s
BY ANN MEAD ASHWhenJosh Martin, director of the Garden Spot Performing Arts (GSPA) spring musical “Rock of Ages - Teen Edition,” chose the show, he knew exactly what he was looking for. “We wanted something fun, high energy, upbeat,” said Martin, who added that the teen edition jukebox musical of 1980s rock ballads has been edited for a family audience and is suitable for people of all ages.

Exploring abandoned places
BY ANN MEAD ASHThere is a lure in places where humans once lived and worked. Those who venture to these abandoned domiciles may wonder about the people who once inhabited the ruins, asking themselves questions about how they lived and why they left. Those explorers often take photos to share with other less-adventurous fellow humans. Matthew Christopher is just such an explorer.
Deen Auditorium at Garden Spot High School (GSHS), 669 E. Main St., New Holland, on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, April 21, 22, and 23. Shows on April 21 and 22 will be at 7:30 p.m., and the show on April 23 will begin at 2:30 p.m.
The show is set in Hollywood at the end of the decade known for big hair and heavy metal. At one of the Sunset Strip’s last well-known clubs, rocker Stacee Jaxx, played by Edward Monroe, is performing for a line of groupies, while aspiring rock star and club employee Drew Boley,
played by Caleb Stefan, is looking for his big break on the stage. Enter Sherrie Christian, played by Erin Hamer, newly arrived from Kansas with her own hopes of becoming famous. “Drew and Sherrie fall in love,” said Martin, who noted that the rock ’n’ roll club where Drew works is threatened by demolition. “They come up with a way to save the club,” said Martin, who called the plot light and humorous with a heartfelt message. “Sometimes your dreams don’t turn out the way you thought, but they can still rock,” he
noted. “That’s pretty true.”
According to Martin, fans of ’80s music will not be disappointed by the selection of tunes included in the show. “The big ones are ‘Sister Christian’ by Night Ranger, along with songs by Styx, Journey, Foreigner, White Snake, and Pat Benatar,” said Martin. “It’s a who’s who (of ’80s rock stars).” Songs include “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” by Benatar, “We Built This City,” by Starship, and “We’re Not Gonna Take It,” by Twisted Sister. The finale is “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey.
According to Christopher, author of “Abandoned America: Dismantling the Dream” and “Abandoned America: The Age of Consequences,” his interest in places that have been left to themselves began as a child, but he only started documenting abandoned sites about a decade ago when he was researching the decline of the state hospital system. Feeling the state hospitals were too important to America’s history to ignore, Christopher sought to preserve their legacy. That mission grew into an effort to chronicle other abandoned places, which has grown to include a website and a podcast, along with his books.
On Thursday, April 20, at 7 p.m., Christopher will come to Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, as part of the New Holland Area Historical Society’s
R094639
(NHAHS) April meeting. Christopher’s presentation will share his journeys through some of America’s “most haunting ruins.”
According to Christopher, his program will include photos of abandoned malls, amusement parks, churches, factories, and homes, and he will share the “stories of how these places were left behind and separate fact from fiction when it comes to their past.”
Christopher’s websitewww.abandonedamerica.usprovides evidence of his efforts to log the histories of a variety of abandoned places both in the U.S. and abroad. They include hotels, prisons, research facilities, neighborhoods, and industrial sites.
“Mostly I find (abandoned places) through research, networking, and dumb luck,” said Christopher, who has

In addition to wanting an upbeat musical, Martin said he chose the show to give the student actors a chance to stretch a bit. “We wanted a challenge for the kids, but an accessible challenge,” he explained, adding that the show has a continuous rock concert feel. Introducing the 35 cast members to the music and the time period has also presented challenges, although Martin pointed out that the students are enjoying the music. “This music is not totally familiar to them,” said Martin, who stated that he is encouraging the teenagers to lean into the rock personas. “There’s a Bon Jovi character, for instance,” he said.
“For a young teen to have the confidence and bravado to carry off that role is a challenge,” Martin added, “(The) ’80s rock music is vocally very demanding - especially for young guys. It’s high and it’s loud, but we’re working on that.”
Additional cast members from GSHS staff are J.D. Stern and Jennifer Harris.
Tickets for the show may be purchased at http://gspa.seat yourself.biz or by calling 717354-1584.
explored well-known places abroad, such as Chernobyl and ruins in Greece, as well as in the U.S.
Christopher has a Master’s degree in Fine Art Photography from Rochester Institute of Technology, and he has taught photography at a college level. He continues to teach the art through workshops, and he has held gallery shows across the country. Christopher has also lectured on abandoned spaces and mental health history, and his work has been seen in dozens of publications and media outlets.
The program is free and open to the public. More information about NHAHS may be found at https://nhhistorical.com or by searching for “New Holland Area Historical Society” on Facebook.

Handi-Camp, a ministry of HandiVangelism Ministries International, is a Christian camping program serving children, teens, and adults with disabilities. The camp is seeking volunteers to fill a variety of roles, including collecting supplies, being a host family to out-of-town staff members, providing a staff meal, or serving as a day camp buddy. Donations to support the camp, which does not charge a fee for campers, are also needed.
Staff members will attend training in early June. Three-day camp programs will begin on Thursday, June 8, and run through Wednesday, July 12.

Spot splilts with Pequea Valley, Manheim Central
BY ARA GIRGORIANThe Spartans split their first two baseball games of the week, defeating Pequea Valley 10-4 at home on Tuesday April 4 and losing 12-3 to Manheim Central the following day in a Lancaster-Lebanon League ballgame.
The Spartans (2-5) came back from an early 2-0 deficit to plate five runs in the home half of the first inning versus Pequea. After the Braves had shaved one run off the Spartans’ lead, the home team rallied for three more in the third inning.
Connor Manning and Caleb Zimmerman combined for five hits with Zimmerman going 3-for-4 with two runs. Both batters drove in three runs.
While Zimmerman and Manning provided timely hits out of the leadoff and number three spots of the lineup, respectively, senior Colin Smith helped turn the lineup over, going 1-for-2 with a run and two RBI’s out of the number eight spot. Fellow senior Gabe Smeltz also drove in a run at the number nine hole.
The Spartans helped themselves by generating runs. Zimmerman
and Madix Bracken each stole a base. Caiden Murphy swiped two bags as did Karson Weaver.
On the mound, sophomore Ryan Speers went 5.1 innings for the win, recording three strikeouts and allowing three walks. When it was time to call for relief, the Spartans went to Brackin, who went 1.2 innings of one-hit scoreless work.
In the 12-3 loss at Octorara, Garden Spot led briefly. The Spartans plated two runs in the top of the second inning for a 2-1 lead. The Braves scored three in the home half
and had two more three-run innings on the day.
Zimmerman and Speers both doubled and drove in one run each for the Spartans.
VOLLEYBALL
The Spartans topped their Section Two rival Mountaineers at Ephrata on Friday, March 31. The Mountaineers attempted to mount a comeback, winning the third set 25-21 to avoid a sweep.
The Spartans (2-0) took the fourth set 25-17, winning the match by a 3-1 margin.
Given the Ephrata comeback bid, it must be noted that the Mountaineers lost a close opening set. They forced the Spartans to pursue the game point with a few extra serves in the 27-25 Spartan victory. Spot went on to take the second set 25-17.
Tanner Laukhuff, who led the team with 12 digs, put down 17 kills. Keegan Redcay served up three aces and distributed 33 assists while also registering three blocks.
TENNIS
Seeking their first win of the season, the Spartans hosted Pequea Valley in a boys’ tennis match on Friday, March 31.
With the Braves claiming the first two doubles matches by 8-0 scores, the twosome of Andrew

Hershey and Jude Kauffman battled their Pequea counterparts in a tough third doubles match that was eventually claimed by the Braves’ Bailey Scott and Joel Peifer 8-4.
The Braves went on to win all four singles matches and took the match by a 7-0 score.
Three days later, the Spartans played host to Cocalico in an L-L League match. The Eagles dominated the Spartans by a 7-0 score.
Spot fell to 0-5 on the year with a 7-0 loss to Manheim Township on April 5 at New Holland.
The Streaks blanked the Spartans in each match except for number three doubles - an 8-2 loss by Kauffman and Hershey.
TRACK
The boys’ track team edged Cocalico 87-63 in a Section Two meet on Monday, April 3 at Garden Spot.
Grabbing the mid- and long-distance races of the 800- and 1,600meter events, Alan Krock gave Garden Spot two first-place finishes.
Junior Gavin Riemers finished ahead of the competition in the 3200 with at time of 11:10.4.
Sean Kelch ran a 54.9 pace to win the 400.
The Spartans dominated the field events as Kaleb Zimmerman won both the shot put and discus throws. Another multiple winner was Aiden Durante. The senior posted a winning long jump of 193 and claimed the triple jump at 38-11.5
In the girls’ meet Garden Spot topped Cocalico 96-53.
Angela Nuse sprinted to victory in the 100- and 200-m races. The 800 went to another Krock as Elise Krock came in first.
Megan Hechler won the high hurdles in 18.0 seconds and the 300-m hurdles at a 51.3 clip.
Magdalene Martin’s javelin heave of 93-5 was tops in the meet. Nuse came back to win the long jump at 15-11.75 while Hechler contributed a first-place high jump, clearing 4-10.
Chloe Grady claimed the triple jump at 31-11.
GIRLS’ LACROSSE
The Garden Spot offense erupted for 19 goals in a Section Two girls’ lacrosse match on Wednesday April 5 at Lancaster Country Day. The Spartans scored 12 times in the first half, doubling up the Cougars 12-6 by intermission.
Gwen Varley paced Garden Spot with her eight goals on the day. Brielle Moyer and Emily Ferris scored five and four goals, respectively.
Rounding out the scoring were Keira Steiner and sophomore Frieda Kauffman with one goal each.
Olivia Scarle’s seven saves and Jaden Miller’s four saves helped the Spartans stave off the Cougars.
Mud sale planned
The 10th annual Schoeneck Fire Company mud sale has been scheduled for Saturday, April 15. The Schoeneck Fire Company is located at 125 N. King St., Denver. The event will begin at 8:30 a.m., with the quilt auction opening at 11 a.m. A variety of auction items are being gathered for the day of the event.
“We have lawn and garden tools, and we have toys and scooters,” said sale organizer David High, adding that outdoor items such as birdhouses and bird feed will also go over the block, along with a shed, plants, bushes, and shrubbery. “We will have tools,” stated High, who noted that manual scooters, two swingsets, and more than 30 themed baskets will be among the items to be auctioned.
The sale is known for including a
variety of patterns and colors of quilts, and High said this year organizers hope to have at least 48, including full- and queen-size quilts. Having a variety of foods available for purchase is a tradition at the mud sale. This year, food items will include homemade doughnuts, which are made on-site, along with soft pretzels and chicken barbecue meals. Sub sandwiches, ham and cheese sandwiches, and pulled pork sandwiches will be offered for sale, and soups will be chicken corn and ham and bean.
The sale will continue until all the items have been sold. Proceeds will benefit the fire company. High noted that the organization is raising funds to purchase another fire truck.

Monday’s home match with Warwick also exhibited a great offensive output. However, the Warriors outscored the Spartans 19-11.
Varley once again scorched the opponent’s net with eight goals. Ferris and Kathryn Pierce scored twice and once, respectively, for Garden Spot.
Garden Spot’s first win of the season - just as the team’s first L-L League win five days over LCD, was in a 10-goal margin of victory. On Friday, March 31, the Spartans dominated Daniel Boone 18-8, scoring a dozen goals before halftime.
Varley was phenomenal on the day, scoring 10 times and distributing two assists as well. Moyer scored five times and recorded one assist, Ferris dished out four assist and scored one goal of her own.
Pierce also registered one goal. Keira Steiner and Eden Nagle each recorded an assist.
Scarle held down the goalie duties, grabbing 11 saves for the win.
BOYS’ LACROSSE
On the wings of an impressive three-game win streak, the boys’ lacrosse team improved its mark to 4-2 (3-1 league). The Spartans were coming off a 12-3 loss back on Thursday, March 30, which may have sparked the great offensive output. They outscored opponents by a collective 32-18 margin, starting with a March 31 home turf victory over Daniel Boone.
Joseph Bernek was the offensive star of the 12-8 victory. He scored half of his team’s goals. In support of Bernek’s six goals, Ayden Naranjo and Ben Keeport each scored twice while Jared Patton and Kane Leaman netted one each.
Cole Leaman came through with eight saves in the Spartans’ goal.
With a strong second half in which they outscored Warwick by a 6-2
count, the Spartans edged the Warriors 7-6 on the road Monday, April 3. Naranjo and the Warriors’ Aiden Minney each notched a hat trick.
Berneck tallied two goals and assisted on another. Patton had an assist and scored a goal of his own. Max Davis also scored while Logan Lessley and Kane Leaman both provided assists,
The winning continued as the Spartans downed Lancaster Country Day 13-4 on April 5. The match was already an 11-0 runaway for the Spartans by halftime.
Bernek rose to the occasion once again, scoring seven times. Naranjo, Lessley, Patton, Keeport, Nick Gleason and Kane Leaman scored once. Lessley also provided two assists.
Cole Leman saved six shots in the win. Logan Hall was also credited with a save

For three days in March, more than 200 middle school students got a firsthand look at careers in the construction industry at ABC Keystone’s Construction Wars. The students had the opportunity for hands-on work with industry professionals in the carpentry, masonry, sheet metal fabrication, electrical, plumbing and HVAC trades.
Represented schools in Lancaster and York counties included Garden Spot Middle School in Eastern Lancaster County School District; Gerald G. Huesken Middle School in Conestoga Valley School District; Manor Middle School in the Penn Manor School District; Warwick Middle School; Eastern York Middle School; Elizabethtown Area Middle School; Donegal Junior High School; The Janus School in Mount Joy; and La Academia Partnership Charter School. Construction Wars was held at ABC Keystone’s headquarters, 135 Shellyland Road, Manheim.
and a wooden bench. Additionally, they wired lightbulbs and created a circuit, laid brick, were introduced to basic safety and CPR and learned about refrigeration.
Now is the time for students to consider careers in construction, Larkin said, noting that the demand for trade skills grows annually. Average wages for some trades are $70,000 per
year, and apprentices participate in earn-while-you-learn programs, allowing them to access educational opportunities while working, with the potential to graduate debt free. She also emphasized that the industry provides multiple education and career pathways, ranging from apprenticeship to journey-level worker to business owner.
ABC Keystone has held the
(Blue Ball/East Earl Area)
event for more than five years, and Larkin remarked that it requires support from the community to pull it off. “The event is only possible because we have 30 to 35 volunteers each day and very generous member sponsors who provide hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, T-shirts, construction materials and lunches, along with items for goodie bags,” she said.

Exhibit to explore book creation process
Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) has announced the “Inside the Cover” exhibit, which offers a behindthe-scenes look at different ways to create a children’s book. This exhibition will be on display at the Garden Spot Village Main Street Art Gallery, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, through Sunday, April 30. The exhibit features work by Amber Kane, Bill Dussinger, and Matt Novak, with each of these artists and authors showcasing the collaborative nature of creating a children’s book and the various methods that can be used to illustrate a story.
The Center for Creative Exploration at PCA&D will partner with the Eastern Lancaster County Library to host a book reading and activity with author and artist Kane on Wednesday, April 26, from 7 to 8 p.m. The event is for children in grades one through six. Kane will read her book “The Weaving Book,” which introduces readers to how artists work using their creativity along with the basic techniques that every weaver uses. Program attendees will also learn to create a paper loom and explore how different types of lines and colors affect their patterns. This event is free to attend, and no registration is required. More information can be found by visiting https://elancolibrary.org/ and clicking on Calendar.
Dussinger is a graphic designer, illustrator, and educator who has been in the design and illustration business for over 40 years and has been an educator for the past 11 years at PCA&D in the Illustration and Graphic Design departments. The first children’s book that he illustrated, “The Land of Can,” led to the creation of a company that has published numerous books.
Kane spent eight years teaching ninth- through 12th-grade art classes in the public school system. She left art education to focus on her own business in weaving and fibers but quickly found herself teaching online. In addition, she is the director of product management for The Art of Education University, and she also creates books with her brother, fellow educator Ashley Sollenberger.
Novak, an internationally recognized children’s book author, has been writing and illustrating picture books for over 30 years. Among his many titles are “The Everything Machine,” “No Zombies Allowed,” and “Twelve Snails to One Lizard,” which was featured on “Reading Rainbow.” His books have garnered many awards, including School Library Journal’s Best Book of the Year for “Mouse TV” and the International Reading Association’s Children’s Choice Award for “Newt.” He has also worked for The Walt Disney Studios.
The Center for Creative Exploration at PCA&D offers creative experiences for adults, high school students, and children in grades one through nine. For more information, visit www.pcad.edu/cce.

Parkinson’s Community Walk set
HARTZ Physical Therapy, in partnership with CrushPD Fitness and the Red Rose Parkinson’s Lecture Series and Support Group, will celebrate Parkinson’s Awareness Month, April, with a Parkinson’s Community Walk on Saturday, April 29, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Manheim Township Community Park, Petersburg Road, Lancaster. In addition to the walk, the event will include resources and information from vendors along with games and other activities.
The Red Rose Parkinson’s Lecture Series and Support Group, founded in April 2022 by HARTZ Physical Therapy and CrushPD Fitness, meets on the first Wednesday of every month and features speakers from nutritionists and speech language pathologists to holistic therapists and representatives of Parkinson’s foundations. The meetings have grown consistently and are open to people with Parkinson’s, along with their caregivers, family members, and friends.
Greta Myers, a neurological physical therapist at HARTZ Physical Therapy, was instrumental in putting together this group. In addition to her growing list of Parkinson’s patients, she treats people with multiple sclerosis and is a Certified Stroke Rehabilitation Specialist. Myers is active in the community and speaks at various events on the importance of physical therapy and the circle of care that is needed for those with Parkinson’s disease.
There is a fee to participate in the walk, and all walkers who register by Friday, April 14, will receive a free T-shirt. To register, visit www.hartzpt .com/community/parkinsons -walk/.
