Staving Off Cabin Fever
Feeding Terre Hill By Ann Mead Ash
Prior to the food distribution set for March 19, Dixie Adams, one of the food bank team leaders of the Northeastern Lancaster County Food Bank, which is located at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church (UMC), 105 W. Main St., Terre Hill, called area families that receive food from the bank. “We let them know that things (would be) different,” said Adams, who noted she is never quite sure how many families will need food each month. When families arrived at the food bank on March 19, Adams had also posted a sign explaining that no one could enter the food bank except volunteers. “(The sign) said to let (us know when you) were here, and we will bring the groceries to you,” explained Adams. Using two carts, volunteers loaded
up prepackaged groceries. A volunteer pushed each cart out to the recipient. “When the cart came back, it was wiped down,” said Adams, who noted that all volunteers washed their hands thoroughly and then wore gloves throughout the process. Adams made sure that produce and baked goods were available outside the food bank for clients. “I pulled my car around the back and opened my trunk,” said Adams. “I put all the produce in my trunk in containers with bags, and we have a shelving unit that is lightweight that I put the pastries on, so the families could come and help themselves to what they needed when they came to the food bank.” Adams said that she and a few other volunteers had packed the groceries the night before based on the numbers from the February food distribution, See Terre Hill pg 7

New Takes On Education
“Our mission must go on,” said Stacie Blake, chief executive officer of the YWCA Lancaster. “We are excited to provide a positive opportunity for our community to persevere and unite together virtually to take a stand against racism.” As a virtual race, the event technically began on March 25 at midnight and will run through Saturday, April 25, at 11:59 p.m. Those wishing to take part in the event are asked to run or walk 3.1 miles on a treadmill, trail, track, or road anytime before 11:59 p.m. on April 25. Those who complete the event will earn a commemorative T-shirt and reusable water bottle. The Kids’ Fun Run, for children age 12 and See Race Against Racism pg 3
In response to COVID-19 restrictions, runners who choose to participate in the Race Against Racism sponsored by the YWCA Lancaster may do so virtually. Participants may complete the 5K distance at any time until 11:59 p.m. on April 25.
Schools around the county have adjusted their educational methods as part of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and many students, such as those from Mount Calvary Christian School, are doing their learning from home.

You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who hasn’t felt the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and one of the areas experiencing a massive adjustment is the education system. Public school, private school, student, teacher, parent - no one is exempt from the far-reaching repercussions after a statewide mandate closed schools in mid-March. School administrative teams across Lancaster County have had to adjust quickly, all while keeping the safety of students and the community at the forefront of their decisions. School districts countywide have ramped up their online communication portals, offering educational resources, food assistance information, answers to frequently asked questions, and critical See Education pg 2
Race Against Racism Goes Virtual The Race Against Racism, a fundraiser of the YWCA Lancaster that is believed to be the longestrunning consecutive race against racism in the country, announced on March 20 that the event will transition to a virtual race for 2020. The change is in alignment with guidelines from CDC health and government officials outlined to deal with the COVID-19 crisis and to prioritize the health and safety of runners and others.

Since Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf ordered a statewide shutdown on March 16, those who found themselves at home - with or without children may be struggling to fill the hours in quarantine. Mary Bauer, founder of Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue, based in Chester County, has not hesitated to see the value in the hours. “Take advantage of the quarantine and get some fresh air and exercise with your dog,” said Bauer, who recommended throwing a ball or flying disc or working on basic training techniques. Those without pets to play with also have a variety of options for staving off cabin fever. updates. While the game plan moving forward varies by educational institution, concern for the welfare of students presides across the board. For Mount Calvary Christian School (MCCS), a private institution in Elizabethtown, a brick-and-mortar shutdown has caused education to morph into a completely different format. However, it hasn’t changed the school’s mission to “Pursue Christ and Prepare Students,” which the administration and faculty are committed to fulfilling. Guided by an administrative team, the MCCS faculty members have spent countless hours transitioning their traditional classroom format into an online delivery. The new initiative rolled out effective March 23, allowing the entire student body to continue coursework online. “We feel it is important to challenge our students to keep moving academically,” explained MCCS superintendent Dr. Daniel Sheard. “We look at this as a new way to build student-teacher relationships.” Though the plan of action would be re-evaluated in the event the school closure mandate is lifted, MCCS faculty members are prepared to complete the duration of the year via the new remote delivery if necessary. Lancaster County Christian School (LCCS) also went live with its online format on March 23, providing assigned coursework for students in kindergarten through 12th grade in five core courses along with optional enrichment activities. The LCCS executive team shared its intent in a press release, stating, “LCCS is committed to providing a high-quality academic experience even during this time of crisis.” The statement went on to explain, “The school day is set up to be
asynchronistic so that students can learn and study at their own pace in a schedule that meets the needs of their families.” The school utilizes an online hub called Community Corner to provide a central location for communication and interaction. Hempfield School District also geared up to deliver online learning, with March 30 as its launch date. By implementing programs that were already in place within its system, the district hoped to expedite the process while expanding its format to incorporate a broader range of online options. “At Hempfield we have an application called Schoology, which allows teachers to post updates, assignments, discussions, videos, assessments, and more,” explained secondary teacher Ryan Martin, noting that the district planned to transition to using the application virtually. “I believe strongly in the power of relationships in the school setting. I’m hopeful we will also be able to use a video conferencing program so that I can interact with my students in a live setting.” Conestoga Valley (CV) schools also enacted measures to move toward online delivery, directing faculty to connect with families via applications such as Zoom, a virtual conferencing application, and establishing office hours to keep communication flowing. Addressing parents and students via the school’s website, CV superintendent Dr. David Zuilkoski stated, “I’ve always believed that a successful educational experience must include the schools, the family, and the community. I can say without question that CV should be proud of the way that all three parts have come together in this time of crisis.” “Neither our teachers nor our students
signed up for this type of learning, so we will maintain our growth mindset and appreciate a ‘yet’ mentality,” Zuilkoski continued. “Throughout this process, all teachers will be providing feedback to ensure a more personalized learning (experience) occurs.” In a show of solidarity, many communities have banded together to partner with schools and churches to provide pickup locations for bagged lunches for students. Local libraries have kickstarted operations that include sanitizing methods and drive-through services for books and resources. Countless organizations with online platforms are also stepping up to do their part, providing tutorials, virtual museum and zoo tours, and other educational resources free of charge. For parents, this new time of social distancing outside the home creates a uniquely opposite effect inside the home, as they must mesh the logistics of multiple adults working from home, siblings having extensive time to interact only with each other, and numerous demands for in-home technology. Three of Bethany Eaby’s four children attend school in the Manheim Township School District. With the closure of schools in March, suddenly her fifth-grade, thirdgrade, and kindergarten students joined her and their youngest sibling at home. Tapping into her elementary education background, Eaby has implemented online learning initiatives and incorporated some of her own teaching strategies to keep her children engaged and productive. “I’m trying to be really creative with activities for the kids to do together and also trying to keep our days scheduled so that they know what to expect,” elaborated Eaby, whose husband had also joined the picture by working from home. “We’ve made newspapers, art projects,

and sewing, baking, and science experiments. Manheim Township has sent out resources for parents to engage in, which are not mandatory but extremely helpful,” she added. Another creative outlet for communication has gathered momentum, as students nationwide have taken their artistic skills outside to “Chalk the Walk.” The initiative includes covering sidewalks with uplifting messages and artwork to encourage those who pass by. Citizens have also rallied in an effort to minimize the physical distance and connect generations by organizing art and card collections that comply with sanitation protocols. The finished products are then delivered to senior communities that are currently unable to receive visitors. After the initial shock of school closures and social restrictions reverberated through local communities, the ripple effect of postponed sports programs, school trips, concerts, and other events has been felt far and wide. These aftershocks may not be over yet, which is why schools are taking every effort to support their students, families, and communities as needs arise. “Educators, students, coaches, and families are all grieving missed opportunities,” explained Erica Hershock, who holds a Master of Education and has 15 years of experience in school counseling. “Leaders have quickly surveyed the current situation; staff are working around the clock to put flexible action plans in place. They are actively researching and implementing creative and equitable ways to connect and instruct all students.” For those in education, the objectives haven’t changed even if the methodology has undergone drastic adjustments. Community members can be assured that those at the heart of education are as committed as ever to finding the best possible solutions in this uncharted territory.

“Race Against Racism” on Facebook and @RARLancaster on Instagram. People should utilize the hashtags #RARLancaster and #VirtualRace. “We can’t wait to see your creative videos and photos of how you are running your race,” said Blake. The YWCA is planning to hold a community celebration on a date that has not been determined. Participants in the virtual race will be able to pick up their race swag at that event. Funds raised by the event are used to address racism issues, through efforts such as the YWCA Lancaster’s Social Justice and Advocacy programs, as well as supporting those who seek peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. Blake said that she is grateful to the Lancaster community for rallying around the event. “We thank our generous sponsors and supporters for standing with us during this unprecedented time,” she noted. The Lancaster YWCA has been a fixture in Lancaster since 1889. The organization provides services to help empower women, and it is also dedicated to eliminating racism and promoting peace, justice, and freedom. Adults and children who wish to participate are asked to register at https://ywcalancaster.org/race againstracism/ and download a virtual race bib. Those who had already registered for the race will be automatically transitioned to the virtual race. There is a discount for those age 14 and under who run, and the fee for the Kids’ Fun Run is nominal. The race encourages team participation, and there is a special link at the site for virtual race registration for team captains. The site suggests those wishing to form teams invite employees, friends, and family. Awards will be given out to the largest teams representing a number of categories, including place of worship and large and small businesses. Normally, the race, which traditionally begins in Musser Park, includes the annual Humanity Fest, a multicultural festival designed to celebrate the diversity of the local community. Since Humanity Fest cannot be held this year, organizers hope that virtual racers will encourage each other by posting photos and videos experiences on social media. They may search for

“Abstract Spectrum,” 16-yearold Joseph James Roach’s first solo show, has been rescheduled. Originally set to open with a First Friday reception on April 3, the exhibit will now be unveiled at a reception on Friday, Aug. 7, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Mulberry Art Studios, 21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster. The exhibit will continue throughout August. It was originally scheduled for April as April is Autism Awareness Month. Joseph, who has autism, struggled at school, trying to find his niche. In eighth grade, his art teacher Julia Hibshman at Manheim Central Middle School gave him greater freedom to express himself in art. What were at first simply scribbles soon developed into intricate and eye-catching abstract art pieces with the encouragement of Hibshman. The Giant Company recently announced several updates as part of its efforts to continue meeting the needs of its customers and communities during the COVID-19 pandemic, including modified hours intended to help care for older members of the community. In order to allow more time for team members to sanitize, unload deliveries, stock shelves, and better serve customers throughout the day, all store hours were adjusted to 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. beginning on March 19 until further notice. Effective March 19, all Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores are open from 6 to 7 a.m. to customers who are age 60 and older only. This age group is especially vulnerable to the COVID-19 virus, according to the CDC. The schedule change will allow customers in this age category to shop in a less crowded environment, which enables social distancing. They will also shop prior to any other
customers entering. Although team members will not request ID for entry, the company asks its customers to respect the purpose of the early opening. Beginning immediately, Giant is placing a limit of two items on key categories throughout the store, including paper goods and disinfectant products. Effective March 25, all in-store pharmacies will open at 6 a.m. every Wednesday until further notice to accommodate older and immunocompromised members of the community. This change aligns with the modified store hours of 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. daily announced to service customers who are age 60 and older and for those who are immunocompromised. For the hours of the pharmacy at local stores, readers may visit the Giant or Martin’s websites. Senior customers can now pick up their prescriptions using the Giant Direct or Martin’s Direct parking spaces at their local store. The prescriptions will need to be paid for (by credit card) in
advance by calling the pharmacy. Once the customer arrives at the store, they call the pharmacy regarding their prescription pickup. A pharmacy team member will then deliver the prescriptions to the customer’s vehicle, verifying the customer’s information while having them sign in order to receive. For senior customers who do not wish to come into the store, The Giant Company is now offering UPS mailing of prescriptions. The prescriptions will need to be paid for (by credit card) in advance by calling the local Giant or Martin’s pharmacy. The prescription will arrive in two business days and there will be no
shipping charge at this time. The Giant Company continues to offer delivery and pickup through Giant Direct and Martin’s Direct. Available slots are limited, and the company is working to expand capacity. Currently, only contactless deliveries are available to all customers in all areas until further notice. Contactless delivery means that the driver will practice social distancing during the delivery process. For more information on the Giant Company’s efforts in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, readers may visit https://giantfoodstores.com or https://martinsfoods.com.

Terre Hill from pg 1 when they had fed nearly 30 families. “We prepackaged small-, medium-, and large-size grocery packages, which is based on the size of the family,” said Adams, who noted a small package feeds one or two people, a medium package is for three to five, and a large is for families of six or more. Adams and the other volunteers made up 27 packages ahead of time and distributed food to 28 individuals and families at the March 19 event. The Blue Ball Area Lioness Club helped support the March 19 distribution by providing necessary food items. “One of the (Lionesses) noticed we were low on produce, and (the club) bought produce for us, and they also bought frozen meat because we were getting low,” said Adams, who added that the Lionesses brought the food to the parking lot, where they put it in the back of Adams’ open station wagon. “They replenished our stock, but they didn’t come into the food bank,” said Adams. Because the churches, which normally supply the food bank, have not been meeting, Adams noted that there is a need for specific items. Individuals may drop off the following nonperishable items: assorted soups, including ramen noodles, egg noodles, and other pastas; side-dish packets with pasta or rice; Hamburger Helper; pancake mix (complete) and syrup; canned beans, including baked beans; canned veggies, such as string beans, peas, corn, carrots, and mixed vegetables; canned fruit, such as mandarin oranges, pears, peaches, and mixed fruit; single-serve packs of applesauce; juice packs; canned chicken; canned tuna packed in water; jelly; peanut butter; ketchup; and mustard. Household supplies such as laundry detergent, dish detergent, cleaning supplies, toilet paper, and paper towels will also be accepted. “We give laundry detergent, paper towels, and toilet paper (to each family),” said Adams. The Northeastern Lancaster County Food Bank, which is “typically open the third Thursday of each month, will be open on Thursday, April 16, from 1 to 6 p.m. For more information, including how to make a monetary donation, readers may call 717-445-5698.

Humankind and the kindHuman Foundation are making bottled water available for free to those who live within 50 miles of the headquarters in Manheim and who are unable to purchase it at a grocery store. Those in need may order water at www.behumankind.com and use the discount code “HKFreeWater.” Customers who can afford to purchase Humankind water are welcome to order it using the discount code “madeforthis” to take 15% off the cost. The foundation has $5,000 available to provide households with clean drinking water, and it is accepting donations to make more water available. To ensure that everyone who needs water receives it, the code “HKFreeWater” is valid on only one case or 24 bottles - equivalent to just over 3 gallons - of spring water for each household. Allyssa Griest, Denver, was one of dozens of students at Cedar Crest College, Allentown, who recently traveled to London, as part of the Carmen Twillie Ambar Sophomore Expedition. In this study-abroad program in the spring semester of the sophomore year, students travel to an international destination where they participate in a number of service activities.
Why not see what groceries or medicines can be picked up for them and left on their step or porch? Or consider purchasing a few extra nonperishables for the local food pantry during a regular shopping trip. Contact the organization that runs the pantry to find out what it needs and the best times and methods to drop off items. There are opportunities to show children the value of community-mindedness, not wasting food or other goods or resources, healthy habits like hand-washing, and planning rather than panicking. And, of course, with many regular activities on hiatus, spend the time learning new things and making memories.

Another way to get ready for those days of summer is to pull out the lawn furniture or prepare the flower and vegetable beds. Go to the grill for a dinner that is different from the usual. Maybe delve into the freezer for some items that need to be used and exercise a little creativity by holding an impromptu barbecue. Of course, venturing out to get food and other items, such as medications, is a necessity. But an “every family for itself” attitude need not prevail either. Going out in public means practicing social distancing for the health and safety of all, but it can also be an opportunity to serve the community. Have an elderly neighbor who is safer at home?

parks, and the family does a virtual tour of each one as they put it together. Assembling the puzzle begins with a math assignment that measures the work surface to be sure there is room for the project. With libraries closed, many families with children may be missing educational weekly activities. Some libraries are offering story times online. Heather Smith, director of the ELANCO Library in New Holland, said that the organization is encouraging families to check out its online resources at www.elancolibrary.org. “Libby and OverDrive are apps that you can use to download e-books and e-audiobooks for free with your library card,” said Smith. “Books are available for (children), teens, and adults. For the preschoolers, (parents) can read along with Tumblebooks and BookFlix.” Carol Wenger, youth and children’s librarian at Pequea Valley Public Library, added that anyone with an active Lancaster County library card may visit www.pvpl.org and click on eResources to find a multitude of great websites including Heritage, Automotive Repair, and Brainfuse. Also, now that there is time, maybe get to those activities that have been at the bottom of the “to-do” list for what seems like forever. Clean out the basement, the attic, or the garage. Live in an apartment? Clean out the cupboards or closets. Sanitize countertops and other areas in kitchens and bathrooms regularly. Or maybe go through the closet and prepare for warmer weather by weeding out the clothing items that were not worn last year and are ready to be donated.

classes and other educational resources. Podcasts in an area of interest can help make the hours move more quickly, and online puzzles and games can also help keep the brain engaged. The situation is ideal for families to spend time creating quality experiences and memories. Break out the board games or the playing cards or just engage in an old-fashioned game of charades. Getting outside is also a great option. Yard games such as croquet or badminton are good choices when the weather is fine. A piece of chalk can create a hopscotch game in seconds, and a length of rope can provide hours of jumping activity. Maintaining social distance is easier in the great outdoors, so walking, running, and bicycling are all ways for members of a family to stay active while spending time together in the fresh air. In addition, those with schoolage children may want to consider structuring days to keep a routine in place. Having meals, snacks, assignments, play, and other activities at approximately consistent times creates a sense of stability. Look for activities that encourage creativity. Remember the excitement of the possibilities that lie in repurposing an old shoebox? Children can feel that same sense of potential and utilize their imaginations with simple household items such as cardboard, crayons, cotton balls, and glue. Mandy Leggett, a homeschooling Conestoga-area mother and president of the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce, suggested using puzzles to teach about places. Her 10-year-old son completes puzzles of pictures from national

Prima AtHome Content Available Like many other entities, theaters across the country, including Prima, have had to temporarily close their doors in an effort to protect patrons and team members. In the midst of Prima’s event postponements, its under-stage basement flooded, rendering significant losses under 15 inches of water. In order to engage and support the community, Prima has launched Prima AtHome, offering video streaming content from both past productions and new living room concerts. Readers may visit www.prima lancaster.org/athome to peruse streaming concerts and theater productions. Prima AtHome plans to release material every four days throughout April. An entire month of AtHome is free with a minimum set donation. These funds will provide resources to local out-of-work theater artists and ensure Prima is able to create programming in the future.

Sheetz recently announced a new SHcan and Go! feature allowing customers to scan and pay for convenience items through the Sheetz app. Now available at all 600 Sheetz locations, this new feature minimizes interaction in the checkout process in support of social distancing recommendations. The SHcan and Go! feature activates through the Sheetz app when in-store and can be used for convenience items such as beverages and snacks. It is not available for gas, age-restricted items requiring proof of identification, or Sheetz’s Made-to-Order food and Sheetz Brothers coffee items. Made-to-Order and Sheetz Brothers coffee items can continue to be ordered and purchased separately through the app or online 24/7. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Sheetz has instituted several changes including suspending self-serve coffee, selfserve fountain beverages, fresh brewed tea, frozen beverages and milkshakes as well as self-serve bakery items. Sheetz is also encouraging social distancing and has implemented enhanced routine daily cleaning procedures with a focus on high-touch surface areas such as gas pumps, order points, counter tops, checkout lines and door handles. Sheetz is also re-training all employees on proper hand washing and hygiene and reinforcing these procedures.
