Three Generations Of Caring BY ANN MEAD ASH
eb Reimers of New Holland remembers when she first began volunteering at what was then called the New Holland Food Bank when it was being run by area churches more than 30 years ago. “Kathy Newswanger asked if I wanted to help,” recalled Deb, adding that the food bank was then located in a little room at the end of a strip mall near the corner of Main Street and Oak Avenue. The recollection is significant because it led to three generations, including her three children and nine grandchildren, now volunteering with CrossNet Ministries in a variety of capacities. Deb, who has since served on the ELANCO School Board and as chair of the CrossNet Ministries board, said there is a singular reason for her efforts. “(Volunteering) is what the Lord tells us to do,” she said, adding that she has served because she felt the Lord calling her to do so.
D
Deb began setting an example for her three children, sons Adam and Josh and daughter Heather, when they were very small, taking them along when the food bank moved to Trinity Lutheran Church. “Many of the volunteers were older, and food was stored upstairs in the church and brought down to the food bank,” said Deb, who noted that her children were able to bring food down from upstairs. “(In the summer), we would work at the food bank and then go to the pool,” she said, adding that her sons, both Cub Scouts, took part in the Scouting for Food collection each fall. Now, both Heather and Deb’s daughter-in-law, Hannah, who is married to Adam, help regularly at CrossNet’s Food and Nutrition Center, and Heather answers phones sometimes in the CrossNet office. Adam delivers food to the pantry and helped with the Homestead Project, pledging money to the effort with each home he sold as a real estate agent. Heather’s husband, Jason, served as a mentor for See Three Generations pg 7

The Lancaster Sunrise Rotary has planned its 17th annual bicycle ride for 2021, dubbing it the Ride for the Community. Club member Steve Bareuther noted that in the wake of COVID-19 restrictions, the 2020 ride was postponed and then finally canceled, but this year, the ride is set to go live. See Bike Ride pg 3
“We’re going to have fun,” said Barb Dagen, one of the organizers of the first May Market. Dagen added that the timing of the event just prior to Mother’s Day will provide opportunities to purchase reasonably priced gifts mothers will appreciate. See May Market pg 7

2017, we received a trailer,” reported Kanter. The ministry now has four trailers, including one sporting air conditioning and heat. The inside of each trailer has been converted to hold clothing on racks, and each one is stocked with clothing for newborns through adults, along with shoes, toiletries, and blankets. Personal shoppers are available to help find sizes and styles. Kanter said that the trailers are at events between four and eight times per month. Anchored is more than a clothing ministry. The 501(c)(3) nonprofit, which is located at 40 S. Chestnut St., Elverson, recently worked with Twin Valley School District to provide Easter baskets and meals to 21 families and 60 children. Hoping to fashion Anchored on the CrossNet model, the organization holds a backpack giveaway, Christmas gift giving program, free community meals, and more. CrossNet now accepts clothing for Anchored Ministries at 123 W. Franklin St., New Holland, on Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Kanter noted that clothing should be clean and in good condition without blemishes or excessive wear. Shoes, blankets, and accessories are also accepted along with toiletries. two ministries partnered for CrossNet’s annual backpack giveaway, with Kanter bringing a clothing trailer to the event. Now, the two ministries partner regularly for the community meal at CrossNet Ministries held the fourth Monday of each month from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the CrossNet Youth Center, 110 W. Franklin St., New Holland. A clothing trailer from Anchored will also be at the Blue Ball Elementary Community Connection event on Thursday, May 6, at the school on Ewell Road in East Earl from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The trailer will also be present at three upcoming CrossNet events at the youth center, including the 2021 backpack giveaway on Tuesday, Aug. 10, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the winter coat giveaway on Monday, Oct. 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and the Christmas gift giveaway on Saturday, Dec. 11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Anchored story began in 2016 when Kanter was studying fashion and praying for God to use her. “I wanted to be the hands and feet, so I prayed for direction,” recalled Kanter, who saw God tap into her love of clothing by giving her a passion to put clothing in the hands of the homeless and others who could not afford it. “One day, I decided to collect clothing and take it to the streets of Reading and hand it out,” stated Kanter, who borrowed a trailer and took 82 boxes of clothing to the city to give away. “In July

Bike Ride from pg 1 riders and nonriders are invited to donate bikes from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the park. More information about the organization may be found at www.thecommonwheel.com. This year, a Shred Event Fundraiser will be held in the park from 9 to 11 a.m. in conjunction with the ride. Bareuther said that this is an opportunity for community members to clean out their basements and file cabinets and make a donation to the club at the same time. Club president Bill Weik noted that shredding by Marco Technologies will happen on site and that 100% of the donation will go to the club. Beginning in 2019, the club offered a more inclusive sponsorship package for local businesses and individuals involving both the club’s Literacy Ride and the car show that members hold in the Neffsville Park each September. Through fundraisers, the club supports a number of local organizations. Weik noted that recent contributions have included scholarships for Manheim Township students, grants to United Disability Services, and funding for the Lancaster Early Education Center playground area. Those who would like to register to take part in the bicycle ride may do so by searching for “Rotary Ride for the Community 2021” at www.active.com. This year’s Ride for the Community will be held at the Manheim Township Community Park, 209 Petersburg Road, Neffsville, on Saturday, May 8, with rolling starts beginning at 7 a.m. Riders must register and checkin between 7 and 9 a.m. The event will follow Pennsylvania’s COVID-19 guidelines, and it will be held rain or shine. Formerly called the Literacy Ride, the event was renamed to better reflect the many community organizations that benefit. The ride is designed to appeal to bicycle enthusiasts at a variety of riding levels, so the club offers four routes - a 10-mile family ride; a 21-mile ride through scenic countryside; a 43-mile ride showcasing farms, schoolhouses, and covered bridges; and a metric century ride of 100 kilometers, equivalent to approximately 62 miles. Metric century riders must depart by 8 a.m. On this course, an optional hill stage called the Cat’s Back challenge will be offered near Fairmount in Ephrata. Ride participants will find water and rest stops located along each of the marked routes. Cue sheets, SAG support, sports beverages, snacks, lunch, and comfort stations will also be provided to registered riders. Since 2018, the Rotary Club has partnered with The Common Wheel, an organization that works to encourage a culture of biking for transportation as well as recreation. The park became a drop-off location, with club members accepting quality, gently used bikes throughout the ride. This year, the partnership will continue, and

According to Chloe Elie, a member of the cast of the upcoming Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) theater production, before choosing the spring show, director Dean Sauder bounced some ideas off his drama class students. Elie noted that when the winter musical show had

LMHS from pg 4 play as a distinct entity. “In the Irish folktale, I am the Great Bear of Orange,” he said, adding that the story is similar to that of “Beauty and the Beast.” “(Instead of objects), the people are transformed to animals, but when a princess loves the bear, he becomes a prince,” explained Kraenbring. Cast member Megan Esch said she enjoys the challenge of playing different characters. “Each skit has a different atmosphere,” she explained, adding that the first one will have a cartoonish feel. Student Sofia MascialeWalmer noted that among the songs would be those originating in West Africa, Ireland, and Spain, along with a selection of lullabies. Katie Sina, who serves as choreographer for the produc-
tion, said that basic costumes with accent pieces will designate different characters. “Another way we are making it fun is by adding pop culture anachronisms (to the timeless tales),” noted cast member Josiah Esch. Masciale-Walmer shared that the biggest challenge is the uncertainty that has surrounded COVID-19 cases and resulting restrictions, but she noted that students are facing the situation with a flexible attitude. “If something happens, we will try to make a way around it,” she said. “But we are putting a ton of hard work in, and if it doesn’t happen, we have to (be prepared) deal with it.” While there is no cost to attend one of the shows, tickets are required. Spartans Host CV in Girls’ Lacrosse Action
BY ARA GRIGORIAN
Garden Spot came up against a Conestoga Valley offense that had precise execution working in a Lancaster-Lebanon League home match on Friday, April 9. The Buckskins earned an 18-5 victory, dropping the Spartans’ league record to 0-3 (2-5 overall). CVs Abigail Morley was the major menace for the Garden Spot defense. She scored nine times and assisted on two goals. Teammate Ellie Livingston added five goals. The defense has impressed head coach Jen Lehman this year, despite what the scores may imply. “Our defense is a solid corps,” Lehman said. “They are playing a different zone this year and they’ve accepted that - taken to it. “The problem seems to be in the transition game,” continued the coach. “We aren’t holding on to the ball. Our defense gets the turnover, and the offense cannot hold on to the ball. So, we’re caught playing defense the whole game. When you give the ball over to the other team 90 per-
cent of the time, you’ll give up a lot of goals.” The Garden Spot offense featured Gwen Varley. Not to be outdone by her opponents, Varley tallied four goals while Emma Gruber added one. Emily Ferris finished with one assist. Lexi Horning got 11 saves in the game as well as the Cocalico game on Wednesday, April 14. The Spartans came up short in that game 15-1. BASEBALL Garden Spot dominated Lancaster Mennonite 21-0 on Wednesday, improving to 2-5 on the season. “We have been struggling lost four games in a row,” head coach Greg Reiff pointed out. “This was a good game. A lot of the young er guys got some experience tonight,” he added. Speaking of young players, catcher Caiden Murphy went 3for-3 in the victory. “I got my freshman starting catcher back today,” said the coach of Murphy. Murphy caught a two-hit shutout as senior Mason Graybill earned the victory. “We hit the ball really well,”
said Reiff. “Colin Smith hit a double off the fence in the first inning. He had two hits.” Justin Petersheim added two hits and drove in two runs. He scored all four times he was on base. “Justin is batting right around .400 with a .500 on-base percentage,” said Reiff. “Outside of Petersheim, Joel Martin, who’s hitting around .370 and Evan Myers, who’s hitting .350 after this game, we are struggling as a team.” In terms of pitching, Graybill, Josh Tudor and Ben Metz have been carrying the load. “Those three have been pitching deep into games,” said Reiff. The Spartans were coming off a rough 10-5 loss to Northern Lebanon on Tuesday. “We had as many errors as we had runs,” Reiff remarked. “Of the 10 runs only five were earned.” The Spartan bats did wake up for a five-run sixth inning. But it was not enough. “They are playing the game of baseball after being two years away from it,” added the coach. “It’s exciting to see the kids on the field.” BOYS’ LACROSSE In a Section Two contest at home, the Spartans came up short in a 10-6 loss to Conestoga Valley on Friday, April 9. The Buckskins took a 4-1 lead into the second quarter. But the Spartans kept pace score for score until it was 7-4 at the half. The Spartans finished with 29 shots on goal. Scoring two goals each were Logan Lesley and Ayden Naranjo while Gavyn Naranjo and Jared Patton each netted one goal for Spot. Gabriel Myer grabbed 12 saves for the Spartans in goal. Cole Leaman recorded two more saves.

The Spartans’ Emma Gruber puts defensive pressure on Conestoga Valley’s Olivia Hess during Garden Spot’s 18-5 loss to the host Buckskins on April 9.
The Spartans upped their production to nine goals and kept on the heels of Lancaster Country Day in Monday’s league match on the road. However, the home team scored six times in the fourth quarter to win 19-9 and drop Garden Spot’s record to 0-6 on the year (0-4 league). Fisher, Lesley, Ayden Naranjo, who also had two assists, and Gavyn Naranjo tallied two goals each. Cameron Proviano scored one. SOFTBALL The Spartans came off a disappointing 6-1 loss at Northern Lebanon on Tuesday, April 13, by posting a 13-6 home victory against Lancaster Mennonite. With the win, the Spartans evened their record at 4-4 and improved to 4-3 in league play. Amelia Mercado struck out
eight batters. “She was hitting her spots and she also had two hits,” remarked head coach Kimberly King. “She has been pitching well all year.” Offensively, it was a team effort. “It was nice to get the bats going,” said King, alluding to the loss the previous day. “Whenever we travel to Northern Lebanon, we seem to come out flat. We just couldn’t get the energy up. “We scored two runs tonight and I told them ‘Show me that you are better than this,’” continued the coach. “They responded by scoring five more runs the next inning.” Lindsay Lapp had three hits as did Ally King. Sydnie King, Abi O’Neill and Britney Esh each stroked two base hits. “Up and down our lineup, everybody helped,” King added. The girls’ win included Lauren Horning’s first-place time of 1:04.6 in the 400m. Nicole Kelch won the 800 in 2:41. Kelch also anchored the 4x800 relay that took first place in 10:56. Kelly returned to the field to win the high jump (5-0). Jason Kulp, Alex McFalls, Sean Kelch and Finn Wenrich won the boys’ 4x400 relay in 3:45 while Wenrich took the 400 (54.5) and McFalls the 800 (2:08). Kelch also took the 300-m hurdles in 48.3. VOLLEYBALL The Spartans topped Governor Mifflin in three straight sets - 2510, 25-18 and 25-21 - in Tuesday night’s non-league boys’ volleyball match at Mifflin. Derrick Lambert’s 11 kills, Tyler Martin’s 15 digs and Jordan Martin’s 32 assists led the way. Joseph Sharp and Jordan Martin had two blocks. Chandler Xiong served two aces as the Spartans improved to 7-1. Three days earlier, the Spartans improved to 4-0 in the league, shutting out Elizabethtown 3-0. On their home court, the Spartans won 25-19, 25-17 and 25-16. Sharp registered 11 kills while Jordan Martin and Griffin Witmer each notched three blocks. Martin also had 32 assists. Tyler Martin had 18 digs and Xiong three aces. TENNIS Hosting Ephrata, the boys’ tennis team fell 7-0 in a Section Two tennis match on Wednesday. The Mountaineers won all four singles matches in straight sets. The Spartans’ twosome of Ani Kukarni and Cole King avoided being shut out in number three doubles, but were on the short end of an 8-2 final. The 7-0 non-league loss at home two days earlier featured a good effort by Dylan Esbenshade at number two singles. He came up short as Townships’ Dharav Kakkad prevailed 6-2, 6-2. With the setbacks, Garden Spot fell to 1-10 (0-4 league).

After disabled United States Air Force veteran Jennifer Cahill was diagnosed with terminal cancer in May of 2020, she was amazed at the number of people who reached out to help her and her husband, Mike, who is also a disabled veteran, with expenses. “I got this diagnosis, and (we) learned we had no burial insurance,” recalled Jennifer. “Some friends took it upon themselves to start fundraisers, and people I don’t know … strangers reached out … even during the pandemic.” The fundraisers were so successful, the Cahills were able to prepay Jennifer’s expenses, and they had money left over. By September of 2020, Jennifer had made up her mind to find a way to aid others in the same situation. “I thought how awesome it would be for others to have that support and help,” she shared. The result is Team Jennifer Cahill Charities, which will hold its kickoff event on Saturday, May 15, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on the grounds of the
Reinholds Fire Station, 138 W. Main St., Reinholds. The event will include car and motorcycle shows and rides, a Chinese auction, more than 20 product and craft vendors, several food trucks, and live entertainment. Spectators are welcome at 8 a.m., with registrations for cars and bikes held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The ride is scheduled to start at noon. Mike noted that the mission of the charity is twofold. First, the group helps preplan and prepay final expenses and arrangements for female veterans who have terminal cancer and do not have life or burial insurance or other resources. He explained that many people believe that veterans are automatically covered for these expenses, but that is not necessarily the case, and many families have to pay significant out-of-pocket expenses. “We will offset final expenses,” explained Mike, who added that funds could be available up to $16,500. Second, Team Jennifer Cahill wants to raise awareness concerning female veterans. Mike pointed out that when most

Wednesday when area residents picked up food. Since Deb was a board member when the organization was able to expand from a youth center to offering a resource center with services to those in need, she was able to recall the experience in detail. “I remember when we were offered the house next door (to the youth center on Franklin Street),” she recalled. “We couldn’t afford it, so we thought, ‘If it’s going to happen, God will make it happen,’ and He did.” Remembering how surprised board members were when the house became available, she said, “(The option to purchase the house) came out of nowhere. Deb’s grandchildren have all helped with CrossNet’s Summer Lunch program, which provides food for ELANCO School District children during the months when school is out. “The grandchildren go along to help deliver lunches to the various sites,” said Deb, noting that sometimes she is at the Food and Nutrition Center with some of her grandchildren and finds Heather and her children volunteering at the same time. During the month of March, both she and Heather were at the food pantry each
