Making An Impact - Virtually CrossNet Presents Video Banquet And Calls Community To Prayer By Ann Mead Ash
Meredith Dahl, executive director of CrossNet Ministries in New Holland, is clear on what New Holland needs during the COVID-19 crisis. “Encouragement, support, and prayer … that’s a big piece of what we’re offering right now,” said Dahl, who noted that the ministry is working to battle discouragement among area residents. Currently, the ministry is running its food pantry by appointment and distributing Power Packs on Wednesdays.
Joan Yunginger, director of social services with CrossNet, and Aryn Burda, case and resource manager for CrossNet, are both handling intakes and helping people apply for benefits by phone. “Aryn and Joan are seeing an increase in call volume,” shared Dahl. On March 23, ministry representatives made the decision to cancel the organization’s annual banquet and breakfast. As part of the event, scheduled to take place Shady Maple on the evening of March 31 and the morning of April 1, CrossNet was slated to host 1,500 area residents who were looking forward to hearing Olympic champion and cancer survivor Scott Hamilton See CrossNet pg 6
Carl Edwards (left photo), director of development and ministries with CrossNet Ministries, and Meredith Dahl (right photo), CrossNet’s executive director, are hosting a virtual banquet to tell the story of how the ministry serves New Holland-area residents and share about the efforts staff are making during the COVID-19 crisis.

and it just might produce a harvest that is both valuable and delicious. “Planting vegetables can be fun and rewarding for the whole family, pointed out Dan Funk, owner of Funk’s Riverview Greenhouses in Washington Boro. “Some spring vegetables such as lettuce, radishes, and spinach can be planted in April and harvested in May. You can follow up with a second planting in the same soil with another crop such as tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants that will be ready to enjoy later in July, Funk elaborated. Isolation and stress can be countered by an intentional effort to focus on something positive, and many have found such value in horticulture. “Flowers around the house can brighten your spirit after being inside during this time, added Funk, suggesting that some area residents may like to try their hand at ornamental plants. For those who wish to add a pop of floral color outdoors but may not have ample yard space, window boxes are one way to dress up a home’s exterior. If produce is the goal, Funk advised picking a location with ample sunlight. “Too much shade and you will just get plant growth without getting any edible product, Funk advised. For those who are new to gardening, just getting started can be an intimidating endeavor.
Seedlings can be started indoors before being transplanted to a garden. Or perhaps space is at a premium, causing some to give up before they even begin. However, area experts can provide valuable insight to these issues. More than happy to provide guidance, Norma Zimmerman from Zimmerman’s Greenhouse of Ephrata supplied ideas for someone hoping to grow vegetables but lacking yard space. “Healthy homegrown vegetables (can be grown) from your own garden or patio, she encouraged. “Grape or cherry tomatoes are the easiest tomato to grow for new gardeners, and herbs are also easy to grow in containers. For the past six years, Community Bible Church in Marietta has offered a creative solution for those who do not
Raised bed gardens, such as these, shown in early stages of preparation, are one option for local residents seeking to try their hand at gardening.

have space for a garden but would like to develop a green thumb, offering rototilled plots to interested community members upon completion of an application. Bonnie Kleinhans is in her second year overseeing the 32 plots, each measuring 30 by 20 feet. “We are blessed with the land and wanted to share it with others and to interact with the community, explained Kleinhans. A raised bed garden can also be a beneficial option, as it can confine the garden to a small location, allowing cultivators to concentrate their efforts. Other benefits of raised beds include a natural barrier that deters weeds and pests while at the same time holding nutrients, improving drainage, and avoiding compaction. Joshua Wenger of Wenger’s Greenhouse in Lititz emphasized the value of a family gardening project and offered helpful tips for those daunted by the thought of getting started. “Start small, keep it simple the first year, then branch out with experience, Wenger suggested. “Imported vegetables cannot equal the freshness, taste, and nutritional value of homegrown fruits and vegetables. As with any worthwhile endeavor, there are sure to be challenges along the way, but a little effort goes a long way. Taking care of weeds before they get out of control and seeking advice from a seasoned gardener will provide a head start for success. “The Lord has a lot of life lessons to teach us from plants, and the best botany classes are hands-on digging in the dirt and tending growing plants, Wenger shared. “Dedicate time daily or weekly to weeding, watering, and pruning and you will be rewarded with beautiful flowers and a bountiful harvest. Lancaster and Chester counties are known for their farms and family-owned operations. Whether the goal is organic, homegrown produce or a refreshing array of blooms, the answers to getting started on a gardening adventure can be found right within the local community.

Fairmount nurse Lisa Martin was recently awarded a Pennsylvania Association of Directors of Nursing Administration (PADONA) Nursing Education Scholarship. Martin is currently working toward her Bachelor of Science in Nursing through Millersville University. To qualify for the scholarship, she needed two letters of recommendation, one from a PADONA member and one from one of her professors. She also needed to be in good standing academically and
to submit an essay. Martin has spent the last 10 years working at Fairmount in Ephrata. She worked for the first nine years as a certified nursing assistant, then enrolled in a nursing program to become a registered nurse (RN). After graduating in 2018, she moved into the position of RN unit supervisor. Fairmount, a nonprofit Life Plan community, is located at 333 Wheat Ridge Drive, Ephrata.

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB) wants people to know that the charitable food network is still operational, albeit with significant precautionary procedures to maintain maximum safety while striving to maintain a robust response. Individuals who are hungry and families that rely on food assistance should still seek help when they need it. access to food pantries to limit the gathering of large groups of people. The process for signing up for the programs can be done over the phone in many cases or will be waived all together, so people should not hesitate to ask for help. Readers may visit the Find Food page on www.centralpafoodbank.org to find the program closest to them. Second, community assistance is needed to keep the CPFB operating well. Volunteerism is critical to the core mission of the CPFB and its partner agencies. To ensure the safety of the volunteers, the food bank has implemented several restrictions, including limiting staffing to only 10 individuals at a time. People who are healthy and have some free time to give are invited to volunteer. Finally, if people want to help, financial contributions are being welcomed. The CPFB can acquire nutritious food in large quantities that has been handled safely and make it stretch very far. A $1 donation can help the food bank provide six meals. Rather than bringing people together in person for a traditional food drive, CPFB staffers can set groups up to do a virtual food drive online. For more information, about the CPFB, readers may contact Amy Hill at abhill@central pafoodbank.org or 717343-9475 or visit the aforementioned website.
GOTR from pg 1 GOTR this spring have not been living in normal circumstances. Since they are not attending school due to COVID-19 restrictions, they are not able to meet with their coaches and teams regularly after school. GOTR has responded to this situation with two new virtual lessons released each Tuesday as part of the GOTR At Home curriculum. The first lesson, which was released the week of March 16, is called “ We Are Unique; We Are Similar.” The lessons can be completed by a girl alone, but they are designed for all household members. “This is a family, at-home, shared experience,” said GOTR Lancaster program director Jennifer West. “We want to lift up the community and bring everyone together to share in the GOTR experience.” Each lesson includes a main concept called a big idea and an explanation of why that idea matters. Games and discussion questions based on ways to explore the theme are included, along with physical activities. “What we have are called Movement Mixes,” explained West, who said that suggestions might include skipping, running in place, or doing star jumps for a certain amount of time. “Not everybody can get outside (to exercise),” West explained. “(The lessons) are encouraging whatever activity you can do at home.” West said that the lessons are sent via email and text to all the families and coaches each week. “We encourage the coaches to reach out to the families and see how the girls are enjoying the lessons and keep them involved in whatever capacity they can,” said West, who noted that she realizes many of the coaches, who are often teachers or parents of the girls who take part,
are still working at some level. “(We appreciate) whatever they can do,” said West. The annual GOTR spring 5K, which is normally held at Franklin & Marshall College in mid-May, will be a virtual event this year. “We are calling it the Virtual GOTR 5K Your Way presented by Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster,” said West, who added that the 5K will be available to complete from Friday, May 29, through Sunday, May 31, and will include various options in addition to running and walking. “We have a bingo card sheet of activities,” explained West. “If (a participant) wants to run the 5K distance over those three days, they can, (but) if they can’t or don’t want to, they can do the different activities on the bingo sheet.” This year’s 5K will be free for those who sign up, but donations will be accepted. “We will email a 5K bib (to those who register) that can be printed out and colored and made their own to wear while doing the activities,” said West. Interested individuals may register at www.gotr lancaster.org/5k-detail. #GOTRGotYourBack is an effort that GOTR has undertaken to engage the broader community during this time. “It’s our social media piece, which is all about planting positive messages in the homes of anyone who follows us,” said GOTR Lancaster executive director Carrie Johnson. “There are challenges (to complete) … and encouraging words. It’s all about bringing our mission to life.” Johnson noted that the organization feels it is especially important to spread a message of kindness. “Just as our 5K is like opening a bottle of sunshine, that’s what we want to be able to do during this time,” said Johnson.

speak. Dahl said she was disappointed to have to cancel, but the exciting news is that Hamilton has agreed to return for next year’s events, which will be held at Shady Maple on Tuesday March 30, and Wednesday, March 31, 2021. In the meantime, a less-than30 minute virtual banquet video has been prepared by Dahl and Carl Edwards, director of development and ministries. In the video, Dahl provides an update on the work of the ministry, talking about perspective and sharing the stories of area residents. “There are challenging stories in our community,” said Dahl, who noted that at the time of the taping, more than 20 people in New Holland were experiencing homelessness. The video features stories of a few CrossNet clients. “We have the story of one of our Pathways to Housing clients named Shelby,” said Dahl, who

noted that two other videos will be featured, along with a short message from Hamilton. “(The virtual banquet is) a way to hear about what happened last year, what’s been going on, and a bit about what we’re doing during the COVID-19 crisis,” said Dahl. The CrossNet Food and Nutrition Center is currently serving up to 40 families a week through its pantry. Those who wish to donate food can drop items on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays on the deck behind the Food and Nutrition Center, 127 Franklin St., New Holland, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. With increased need, Dahl noted that specific foods will be especially appreciated. Items the pantry currently needs include cereal, pancake mix, pancake syrup, canned soup, canned vegetables, crackers, fruit juice, and snack foods for children. Nonfood items that the pantry stocks include diapers and personal care items such as shampoo, deodor-

Those wishing to view the virtual banquet may access it at https://elancocross.org/virtualbanquet. “I really appreciate everyone taking time to watch it and hear how their support and contributions have made an impact in the community and on many people’s lives,” said Dahl, who encouraged viewers to share the video with friends and family. Dahl also expressed gratitude to those who had donated funds for the banquet. “A huge thank you to all our sponsors who continued to fund the event in spite of the change and for all the donations we have received,” she said. “Those funds are going directly to help families right here in the ELANCO School District.” During the video, Edwards expressed his faith in the work of the ministry. “God is at work in the ELANCO community. He has a plan during this time of uncertainty,” shared a confident Edwards.
On April 22, the ministry also took the step of calling the community to prayer. In an email from Dahl, supporters were thanked for their encouragement and blessings, including food pantry donations, letters of encouragement, and donations to the ELANCO COVID-19 Relief Fund. Dahl also had a request. “(From Monday, April 27, through Friday, May 1), we will be asking the community to come together and pray every day for different sectors in the community,” wrote Dahl. The schedule designates community prayer requests on Monday, local businesses on Tuesday, ELANCO School District staff members on Wednesday, first responders on Thursday, and medical professionals on Friday. The email encouraged area residents to reach out with their prayer requests by emailing office@elancocross.org or calling 717-355-2454. The page directs Latinx stakeholders to knowledgebased resources in Spanish that can be accessed easily during this period of social distancing. Sheetz Offers Free Meal Program Sheetz recently announced the expansion of the Kidz Meal Bagz program, which provides free food to help children and families in need as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Meal Bagz are currently available at all 600 Sheetz locations and will be available all day. The Meal Bagz include a turkey sandwich, chips and a beverage. Families interested in taking advantage of the free Kidz Meal Bagz program can go to any Sheetz location and ask an employee for a meal at the register or through the drive-through. Meals will be available daily while supplies last. An adult does not need to be present to obtain a meal. According to Travis Sheetz, president & COO, Sheetz will give away approximately 80,000 meals per week across the communities it serves. The program, which began on April 16, will be available for two weeks at which time it will be reevaluated based on community need. Additionally, every Sunday from 2 to 3 p.m., Sheetz will reserve all 279 of its locations in Pennsylvania to senior citizens, as well as any customer designated as higher-risk. This initiative started on April 19. Sheetz’s store employees will not be checking IDs of customers during this hour, but the company asks that community members respect this reserved hour.
