Amazing archers
BY ANN MEAD ASHAboutthree years ago, Brecknock Elementary School student Henry Demick first heard about the Scholastic 3-D Archery (S3DA) team through his babysitter, Ashlynn Rapp. Henry, now 11, and his sister, Lenore, 9, began visiting the archery club and learning the sport. They first joined the Junior Eagles division for children up to and including age 8. “I would like to see more kids my age (in the club) and (also) more younger kids join the Junior Eagles,” said Henry.
“I want more Junior Eagles (too),” chimed in Lenore. “It’s more fun in the competition with more (archers).”
“Lenore has the distinction of being second in indoor target as a Junior Eagle,” said Bob Lauffer, club president, who founded the club in 2016, competing originally with six students from Garden Spot Middle School. Several individuals and teams did well at the recent State Indoor Target Championship,
including the Eagle team for those ages 9 to 11 and the Young Adult team for people ages 15 to 18, which both placed first in the state. The Youth team for those ages 12 to 14 was the runner-up in its division.
Individual champions included Sophia Spotts, top female in the Eagle Female Open; Jett Anthony, who triumphed in the Youth Male Pins competition; Alivia Slusser, who was tops in the Youth Female Open division; and Cannon Youndt, Young Adult Male Open champ.
The club now includes students from Cocalico School District and Chester and Berks counties as well as ELANCO School District. Students compete in three categories: indoor target, outdoor target, and 3-D targets shaped like animals. The distance an archer shoots to the target is determined by the age group he or she shoots in.
Sophia, a 12-year-old student at North Coventry Elementary School in the Owen J. Roberts School District, began shooting bow and arrow as a 6-year-old with her father, who is a bowhunter. “Once I started shooting more, I liked it more than any other sport,” said Sophia, who recently finished third in the Eagle Female Open on the national level. Sophia, who has been a part of the club for more than five years, said she prefers shooting 3-D animal
A decade of positive presence
Pine Grove Preschool celebrates milestone
BY ANN MEAD ASHIn the past 10 years, Pine Grove Preschool, located in Pine Grove Church, 1194 Reading Road, Bowmansville, has graduated 523 students. Some of those students are spotlighted on an anniversary wall located in the preschool. “Our first graduates are in middle school,” said Susan Yoder, preschool director, who pointed out Garden Spot Middle School student Natalie Shober as one of the oldest on the wall.
targets to other competitive categories because of the variety. “(The target) could be on a hill or down by a river,” she explained, adding that the yardage and type of animal varies as well. As with the Demicks, she hopes see more students in her age group take part. “I would like to see more people join,” she said. “I don’t think people know about (competitive archery).”
The club, which meets on Wednesday and Thursday evenings at the 33-acre Reading Archery Club, 880 Church Road, Reading, has seen much success in its history. “As we move into 3-D season, our Young Adult team will be attempting to be the top team in the state for the seventh year,” said Lauffer. “We have been in the top eight nationally each of the last five years.” The state coordinator for the S3DA clubs is Pete Slusser, who said he got involved when he saw how much fun his children were having participating. Students in third through 12th grades are welcome to join the club. For more information, readers may contact Lauffer by emailing agbob1pin@gmail.com.
Susan has been involved in the preschool since her husband, Jonathan, former pastor of Pine Grove, first suggested the idea more than 20 years ago. “Jonathan saw the impact that a preschool in a church can have on a community,” recalled Susan, who said the church first looked at the concept in 2002. Susan served on a task force to study the idea. “We could not make it work with the existing building (at that time),” said Susan. “When they realized they needed to build, they decided to build for a preschool,” she added, noting that the preschool opened with 35 students in September 2013.
Pine Grove now serves 63 students with two head teachers and two assistants. “Our curriculum is written specifically for preschool,” said Susan, who noted there is an emphasis on kindergarten readiness and alignment with the ELANCO School District. “We work to enhance the transition between preschool and kindergarten and between the home and kindergarten,” she added, noting that ELANCO has invited local preschools to join the transition team. “We share ideas and try to do things that will help make parents comfortable with the transition to kindergarten.”

Each classroom includes a learning center, an area for large group activities, a bathroom, and a sink. Classes are held five days a week in the morning and four days a week in the afternoon for roughly three hours. Classes for 3-year-olds are held on Tuesday and Friday mornings. The preschool also utilizes a new kitchen on the premises, especially in the fall when students make applesauce and pumpkin bread in preparation for a Thanksgiving event that may bring as many as 300 family members to the school over the three days. During the
celebration, parents are given the opportunity to purchase and dedicate a book for the school library, which now numbers more than 500 volumes. “This year, we expanded it so parents can provide an activity box to take outside to use,” said Susan. Among the first eight boxes are those dedicated to the subjects of archaeology, insects, science, gardening, dress-up, and music. Susan commented that the teachers might use box contents as part of a lesson or students might ask for them during outdoor activity time. A scholarship program is available for students thanks to a generous local donor.
“God has really enabled us to establish a positive presence (in the community),” said Susan, who had many years of experience with preschools before becoming director. “We have gotten a lot of positive feedback from elementary teachers that our students are prepared when they come to kindergarten. We are thankful for that.” Susan attributes the school’s good reputation to “well-trained, competent, and seasoned teachers.” “We feel very blessed (to have them),” she said.

Event to feature a tour of local churches
BY FRANCINE FULTONThe Caernarvon Historical Society will offer a tour of churches in Caernarvon Township on Saturday, May 13, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition to touring 12 local churches and learning about their history, attendees will be treated to a luncheon at 12:30 p.m. at one of the tours stops - Mount Culmen Evangelical Congregational Church, 1885 Turkey Hill Road, East Earl.
Among the churches that will be featured on the tour are Twin Valley Bible Chapel, Bridgeville Evangelical and Bangor Episcopal churches in Narvon; Conestoga Mennonite and California Bethany Evangelical Congregational churches in Morgantown; and Bethany Grace Fellowship in East Earl.
According to Yvonne Styer, historical society president and historian, this is the first time that the group has hosted a church tour. “We used to do house tours in Churchtown, and that would include three churches in Churchtown. Someone suggested (featuring) all of the churches in our township,” she said. “We went and asked them, and they all wanted to participate.”
At each site, unique features will be highlighted, and tour goers will learn a bit about the church. “There will be at least one person (on hand) giving a (brief) history of the church,” Styer said. “We think people will enjoy it.”
Styer explained the event is designed to highlight local history and church buildings and to make people aware of the Caernarvon Historical Society and its museum,
located at 2148 Main St. (Route 23), Narvon. The museum includes displays of local artifacts, a library of history books and research books and an archives room. “People can come to talk history or come to visit,” she stated. “I am there every Wednesday
from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.”
A fee will be charged for the church tour. The fee includes bus transportation, the driver tip and lunch. For instructions on how to make reservations, call Styer at 717-4455040. The deadline to order tickets is Wednesday, May 10.

Ferris scores eight against Conestoga Christian
BY ARA GRIGORIANGarden Spot outscored
Conestoga Christian 22-16 Monday afternoon in a nonleague girls’ lacrosse match. The Spartans raised their record to 3-10 on the year.
Though the final result indicated a high-scoring game with plenty of back-and-forth scoring, Garden Spot built a 15-5 lead by halftime.
Emily Ferris had a career game, scoring eight goals and also contributing an assist. Gwen Varley, one of the team’s leading scorers, finished with seven goals while Brielle Moyer scored five goals and assisted twice. Sophomore Sophia Ashcroft and freshman Cecilia Stoltzfus each netted one goal.
Spot out-shot Christian 2724. Jaden Miller (5 saves) and Olivia Scarle (3 saves) made the key plays in front of the Spartans’ net.
The Spartans tallied 10 goals the following day, April 25, in a tough Lancaster-Lebanon League loss at Cocalico. The Eagles outscored the Spartans 11-4 in the second half, defeat-
ing Garden Spot 25-10.
Coming off her seven-goal performance 24 hours earlier, Varley pelted the Cocalico net with nine goals. Moyer scored one.
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
The Spartans extended their winning streak to three matches, topping Ephrata in a key Section Two match on Tuesday, April 25. The 3-0 victory at Garden Spot improved the Spartans’ record to 7-1 on the year.
Tanner Laukhuff poured in 12 kills and served up two aces as Spot topped the Mounts 2518, 25-23 and 25-23.
Providing on-court precision with 15 assists was Keegan Redcay. Nicholas Smucker and Rowan Sensenig each registered three blocks while Josh Martin and Laukhuff each added two aces.
Justin Minger came through with seven digs.
On Monday night, the Spartans took care of nonleague opponent Schuylkill Valley 3-0, posting 25-21, 2515, and 25-22 set scores.
Laukhuff poured in 20 kills in this victory while Redcay
provided the passing - 34 assists.
Smucker had six blocks and Brennan Esh led the team in aces - two. He also had a dig.
The first victory in the win streak was a 3-0 triumph over Lancaster Mennonite on Thursday, April 20. Each of Garden Spot’s winning sets over the visiting Blazers was by the identical score of 25-20.
Laukhuff, who drilled 16 kills, Josh Martin, Dylan Zeiset and Ezra Hubik each had one ace. Minger led the team in digs with six while Redcay came through with 22 assists.
It was Smucker with four blocks and Ari Morales-Aguillar with 12 assists also contributing to the victory.
TRACK
What are the odds that both the Solanco boys’ and girls’ teams would match up against the Garden Spot squads in a Section Two dual meet? What are the odds that the Solanco boys would win their contest 83-67 and the Solanco girls by a nearly identical margin of 85-65?
That was what happened on Monday as the Solanco boys improved to 4-1 on the year and the girls’ team raised its record to 3-2. The Spartan boys fell to 1-3 and the girls’ team to 2-2.
In the girls’ meet, senior Melanie Esh finished second in the 1,600 and third in the 800.
Megan Hechler won the 300 hurdles and sophomore Elise Krock the 800.
Though the Spartans didn’t earn first in the 400, Lauren Horning and Riley Arment took second and third, respectively.
Senior Angela Nuse took
Shirk’s Bike Shop
second in the long jump at 16foot-3.25 as well as third in the 200.
Hechler’s 4-10 high jump and Chloe Grady’s 4-8 were the top two spots. Mikayla Mellinger’s 32-6 and Grady’s 32-2 were second and third in the triple jump while Valerie Martin claimed second in the pole vault at 9-0.
Spartan senior Zechariah Nagle was first in the boys’ 300 hurdles and second in the high hurdles.
Gavin Reimers gave Spot a second-place finish in the 1,600. Ryan Kelch (400) and Trent Hoober (800) were also second-place finishers while freshman Andrew Pemberton, who won the 200, gave his team a third-place spot in the 100.
Gavin Kitch’s 300 hurdles time was good for third. Josiah Smucker and Cole Humphreys took third in the 400 and 800 events, respectively. Humphreys was second in the 200.
In field events, Kaleb Zimmerman claimed yet another shot put win, going 48-11 for that top distance. Among the second-place finishes were Aiden Durante’s triple jump of 40-2.75 and the 10-foot pole vault of Diego Portales. Sean Kelch (9-6) earned third. Durante also took a close third (19-8) in the long jump.
Landon Friedel earned third in the javelin (130-10) as well as the shot put (4310.5).
BASEBALL
The Garden Spot baseball team was involved in three one-run games, winning two of the three in a six-day stretch.
On Wednesday, April 26, the Spartans edged the Eagles
5-4 at Cocalico - two days following a 7-6 defeat of Octorara at home. The one loss was to Donegal by an 8-7 count back on Friday, April 21.
The Spartans (6-8) scored all five of their runs at Cocalico in the top of the fourth inning. Connor Manning, a freshman, showed great poise as he came in to record the save with 1 1/3 innings, retiring all four batters he faced.
Manning earned the save for Madix Bracken, who only allowed two hits. But with four walks, the Eagles managed to chip away at the Spartans’ lead.
The five-run rally was highlighted by lead-off man Caleb Zimmerman’s two-run single. Caiden Murphy, Ryan Speers, who went 2-for-3 on the day, Kye Harting, Gabe Smeltz and Zimmerman each scored a run. Smeltz went 2-for-4 out of the number nine spot, helping to set the table for Zimmerman’s RBI’s.
The Spartans finally walked off the field against Octorara with a dramatic 11th-inning 76 win. The game stayed tied at 6-6 from the fifth inning on.
Speers was tabbed for the start and went five innings, which meant that another stellar relief performance was involved in this win. Zimmerman’s relief work, however, went six innings - six scoreless frames in which he only gave up four hits and a walk.
Zimmerman also had three hits. He scored a run while Manning came through with two hits, including a double, and one RBI.
Speers, Harting (2-for-5) and Brackin each drove in a run as did Smeltz. Harting scored two runs.
Zimmerman slugged a home run and drove in four on his 2-for-4 game at Donegal. Karson Weaver also had a two-hit game as did Harting, who tripled and scored a run.
Murphy also drove in a run, going 2-for-3 with a double.
BOYS’ LACROSSE
The Spartans lost a close 107 match at Ephrata on Friday, April 21. The Mountaineers, on
a Parker Snow hat trick, and four goals by Trent Altemos survived the Spartans’ attack.
Ayden Naranjo led the Spartan attack with a hat trick while Joseph Bernek produced a pair of goals.
Cooper Usner, and Logan Lessley each tallied one goal. Kane Leaman and Max Davis each dished out one assist.
Zack Belknap scored six times as part of a 61-shot attack for the Eagles on Tuesday, April 25. Cocalico topped Spot 23-4 in New Holland.
Garden Spot (7-5, 5-3 league) got 13 saves from goalie Cole Leaman.
Offensively, Naranjo, Berneck, Davis and Jared Patton scored for Garden Spot.
BOYS’ TENNIS
Garden Spot wrapped up the regular season with Walter Churpin, Brandon Herman and Gavin Zook contributing to a 6-1 defeat of Octorara on Monday in non-league boys’ tennis action. The Spartans finished the year 1-9.
Churpin teamed with Zook for an 8-1 defeat of Declan Lomboy and Daniel Keane in the number one doubles match. Brandon Herman, who would go on to win the number two singles 6-3, 6-2, paired up with Jude Kauffman at second doubles - an 83 Spartan win.
Andrew Herman (6-2, 6-2) won the number three singles. Zook battled his way to a team point at number four singles, winning 6-1, 4-6, 10-6.

BY CATHY MOLITORISThink of the Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy, and you might think of a long line of trucks traveling down the roads of Lancaster County. That is certainly central to the event, said Terry Finch, event chairperson, but that is just part of a special day.
“Our event is anchored by
the Convoy trucks and our extremely generous truck drivers, but it is so much more,” Finch shared about the event that kicks off at the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction. “It’s a community celebration of our Wish Children, and we hope everyone who joins us can take part in the games and
Walking tour to focus on architecture
A walking tour of Lancaster’s Chestnut Hill neighborhood has been planned for Monday, May 8, by the Serendipity Group of the Newcomers & Neighbors of Lancaster.
The Chestnut Hill area is renowned for its diverse and exceptional architectural styles, noted Rosanne Sietins, the club member who will conduct the tour. Based on a tour Sietins took with architect Gregory Scott, this activity will feature information about design details of various structures, as well as the design rivalry of architects C. Emlen Urban and James H. Warner.
The Newcomers & Neighbors’ Serendipity group undertakes frequent activities like this walking tour, including visits to unusual locales, including museums, renowned gardens, and theaters. The group plans its activities at a breakfast meeting held on the first Monday of each month.

REAL ESTATE AUCTION
TUESDAY, MAY 16 • 5:30 P.M.
Sale Location: 708 Lime Quarry Rd., Gap, PA 17527
The Make-A-Wish event brings independent drivers and trucking companies from all over the Susquehanna Valley as well as from across the country to participate in the festivities that raise funds needed to grant 75% of the annual wishes in the Susquehanna Valley. Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley grants wishes for children with critical illnesses. Over the years, the Convoy has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars. “In recent years, our record fundraising was just over $600,000,” Finch noted. “Our goal for this year is $700,000.” She said organizers are hoping for 400 trucks to participate in the Convoy this year.
“Our drivers fundraise all
year long,” she explained, “and the top fundraisers in dollars earned make up the top 30 drivers in the Convoy. They are the front row of trucks and will lead out the event as they travel along the Convoy route.” The top driver will pull the Wish Angel trailer, which is a tribute to Wish Children in the chapter area who have passed away in the 34 years since the Convoy began. “Each year, we add names to stars on the trailer before it goes on the route,” Finch remarked. “During our 12 p.m. announcements at the stage, we also ask the top 30 drivers to put their hands on the trailer and have a moment of silence for our Wish Angels.”
When the Convoy heads out, Wish Children are invited to ride along with the drivers, said Finch, noting that up to 100 of them have joined drivers in the past.
The route will run from Manheim to Elizabethtown and Mount Joy, and Finch encourages people to watch the Convoy along the route and cheer on the Wish Children. She recommends viewing the Convoy at LCBC on Route 772 in Manheim, where there will be food trucks and special visitors, and anywhere along Main Street in Mount Joy.

Center to offer scholarships
For the second year in a row, Mountainside Treatment Center in Canaan, Conn., will provide $10,000 in academic scholarships to high school juniors and seniors. This year, Mountainside is expanding its reach to include students in Pennsylvania to increase accessibility and provide an opportunity for Pennsylvania natives to win this financial award.
The treatment provider has created the Mountainside Brighter Future College Scholarship to foster awareness and education about addiction among youths and empower students who have been impacted by substance use disorders to share their stories. Through providing academic scholarships, the treatment center hopes to reduce the stigma surrounding substance use disorders, encourage youths not to be ashamed to share their struggles, and educate others on the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.
Interested students will need to complete an initial application and then submit a short essay explaining how they have been impacted by their own or a loved one’s substance use disorder. The writing sample should also detail how the student’s personal experiences have shaped his or her understanding of addiction as a disease.
The deadline to apply for a scholarship is Monday, May 15, and winners will be announced on or around Monday, June 5. For more information about the scholarship and the essay guidelines, visit https://mountainside.com /scholarships/brighter-future.
