Bowmansville Community Buys Resident A New Mower BY ANN MEAD ASH
hen mowing season ended in 2020, Larry Klaassen knew that Bill Witwer, who mows for Klaassen, along with the Bowmansville Volunteer Fire Company and St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Bowmansville, needed a new mower. Klaassen quickly enlisted two area businesses to help get Witwer the mower he needed. Witwer is a lifelong resident of Bowmansville who is well known in the community. Following Christmas 2020, Klaassen approached Donna Ranck, owner of a Bowmansville restaurant, and Willard Horst, owner of an outdoor power equipment enterprise on Reading Road. “Horst’s Outdoor Power Equipment and Ranck’s Family Restaurant are two of the hubs of the community,” said Klaassen. “We couldn’t have had two better representatives for this project.” Klaassen asked Ranck if he could put a jar on the counter with a sign that read “Donations for Billy’s New Mower.” Ranck agreed right away.

“We will have different things this year, along with things folks are used to as well,” said Becky Link, development associate with Friendship Community. “We decided this year’s theme is ‘Same Run. Different Fun.’” The run Link spoke of is the annual 5K that has been part of the annual Friendship Fest and 5K since 2017. In 2020, the 5K alone was held in September, but this year, the 5K and the Fest will be held rain or shine on Saturday, May 8, See Friendship pg 9
Singer, author, and New Holland resident Shelleen Weaver runs a thrifty kitchen. “I see a recipe, and I don’t have an ingredient, so I think of what I can use instead,” said Shelleen, who turns to items she bought on sale, harvested from her garden, or purchased at roadside stands to fill the bill. But being thrifty does not keep Shelleen from being an adventurous cook. Shelleen Weaver holds a meal she prepared in her New Holland kitchen. Find the recipe at www.townlively.com/coconut -fried-chicken.
“My cooking is a cross between two motivations - how do I use this up and move it out of the freezer?’ and ‘How do I make it healthy?’” noted Shelleen, who added that during COVID-19 restrictions the motivation to use items already in her freezers took over. “I have a ton of freezers,” said Shelleen, who admitted to at least five filled with everything from flour to a case of chicken drumsticks to items from the trees and vines behind the house she shares with her husband, Tom, and their three children. “We have apples, pears, grapes, blackberries, figs, pawpaws, and persimmons,” said Shelleen.

“Anything for Billy,” she said. Klaassen talked to Horst, and a Snapper SPX riding mower was selected for Witwer. The generosity of Ranck’s customers and Horst’s customers quickly became apparent, and by April, the mower had been purchased. Klaassen said he is thankful for area residents who contributed to the effort, adding that the community happily came together to help. “Everybody likes Billy,” noted Klaassen. “That’s the attitude around town.” On April 1, Klaassen, Ranck, and Horst, all gathered at Horst’s to present Witwer with his new mower. Witwer pulled the red Snapper up on the grass to one side of the parking lot while the others gathered around him. After having his picture taken, Witwer grinned broadly and started up his mower.

where they have a huge parking lot,” Finch recommended. “There’s also options to watch at the Country Table and along Main Street in Mount Joy.” The convoy committee is working on ways to include Wish children in the convoy. “Because our Wish children can’t be in public right now, we’re working on getting Wish kids on video chat to talk to the drivers,” Finch explained. “Some of them have been riding with the same driver for years, and they really feel a connection.” This is the second time the event will begin at the Manheim Auto Auction. Last year’s event was a scaleddown convoy of 30 drivers. “We are thrilled to be partnering with the Mother’s Day Make-A-Wish Truck Convoy for our second year,” said Joey Hughes, vice president/general manager of the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction. “The Mother’s Day Make-A-Wish Truck Convoy is such an important fundraising event, and our team at Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction is so honored to host it at our location.” Money raised by the convoy helps to grant wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. “The convoy and the events occurring with it help fund 75% of the wishes in the Susquehanna Valley,” Finch noted, adding that the event committee has a goal of raising $300,000. “In addition to coming out on the day of the event, you can visit wishconvoy.org to see all of our drivers who are fundraising and to donate to any driver you’d like to.”

The Hope for Haiti Benefit Auction of Northern Lancaster County has been scheduled for Saturday, May 15, at the Hertzog Homestead Event Venue, 470 W. Metzler Road, Ephrata. Organizers have planned a day that will include pony rides, food, and an auction. The auction began several years ago when a group of neighbors centered around the common goal of helping those living in poverty to gain education and employment skills to help them become self-sustainable. According to Kristen Hertzog, organizer of the event, the auction will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until the last item is sold. Among the many pieces of merchandise that will go up for bids will be handmade quilts in a variety of sizes, lawn and garden supplies, antiques, collectibles, furniture, gift cards, baskets, and donated gently used items. “We are still accepting donations of new items and financial gifts to offset the cost of the auction,” said Hertzog. Food that will be available for purchase will include chicken barbecue, salads, sub sandwiches, toasted cheeseburgers, pulled pork sandwiches, baked goods, and homemade doughnuts. Hertzog noted that extra attention has been paid to safety measures this year. “There’s natural social distancing due to the 23-acre size of the property (where the auction is held),” she explained. “ We are taking precautions for safety for both the volunteers and the attendees,” she said, adding that masks are strongly encouraged. All the funds raised at the 2021 event will benefit two organizations that help provide education and business training for Haitian small business owners. Paradigm Shift is the education division of Haiti Transformation, which teaches leadership skills and is led by Nelson and Sue Martin. Hope Library is located in Montrouis, Haiti, a town with a population of about 18,000. The library offers books in French, Creole, and English and education programs in the area. The library, which is a Christian training center, has more than 1,000 volumes of books.
Hertzog said auction organizers would like to help the library get to 5,000 volumes. The auction regularly brings together about 100 volunteers from diverse backgrounds who work to help bring education and business training to the people of Haiti. Hertzog estimated that about 1,000 people attend each year. Readers who would like more information may visit www.hopeforhaitibenefit .auction. Hertzog noted that those who cannot attend may donate online via the website. Individuals with questions may call 717-201-4893.

Caprell said one of the biggest reasons to attend the event is that events such as the EPC Golf Outing are important to the funding of GSS. “This event can help hundreds and hundreds of people and provide them with a safe place to call home,” she emphasized. “Your donation and participation will make a direct impact on the community.” To date, the EPC Golf Outing has raised more than $100,000 for charity. Preregistration is required and can be completed up to 48 hours before the event. During my visit, Shelleen served Coconut Fried Chicken, using a chicken she said rated an 8 out of 10 on her healthy chicken spectrum, which is based on whether the chicken has had organic feed, well water, no antibiotics, and plenty of exercise. “I prefer a chicken that has run around,” said Shelleen, who noted that the recipe also calls for unsweetened coconut flakes, eggs, salt, and a variety of nuts. “Here are some ground almonds I had in my freezer. Pecans would be great, or you can throw in sesame seeds,” she shared, adding that she fries the coated chicken in plenty of coconut oil until it is “nice and toasty.” Find the full recipe for Shelleen’s coconut fried chicken with this article at www.townlively.com /coconut-fried-chicken. Along with the chicken, Shelleen served a healthy romaine salad, a side of peaches, and a moist chocolate sugar-free cookie made with okra that she said has no carbohydrates. “The flour is
one part almond, one part coconut, and one part ground flax,” she said. Shelleen’s journey to cooking with free-range chicken and carb-free ingredients began several years ago. “I wanted to cook healthier, so it became my practice that every time I went to a health food store, I would find one ingredient I knew nothing about and try to make something from it,” said Shelleen, who recalled bringing home coconut flour with a plan to make muffins. “I called a 1-800 number on the back of the coconut flour, and they said, ‘Don’t make your muffins. They will be like bricks.’” Instead, they recommended a book, “Cooking with Coconut Flour” by Bruce Fife, which has become a staple of her kitchen. Shelleen is also known for her Amish delight fruit salad, so named because of its popularity in the Plain community. The recipe is available to those who register at www.shelleenweaver.com.

With restrictions being lifted, seniors at Mount Hope reflected on this past year - and how community members can help support the mission of the retirement community. Before she came to Mount Hope, Evaleen worked as a registered nurse and raised four children with her husband, Ernest, who passed away in 2015. When the pandemic hit, she learned to cope without visits from her children and grandchildren. “I just didn’t feel as free,” she recalled. “I kept thinking, ‘This, too, will be conquered,’ ... The Lord gives me what I can bear and the wherewithal to bear it if I need to.” While her family could no longer come and sit on her bed with her, they could talk to her on a phone from outside her window.

Fest. “Doran has been at previous Fests,” she said. Doran, who is legally blind, is known for the woven potholders he sells by donation. “It’s a craft he loves to do, and he donates proceeds back to Friendship,” said Link, who added that the potholders can be used as hotpads and coasters, and that each is colorful and distinctive. “It’s art and function (together),” she noted. Another individual who may attend is Josh Doughty, who fulfilled his lifelong dream of writing a book along with his home-based services team member, Dave, who meets with him regularly. “They’re buddies,” said Link, who explained that Dave encouraged Josh in the writing process. Josh will bring copies of “Josh’s Journey … With Family, Friends & God” to the Fest. A drive-through chicken barbecue will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. as part of this year’s Fest. Both individual half-chickens and chicken meals will be sold. Meals will include a half-chicken, applesauce, chips, a roll with butter, and a beverage. Chicken may be purchased by car or as a walk-up. There will be no seating area. Link said organizers are looking forward to the opportunity to engage with the community in a new way. “It will be a fun day at Friendship Community. YOUR LOCAL VINYL PLANK HEADQUARTERS
BY ARA GRIGORIAN
The Garden Spot boys’ lacrosse team posted back-to-back victories for the first time this season, defeating Wyomissing 8-6 on Saturday, April 24 and doubling up Schuylkill Valley on the road two days later, 14-7. The victories improved the Spartans’ record to 3-10. The wins came following a heartbreaking 12-10 loss at home the previous Thursday to Ephrata. The Mountaineers’ 3-1 advantage following the first quarter also proved to be the winning margin. Despite outshooting the Mounts 33-28, the Spartans couldn’t mount a comeback. With six goals, Brock Boyer was Ephrata’s top scoring force. Ayden Naranjo and Zane Fisher each put up a hat trick and one assist for Garden Spot. Gavyn Naranjo scored twice and assisted on two other goals while Jared Patton’s two assists went with one goal scored. Blake Weaver also netted one goal. Spartan goalie Cole Leaman had eight saves. Garden Spot jumped out to a 4-1 lead over Wyomissing in nonleague play. Gavyn Naranjo’s work near the Wyomissing net made him difficult to defend as the senior poured in five goals. His freshman brother Ayden scored one goal as did Logan Lesley and Thomas Andress, who also assisted on one. Fisher and Michael Zook were each credited with an assist as well. Leaman made 20 saves. The 14-goal attack at Schuylkill Valley included a sixgoal fourth quarter for the Spartans. Fisher led the scoring with four goals and an assist. Ayden Naranjo recorded a hat trick while Andress, Nick Gleason and Gavyn Naranjo each scored twice.

SOFTBALL Coming off an exciting, extrainning victory over Manheim Central on Monday, April 26, the softball team got off to an uncharacteristically poor start the next day at home against Lancaster Catholic. “We came out tired, I think,” said head coach Kimberly King. “We had errors and walks in the first couple of innings and didn’t play well. “But we woke up and played much better,” King added. “I was proud of the way we fought back in the last inning.” The Spartans dropped that game 11-5. Garden Spot did score early as Sydni King reached on a single and Amelia Mercado followed with a hit. King eventually scored on an error. Abigail O’Neill singled home another run in the third inning. In the bottom of the seventh, Allie King doubled, and Sydni King stroked an RBI single. Emma Royle’s hit drove in Sydni King In the triumph over Central, the Spartans escaped a basesloaded, no-out jam in the top of the eighth inning. Offensively, Spot had only three base hits two of which were by Royle - but took advantage of Barons errors. The Barons scored in the top of the second and the Spartans answered with two in the home half. Royle singled followed by two Manheim Central errors. Brittany Esh’s grounder knocked in one run. The Spartans added another run on Central’s third error of the inning. In the eighth inning, Mercado allowed two walks and another base runner on an error. Garden Spot’s Nicklas Gleason and Colby Weaver (25) block Ephrata’s Eric Willets so Kyle Boyer can advance to the goal in league play Thursday, April 22 in New Holland.
“In the Lancaster Catholic game, when Kylie Weinhold came in to pitch, we played excellent defense behind her,” said King. “ We had a double play. Gabby Spencer, our catcher, picked two runners off at third base and threw one out at second base.” Garden Spot had a tough night on Wednesday against Donegal. The Indians scored six runs in the first two innings and went on to win 9-1. VOLLEYBALL The Manheim Central match, as the scheduled regular season finale, looms largely for the Garden Spot boys’ volleyball team. The Spartans won two matches this past week, remaining unbeaten (8-0) in L-L League play while Central improved to 7-1. On Thursday, April 22, Garden Spot blanked Lancaster Mennonite 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-17) at home. They went on to shut out Ephrata on Tuesday, April 27 in New Holland, improving to 11-1 overall. Laine King with 11 kills. Jordan Martin distributed 27 assists and tied Joseph Sharp with two blocks each. Tyler Martin finished with 19 digs while Tanner Laukhuff, Keegan photo by Mona Steinhauer Redcay and Chandler Xiong In Section Two action Thursday, April 22, Garden Spot’s Jared each had one ace. to shortstop; Allie King throws home for a force out. Second batter: bouncer to the pitcher. Mercado throws home for the second out. Third batter: a short fly to left center. Allie King catches the pop up. Bottom of the eight, Mercado singled and advanced to third on a two-base error by the right fielder. O’Neill reached on an error, scoring Mercado with the game-winner.

King finished with 11 kills while Jordan Martin had 22 assists and tied Griffin Witmer with three blocks. Witmer also served up four aces while Tyler Martin led with 21 digs. GIRLS’ LACROSSE The Spartans unleashed a dominant offensive force against Conestoga Christian in a nonleague match in New Holland Monday, April 26. Garden Spot’s 19 shots on goal led to an 18-11 victory, improving the Spartans’ record to 3-8. Emma Gruber scored six times and dished out two assists while Gwen Varley scored four goals and dished out three assists. Brielle Moyer (2a) and Emily Ferris each notched a hat trick. Diana Redcay finished with two goals. Lexi Horning’s four saves helped hold off the visitors. The Spartans’ next opponent was a tough Hempfield squad in a match in Landisville Tuesday. The Knights topped Spot 15-5 with Kayla Brooks and Regan Gillisse scoring five and four goals, respectively. The Spartans got three goals by Varley and two by Gruber. BASEBALL Lancaster Catholic topped Garden Spot 10-4 on Tuesday, April 27. Catcher Caden Murphy drove in two of Garden Spot’s runs in the non-league setback that dropped the Spartans’ record to 2-9. Evan Myers went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Ty Stanley (1-for-3) scored two runs. Justin Petersheim went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Garden Spot was coming off a 17-4 loss at Manheim Central the day before. He also scored a run. Cody Brullo was 1-for-2 with a run. Luke Steiner, Kye Harting and Petersheim each drove in a run. Myers went 1-for-2 with a run scored. Spot let one slip away Wednesday at Donegal. Leading 6-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the gave up three runs, sending the game into extras. Donegal plated the game winner in the 7-6 final. TRACK Lampeter-Strasburg topped Garden Spot’s track teams on Monday, April 26. The L-S boys remained undefeated (5-0), winning 110-40. The Garden Spot girls lost by the very close margin of 78-72. In the 3200m, Christy Martin earned first place, posting a time of 13:29.5. Lauren Horning added a first-place finish in the 400m at 65.7 while Bryna Kelly took the 300m hurdles in 48.6.
