“It’s a really quick and funny play,” said director Geoff Burkholder when describing “Gladys in Wonderland,” which will be presented on Mother’s Day weekend by the Community Homeschool Players. “Gladys in Wonderland” will be staged at Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St. (Route 23), Morgantown, on Friday, May 10, at 7 p.m. and on Saturday, May 11, at 2 and 7 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door. A portion of the admission fees will be presented as a donation to the Twin Valley Fire Company. “Gladys in Wonderland” tells the story of 87-year-old Gladys, who spends her days eating doughnuts and scanning the obituary page. She gets a visit by the Angel of Death, who is ready to take her away. However, since the feisty Gladys is not ready to go, he arranges to See “Gladys” pg 2

Providing Encouragement With “More Love Letters” By Ann Mead Ash
“When my girls were teenagers, we heard of ‘If You Find This Letter,’” said Deanna Riccardelli, a member of More Love Letters Lancaster, referring to a memoir by Hannah Brencher, who began writing letters to strangers in New York City when she found herself

Sign-ups will take place from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, and from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 18. After Brencher wrote about her experiences, she founded The World Needs More Love Letters, and a movement See More Love Letters pg 7
Deanna Riccardelli (left), Jennifer Oehme Knepper (center), and Riccardelli’s son, Levi, worked on writing letters of encouragement when More Love Letters Lancaster met on Feb. 22. The group meets monthly for the purpose of supporting those in need of encouragement with handwritten letters.
Steve Deck, chair of the Long’s Park Summer Music Series committee, said that the group had a specific goal in mind when choosing performers for this year’s schedule. “Getting more music everybody knows was key,” said Deck. “This year we will have several bands that will play more familiar music.” With that aim in mind, the committee has lined up an Eagles tribute band, an evening of Beatles tunes, and a celebration of Woodstock among a number of other musical presentations for the organization’s summer season, which will run from Sunday, June 2, through Sunday, Aug. 25. All Invited To Dream BIG! By Ann Mead Ash
After Cristin Germaine held the third Dare to Dream Single Moms’ Day Out in 2018, she felt a change was in order. “By the end of 2018, I was talking with trusted friends about where to go with Dare to Dream,” recalled Germaine, who felt the Lord pushing her to expand the audience for the next event. “This will be a brand-new venture,” said Germaine of the free re-envisioned event that will be held on Saturday, June 22, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The day will be called “Dream BIG!: Ignite Your Passion,” and it will be open to men and teenagers age 15 and up in addition to women. The event will include praise and worship led by Matt and Kim Goss, speakers, and a number of workshops. “This is for anyone, (whether) married or single,” said Germaine, who explained that the “BIG” in Dream BIG! have a series of visitors stop by to meet her. He also gives her a taste of what life might be like in a nursing home. “It’s a spoof of ‘Alice in Wonderland.’ Like Alice, Gladys meets a bunch of different people,” said Hayley Hopkins, who plays Gladys. “It’s also a motherdaughter play, but they never interact. Gladys is getting ready to die and Doris, her daughter, is getting ready to lose her mom.” Despite the dark subject matter, Burkholder said the play is funny and will cause audiences to consider their own purpose in life. “A lot of the jokes are smart. You have to think about them a little bit,” he said. The play is based on the book written by Rosemary Frisino Toohey. It was first produced in 1999 as part of the Baltimore Playwrights Festival. Burkholder said the Players are making it their own. “The script doesn’t give a lot of direction
about how they want it to be done. The hardest part is figuring out what works best for everybody,” he said, noting that the production does not rely on costuming or scenery. “There are three sets - a kitchen, a retirement home and a funeral home. It’s pretty much conversations. There is a lot of banter.” Burkholder, making his directorial debut, has appeared as a student in the Community Homeschool Players’ past productions, including “The Matchmaker” and “The Importance of Being Earnest.” “Everyone is super talented and also really easy to work with,” he said of the cast and crew. In addition to Hayley, the cast includes Nicole Burkholder, Ashley Porter, Taylor Brown, Seerena Petersen, Jesse Burkholder, Brenna Ezard, Carisa Petersen, Kayla Brown and Josiah Musser. dream again, but through founding the Dare to Dream events, she took that step. An important part of Dream BIG! will be the workshops, which Germaine noted are specifically geared toward helping

In addition, a vendor fair featuring up to a dozen vendors will be held during the event. As an example of what can happen when one dares to dream, Germaine shared some of the events that have occurred in her life in the last year. “I was getting my story out and sharing about Dare to Dream,” said Germaine. “God put it in my heart to do a song.” A friend directed her to Eric Copeland, who is president of a music label, and together they wrote a song called “Dream BIG!” that is based on Germaine’s life story. In September 2018, Germaine traveled to Nashville to record the vocals. Grammy winner Jonathan Crone oversaw the recording of the song, which Germaine coproduced with Copeland. A launch party will be held for the song on Monday, May 13, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Landis Hall at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. Admission is free. “God is doing amazing things,” said Germaine. “I always wanted

might also receive a letter that is more congratulatory than consoling. “If they are doing something amazing, we tell them, ‘We see you and appreciate what you’re doing,’” said Riccardelli. Knepper emphasized the significance of a handwritten letter in a time when texting and email are more often the methods by which people communicate. “ We always connected with writing, and we’ve lost that,” she said. Riccardelli agreed. “In your mailbox, you have bills, flyers, and junk, but when you find something personally handwritten in there … it’s super exciting to see,” she said. “We keep talking about times in our lives when people have

More Love Letters from pg 1 sent us letters,” noted Riccardelli. “I have received letters from strangers. You wouldn’t think that could be encouraging, but it can be.” Knepper noted that she has cherished letters that were sent to her after her father died. When the two women and Riccardelli’s son, Levi, met on Feb. 22, one of the letters they wrote was to a veteran who was struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder. “We are sitting here trying not to weep over this one letter,” said Riccardelli. Knepper noted that there are benefits to the letter writers as well as the recipients. “What (Brencher) did was therapeutic,” noted Knepper. “On our end it is too.” “It gives you perspective in
life,” added Riccardelli. Although the groups has been meeting in the mornings, Knepper noted that some evening meetings may be set in order to allow more interested people to take part. Children are welcome as long as parents bring along quiet activities to keep the children occupied. Readers who would like to learn more may search for “More Love Letters Lancaster” on Facebook or Instagram.

was born. “(I) did this with my daughters six or seven years ago,” recalled Riccardelli. “We would leave love letters around the city (of Lancaster).” More recently, when Brencher asked for people to gather and write more love letters, Riccardelli decided to get involved. “(More Love Letters is) trying to build community groups (that) write to (others) in the community who need encouragement,” she explained. On Feb. 22, Riccardelli and Jennifer Oehme Knepper met at a small café in Lancaster to write. It was the third month that More Love Letters had met. The group, which Knepper noted usually includes up to seven individuals, moves its meeting location in order to support local businesses. “Today we wrote letters to those people listed on the website,” noted Riccardelli, explaining that the individuals on the More Love Letters website are nominated by others who write down the nominees’ stories. Six letter recipients are chosen each month. “Last month the group focused on people in the local community who could use encouragement,” explained Riccardelli, who added that the group would love to receive nominations of area residents who could benefit from an uplifting letter. “We have watched for (people) in the news. It doesn’t have to be something major,” shared Riccardelli, who added that someone who has broken a leg and is housebound might appreciate a letter. Recipients

According to Friendship Community volunteer coordinator Phil Horning, the atmosphere at the organization’s annual Friendship Fest, Auction, and 5K Run is … well, festive. “It’s a lot of fun,” said Horning. “It attracts children and families, and the individuals we support love coming (to the event).” Laurel Spagnolo, director of advancement with Friendship, added that organizers enjoy seeing residents from nearby Landis Homes visiting the fest. Friendship Community, a ministry that helps individuals with developmental disabilities to impact the world with their capabilities, will hold its 2019 Fest, Auction, and 5K, rain or shine, on Saturday, May 11, beginning at 7 a.m. at Friendship Community, 1149 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. The day will open with a cafeteria-style pancake and sausage breakfast and a plant sale. Two years ago, the organization added a 5K run/walk to the annual event. Registration for this year’s 5K is now open at www.friendshipcommunity.net, or individuals may pick up brochures at the Friendship office. Registration will be
discounted through Friday, May 10, and registration will open at 7 a.m. on the day of the run, with the run beginning at 8 a.m. Registrants will receive a goodie bag and a T-shirt while supplies are available. Horning noted that those who sign up for the 5K will have the opportunity to set up their own web page and to request sponsorships from friends and family members if they wish. Runners will be entitled to a free breakfast at the fest. The general auction will begin at 9 a.m. Spagnolo noted that a variety of items are being collected for the auction. She said that purses, household items, quilts, gift certificates, gift baskets, and tickets to local attractions and sports competitions are among the many items organizers plan to have available for bidders. The Friendship Heart Gallery will have a tent filled with artwork available for purchase. The gallery showcases work through which individuals with intellectual disabilities express themselves artistically. Friendship’s Meaningful Day Academy program, which offers Friendship clients an opportunity to contribute to the community, will also have a tent at the fest. Both tents will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Spartans Stumble Late In The Season by Ara Grigorian
Following a stretch that saw Garden Spot’s baseball team win four of five games, the Spartans have fallen on hard times, losing five in a row, including a pair of one-run games. Head coach Greg Reiff pointed to one of those one-run defeats - a 4-3 loss to Lancaster Catholic on Monday, April 22 - and pinpointed where the run of bad luck began. “Unfortunately the last two weeks, after we lost a game to Lancaster Catholic, we’ve been in a tail spin,” Reiff remarked. One week later, the Spartans hosted Manheim Central in a key Lancaster-Lebanon League game. The Barons defeated the Spartans 6-2, holding off a couple of rallies. “They took a lot of pitches,” Reiff said of the patient Baron batters. “We walked six guys in four innings and they bunched their hits and a few walks to score four runs on us.” Garden Spot cut that deficit in half with two in the home half of the fourth. Evan Rizzo and Joe Royle each had two hits and one RBI as the team fell to 7-8 (7-7 in league). The Spartan pitchers were firing the ball past the Baron batters also. Aiden Bracken, who was tagged with the loss, struck out eight batters in four innings. Ray Haddon came on in the fifth inning and got all five of his outs on strikeouts. He did allow two walks and a two-run home run. Haddon was relieved by Mason Graybill,

were hitting the ball and we couldn’t stop them.” The Octorara game on Wednesday was perhaps the most heartbreaking one for Garden Spot. “We had two outs and two strikes on their hitter; the guy hits a two run double to end the game,” Reiff lamented. “It was in our grasp and it was yanked away from us.” “We’re 7-9 and Octorara is 12-4,” he continued. “But we’re as good a team as they are.” The Spartans came on to score three in the top of the seventh, taking a 4-3 lead into the home half of the final frame. “Ben Spencer was at 89 pitches coming into the seventh inning,” Reiff explained. “In high school baseball you have to limit your pitchers to 100 pitches. “He got the first guy out, but their second batter hit a humpback liner for a single,” continued the coach. “Their next guy reached on an error.” With Justin Petersheim relieving Spencer, the Braves’ next batter grounded into a fielder’s choice. A stolen base put both base runners into scoring position. “Petersheim got the 1-2 count but their batter hit the next pitch for a two-run double,” said Reiff. Rizzo, Spencer, Dylan Crossan and Wyatt Weaver each had an RBI for Garden Spot. The Barons drew six walks off Bracken but managed only three timely hits. “We couldn’t get guys home from third base,” Reiff explained. “Our kids are doing everything they can to get runs. It’s not for a lack of effort.” The Spartans’ next game was against Donegal - the second of three games played in three consecutive days. The Indians improved to 10-4 with an 11-0 shutout of the Spartans. Xavier Cannon tripled and drove in three runs and scored one. Brandon Buckius drove in one run on a sacrifice fly and two more on singles, going 2for-2 at the bottom of the batting order. In all, Donegal had 13 hits while Buckius and Matt Wallace combined for the two-hit shutout. “The Donegal game, we just flat out got beat,” Reiff remarked. “They
behind the plate. “We are down to our sixth catcher,” Reiff explained. “You don’t see it on the high school level, seeing this many injuries and having to move players around. “Our third catcher is also one of our top pitchers - Petersheim,” he added. “Connor Plank is a starting outfielder, who caught every game on junior varsity last year. “Our fifth catcher caught on Tuesday. He did a good job, but we just didn’t hit.” SOFTBALL The softball team was stung by a pair of one-run losses against L-L League opponents before bouncing back to defeat Octorara 5-1 on Wednesday. It was senior night for the Spartans, who improved to 10-6 (9-6 league). “It’s always emotional and pumps everybody up - especially our seniors,” said head coach Kim King. “Our seniors did well.” One of the seniors, Elizabeth King, pitched a no-hitter. “She was telling me before the game that her arm hurt,” King explained. “She had pitched eight innings on Monday against Manheim Central and seven against Donegal on Tuesday. That’s a lot of pitching against two good teams.” King walked one batter, who scored on an error for the Braves’ lone run. She went on to record 13 strikeouts and walked only one other batter in her no-hitter. The offense came alive with two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth. King explained that timing was an issue, coming off a game where the Spartans had faced a dominant fast pitcher in Donegal’s Sierra Neiss. “We had a slower pitcher which took our hitters a little bit of time to adjust,” King explained. Camryn Foulk had a hit and an RBI. Elizabeth King had two hits and an RBI. “Ashley Risser had a huge hit for us in the fifth,” King said. “Elizabeth singled, Megan Fisher reached on an error and Ashley Risser came up with a hit to right field that resulted in two runs - one of them was because their right fielder made an error. “Up to that point the score was tied

1-1,” continued the coach. Focht had an RBI grounder followed by an RBI single by Ali King. “Everyone contributed up and down the lineup,” King added. Sophomore Amelia Mercado had two hits. “It was a nice comeback from those two losses, especially in front of a ton of fans and with our seniors contributing,” King added. The Donegal game was a close 4-3 loss - one in which two obstruction calls went against the Spartans, resulting in outs at home plate being overturned. However, the key takeaway from this game was the way the Spartans
handled Neiss compared to their meeting on March 28 at New Holland. “We went from having 13 strikeouts the first time to only four,” King noted. “It was a huge difference for us to put the ball in play. She [Neiss] got a little rattled. That was the biggest difference. “I told the girls to put their bats out there and play with a ‘nothing to lose’ attitude,” she added. “We made them make plays. I was very proud of the way they played.” King allowed only four hits and recorded eight strikeouts, doubling the total by Neiss.

The Eagles improved to 12-4 (6-4 league) while Spot fell to 5-9, 2-7. The Eagles, led by Avery Stark’s 15 kills, eight digs and six blocks, eked out a 26-24 win in the first set. They
won another close set 25-20 before completing the sweep with a 25-20 win. Garrett Fisheer had 13 kills for the Spartans. John Sauder, Caiden Witmer and Griffin Witmer each registered three blocks. Aaron Lapp served up two aces and finished with seven digs. Jordan Marin was tops with 13 assists. TRACK In a Section Two meet at Garden Spot, Elizabethtown’s girls’ team won 119-31 while the boys’ team topped Spot 115-30. Bryna Kelly’s 5-foot high jump was a winning effort for the Spartan girls. Faith Coblentz took the high hurdles in 16.7 seconds. Aaron Good’s 38-foot-9 triple jump was the only win for the boys’ team.

“Coming off an eight-inning game that didn’t start until 7:30, the girls played a great game,” King added. “We were just a little short Monday and Tuesday.” Monday’s game at Manheim Central was an extra-inning loss. Concert Series from pg 1 Pike, Lancaster, beginning at 7:30 p.m., rain or shine. Most concerts will be on Sundays, but three Saturday night concerts will also be included in this year’s lineup. According to Deck, the series will kick off with the June 2 concert, which will feature John McEuen, one of the founders of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. “He is very engaging and will be great for the crowd,” said Deck. The second week of the Summer Music Series has been dubbed “tribute weekend,” according to Deck. “Come and hear songs you know and like to sing along to,” he said. On Saturday, June 8, local artist Corty Byron will play Beatles tunes in a “Post White Album” show, and on Sunday, June 9, Seven Bridges, a nationally touring Eagles tribute band, will take to the park stage. Another June show will feature Allegro, which will return for a Father’s Day performance on Sunday, June 16. Gospel and soul singer Liz Vice will bring her indie rockinfused sounds to the park on Sunday, June 23, and the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” will play a patriotic concert on Sunday, June 30, in conjunction with a fireworks display to celebrate Independence Day. The first concert of July will feature Nooky Jones, which Deck called a “hip” band, noting that it should attract a young crowd. The group will perform in the amphitheater on Sunday, July 7. On Saturday, July 13, Matches, a local band with a sound Deck noted is reminiscent of Tower of Power or Chicago, will play. The Sunday, July 14, band, MINAS, was chosen in response to suggestions made on
the music series’ website. The Brazilian couple plays Latin-flavored music with an expanded appeal. “They have a wonderful sound,” said Deck, who described MINAS as bossa nova. “It’s very danceable without being hard driving,” he said. “It’s bringsomeone-to-dance-with kind of music.” Lachy Doley, a Hammond organ player who is visiting from Australia, will play on Sunday, July 21. “He is the Jimi Hendrix of the Hammond organ. He pounds away,” said Deck. July will finish up with Celtic band Réalta on Sunday, July 28. The Sunday, Aug. 4, concert will feature Danny Kortchmar and Friends, studio musicians known for backing up Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, and others. “They will play lots of familiar music,” said Deck. On Sunday, Aug. 11, country music singer Phil Vassar will play at the park. “His songs are very Americana country,” said Deck. On Saturday, Aug. 17, a special event highlighting the 50th anniversary of Woodstock will feature local artists and more well-known songs. The Sunday, Aug. 18, concert will feature blues artist Davy Knowles, and the season will conclude on Aug. 25 with the Cajun-flavored sounds of Terrance Simien and Zydeco Experience. “He is very engaging and a big crowd pleaser,” shared Deck. More information about the Summer Concert Series may be found by visiting www.longspark.org. Long’s Park Art Festival, which benefits the Summer Music Series, is slated for Labor Day weekend, Friday, Aug. 30, to Sunday, Sept. 1, at Long’s Park.
Celtic band Réalta will join a lineup of a variety of musical groups to play at Long’s Park as part of the Long’s Park Summer Music Series. This year, the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation will emphasize familiar tunes, with a tribute weekend scheduled in June.
