Painting and politicizing

RobertFrick has always loved history, focusing on the subject at Millersville University before becoming an educator and serving 45 years in the LampeterStrasburg School District, including 15 as superintendent. When Frick retired, he delved into his love of history, becoming a guide for walking tours, presenter for Quest for Learning, and author.

Frick will bring his love of local history to New Holland when he presents “They Made Lancaster Great” on Thursday, May 18, at 7 p.m. at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, for the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS). Frick’s multimedia presentation will focus on portrait painter Jacob Eichholtz and the attorney and politician Amos Ellmaker.

According to Frick, Eichholtz, who was born in Lancaster in 1776, was first a tinsmith who liked to decorate each item he produced. “He

painted little flowers or animals on every pot or kettle he made,” said Frick, who noted that critiques of Eichholtz’s initial works were not kind. “Some people … called it ‘hideous,’” he said. Eichholtz sought training from Gilbert Stuart, known for his portraits of George Washington. Frick noted the budding artist took along a piece of his artwork to gain Stuart’s constructive criticism. Eichholtz later lived in Lancaster and Philadelphia, working as a fulltime artist, and eventually painting more than 800 portraits. Local subjects included ironmaster Robert Coleman and a number of his family members.

Mitch Dissinger, member of the NHAHS board and coordinator of the presentation, said he chose Ellmaker for Frick to discuss based on Ellmaker’s New Holland connections. “The Ellmaker Homestead and graveyard are south of New Holland,” said Dissinger, adding, “(The family) owned the Kauffman Building, where the museum is, when it was a tavern.”

Serving the community

Building a deck, repairing a porch and redoing a bathroom floor were just some of the projects completed recently by volunteers with Servants Inc., a nonprofit ministry that helps homeowners in need with home repairs and construction projects.

The work was completed during a mini work camp that ran from April 27 through 29 as part of a new initiative called ReNew Lancaster.

The host site for the program was St. John’s Center United Church of Christ in East Earl. Each morning of See Servants Inc. pg 4

Get the Jesus Advantage

Ron Buch, senior pastor with Breakout Ministries, traces the organization’s Jesus Advantage addiction recovery to the emotional healing offered by the Spiritual Boot Camp the ministry has offered since 2008. “A friend who works for Teen Challenge called it JA (Jesus Advantage). “In the recovery world, we are presenting it as JA,” said Buch. “We said, ‘Let’s do the Jesus Advantage and teach how to get free.’” Buch explained that while many people try to willfully stop addiction, JA

includes a spiritual component that can lead to transformation. JA, which opens with a meal, has been offered each Saturday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. for two years now.

On Saturday, June 3, from 5 to 8 p.m., JA will hold an anniversary open house at Breakout, 2400 Anita Court, Leola. The event will feature a free meal with coffee and tea. “There will be fellowship, and we will talk about what we do,” said Buch, who added that the evening will include testimonies from people who have been positively influenced to stay free from addiction.

“Ellmaker was a local and national politician,” said Frick, of the prominent Lancaster citizen, who was elected to Congress in 1814 but never served because in 1815 the Pennsylvania governor appointed him to serve as a judge for Dauphin, Lebanon, and Schuylkill counties. In 1816, the governor appointed Ellmaker attorney general for the state. Ellmaker was an attorney, who had attended the Litchfield Law School located in New England. He had an office at 42 N. Duke St. in Lancaster, where he practiced law and helped train a lot of new attorneys.

Frick first began presenting talks based on his walking tours in 2014. In February, he presented his 500th

program. His presentations are free, but any honorarium he receives is donated to the memory care program at Willow Valley Communities, where he lives with his wife, Bonnie. He and Bonnie have worked together to turn his lectures into books, including “Together They Made Lancaster Great,” a book on the Founding Fathers, and one about the Supreme Court that focuses on six cases that changed the country.

The program is free and open to the public. More information about NHAHS may be found at https:// nhhistorical.com or by searching for “New Holland Area Historical Society” on Facebook.

Breakout associate pastor Rob Weatherholtz, who specializes in addiction recovery and discipleship, said that JA focuses on continuing recovery from addiction. “You have to be delivered from that lifestyle and everything that has to do with it,” said Weatherholtz. “You have to understand the battlefield that you’re on.” Weatherholtz added that while behavior modification and conflict resolution techniques are part of addiction recovery, they do not offer you a relationship with Christ that leads to transformation. “It is a faithbased approach to recovery,”

he said. “People get saved and develop an internal perspective on the meaning of life.”

Buch noted that the program’s tagline is “Get free … stay free.” “A lot of people are working on getting free,” he said. “(They ask), ‘How do I get out of this loop?’ But we are working on once you do get freedom, how do you stay free? We focus on that relationship with God, others, and accountability.”

Garden party high tea set

On Saturday, May 13, Timbrel Chyatee, a Lancaster minority business owner, will launch her latest endeavor, Chyatee Foundation, which will aim to help empower woman entrepreneurs. The theme of the event, “Chyatee’s Bridgerton Soiree,” was inspired by the leading female Indian stars in the second season of the Netflix series “Bridgerton.” The event will feature a garden party high tea and fashion show at Pineapple Manor, 417 Manor Ave., Millersville, from 1 to 4 p.m.

The Chyatee Foundation’s mission is to provide honest and reliable tools, mentorship, and support to women of color in business, both locally and beyond. The tea will be the organization’s first fundraising event and will seek to celebrate and empower women. Proceeds will provide funds for a scholarship for women in business, as well as support the mothers and women in Chyatee’s Indian facility.

For tickets to the high tea, visit www.eventbrite.com and search for Chyatee’s Bridgerton Soiree. For more information on Chyatee and the Chyatee Foundation, visit www.chyatee.com.

The event introduces kids ages 10 to 15 to outdoor activities. During the event, children will spend 35 minutes at each of 11 stations. The stations will be archery, canoeing, fish/fly fishing, muzzleloading, .22 rifle, trapping, trap shooting, turkey, waterfowlers, PGC wildlife education/Raven Ridge Wildlife Center and beagles.

All equipment will be supplied, and personal equipment will not be permitted. There will be no charge for anything, including lunch,

which will be provided to all in attendance, both participants and those accompanying them. Each participant will receive a T-shirt that must be worn as an external garment during the entire day for safety purposes. All activities are meant to be

hands-on. Field Day will be held rain or shine, and attendees should dress for the weather.

thecamp began at the church, where volunteers and Servants Inc. staff members enjoyed breakfast prepared by church members and a devotional. Participants also received a packed lunch and picked up tools and materials before heading to their assigned work sites.

The work camp concluded with a celebration dinner for all volunteers and homeowners on April 29.

About 20 volunteers completed the work. Participants were mostly from New Holland and East Earl, as well from the York area, where Servants Inc. is based. “This particular group (included) a lot of retired individuals who wanted to serve and give back,” said John Feldmann, director of volunteer engagement for Servants Inc.

As part of the ministry, homeowners looking to have repairs done are asked to apply to receive assistance.

“People reach out to us about repair needs in their homes and we go out to their homes to see if we can help or assist them with volunteers,” said Feldmann. “Once we determine that we can (help), we put them on a waiting list.”

The ministry serves senior citizens, single parents and disabled homeowners. “The majority of clients we work with - about 80% - are older adults, most of whom are on a fixed income and not able to afford to hire a contractor to come and do their work for them,” noted Feldmann.

The organization is always in need of additional volunteers. “We have an application and liability release that volunteers need to fill out,” explained Feldmann. “We have project managers that lead the project (by) helping guide (lessexperienced) volunteers. We do our best to pair volunteers

with projects they are capable of doing or have adequate leadership on-site.”

A highlight of the ministry is volunteer interactions with the homeowners. “We are trying to build relationships with people. We encourage volunteers and homeowners to get together and connect,” Feldmann said. “(During the mini work camp), two or three of the homeowners had great conversations with the team.”

In addition to its home repair services, Servants Inc. sends recovery teams to areas of the United States hit by natural disasters. It also sponsors international trips where volunteers work with established missionaries and local leaders. The mission of Servants Inc. is “to share God’s love through acts of service.”

To learn more about the organization, including volunteer opportunities, visit www.servants.org or call 717378-0336. More information is also available at www.face book.com/ServantsInc.

Upcoming shows at the theater include a variety magic show, “Mystery,” starring illusionist Brett Myers. The show also dives into other worlds in segments such as “Masquerade Ball” and “Secret Agent.”

“Jukebox Jive” is a new music variety show that cele-

brates jukebox hits of the ’50s through the ’80s. The show features vocal performances, variety acts, comedy, magic and new technical elements.

In prior years, the Magic & Wonder team has offered smaller appetizers and concessions during the shows. This year, the team is debut-

ing a full dinner show experience that involves a multicourse meal served 90 minutes before a guest’s selected show time.

For the holidays, the theater will present “Winter Wonderland,” a magic show, and “Holly Jolly Jukebox,” a music show, in November

and December.

“The Magic & Wonder Dinner Theater Show” was originally begun by Myers, an illusionist. Myers has recently been awarded the Merlin Award for the Best Magic and Variety Show.

The 16th annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) Golf Outing will be held on Friday, June 9, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. Tee times will be at 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and members of the public may sign up to play in teams of up to four players. All proceeds will benefit Good Samaritan Services (GSS).

GSS is a nonprofit organization that seeks to assist those experiencing homelessness in Lancaster and Chester counties. First operating under the name Good Sam Shelter, GSS was created in 1999, and it has continued to grow in the years since. The organization currently has five locations, which are located in Lancaster city, Ephrata, Coatesville, Phoenixville and Kennett Square. “We’re really grateful to EPC for partnering with us for so long. It’s a fun way for people to get involved,” said Rachel Shelley, marketing and communications specialist for GSS. “Fundraisers like these make our growth possible and have allowed us to assist more people than ever before.” In the past year, GSS has served more than

600 people in the local area. For more information, visit www.goodsamservices.org.

A prize drawing will occur at the end of the golf outing on June 9, featuring items that have been donated by local businesses. Prizes in the drawing will include items such as tickets to Longwood Gardens, an adventure package from Refreshing Mountain Retreat & Adventure Center, handmade wooden items, golf equipment and gift cards. The prize drawing will be open to players in the morning session and evening session; if a player’s name is drawn after he or she has left, the player will be contacted to receive the prize. businesses have donated items for the prize drawing for the first time. “It’s really neat to have fresh people involved and helping the mission,” said Rachel Stebbins, EPC’s marketing director. “People in Lancaster are very generous and are more than happy to support the cause.”

Food will be included in the cost of admission for the event. Peters’ BBQ will provide meals for lunch and dinner; breakfast from Joe on the Go Coffee Co. will be offered in the morning; and boxed lunches will be provided by Trio Bar and Grill. Drinks such as water and iced tea will be offered throughout the day from a beverage cart.

The funds raised from the EPC Golf Outing will support a variety of projects and initiatives that GSS has begun implementing this year. The Kennett Square facility was opened in December 2022, and the organization plans to break ground for a new office building in Ephrata this summer. The addition of the Ephrata offices will allow caseworkers to give their clients more privacy while assisting them; previously, staff members needed to share offices due to space limitations. GSS has also started to offer free, in-house counseling services to its clients. By removing barriers such as cost and transportation, GSS hopes to give accessible support to clients who are experiencing trauma.

“There’s something about giving back that brings out the best in everyone. Every-

Garden Spot baseball wins three of four

Garden Spot’s baseball team won three out of four games, including a combined shutout by Ryan Speers and Caleb Zimmerman at Octorara, on Monday May 1.

The only loss in that stretch was a game that was rescheduled to Tuesday, May 2, against Lancaster-Lebanon League rival Manheim Central - a 9-7 Central victory.

In that game, the Barons stunned the Spartans with six runs in the sixth inning and one more in the seventh, overcoming a 7-2 deficit on Garden Spot’s home field. The contributions to the

Spartans scoring were pretty much throughout the lineup, including two runs batted in by freshman Connor Manning, junior Caiden Murphy, and sophomore Ryan Speers, who had two hits.

“We have gotten pretty solid production from our lineup all season,” Cody Straub, the Spartans’ head coach, stated. “

Zimmerman, battling leadoff in this contest, stroked a single and a triple. He scored one of Spot’s runs. Also contributing to the run production was junior Karson Weaver, who drew a walk, stole a base, and came around to score on one of Colin

Smith’s base hits. Gabe Smeltz went 2-for-4 out of the ninth spot of the batting order, driving in one run and scoring two.

“Gabe Smeltz has had a few big hits for us, recently,” Straub said, “and the guys behind him like Ryan Speers, Colin Smith and Kye Harting have been producing as well.”

In Monday’s game at Octorara, Smeltz drove in three runs on two hits. Harting, who reached base on a single as well as being hit by a pitch, scored two runs. Smith and Murphy each drove in a run.

“Ryan Speers threw for us on Monday with Caleb Zimmerman closing out the game,” Straub noted. “Ryan has been consistent all season by locating his pitches and let-

ting his defense make plays behind him. I have been impressed with his poise, especially for a sophomore, each time he takes the mound.

“Caleb has gotten some big outs for us to end games, recently,” continued the coach.

In Wednesday’s game at Elco, Zimmerman again came in to record a save. Fellow sophomore Madix Bracken started and went 5 2/3 innings. He struck out six batters in the 3-2 victory, allowing only six hits. Zimmerman faced the minimum four batters in the 1 1/3 relief innings.

“We were able to pick up another section win because of great pitching, solid

defense and timely hitting,” Straub said. “I’ve been happy with the depth we have created in our lineup. That showed up with some timely hits the last few games.”

The timely hitting plus stolen bases by Weaver, Zimmerman and Smeltz helped the Spartans manufacture runs. Bracken not only earned the win, he also had a part in all three Garden Spot runsscoring one and driving in two. He had three hits, including a double and a triple. Weaver had two base hits and scored a run. Smith went 1-for-3 with a double. Smeltz had an RBI single.

SOFTBALL

It was a stretch of games with the depleted Garden Spot roster facing tough L-L League rivals in softball games this past week.

On Thursday, April 26, the Manheim Central squad defeated Garden Spot 18-3. The always optimistic head coach Kimberly King looked for the positive signs of growth in her team.

“We had some hits, and definitely put the ball in play,” King said.

Of those hits, one was a Rebecca Hoover home run. She drove in two of Spot’s runs. Sydni King also had two hits.

“We only struck out six times,” King pointed out. “Paige Brady pitched for us and only walked three.”

On Monday, May 1, the winless Spartans faced Octorara. The Braves defeated the Spartans 26-0 in a game shortened due to the 10-run mercy rule.

“Rebecca and Sydni had hits,” she said. “Lexi Bender and Violet Jackson each had a hit too.

“Violent seems to get on base for us,” King said of the freshman. “She is learning to play the outfield.

“She keeps improving,” continued the coach. “That’s all I can ask of these girls - to continue to get better. The girls have the attitude of being ready for next year.”

In Tuesday’s 21-2 loss to Cocalico, which was a makeup game from the previous week’s rainouts, Cheyenne Bair had her first varsity hit.

Sydni King pitched the next game on the Spartans’ schedule, a 34-0 loss to Elco. King and Natalie Gilgorevic each had a hit.

TRACK

In a Section Two Monday afternoon meet at Elizabethtown, the Bears topped the Spartans 95-55 in the boys’ meet while the Garden Spot girls won by the slimmest of margins, 76-74.

Kaleb Zimmerman’s 51-foot6 shot put was the top distance in the meet.

Landon Friebel’s javelin toss carried 133-8 and his discus toss of 119-4 was also good for first.

Jaden Rodriguez grabbed first in the high jump at 5-8.

While Angela Nuse dashed off with the 100-meter victory for the Spartan girls, Melanie Esh won the long-distance 3200-m race in a time of 13:17.

Megan Hechler claimed both hurdling events and the high jump at 4-10. Nuse also won the long jump at 15-5.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Garden Spot earned its fourth win of the season with a 19-5 victory at home on Friday, April 27. In defeating Lancaster Country Day, the Spartans (4-11) improved to 2-8 in the L-L League.

The attack on the Cougars’ net came from a variety of Spartans, including the six goals by Gwen Varley and five by Brielle Moyer. In addition, Kathryn Pierce, and Emily Ferris each scored a hat trick.

The Spartans got one goal each from Eden Nagle and Alivia Backes.

In the 25-7 non-league loss to Red Lion at home on Wednesday, Varley scored six of Spot’s goals. Moyer scored one and assisted on one of Varley’s goals.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Coming off two heartbreaking defeats, the Spartans blew away Conrad Weiser 14-2 in a non-league boys’ lacrosse game at Weiser on Wednesday, May 3. The win came two days following a tough 12-9 loss at home to Penn Manor and five days following the 9-8 loss at Lancaster Country Day - Friday, April 27.

Joseph Bernek and Kane Leaman also scored while Cole Leaman’s six saves in goals saved the match.

Garden Spot’s five fourthquarter goals were not enough to catch Penn Manor on Monday.

Naranjo scored four goals in this game also while Bernek and Lessley each tallied two. Davis netted one goal.

The Spartans outshot the Comets 49-22.

The Spartans fell to 5-4 in league play with the loss to the Cougars in a match played at Lancaster Catholic. The Cougars outscored the Spartans 5-3 in the first half and by a 5-4 margin in the second. Bernek, Davis, and Naranjo each found the Cougars’ net twice. Patton and Leaman scored one each while Lessley contributed two assists.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

In keeping pace with the unbeaten first-place Manheim Central Barons, the Spartans blanked Lebanon on the road in L-L League boys’ volleyball action Tuesday evening, May 2.

Garden Spot posted winning scores of 25-17, 25-15 and 25-22 in the 3-0 victory.

Junior Nicholas Smucker came through with 10 kills and two blocks. Justin Mininger had five aces and four digs while senior Keegan Redcay dished 17 assists.

The Spartans improved to 9-1 overall and 8-1 in league play.

“In March 2019, York and Lancaster counties were officially designated the nation’s 55th National Heritage Area,” explained Megan Salvatore, visitor service representative for SNHA. “National Heritage Areas are places where historical, cultural and natural resources combine to form a cohesive, nationally important landscape. It’s obvious why some places are designated as national parks, but National Heritage Areas are more complex. Our bucket list showcases some of the reasons why these two counties have been nationally designated.”

SNHA bucket list runs throughout the year. It includes seasonal activities and events, as well as yearround activities to explore.

“Participants can share their bucket list experience by snapping photos, posting them to social media and tagging @susqNHA in the post,” she noted. If participants complete at least five items and submit their information on the SNHA website, they can receive an SNHA sticker.

new things about the region, using the Susquehanna National Heritage Area bucket list,” Salvatore remarked.

“The bucket list tasks open conversations about our collective past and create fun talking points with visitors to the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center and Zimmerman Center for Heritage.

It’s an interesting way for visitors to understand the

national connections this region has woven throughout history.”

A digital version of the list can be found at www.susq nha.org. Paper copies are also available at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia, and the Zimmerman Center for Heritage, 1706 Long Level Road, Wrightsville.

Among the activities on the list are learning about the power of wind turbines at the Turkey Hill Trail Overlook, exploring the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, learning about early science and medicine at Haldeman Mansion, checking out some of the oldest farmers markets in the country and searching for a whimsical gnome garden in Akron.

As Salvatore explained, the

SNHA started the bucket list idea to keep people in the region busy during the pandemic in 2020. The list focused specifically on Columbia that year and then branched out to include the river towns of Marietta and Wrightsville the following year. Last year was the first time the organization launched a bucket list covering the entire region. Salvatore came up with the tasks on the list, noting that they are engineered to explore partners and sites offering a diverse mix of heritage, culture, recreation and refreshments unique to the region. A collaborative effort with the SNHA staff narrowed down the final 55 activities, she said, noting that number was chosen because the region is the 55th designated National Heritage Area.
