Brown baggin’ it
BY ANN MEAD ASHAmy Marburger, food and nutrition manager with CrossNet Ministries, is preparing to feed up to 190 ELANCO School District students each weekday over the summer. Marburger is expecting 125 to 150 students to take part when the program begins on Monday, June 12, but she predicted that by the time the program ends. organizers will be serving 190 a day. “(In 2022), we ended (with) 190 a day,” Marburger said. “Our numbers jumped drastically.”
This year, lunches will be available at three locations on Mondays and Thursdays. Lunches, which are for ELANCO students ages 1 to 21, are offered to families whose children receive free and reduced-cost meals at school. Lunches may be picked up at CrossNet, 110 W. Franklin St., New Holland, from 11 a.m. to noon. Pickup at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland, will be from 11
to 11:30 a.m. Lunches available at Pine Grove Church, 1194 Reading Road, Bowmansville, may be picked up from 11:30 a.m. to noon.
According to Marburger, the lunch schedule will vary once over the summer. “We will be closed on Monday, June 19, so we will distribute on Tuesday, June 20,” she said. The last delivery date for lunches will be Thursday, Aug. 17, and that delivery will include a lunch for Friday, Aug. 18.
Marburger would like to hear from parents of students who plan to participate by Thursday, June 1. Students who do not have transportation to one of the pickup sites should contact their school principal or call CrossNet at 717-355-2454 for assistance.
Bag lunches will include a main food item, fruit, chips, a dessert, and a beverage. Additional snack items will be included when available. The program is in need of individually packaged snack items, such as granola bars and individual cereal cups, along with supplies like See CrossNet pg 5
Memory dragstrip
BY ANN MEAD ASHDean Graybill of Paradise was known for telling stories of his experiences with automobiles. He considered writing a book to share with family, but after talking to some friends, he realized that his tales might appeal to a wider audience. “(They) said it would be of great local interest,” reported Dean. “They said, ‘I would buy that. People would love that.’”
Working with Masthof Press of Morgantown, Dean has produced
151 pages of 165 stories with the title “Burning Rubber, Slamming Gears, & Cheap Gas,” published in mid-March. The pages are punctuated by color and black-and-white photos of vintage automobiles and trucks. Dean began writing about five years ago by sitting at the computer while listening to classic rock ’n’ roll. “It just took me back,” said Dean of the process. “If it had to do with cars, it had stuck in my memory.” Editor Keith Rohrer added color and detail to Dean’s recollections.

To build hope
New Clinic for Special Children breaks ground
BY ANN MEAD ASHOn April 4, the sun shone brightly over the tent set up at the site along Hatville Road in Intercourse where the new Clinic for Special Children (CSC) will be built. Herman Bontrager, board chair of CSC and chair of the Keeping the Promise: Building Hope Capital Campaign, welcomed the gathering, noting, “We have a perfect day.” The groundbreaking and tree planting that occurred on the site not only celebrated the new building, but also commemorated the
founding of CSC by Dr. Holmes Morton and his wife, Caroline, 34 years ago. “They had the vision and courage to establish a clinic to serve children with genetically transmitted diseases here in Lancaster County,” said Bontrager, who noted that the new building will help more families, allow for the innovation of new therapies, and be a place of comfort and hope for generations to come. He stated that more than 1,700 donors have contributed to the $8.8 million raised toward the $12.5 million goal of the campaign.

Adam Heaps, CSC executive director, pointed out that the need had outgrown the current facility in Strasburg. “We endeavored to design a (new) building that offers refuge to families with rare disease. Every detail of the building was designed for the benefit of patient families,” he said.
Glenn Zimmerman, a member of the board of directors and chair of the Gift in Kind committee, said that volunteers and donors to the Gift in Kind campaign have unique connections to the CSC mission. “It is inspiring to see everyone come together for this monumental project,” he said, adding that the committee has secured more than $1.49 million in materials and labor.
John J. Herman, chief executive officer with Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, spoke of the collabo-
rative relationship between his organization and CSC, telling the story of a patient born with spinal muscular atrophy who received gene replacement therapy shortly after birth. “Her life is forever changed,” he said. “The construction of this facility keeps state-of-the-art care here in Lancaster.”
County Commissioners Ray D’Agostino and Joshua Parsons spoke, as did Frank Howe, chair of the Leacock Township Board of Supervisors.
Idario Santos, whose son was born in Brazil with maple syrup urine disease, spoke of the difference CSC made when the disease could not be treated in his home country. “People ask what the clinic did for my son, but the question is really ‘What did the clinic do for my family?’” He said when his family came to the U.S. he saw children with the disease
playing normally while his son had to be in the hospital. “He is the first patient cured from Brazil,” said Santos. “I know what the clinic can do for others like my family.”
Dr. Kevin A. Strauss, medical director for CSC, said, “The family of Idario Santos have shown us what it means to build hope. Hope is not so much a feeling but an act that demands our commitment and effort.” He added, “The future of the clinic is not in concrete, bricks, and mortar, but in the hearts of the people who seek our care. This project is our promise to them.”
The ceremony concluded with the planting of a tree. Richie Lauer, who gave the blessing, prayed, “If this tree
lives, it will be because (God) provided the nutrients, rain, and sunshine. If this clinic serves for generations to come, it will be because (God) provided the resources.” Board members hope the new clinic will open in 2024.
More information about the clinic may be found at www.ClinicforSpecial Children.org.

The Ephrata Cloister Chorus will present its annual spring concert on Sunday, May 21, at 3 p.m. in the 1741 Meetinghouse (Saal) at Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata. The free concert will feature a significant number of compositions created by the community’s founder, Conrad Beissel, and by Sister Föben, who has been recognized as one of America’s first female composers. The pieces have been edited for modern performance by Russell Getz and Christopher Herbert.
In addition, the chorus will present comparative and contrasting choral works by other religious-focused groups of early America, including Moravian, River Brethren, Shaker, and African-American traditions. Give-what-you-will

Five of the concert pieces this year were sung in the pageant of Cloister music.

As is often the case, baseball games can be feast or famine for a given team’s offense. One day the lineup can produce 11 runs and less than a week later, the same team is shut down by an opponent 2-1.
That was the course of action for Garden Spot’s baseball team. The Spartans dominated Cocalico on Thursday afternoon, May 4, posting an 11-2 victory.
Four days later, they started the week with a 2-1 loss to Donegal on a Monday.
The Cocalico game featured a six-run inning and a fourrun inning for the Spartans (9-10; 7-8 league).
Caiden Murphy had four hits in the cleanup spot, including a solo home run. He also doubled and came around to score three times.
Caleb Zimmerman and Madix Bracken each had two hits in the top two spots of the batting order. Bracken had two runs and drove in a pair also.
The consistency of this lineup includes big games from the bottom of the order. Seniors Colin Smith and Gabe Smeltz had three hits each with Smith driving in three runs and Smeltz scoring two.
Ryan Speers went 5 2/3 innings to earn the win. He struck out six, walked two and only allowed two hits.
The Spartans were held to
one run on six hits, including a Zimmerman double, in their 2-1 loss to Donegal. Zimmerman took the tough loss, despite pitching a complete game and striking out six.
Kye Harting singled and scored the lone Garden Spot run. Bracken drove in said run. Speers, Murphy and Smeltz had one single each.
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
The Spartans suffered back-
to-back defeats against Section Two rivals Cocalico and Elizabethtown as they neared the end of the boys’ volleyball regular season.
The Eagles bounced back from a dominant opening set victory by Garden Spot on Thursday, May 4 in New Holland. The Eagles squeezed out a 25-16 win followed by an even closer 25-21 victory before wrapping up the match, 25-16.
Tanner Laukhuff put down a phenomenal 28 kills and one service ace for Garden Spot.
Nicholas Smucker’s five blocks, Justin Mininger’s eight digs and Keegan Redcay’s 32 assists were tops on the team.
Chase Stark registered 17 kills to lead Cocalico.
Laukhuff pounded another 28 kills in a high-scoring match at E-town on Tuesday night. He also registered one block as did Smucker and Ezra Hubik, who also served two aces. Redcay distributed 38 assists and Mininger recorded ten digs.
The Spartans, who had won the first set 27-25, narrowly missed making it a 2-0 advantage. The Bears pulled off a 27-25 win of their own and held on for a 25-21 third set. In the fourth set, the Bears went on to win 25-14.

Blooming Tails
On a Monday in May, four vintage car owners gathered in the Terre Hill Park with Harold Kilhefner for a photograph. Martin Zimmerman brought his salmon-colored 1956 Buick. Ed Shirk brought his blue 1970 Charger. Tim Kilhefner, who is Harold’s cousin, brought his black 1987 Buick Grand National, and Kurt Weaver brought his 1967 Oldsmobile 442 W30. Harold had asked them to meet him with their cars for the purpose of promoting the 40th Terre Hill Antique and Classic Car Show, to be held in the park, 210 Lancaster Ave., Terre Hill, on Sunday, June 4. Car registration will begin at 8 a.m. Registration will end at 11:30 a.m., and voting will end at 2 p.m. Winners will be announced at 2:30 p.m.
Cars will be entered in one of 18 classes sponsored by local businesses. The first six classes are devoted to antique cars ranging from 1900 to 1998. Categories for street
rods and street machines are included, along with a couple classes for Camaros, Firebirds, Barracudas, Javelins, and Mustangs. Corvettes, trucks, motorcycles, and farm tractors will each have a class, and an open class will be designated for vehicles built from 1985 to 2019. Class 17 is open to cars, trucks, and motorcycles that are not yet 25 years old. Class 18 is for AACA (Antique Automobile Club of America) judged cars that have scored a First Junior or Senior award. First-, second-, and third-
place awards will be given out in each class. Rather than bring in judges to examine the cars, the event will provide each registered car owner with a ballot to vote on his or her favorites. Entrants are also eligible for door prizes. In addition, representatives of the Weaverland Valley Fire Company will choose a single car to receive a Best of Show trophy. Winners will be announced at 2:30 p.m. Cars receiving first-, second-, and third-place recognition for each class will be paraded to the stage areas to
receive cash prizes.
The show is all about cars, but the funds that will be raised by the event will help support the Weaverland Valley Fire Company, which serves the towns of Terre Hill and Goodville.
There is no charge for spectators to attend the show. Breakfast and lunch items will be available for purchase in the park pavilion. The show will be held rain or shine.
Readers who have questions about the event may call 717-445-4581.
Pathways Hybrid-learning School in northern Lancaster County will launch a new program for the 2023-24 school year. The homeschool- or co-op-style, halfday program is intended to support parents as teachers and students in kindergarten through grade two (ages 5 to 8) as engaged learners. It is open to any family whether or not the family wishes to ultimately enroll its students with Pathways for grade three and above.
The program will begin on Monday, Aug. 28, with a parent and student orientation and will continue into May 2024 on Mondays from noon to 2:15 p.m. It will follow the general Pathways School academic calendar. The location will vary depending on the class needs of the day. It will be held at either the Senior High Campus at the Brubaker Homestead or at the St. John’s Center Lower-Level Campus, both near Terre Hill.
Early primary children will have opportunities to learn alongside other children. The students will be gently introduced to group learning through activities in science, art, music, literature, and social studies that are led by a team of Pathways educators.
While children participate in these activities, parents will explore and learn instructional strategies, content, and processes. Emphasis will be placed on working with their children in the initial home setting. These parental sessions will be led by the professional Pathways educators. Parents will also gain experience working together with their children and applying
approaches learned, all under the guidance of the Pathways staff. The program is designed to ease parents’ apprehension about becoming a teacher.
Enrollment is now open
for parents and early primary students in the school’s service area of Lancaster and Berks counties. For more information and enrollment forms, visit www.learningatpathways.org.
The book recounts Dean’s experiences from Maple Grove to Pequea Valley and as far south as the Norman Wood Bridge. Names and places that may be familiar to area residents include the “S” turns on Hollander Road, Victor Weaver’s Poultry, Paul Shirk’s car lot, and the New Holland Community Memorial Park, where Dean recalled hanging out in 1971 with eight other young people and their cars. Story No. 81 tells how the group cruised around New Holland and behaved themselves on the “nice straight stretch of Jackson Street,” because they knew local police watched the spot. When they moved to the lot where New Holland Ford is now located, they noticed one of their number was missing. When he arrived 10 minutes later, they learned he had been running interference for the rest by driving exceptionally slowly, which attracted police attention and garnered him a ticket.
Dean also recalled a 1974 incident where he was pulled over while cruising “the loop” in downtown Lancaster. “I had a 1961 Dodge Power Wagon,” he said, explaining that his four-wheel drive, heavy-duty truck had a big
motor. Dean was pulled over on suspicion of having altered the suspension to make the truck sit higher. “I said, ‘This is factory suspension,’” recalled Dean. “The policeman said, ‘Yeah and I’m Elvis Presley.’” Dean agreed to go to court, and headed to Horning Dodge to secure schematics to prove the height of the truck was unchanged. At court, the judge asked Dean and the officer who had pulled him over to take the schematics outside and look at the truck.
“(The officer) could see it was original,” said Dean. “The judge said, ‘Case dismissed.’”
The final story in the book is one that Dean sneaked in as a suprise tribute to his wife, Cathy. He and Cathy met when she became friends with Dean’s sister. Dean liked it when Cathy visited their house, but he was too “bashful” to speak to her.
That changed when he learned Cathy was interested in him. “I heard she wanted to go out with me, and that gave me the courage to ask her out,” he said.
Readers who are interested in a copy of Dean’s book may search for “Dean Graybill” on Facebook or email him at dehemi@comcast.net.

“Gardens of Oz” offers free beauty for the asking
BY JEFF FALKAesthetically pleasing, beauty takes on a deeper meaning when shared with others. In the natural world, there are few things recognized as more beautiful than plants, including trees and flowers.
Manheim Township resident Dennis Denenberg has a deep appreciation for the magnificent and complex 1acre garden that surrounds his home at 410 Valley Road, Lancaster. But that appreciation blooms into pure enjoyment when visitors see it, smell it and experience it.
In fact, Denenberg has made his garden, affectionately referred to as The Gardens of Oz, available as a nonprofit venue for charitably minded organizations to host fundraisers, meetings and events free of charge. In return for the use of the garden, Denenberg does accept donations to Diana’s Dreamers, a charity he founded at Millerville University to honor his late sister Diana DenenbergDurand, who succumbed to breast cancer in 2007.
Denenberg said that the garden has already been reserved for four events this season but that he’d like to see it used four times more.
and color pattern.
“Every garden has a different vibe,” said Denenberg. “This is a ‘Wow.’ Here, you’re in the garden. You’re not just observing it. You’re at the whim of nature. Gardeners appreciate the layout, but every person wants to see colors.”
“Each season affects the garden drastically,” continued Denenberg. “My favorite time is spring. It’s spectacular. Once the first blooms come, from then on, there are colors everywhere. Then with the interaction of animals, the bees and the birds, it’s magical.”

Guided by a pair of certified horticulturists, known as the “Garden Godesses,” the tour takes about an hour to complete.
“My joy comes from seeing people enjoy the gardens,” said Denenberg. “I like to hear people laugh and ask questions. There is nothing as spectacular as nature. Even our grandest man-made monuments don’t come close. It’s fun to share it.”
Plural, The Gardens of Oz is actually an arrangement of more than two dozen separate but intertwining gardens. Mixing both common and exotic plants, the garden features a bamboo grove, fish ponds, a garden dedicated to the Emerald City and Yellow Brick Road, as well as a pink garden honoring the memory of his sister.

It’s also natural beauty 28 years in the making.
When he purchased the property, Denenberg decided after an initial mowing of the lawn that he wanted his yard to be a garden. Now, a blade of grass cannot be found anywhere.
It took Denenberg eight years to fill in the acre lot with plants and flowers, a process he continues to tweak today. Denenberg has been offering tours of the
garden for about 15 years now.
“It’s morphed in that the garden now is much more mature,” said Denenberg. “Life is about giving back. It doesn’t matter how rich or poor you are; give back to others. Even a smile can make someone’s day.”
For additional information about The Gardens of Oz, email Denenberg at drden den@aol.com or call 717682-0206.
