The 31st annual Lancaster Senior Games, held May 6 to 10, had another record-breaking year for attendance with a total of 1,004 participants and more than 335 volunteers. According to organizer Lisa Paulson of the Lancaster County Office of Aging, this was the first time that participation numbers broke the 1,000 mark. “People are having fun, and they just love doing it,” remarked committee member Sandy Hess in regards to the record-breaking participation. “The whole idea is to get anybody 55 and up to keep moving. And it’s not just physical; it’s about using your mind,
too.” The bulk of the events took place at Spooky Nook Sports, with shuttle buses running to events held at other locations, including the Lancaster YMCA, Amos Herr Park, Hempfield High School, Evergreen Golf Course, Leisure Lanes, Buchmiller Park, Overlook Golf Course, and Rocky Springs Lanes. Darts, bocce, and cornhole were among the most popular events, with more than 300 registrants each. Hess, who has been volunteering on the Senior Games committee for more than 20 years, noted that organizers adjust the event offerings from year to year according to what people seem to be interested in.

“Every year we tweak something to make it work a little better,” said Hess. For instance, bridge is no longer offered due to waning interest, but now there is a pinochle tournament. Sometimes event demonstrations are scheduled into the week to test the waters before adding something to the official competition list for the next year. New additions for 2019 included ladder golf, a Nook exercise sampler, and Pilates, as well as a rock climbing demonstration with an opportunity to climb. Volunteers begin meeting monthly in September each year to plan and continue the planning process right up until the events launch in May. “To me it’s rewarding, and I think it is to everybody who’s doing it or we wouldn’t be doing it, because we all volunteer,” said Hess. Lititz resident Carl Risser was among the dozens of individuals gathered under sunny skies at Amos Herr Park in Landisville on May 7 for the horseshoes competition. Risser earned first place for the 80- to 84-year-old division and also participated in bocce, ladder golf, shuffleboard, basketball, and the soccer penalty kick. “I love all of the games,” said Risser. “I love water volleyball too, but they don’t have that yet.” Formerly of New Holland, Risser

said that it was when he moved into Brethren Village in 2007 that he really became active in recreational sports. He does a lot of running, goes to the exercise room on a daily basis, and has been participating in the Senior Games for at least eight years. Alan Ruby of Akron and Barry Lynch of Lancaster took first and second place, respectively, in the 85- to 89-year-old division for horseshoes. This was not the first time that Ruby and Lynch had contended against each other for the championship in horseshoes, and yet: “We’re still friends,” said Ruby with a laugh. Neither Ruby nor Lynch practices horseshoes throughout the year, but they both work out regularly at a local athletic club where they are part of the Silver Sneakers program. Ruby remarked, “I just love the people here and the fellowship that we have. It’s all about the people.” To learn more about the Lancaster County Senior Games, readers may visit www.LancSeniorGames.org.

Run Ride Walk from pg 1 By Ann Mead Ash
“The goal is to grow (Run Ride Walk),” said Kylie Stoltzfus, who handles marketing and promotions for The Factory Ministries, which will be the beneficiary of this year’s fundraiser organized by The Together Initiative. Run Ride Walk will feature two bicycle routes and a 5K run/walk route, along with a Kids’ Fun Run. The eighth Run Ride Walk will take place on Saturday, June 15, beginning in the Intercourse Community Park, 3730 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gordonville, during the annual Intercourse Heritage Days observance, which will be held from Friday, June 14, through Sunday, June 16. Registration on the day of the event will begin at 6:30 a.m. The two bike rides will start at 7 a.m. The Kids’ Fun Run will start at 9 a.m., and the 5K run/walk will begin at 9:30 a.m. The Intercourse Fire Company will offer breakfast items for purchase starting at 6:30 a.m. Riders may choose the 25-mile route through the scenic countryside or, for cyclists who are looking for more of a challenge, a 62-mile metric century ride is offered. An optional King of the Mountain stage will be available for riders who prefer to take on significant inclines. Cyclists will have opportunities to win door prizes. Riders who take part in the King of the Mountain challenges will be entered in a special gift card drawing. At 10:30 a.m., awards will be presented to winners of the 5K run. Trophies will be awarded to the top overall male and female winners. Medals will be given to the top three male and female runners in seven age groups, including 14 and under, 15 to 19, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, and 60 and over. The Kids’ Fun Run, which will be open to children up to age 13, will be held within the park. The route, which is nearly a half-mile long, will traverse the inner loop
of the park for two laps. All children who run the laps will receive participation awards. Organizers encourage runners, walkers, and cyclists to form teams of family members, fellow church members, co-workers, or friends. A “team” option will be available to individuals who sign up online through https://thefactoryministries.com. Prizes will be awarded to the largest and best-dressed teams. Individuals who register by Sunday, May 26, will receive a T-shirt. Packet pickup will be held on June 14 from 5 to 8 p.m. at The Together Community Center, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. In addition inviting to riders, runners, and walkers to take part in the event, The Factory is looking for volunteers to help on June 15. Those who wish to volunteer may call 717-687-9594. The Factory has its roots in the early 1990s, when two local churches surveyed the community about area needs. In response, a former sewing factory in Paradise was converted into The Factory Youth Center. In 2006, The Factory expanded to include social services for adults. As the organization continued to grow, the name was changed to The Factory Ministries. The Factory Ministries now offers a youth center, a food pantry, and social services, and the organization has become a hub for connecting needs and resources in the Pequea Valley area. It is a goal of the organization to empower local residents and strengthen the community. Pictured on front: Paradisearea children took part in the 2018 Kids’ Fun Run, which is part of the Run Ride Walk fundraiser organized by The Together Initiative. This year’s event, which includes two bicycle rides and a 5K run/walk, along with the fun run, will take place in the Intercourse Community Park on June 15 as part of the Heritage Days Festivities.

buggy rides, a petting zoo, craft demonstrations, and plenty of food. The day will begin at 6:30 a.m. with a breakfast of eggs, sausage, pancakes, hash browns, and orange juice. Homemade doughnuts will also be available. Heritage Day will conclude at 3 p.m. Area history, shared by wellknown storytellers, is always an important part of the event. For 2019, three storytellers will appear in the Speakers Tent. Henry Benner will talk about “Early Farming Methods in Lancaster County” at 9 a.m. Alvin Hoover will talk about “Communion Practices: Past and Present” at 10 a.m., and Ken Sensenig will talk about “Casting Lots, for Good and for Ill” at 1:45 p.m. More local history will be presented in an exhibit at the Muddy Creek Farm Library, located on the Fairmount campus. The display tells the story of the migration of the Palati-
nate Mennonites who arrived in the Pequea region of Lancaster County in 1710. Selfguided tours will be available until 3:45 p.m. Farm machinery, including antique balers and hit-andmiss engines, will be demonstrated during Heritage Day. The dynamometer, which measures the accuracy of horsepower, will be on-site again this year from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The device will be available to test tractors. The annual tractor procession will be held at about 2:30 p.m. The silent auction, which is overseen by Kent and Rita Richard, will end at noon in the Speakers Tent. Passage noted that last year’s auction included about 100 items. Flavors associated with Lancaster County are traditionally part of Heritage Day. Passage noted that more than 100 fresh strawberry pies will be made for the event. Pork barbecue sandwiches, soft pretzels, fresh-cut french fries, and ice cream made with hit-and-miss engines will
also be among the fare available for purchase. Heritage Day raises money for the Sharing Fund to help support Fairmount residents who have exhausted their financial resources. Passage said that he hopes this year’s event will raise more than $25,000 for the fund. Although Heritage Day does raise money for the Sharing Fund, Passage emphasized that the event is more about bringing area residents together to remember and appreciate the past and socialize. “This is more of a community fellowship day (than a fundraiser),” said Passage. “It’s lots of friends and family.” Fairmount, formerly Fairmount Homes, is a ministry that has offered services to mature adults since 1968. The organization is governed by a board of directors made up of members of the Weaverland Conference of the Mennonite Church. Readers who would like to learn more about the event may visit http://fairmounthomes.org.

Motorcycle Month Set The Pennsylvania DUI Association reminds all motorists that May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. Motorcycles are smaller than cars or trucks and consequently are less visible to other operators. Drivers are reminded to exercise additional caution during this time of year as they grow accustomed to the increased presence of motorcycles. Double-checking mirrors, turning, and looking and listening for the sound of a motorcycle are just some of the things motorists should be doing before executing any type of lane change or entering traffic. Motorcycle operators also bear responsibility for safe operation. They are 28 times more likely to be killed in a crash than other motorists and comprise the highest percentage of impaired drivers killed in crashes, with 37 percent of all motorcycle fatalities being alcohol-impaired.

The Garden Spot boys’ and girls’ track and field teams competed in the Lancaster-Lebanon League championships, which were held at Hempfield on May 10 and 11. Senior Faith Coblentz and freshman Bryna Kelly earned medals in their events. “She will be greatly missed, head coach Lei Williams said of Coblentz. “She is one of our captains and has provided leadership for the team. In the 100-meter hurdles, Coblentz finished seventh with a time of 16.77 seconds, improving on the 16.89 she had in
the preliminaries. “Last year she was on some of the relay teams, Williams said. “This year we had her focus on hurdles. Kelly earned an eighth-place finish in the high jump with a 4-foot-10 jump. She was coming off consecutive wins in the Spartans’ final dual meets of the season a 4-8 jump against Cocalico on May 6 and a 5-0 versus Elizabethtown the previous week. “We’re hoping to add hurdles to her schedule next year, Williams said. Among the top finishers in the boys’ championship was the 4x400 relay team, which consisted of Aaron Good, Adam Horning, Brylan Eberly, and Alex McFalls. They placed 15th with a time of 3:43.70. “This is the first year that Alex has competed in track, Williams said. “He has been a great addition - started as a sprinter and transitioned to middle distance. “Adam Horning will be returning next year, continued the coach. “He specializes in the 800 and the 1600. He did a great job for us. Ethan Good was 19th in the triple jump with a 36-9.75 measurement.

The choir will sing “Gloria” by Antonio Vivaldi, the spiritual “ Walk in Jerusalem,” and several selections by John Rutter. Music Sunday is a yearly recognition of the importance of music in worship. This event is extra special because the church is currently celebrating the 200th anniversary year. The first cornerstone was placed in December of 1819. The church was used by both Lutheran and Reformed congregations until 1969. The original building was replaced by the present one in 1872, and in the 1950s an addition was constructed. The official church celebration will kick off with a polka Mass scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 11. For more information, readers may visit http://sjclutheran.org or call 717-445-5505.

When the season for outdoor entertaining arrives, time spent in the yard entertaining friends and family tends to increase. Barbecuing lends itself well to informal warm-weather gatherings. While spending time outside, many pet owners like to have their furry companions nearby so they can enjoy the fresh air and fun as well. However, allowing pets to be outdoors when grilling or entertaining friends requires some forethought to ensure pets stay safe. Grilling The act of grilling can be hazardous to pets that can’t resist the aromas of food cooking. Dogs or cats may be drawn to the succulent smells without realizing that there are hot coals or gas nearby. It may be safer to keep animals leashed or contained until the grill has been extin-

utilize their yards as an extension of interior living areas. Cooking, dining, and even watching TV outdoors is increasingly popular. Outdoor living areas can be custom designed and built. In addition, prefabricated modular units that require a much smaller commitment of time and money are available. Patio Homeowners who do not already have a patio will find that adding one can increase a home’s value. Patios help a home look neat, add useable space, and may help a home to sell quickly. Deck Decks can be as valuable as patios. A deck is another outdoor space that can be used for entertaining, dining, and more. Remodeling magazine’s 2018
“Cost vs. Value” report indicates that an $11,000 deck can add about $9,000 in resale value to the home, recouping around 82 percent of the project’s costs. Door update Improve curb appeal with a new, high-end front door and garage doors. If that’s too expensive, a good cleaning and new coat of paint can make an old door look brand new. These easy fixes can improve a home’s look instantly. New landscaping The National Association of Realtors says an outdoor makeover that includes wellthought-out landscaping can net 105 percent ROI. Installing a walkway, adding stone planters, mulching, and planting shrubs are ideas to consider.
Preventing Pests From Spoiling Your Summer Fun Summer is a beloved time of year that’s often dominated by time spent outdoors soaking up summer sun, but all that extra time outdoors can make people vulnerable to summer pests, particularly mosquitoes and ticks. According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, mosquitoes are more than just hungry, unwanted backyard guests. In fact, mosquito-borne diseases, including Zika virus, West Nile virus, and dengue, pose significant threats. While not all mosquitoes carry disease, even those that don’t still bite humans, leaving them to deal with discomfort and itchiness. Taking measures to control mosquitoes can reduce the risk of being bitten by mosquitoes. · Remove places where mosquitoes like to lay their eggs. Mosquitoes like to lay their eggs in standing water. Once a week during summer and other times of the year when mosquitoes might be buzzing around, walk around your property and remove standing water. Bird baths, flowerpots, children’s toys, pools, old tires, and trash containers are some of the more common places where water can collect and present perfect places for mosquitoes to lay eggs. Turn these items over to empty any standing water you find. Remove empty flowerpots and old tires from the property and make sure water storage containers are tightly covered at all times. · Address areas where mosquitoes like to rest. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that mosquitoes like to rest in dark, humid areas. This includes car ports, garages, and beneath patio furniture. Outdoor insecticides can prevent mosquitoes from resting in such areas. When inside a home, mosquitoes may be resting under a sink, in closets, beneath the furniture, or in a laundry room. Indoor insect sprays and indoor

bites is important, and the process starts right in your own backyard. According to Consumer Reports and the New York State Integrated Pest Management Program, controlling wildlife that enters your yard can help keep tick numbers down. Open access means animals can enter … and so can ticks. Fencing and pest management solutions may help. Other ideas, including landscaping techniques, can reduce tick populations and protect people and pets: · Remove leaf litter from the yard. · Clear tall grasses and brush around homes and at the edges of the lawn. Mow regularly to keep the lawn short. · Create a barrier between wooded areas and the yard if it abuts a forested area. According to Consumer Reports, a three-foot-wide path of wood chips or gravel can prevent tick migration by creating a physical barrier that’s dry and sometimes too hot for ticks to tolerate. Such a barrier also serves as a visual reminder to anyone in your household to be especially careful if they step beyond the perimeter. · Bag grass clippings, which can serve as habitats for ticks. · Remove old furniture, trash, and other debris that can give ticks places to hide. · Remember to use a tick-repellent product when venturing into wooded areas. Flea and tick products also are available for pets; consult with a vet.

insect foggers work quickly and can be highly effective, but reapplication might be necessary, as they won’t prevent more mosquitoes from entering the home at a later time. · Check your window screens. Mosquitoes might prefer the outside, but that doesn’t mean they won’t enter a home looking for meals if given the opportunity. Inspect window screens to look for holes that may provide mosquitoes with access to your home’s interior, replacing any damaged screens immediately. When leaving or entering a home, make a concerted effort to close doors as quickly as possible. Despite their diminutive stature, ticks are another big concern for people, particularly those with pets. As the weather warms, ticks are out looking for a host to climb on and get a blood meal. Ticks are a significant concern because they can be infected with bacteria, viruses, or parasites, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, and babesiosis are just a few of the many tick-borne diseases. These pathogens can be passed to humans and pets via the bite of infected ticks. In 2018, at least one variety of diseasetransmitting tick had been found in all of the lower 48 states, according to the CDC. In addition, researchers at Cornell University identified 26 species of ticks along the East Coast alone. Thus, preventing tick

Whether home improvement projects are designed to improve the interior or exterior of a house, focusing on renovations that make the most financial sense can benefit homeowners in the long run. The right renovations can be assets if and when homeowners decide to sell their homes. So how does one get started? A good first step is speaking to a local real estate agent who is knowledgeable about trends in the community. While a swimming pool may be something coveted in one area, it may impede sales in another. It also helps to study generalized trends and data from various home improvement industry analysts to guide upcoming projects. The following outdoor projects are just a few renovations that tend to add value: Fire pit A fire pit is a great place to gather most months of the year. Bob Vila and CBS News report that a fire pit realizes a 78 percent return on investment (ROI). Outdoor kitchen Many buyers are looking to

GET READY FOR
The Great Outdoors: Expand Living Spaces With Clever Ideas Homeowners looking to add more space to their homes do not necessarily need to make major renovations. They simply have to see the possibilities in outdoor living spaces. Outdoor living spaces are coveted niches in a home. The American Home Furnishings Alliance says more than 70 percent of American households have outdoor living spaces, and nearly 70 percent of people use these spaces at least once per week in-season. Furthermore,
homeowners are increasingly interested in enhancing these spaces to make them more usable and comfortable. A recent survey from the online home design and remodeling resource Houzz found that more than 4,500 users were planning a landscape update. In addition, 56 percent of homeowners surveyed were making updates to improve their yards for entertaining. While the creation of outdoor living spaces can cost thousands of dollars depending on the renovation, homeowners have more budget-friendly options at their disposal as well. Outdoor living spaces are booming and highly
achievable, and many such spaces need not be expensive or take up a lot of room. The following are some ways to create inviting spaces no matter how much square-footage is present: Revamp a Garage or Shed Rather than allowing a storage area to be a catch-all for items time forgot, clean out the space and put it to better use. For instance, children may appreciate their own clubhouse away from the main living area. These spaces also can be handy bonus rooms for when Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate and backyard guests need to seek shelter. Wall art, curtains, a pendant light, and some comfortable outdoor-compatible furniture can quickly transform a space. Create a Relaxing Nook Take a ledge, overhang, small terrace, or porch off the house and turn it into a relaxing area for reading a book or sipping a beverage. Use a few outdoor pillows, pull up a small folding table, and dress the area with hanging lights and potted plants for a quiet retreat. Add Privacy to a Porch If privacy is the goal, install curtain rods and hang lightweight mesh or another translucent material that obscures neighbors’ views without blocking out natural light. Decorative privacy screens and lattice are also options that can provide privacy while keeping the space appealing to the eye. Invest in outdoor sofas and chaises to create an outdoor living room right on the porch. If the budget allows, consider closing in the porch as a true threeseason room so it can be used throughout fall, spring, and summer.

Enjoy Safe Backyard Barbecues This Summer Backyard barbecues are synonymous with warm weather. And why wouldn’t they be? Grilling over an open flame when the weather is warm embodies the relaxing spirit of spring and summer, prompting many people to leave their oven ranges behind in favor of charcoal and gas grills. As relaxing as backyard barbecues can be, they can quickly take a turn for the worse if cooks don’t emphasize safety when grilling. According to the National Fire Protection Association, an average of 9,600 home fires are started by grills each year. In fact, the Consumer Product Safety Commission notes that, between 2012 and 2016, an average of 16,600 patients went to the emergency room each year because of injuries involving grills. Such statistics only highlight the need to balance the fun of grilling with safety when hosting a backyard barbecue or cooking for the family. The following are some steps people can take to ensure their backyard barbecues are safe: ¡ Recognize that gas grills pose a threat as well It’s easy to assume gas grills don’t pose as great a threat as charcoal grills, which produce soaring flames once the charcoal is lit. But the NFPA notes that gas grills are involved in 7,900 home fires per year. No grill is completely safe, and cooks must emphasize safety whether they’re using gas grills, charcoal grills, or smokers. ¡ Only use grills outdoors Grills should never be used indoors. Even if rain unexpectedly arrives during a backyard barbecue, keep the grill outside. If

unexpected rain is accompanied by lightning and thunder, extinguish the fire in the grill and go indoors. ¡ Place the grill in a safe location Grills should be placed well away from the home. Avoid locating grills near deck railings or beneath eaves and overhanging branches. Cut overgrown branches before lighting a grill fire if they are in close proximity to the grill. ¡ Keep your grill clean The buildup of grease and fat, both on the grill grate and in trays below the grill, increases the risk of fire. Clean the grill routinely. ¡ Properly light the grill Lighting gas and charcoal grills requires caution. Before lighting a gas grill, make sure the lid is open. If you must use starter fluid to light a charcoal grill, the NFPA advises using only charcoal starter fluid. Never add any fluids to the fire after it has been lit.
¡ Do not leave a grill unattended Cooks should never leave a lit grill unattended. If you must leave the grill, only do so if another adult can stand in your stead. Lit grills pose a threat to children and pets, and unattended grills can be blown over by gusts of wind or tipped by wild animals, such as squirrels. Standing by a lit grill at all times can protect against such accidents and injuries. For more information about grilling safety, visit www.nfpa.org.

“Ethan Good will be returning for his senior year,” said Williams. “He does long and high jump, but triple is his favorite.” Both the boys’ and girls’ teams finished with a record of 0-7. In the Cocalico meet at New Holland, the boys suffered a 105-44 loss while the girls came up short in a 99-50 final. “We just didn’t have the numbers,” Williams explained. “We were so small that it was hard to compete against teams that had double the amount of kids we had. “We didn’t have enough kids to fill some of the relays,” she added. “But it was actually an enjoyable year.” In the girls’ championships, sophomore Cloe Martin finished 17th in the 1600 (6:04.17) and 29th in the 800 (2:46.65). Sophomore and twin sister Christy Martin’s javelin toss of 84-3 was good for 16th place at leagues. “Christy Martin actually qualified for leagues at the Cocalico meet,” Williams explained. “She set a personal record by 20 feet. “She’s very disciplined,” continued the coach. “We’re very excited about her returning next year. We look for great things from her in the javelin.” Amanda Coblentz, a sophomore, ran the 3200 at a 13:22.20 clip (17th place). “Amanda Coblentz and Cloe Martin both do cross country in the fall and transition to long-distance track in the spring,” Williams noted. “Amanda focuses on the 3200 and Cloe on the 800 and the mile.” Elyse Mundorff, whose triple jump of 31-9.75 was good for 15th place, sprinted to a 17th-place finish in the 100-m prelims (13.34). Senior Becca Rissler placed 21st in both the shot put (24-7.5) and the discus (70-9). In the Cocalico meet, Amanda Coblentz won the 3200 in 13:42.1. Briana Zimmerman took the pole vault with a 70 effort while Logan Martin sent the discus flying 80-10 for a top finish. In the boys’ meet versus Cocalico, Horning won the 800 (2:13.1) and Jeremy Rissler the 3200 (11:14.4) while Daniel Hurst was a multiple winner - shot put (55-3.5) and pole vault (7-0). “Jeremy Rissler will be running crosscountry at Juniata College,” said the coach. In the L-L’s, Hurst long jumped 18-2 for a 17th-place finish. “The long jump is a new event for Daniel,” said Williams. “It has been a great event for him. We look forward to him developing his jumping skills. He’s fast and quick.” Good ran the 110 hurdles in 17.84 in the preliminaries and finished 16th. He was also 16th in the 300 hurdles (43.61) finals. Good’s triple jump of 36-9.75 and shot put of 37-6.5 were good for 19th and 21st, respectively. In the discus, sophomore Austin Werley exceeded 100 feet with a 101-3 toss good for 18th place. “Austin Werley is a hard-working kid,” Williams said. “He also plays football. We look forward to having him back for the discus and shot put.” Another athlete the Spartans will miss is sprinter Ben Silva. “Ben, who is an exchange student from Brazil, will also be missed,” Williams said. “He came out for track for the first time. He ran the 100 and 200 and against Cocalico posted times of 11.6 and 24.1, respectively.”

Honduras Mission Slated This summer, several youths and young adults will have the opportunity to work on coffee farms high in the mountains of the Intibuca region of Honduras or minister in the urban setting of Chamalecon on the outskirts of San Pedro Sula. Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM) and VidaNet are partnering together for a four-week summer discipleship training experience called Go! Honduras. In a team setting, individuals ages 16 to 21 will have two weeks of classroom and experiential discipleship training followed by two weeks of outreach - from Friday, July 5, to Thursday, July 18 - in Honduras. Orientation will begin on Friday, June 21, in Akron, and
participants will arrive in Honduras by Monday, June 24. Participants will nurture their own relationships with Jesus by interacting with themes such as Christlike relationships, Holy Spirit empowerment, intimacy with God, biblical truth, evangelism and compassion, the church and the kingdom, world missions, and dying to self and living for Christ. Following these transformative discipleship emphases, participants will venture into outreach activities such as working with children and youths, construction, English teaching, and evangelism. “Cause For Paws” Will Support UDS Service Dogs By Dayna M. Reidenouer
“People love puppies,” remarked Lori Breece, UDS Service Dogs program manager. Breece hopes that a love for puppies, dogs in general, and service dogs in particular will inspire many people to participate in Cause for Paws, a 5K Fun Run, Walk, and Wheelchair Roll that will be held on Saturday, June 8, at 8 a.m. at HACC Central Pennsylvania’s Community College Lancaster Campus, 1641 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster. “We are determining whether we will continue holding the event,” Breece said, noting that a successful event would have 200 entrants. “We’re looking at other opportunities (for fundraising).”
Cause for Paws has been designed to appeal to people with a range of abilities. The entire course is paved, and because it is located entirely on HACC’s campus on a weekend, there will be no traffic. “It’s good for families and safe,” Breece commented. Awards will be given to the people who complete the course the fastest, but there will be other activities available that morning. A Zumba warm-up will be offered at 7:30 a.m. Face painting will be available, and a magician will make balloon animals. New this year, children in kindergarten through grade five will be able to test their agility on a course that will include ladder drills, over/under, hula hoops, cone weaves, tunnels, and a 50-yard dash. agility course will open at 10 a.m. There is a cost to participate, and prizes will be awarded. Dogs will be welcome at Cause for Paws. All canines must always be leashed, have excellent temperament with other dogs and children, and be current on their rabies and distemper vaccines. Cleanup and water stations will be provided. Attendees will be able to meet the new ambassador dog, Nova, and her owner, Jennifer King. Beginning in July, the pair will venture into the community twice a week to introduce folks to UDS Service Dogs and recruit clients and sponsors. King and Nova will be available for lunch-and-learn events, presentations, and other interactions. “We’re trying to put ourselves out in the community more,” Breece explained. “That will help us build our mobility client list.” UDS Service Dogs is primarily
in the business of providing trained canines for people with mobility disabilities and autism, Breece said. “The facility dog list is really growing,” added program coordinator Kristy Smith. Currently, 24 puppies and young dogs are in training to serve an individual or to serve in schools or retirement homes. One of the most recent to enter the program is Murphy, a 9week-old black Labrador who was named in memory of the late radio personality Jerry Murphy. The puppy is slated to be part of the BARKS (Benefit, Assist, Rehabilitated, Knowledge, and Service) program at CI Moshannon Valley, a federal incarceration facility. There, he will be cared for and trained by inmates, and UDS Service Dogs staff members will visit and receive reports. When
UDS Service Dogs program manager Lori Breece (left) and volunteer Susan Vollmar interact with 9-week-old Murphy, who is entering a program that trains canines to provide support to individuals with mobility disabilities or autism. Murphy returns at age 1, he will be assessed for physical condition and ability. If he is of a good size, he may be used to assist an individual with balance, Breece

said. If he has any health quirks, Murphy will be trained as a facility dog. The cost to train a service dog is approximately $25,000 over two years. Ideally, sponsors are found to cover large chunks of the costs. Going forward, however, Breece wants to offer sponsorships for the smaller things that the Cause for Paws supports. A dozen puppies are brought into the program each year, and they need food bowls, leashes and collars, food, treats, and three vests each year as they grow. Veterinary care for the animals includes spay/neuter surgeries, checkups, and medication for fleas, ticks, and heartworms. “We’re always looking for new sponsors and volunteers,” Breece said. Volunteer orientation is held once a month. Interested individuals may call Breece at 717-715-8753. To register for Cause for Paws, readers may visit www.udservices.org/paws. Everyone who registers by Wednesday, May 29, will receive a T-shirt, and all preregistered dogs will receive a bandana.
