The value of service

Penny Burkhart, mother of U.S. Navy SEAL Chad Burkhart, who was killed in an incident involving a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter in 2000, shared a story about members of the Garden Spot High School (GSHS) wrestling team mulching the Chad Burkhart Memorial Park in New Holland on April 29. “While the boys were working hard, a man walking by asked what was happening,” Penny relayed. Upon being informed that the GSHS students were members of the wrestling team who had raised money for the Chad Burkhart Memorial Scholarship as well as the park, the man left and returned with a check for the fund.

Chad was a member of the GSHS

wrestling team before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1993. Scholarship funds are raised by wrestling team members who ask family and friends to pledge a certain amount of money for each time the wrestler pins an opponent. Nearly $3,000 was raised through the pin pledge during the 2023 wrestling season, and over the last three wrestling seasons a total of $7,000 has been raised.

In addition to the scholarship, the money wrestlers raise purchases mulch and helps cover repairs at the playground, which is located adjacent to the Evangelical United Methodist Church, 276 W. Main St., New Holland. This is the third time team members have mulched the park. This year’s volunteers were Joe Cruz, Jordan Cruz, Zach Miller, Ryan Miller, Christian Smucker,

Jayden Redcay, AJ Vega, Travis Salsgiver, and Matthew Casey and his father, Andrew Casey, along with coaches Zach Martin and Anthony Huber.

The scholarship of at least $500 is given yearly to a graduating GSHS wrestler who meets certain criteria. Financial need, grades, extracurricular activity, and community involvement are all considered in choosing the recipients. Vega was one of the scholarship winners this year, along with Blake Weaver. “Both are outstanding representatives of our school and program,” said GSHS wrestling coach Adam Bunting. Each student received $1,000 toward tuition at an accredited post-high school educational institution.

Chad reported for basic training in August of 1994 and then attended

gunners mate training until May 1995. He also underwent Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training, completing the program in October 1998. He served with Special Boat Unit 26 in Panama, and he served with SEAL Team TWO at Little Creek, Va. He is buried in the cemetery near the playground.

“Chad gave his life for freedom while serving as a Navy SEAL in Kosovo,” said Bunting. “This (mulch project), along with the pin pledge, has been a great way for our student-athletes to give back and serve. We appreciate that it’s helping to support a cause that is specifically near and dear to our program heart and tradition.”

More information about the scholarship may be found at www.gardenspotwrestling.com.

UDS Challenger offers program for those with special needs

Teresa Wiedemer, who coordinates the Challenger Football and Cheerleading program for United Disability Services (UDS), can sum up the goal of the program in one sentence. “It’s a great way for kids with disabilities to meet other kids (with disabilities),” she said. Wiedemer, who took over the program in 2022, recalled the story of a young man who joined the flag football league last year. “In the beginning, the boy didn’t realize how active it was,” said Wiedemer. “He would play a few minutes and then sit down, but by the end of the season, he was playing the whole game.”

UDS Challenger Football and Cheerleading will hold games in the gym at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, on Saturdays from Aug. 5 through Oct. 14 from 9:30 a.m. to noon each session. No game will be held on Sept. 2, just prior to Labor Day.

Non-contact flag football is open to boys and girls ages 8 to 21. “We have volunteer coaches and buddies so each kid who needs one has a helper,” said Wiedemer. “Each kid gets to score, and each gets to kick, and we don’t keep track of the score.”

Cheerleading is open to boys and girls of any age. Coach Sophon Bowman works with the

JJ Roach displayed the first-place award he won at the “Art of the State” exhibition.

Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, has announced a new Focus Exhibit in the Snyder Gallery for its 2023 season. The exhibit is “The Market Town and the Metropolis: 18thCentury Lancaster and Its Artistic Connections to Philadelphia.”

Throughout most of the 18th century, Philadelphia remained the largest city in the American colonies and then in the fledgling United States. In many ways, it was America’s political, financial and cultural epicenter. During this same period, the borough of Lancaster was one of the largest non-coastal towns in America and was closely tied to Philadelphia both commercially and culturally. In addition to serving as a source of raw materials, food and supplies for Philadelphia as well as an important market for its elegantly crafted goods, Lancaster, through which passed the “great wagon road,” increasingly came to serve as Philadelphia and its port’s gateway to western settlement. This already strong connection was both manifested by and strengthened with the completion of the Lancaster-Philadelphia Turnpike in 1794, the first longdistance macadam road in the new United States.

With Lancaster’s growing affluence and stronger ties to Philadelphia as the 18th century progressed, the connections between both in the fields of the decorative arts increasingly flourished. Lancaster furniture makers developed unique styles that, while clearly influenced by Philadel-

phia artisans, did not merely mimic them. Artisans, such as furniture makers Thomas Tufft and Peter Frick, worked in both Lancaster and in Philadelphia. Examples of works attributed to both men will be included in this exhibit and demonstrate influences from both Philadelphia and Lancaster.

The exhibit will also highlight local tastemakers who were exposed to new styles through their personal connections to Philadelphia and brought these styles to Lancaster. The exhibit will include a rare, late 18th-century Philadelphia Chippendale

camelback sofa believed to have belonged to Judge Jasper Yeates; the sofa is part of a private family collection and has never before been publicly exhibited.

Also included among Lancaster County tastemakers were affluent persons who had their portraits painted in Philadelphia. The exhibit features a portrait of Lancaster County Judge Henry Slaymaker by John Hesselius and a portrait of Henry’s wife, Faithful Richardson Slaymaker, by John’s father, Gustavus Hesselius, an early Swedish immigrant to Philadelphia. These portraits are also part

of a private collection and have not been publicly exhibited since 1971 at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.

The Richard C. von Hess Foundation is the Founding Sponsor for this exhibit. This exhibit is also funded in part through a grant approved by the Americana Corner Preserving America Grant Program.

Admission to the 2023 Focus Exhibit is included with the purchase of an admission ticket. This Focus Exhibit will run through Tuesday, Oct. 31. For more information about Historic Rock Ford, visit www.historicrockford.org.

Laukhuff named Section Two Most Valuable Player

The Garden Spot boys’ volleyball team did not carry a winning momentum into the Lancaster-Lebanon League playoffs. On Thursday, May 11, the Spartans fell to Manheim Central 3-0 at home in a Section Two battle. It was Garden Spot’s third straight defeat.

“We didn’t play up to par in the last three matches,” Ben Rutt, the Garden Spot head coach, commented. “It’s a combination of communication and discipline breakdown.”

The Barons, led by Logan Groff and Dylan Musser, won a close 25-19 opening set, and went up 2-0 following their 25-17 victory.

“A team like Manheim Central will ball control really well,” said Rutt. “Their passing is very good.”

Garden Spot kept it close in the third set before Central pulled off a 25-21 win.

Tanner Laukhuff and Ezra Hubik led the Spartans with five kills each. Laukhuff also contributed 11 assists and two digs. Hubik also finished with two digs while Josh Martin served up two aces. Nicholas Smucker, a junior, registered three blocks.

The Spartans’ next match was in the first round of the league playoffs. Entering the playoffs as the number two seed from Section Two, the Spartans squared off against Section One champ Warwick

at Manheim Central Middle School on Monday May 15. It was the first match of a twin bill as the Section Two champ Barons faced Section One runner up Cedar Crest in the second match.

Despite the 3-0 loss, Rutt pointed out that the Spartans played well in the first two sets.

“We worked really hard for the first two sets,” said the Spartan coach. “We worked hard defensively for the match.

“But you need consistency for the entire match,” he continued. “After one timeout Warwick came out and rallied, putting together a bunch of points.”

The first two sets were close with Warwick winning 25-22 and 25-21. The Warriors took the third set 25-15.

Laukhuff, who was named the Section Two Most Valuable Player on Wednesday, May 17, poured in 16 kills and distributed nine assists. Keegan Redcay, the team’s usual leader in assists, finished with 17.

Justin Miniger came away with eight digs while Smucker again recorded three blocks.

“Tanner recently took over some setting duties,” Rutt explained. “He’s my leading kills guy. Ezra Hubik and Dylan Zeiset have also been producing for us.”

The Spartans came away as the number eight team in the District Three Class 2A power rankings - just ahead of L-L League foe Cocalico with whom they split the regular season series.

Heading into districts, Rutt wants the squad to focus on fundamentals.

“We have to learn from our mistakes and clean

things up before districts,” he said. “You have to control the things you can control on the court, like our communication. We can’t be making serving errors because you’re letting the opponent off the hook. Lately we’ve been giving up points like that.”

TRACK & FIELD

The Spartans took part in the L-L League Track & Field Championships, which were held at Hempfield on Friday and Saturday, May 12-13.

Among the medal winning events was the 4x100 meter relay team. Chloe Grady, Katelyn Davis, Angela Nuse and Lauren Horning finished fourth with a time of 50.45 seconds.

Nuse took third in the 100m dash at 12.53 seconds.

“She had a personal record of 12.44 seconds in the prelims,” Spartans head coach Terry Arment pointed out.

Megan Hechler’s 300-m hurdles time of 49.29 was good for fifth place.

Spartan senior Kaleb Zimmerman had another outstanding shot put effort.

“He was second in the shot put with 50 feet 10.75 inches,” Arment pointed out.

In the girls’ field events, Nuse long jumped 17-4.5 to finish fifth in that event.

“Overall, we had 13 top-10 finishes and 13 personal records,” added the coach.

Another top-10 finish was Diego Portales, grabbing the 10th spot in the pole vault with an 11-foot effort. Jaden Rodriguez finished tenth with his 5-8 high jump.

Just missing the top 10 was Alan Krock, whose time of 4:34.61 was good for 12th place in the 1600-m.

Railroad Museum posts schedule

Summer is coming, along with a host of familyfriendly activities at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg. To learn more, visit www.rrmuseumpa.org or call 717-687-8628.

Sensory Hours will be offered on Tuesdays, June 13, June 27, Aug. 8 and Aug. 22. During Sensory Hours, the museum reduces lighting and sounds and maintains a low attendance, with quiet spaces set up for breaks, for children and other individuals with special sensory needs. A few of the historic trains will be open, with museum staff members present to answer questions. The program is free of charge for children age 2 and under, personal assistant aides, and current members of the Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. To register, visit www.eventbrite.com.

Railroading Merit Badge Workshops for Scouts ages 11 to 17 will be held on Saturdays, June 17 and Aug. 12. Boys and girls will earn the railroading merit badge through the use of historic artifacts and images, model trains, and behind-thescenes tours. There is a cost to participate. To register, visit www.eventbrite.com.

Reading Railroad Days will take place on Wednesday, June 28, to Sunday, July 2 and Wednesday, July 5, to Saturday, July 8. Admission is included in the regular museum admission. This annual event highlights the historic Reading Railroad with an enormous, detailed HOscale model train layout of the Reading Railroad, oper-

ated by members of the Reading Company Technical & Historical Society. Visitors also may view historic Reading Company equipment from the museum’s collection.

Model Railroading Days will be held on Friday, Aug. 18, to Sunday, Aug. 20. Admission is included in the regular museum admission. Visitors will experience a world of model trains in action with operating layouts and static displays in different gauges from a variety of participating model train enthusiast groups and clubs. The museum’s own Pennsylvania Middle Division and Pennsylvania Landscapes operating HO scale layouts also are featured.

The Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania will commemorate their 40th anniversary in 2023 with a limited-edition, HOscale, custom-designed boxcar. This unique boxcar, and one of the first-ever custom HO-scale projects from Lionel, features the 1983 Grif Teller painting of the John Bull locomotive commissioned by the Friends, a 2023 photo of the John Bull and the first logo of the Friends, a stylized version of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s historic Broad Street Station clock. The boxcar comes ready to run on operating HO-scale layouts with metal wheels, metal couplers, opening doors, and added weights.

The order form may be downloaded at www.rrmuseumpa.org. Orders may also be placed in person at the Whistle Stop Shop museum store during regular business hours, while supplies last.
