Summer Lunch Program Schedules Start Date my Marburger, food and nutrition manager with CrossNet Ministries, is looking forward to providing nourishment to ELANCO School District students through the 2021 free summer lunch program, which will start on Monday, June 7. Marburger would like to hear back from those who wish to participate by Tuesday, June 1. Marburger also detailed some changes in this year’s program, which will run through Thursday, Aug. 26. “We will do a two-day-a-week pickup,” she explained. “On Monday, students will receive three lunches and on Thursdays two lunches.” Marburger added that the CrossNet pickup location will be at the CrossNet Youth Center, 110 W. Franklin St., New Holland, from 11 a.m. to noon, and it will be by drive-by or walkup. Because July 4 is on a Sunday this year, CrossNet will be closed on Monday, July 5, and the lunch pickup will be held on Tuesday, July 6. Additional pickup locations will be

Parents of students who do not have transportation to one of the pickup sites should contact their school principal or call CrossNet at 717-355-2454 for assistance with summer lunches. According to Marburger, the bag lunches will include a main food item, such as a sandwich or chicken nuggets, along with fruit, chips, a dessert item, and a beverage. Additional snack items will be included as well when available. The program is open to students ages 1 to 21 who are registered and attending school in the ELANCO School District and who are eligible for free and reduced-cost school lunches. Marburger noted that the organization is grateful to the community organizations that help the program with donations, including Grocery Outlet Bargain Market and

Musser Foundation Supports Families Of Children With Cancer
BY COURTNEY MENGEL
Before Project Lifesaver came to Lancaster County on Oct. 20, 2012, an elderly man wandered from his home during the winter. Much effort was put into finding him, but he was not located until a day or two later. He had passed away 250 feet behind his home. “If he would have had a working wristband from Project Lifesaver, we more than likely would have found him,” stated Pilot Club of See Project Lifesaver pg 3

When Akron resident Jeff Musser was first diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 1999 at the age of 42, doctors prescribed several months of chemotherapy with the possibility of a bone marrow transplant following remission. “At that time, insurance didn’t cover bone marrow transplants,” recalled Musser. “A bunch of my friends got together, and they raised about $35,000 for me.”

After Musser underwent 28 months of chemotherapy, doctors at The Johns Hopkins Hospital decided not to perform the bone marrow transplant. “When I got well after two years, I had $35,000,” said Musser, who also had a heightened awareness of the situations faced by the families of children with the same type of cancer he had. “My cancer was a childhood leukemia,” he said. “For kids it’s 80% curable, but for adults it’s 20% curable.”

United Veterans Council Slates Memorial Day Pilgrimage
GARDEN SPOT EDITION
BY ANN MEAD ASH
The cancellation of last year’s Memorial Day Pilgrimage, a local tradition, was heartbreaking for organizers Alan Noll and Mike Martin. So heartbreaking in fact, that a small delegation representing the United Veterans Council of New Holland went forth to the locations reading a prayer and observing a moment of silence. “This started in 1922,” said Noll. “It’s our 99th year (in 2021),” added Martin, president of the United Veterans Council, who added that this year “everything is back to normal.” This year’s pilgrimage will be held on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31, with members of the United Veterans Council, which includes representatives from the New Holland American Legion, the New Holland AMVETS, and the New Holland Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), organizing the event. Those joining in the pilgrimage are invited to gather at the American Legion Hall Post 662, located at 35 S. Hoover Ave., New Holland, at 6:30 a.m. The United Veterans Council will be joined by representa-

Congratulations Dr. Charles JangDhari for 40 Years in Practice Serving our Community & the World!
Although the 2020 Occupational Development Center (ODC) Food Truck Fest at Stauffer Park had to be canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, Ken Mueller, public relations and development manager for ODC, remembers the 2019 event vividly. “We did well,” recalled Mueller. “More than 3,000 people (attended), and many trucks sold out of food. We had perfect weather, and everything fell into place.” Mueller is hoping for a similar expe-
rience for this year’s third annual Food Truck Fest, which will be held on Saturday, June 5, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Stauffer Park, 1241 Lititz Pike, Lancaster. Mueller noted that the partnership between ODC and the Manheim Township Recreation Commission has worked well. Keeping in mind the safety of all in attendance, he noted that COVID-19 restrictions in place at that time will be observed with regard to masks, social distancing, and crowd size. Mueller noted, however, that with the large outdoor space and the number of hours the event will be

and at St. Stephen Reformed Church at 11:30 a.m. The churches are located adjacent to each other in downtown New Holland. The group holds a short ceremony at the grave of the last veteran buried at each site. If family members of that veteran are present, they are given a geranium to place on the grave as part of the ceremony, which involves rifle fire and the playing of taps. The veterans’ delegation will meet at 11:50 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial, located at the corner of
East Jackson Street and South Kinzer Avenue, for a brief ceremony. At noon, the group will join the band in the park to hear a presentation by Larry Alexander, retired journalist and military historian. Both Noll and Martin expressed gratitude for being able to hold the event again. Members of the United Veterans Council would like to see younger veterans involved in helping to preserve the tradition of the pilgrimage. Veterans who would like to participate may call Chet Gordon at 717-371-2042.

tives of local organizations, including the Sons of the American Legion, the Legion Riders, and musicians from the New Holland Band. Veterans living in the area are invited to join the delegation and take part in the event. The public is also encouraged to attend each ceremony. As in the past, the delegation will visit area cemeteries, beginning with Ranck’s United Methodist Church at 7 a.m., followed by Cedar Grove Presbyterian at 7:15 a.m. and Bridgeville Evangelical Congregational Church at 7:30 a.m. From Bridgeville, the group will journey to Weaverland Mennonite Church at 7:45 a.m., Bowmansville Memorial Park at 8:15 a.m., and St. John’s Center Lutheran Church at 9 a.m. The group plans to arrive at Terre Hill Memorial Park at 9:15 a.m., followed by Voganville Cemetery at 10 a.m. The pilgrimage will continue to Groffdale Cemetery by 10:20 a.m. and Zeltenreich Reformed Church at 10:40 a.m. The group is scheduled to reach the Evangelical United Methodist Church in New Holland at 11:05 a.m. The final two ceremonies will take place at Trinity Lutheran Church at 11:20 a.m.

held, crowd size should not be an issue. “We will have a sanitation station for handwashing and hand sanitizing,” noted Mueller. Organizers have planned to have up to 15 food trucks offering a variety of ethnic food items to attendees. Among the many genres that will be offered will be Middle Eastern, Mexican, and Mediterranean, and soul food. “We will have barbecued smoked meats, cheesesteak sausage fries, loaded hot dogs, and Nashville hot chicken sandwiches,” said Mueller. He listed cookie dough, milkshakes, funnel cake, popcorn, cotton candy, and waffles and ice cream among the
desserts. Mueller added that he is careful not to duplicate a type of food. ODC has partnered with a coffee company to create their own brand, and they will sell coffee at the fest. Local radio personality Dennis Mitchell will provide musical entertainment at the event. “People are less likely to crowd around a (disc jockey) than a band,” said Mueller. “We want to be careful.” Prizes and giveaways will be part of the event, and this year, a mobile automated teller machine will be located on site. In addition, the Lancaster SPCA will bring dogs that are available for adoption to the fest. ODC, located at 640 Martha Ave., Lancaster, has been helping individuals with developmental disabilities gain the skills to do productive work for more than 70 years. During 2020, Mueller said, the organization shut its doors from March 13 until Sept. 14, opening on a smaller scale until close to Thanksgiving and then closing again until early March 2021. Musser Foundation from pg 1 Larry Shirk, who helps the organization fundraise, said that the hospital social workers who contact Musser with information about families that need help are crucial to the system. Musser contacts referred families by phone when he is allowed and then sends requests to the organization’s six-member board. Larry’s wife, Judi, acts as administrator, getting checks to families in need. Over the last year or so, communication between Musser, board members, and the Shirks has been done electronically so the work of the foundation could continue. “After this year, we will have given out $2 million,” said Musser, who noted that donations were down significantly in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions. “The best way to help is to visit our website and donate money,” shared Musser, adding that the organization is happy to accept checks. He pointed out that administrative costs are negligible. “We don’t take any costs out,” he said. “If you give us $100, (that) $100 goes to the families.” Readers who would like to know more about the organization and its work may visit https://jeffmusserfoundation.org / or call 717-673-6333.

Lancaster member Cathy Cieslinski. “Project Lifesaver is all about bringing your loved ones home, and we saw a need in our county. Implementing this program in our county was important to our club.” Project Lifesaver is a search-andrescue program to locate at-risk individuals who wander. Its mission is to use state-of-the-art technology in assisting those who care for individuals with Alzheimer’s, dementia, autism, developmental disorders, Down syndrome, and other brainrelated challenges across the United States. According to Project Lifesaver’s data, in over 3,400 searches, Project Lifesaver has achieved a 100% success rate on an average of less than 30 minutes. Pilot Club has partnered with 18 municipalities to bring Project Lifesaver to Lancaster County. Lt. Jennifer Brubaker from East Hempfield Township Police Department was one of the first police officers to receive training. “The equipment took time to work with and feel comfortable using,” said Brubaker. “In a moment where lives are at stake, you don’t want to use equipment that you need to think much about operating. You want to get right to work and get moving with it.” Brubaker said she decided to receive training because
Police officers keep profiles on every individual enrolled. “We have these on hand so officers are aware of what the person looks like, what they will possibly wander to, what their disabilities include, and so on,” noted Brubaker. “Sometimes, we will meet individuals enrolled in the program, specifically children, to establish a friendship with them so that in the event of an emergency, they won’t be afraid of us. We want people to see us and know that we mean safety.” Individuals with an official diagnosis can enroll in Project Lifesaver. To request an application for Project Lifesaver, contact Cieslinski at 717572-2682. The Pilot Club welcomes new members. she has two autistic goddaughters, so she saw value in the program. Project Lifesaver participants wear a personalized transmitter 24/7 on their wrist or ankle that emits a tracking signal on FM radio frequency. When a caregiver calls 911 and reports that a participant has wandered, a search team triangulates the area and uses a receiver to locate the individual through his or her transmitter. “People should enroll in the program because, although this won’t keep loved ones from wandering, it will serve as a safety net,” explained Cieslinski. “If they wander, this will give us a fighting chance to find them as opposed to find- Police officers use a receiver to ing that needle in a locate individuals through their transmitter. haystack.”
Reamstown Plans Holiday Service The annual Reamstown community Memorial Day service will be held on Sunday, May 30, at 4:30 p.m. The service will take place at the War Memorial in Reamstown Community Park, 23 E. Church St., Reamstown. This tradition exists to remember and honor all those who have given their lives in military service. Daniel Burton, a former member of the U.S. Marine Reserve and Pennsylvania Army National Guard, will present remarks, and wreaths will be laid on the war memorials for each era. Families are encouraged to attend, and they should bring lawn chairs.
Church Posts Worship Services Peace United Church of Christ, 37 E. Swartzville Road, Denver, will offer a contemporary service each Sunday at 8:30 a.m. The services will be led by the Rev. Although the high cure rate is good news for families whose children are diagnosed with the disease, Musser saw the toll it took on parents. “I was receiving a lot of my chemo with kids and their parents and hearing about how they were trying to make ends meet,” he said, adding that often one parent stops working to care for the child. “A lightbulb went off, and I thought, ‘I will use this $35,000 for that.’” Because the initial funds were raised by friends of Musser who held a golf tournament, he decided to hold another. This year, the foundation will hold its 20th golf tournament at Foxchase Golf Club on Wednesday, June 23. A fundraising Cadillac dinner will be held at the Lancaster Country Club on Friday, Sept. 24. In 2001, the Jeff Musser Foundation became an official nonprofit. Working with social workers at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Penn State Hershey, and Nemours in Wilmington, Del., the organization works to alleviate financial obligations that can become burdensome. “We try to keep (the family) in their home, so we make mortgage payments, rents, utilities, and car payments,” said Musser.

The five-stop bike tour will include the Jacob Huber house, where Moravian leader Count Zinzendorf tried to unite all Pennsylvania Germans through his preaching. Another stop focuses on the Hess Homestead, which dates to 1734. Kids, get ready for “a week of inspiration and perspiration.” That’s how the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) describes Power Camp, a coed four-day sports camp for children ages 8 to 12. The Lancaster FCA will host Power Camp at two locations this summer. From Monday, June 14, through Thursday, June 17, camp will be held at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland. Sport choices at the New Holland camp are basketball, field hockey, soccer, baseball or lacrosse. Camp will also be held from Monday, June 21, through Thursday, June 24, at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road. Sport choices in Manheim are basketball, volleyball, soccer or baseball. Each camp will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and lunch will be provided.
“It’s a great camp for kids to try a sport for the first time, under the supervision of quality coaches,” said Diana Roth, area representative for FCA. “You don’t have to be the best athlete or be super competitive. It’s just a way to try a sport and have fun.” This is the third year the camp will be offered in New Holland and the first year for the camp in Manheim. “Our goal is to eventually have four Power Camps at different regions in the county,” Roth noted. Christianity is the focus of the camp, which includes worship time as well as devotions. This year’s camp theme is ‘Pursue,’ which comes from 1 Timothy and encourages fleeing from evil to pursue a godly lifestyle. “It’s a fun-filled camp,” Roth remarked, adding that whole-group friendly competitions in things like

Power Camp will offer a variety of sports for boys and girls ages 8 to 12.
Minute to Win It games and Dance Dance Revolution are featured, along with guest speakers. The camp also has an outreach component. “We ask the girls and boys to bring in coins, and it’s a competition to see who can bring in the most to raise money for our partnerships in Southeast Asia,” she explained. Founded in 1954, FCA has a goal of seeing the world transformed by Christ through the work of coaches and athletes. In the four years since FCA came to Lancaster County, the group has created huddles led by students at schools throughout the region, including Garden Spot, Pequea Valley, Penn Manor and Manheim Central. “I’ve seen at Pequea Valley the growth that occurs because the huddles are student-led, versus me coming in as an adult,” said Adam Burns, area representative for FCA. “It’s inspiring watching them encourage and equip their fellow students.” Burns said one of the best things about Power Camp has been the lasting impact it’s had on campers. “Many of the campers from our first camp have now become huddle leaders,” he stated. “I’ve had campers who, as soon as camp ends, say, ‘We can’t wait to sign up for next year.’” For more information on Power Camp or to register, visit https:// lancasterfca.org/camp-2.
