Honor And Tradition Garden Spot Plans Commencement Exercises By Ann Mead Ash
A letter to parents and guardians of members of the Garden Spot High School (GSHS) Class of 2020, dated April 29, acknowledged the challenges of the school year, which ended in March under COVID-19 restrictions. The letter, which was written by Dr. Matt Sanger, secondary campus principal for grades seven to 12, also expressed hope, pointing out the “unique opportunities presented to members of the class. Sanger’s letter said that, working with a team of staff members and utilizing student input, the ELANCO School District had devised a plan that would both honor and celebrate the GSHS Class of 2020. “We think it’s important, as a rite of passage, to allow our students to experience that walk across the stage and receive their diplomas, said Sanger. “That’s very important. We are trying to
give (students and families) a commencement ceremony that is as traditional and normal as possible. In accordance with the plan, Class of 2020 members and their families came to the school by appointment during the week of May 11. Each student walked across the stage as his or her name was called to pick up a diploma while being videotaped. Speeches by Dr. Bob Hollister, superintendent of ELANCO, and Sanger were recorded, as were speeches by Hannah Hostetler and Deanna Phillips, who were chosen to speak by a panel of GSHS staff members. Hannah of Bowmansville is the daughter of Stacey and Mark McCreary and Justin and Valerie Hostetler. She has titled her speech “To Those Who Shaped Our Lives. In the speech, she gives credit to teachers, parents, and others who have influenced students, saying, “You didn’t make it this far on your own. You’ve had 13 years’ worth of people that have surrounded you and pushed you to this point. In the fall, Hannah plans to
Deanna Phillips attend Rochester Institute of Technology, where she will major in biochemistry with a focus on
Hannah Hostetler molecular biology. Deanna is the daughter of Todd and Rose See Garden Spot pg 2
Sweet Pea Plants Virtual Garden More than 10 years ago, Stephanie Paige Cole, founder of Sweet Pea Project, an organization that offers comfort and support to families that have experienced the death of a baby, and her board members began holding a Sisters and Brothers Picnic for children who had a sibling who was lost
during pregnancy or infancy. This year’s event was to be held on Saturday, June 6, at Dutch Wonderland. When the picnic was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, Cole wanted to re-create a part of the picnic in time for Mother’s Day, which was held on May 10. A special part of the picnic is a chance to visit an area inside Dutch Wonderland that has been designated as a permanent Sweet Pea Project Remembrance Garden. “It has a big tree and hundreds of flowers, and our logo and sign is there, said Cole, who noted that she is continually amazed at how the siblings flock to the garden during the picnic. “There’s pizza, ice cream, and roller coasters, and these (siblings) stop in the middle of this super fun day to plant a flower, she said. “It has been the most See Sweet Pea pg 3
Sweet Pea Project, an organization that offers comfort and support to families that have experienced the death of a baby, has created a virtual flower garden that mothers and other family members may use to honor the child they lost. Although the virtual garden was created for Mother’s Day, it will be available into the future for those who would like to dedicate a flower to their child.
New Director Hopes To Speak At Churches By Ann Mead Ash
In 2018, Lititz resident Jennifer Martin began sharing her testimony in local churches. At New Life Fellowship in Ephrata, her testimony was recorded, and her parents, Jay and Rosene Hurst, showed the tape to their friends Drew and Cindy Metcalf, founders of We Help Children, a ministry with workers in several locations, including the Guatemala and the U.S. The organization works with children in orphanages and trains workers who serve in orphanages, among other efforts on behalf of traumatized children. Drew and Cindy immediately noticed a correlation between Jennifer’s testimony and the children they help. They also saw her desire to help children who have suffered emotional traumas. “Drew felt my story tied in well with what they do, said Jennifer. In the summer of 2018, Drew approached Jennifer about becoming the U.S. director for the ministry. Jennifer was expecting See New Director pg 2

Jennifer’s work involves continuing to share her testimony, and she looks forward to speaking in area churches about her life and the mission of We Help Children. “A life that I thought was destroyed when I was a teenager God has restored, and He speaks
through me,” said Jennifer, who noted that she is ready to work on building relationships between the ministry and local churches. She said We Help Children would especially like to build relationships with Spanish churches. She will also work to help to organize

fundraisers, and she will visit Guatemala twice a year. Jennifer is a certified medical assistant who has worked at Barshinger Cancer Center in Lancaster. Her connections to Guatemala began in her childhood. “I grew up going to Guatemala,” she recalled, noting that she has been there 10 times. “When I was 10, (my family) moved to Guatemala for a summer,” said Jennifer, who explained that her father was a part-time missionary when she was a child. “(Guatemala is) where my heart is.” Jennifer has also done mission work in Haiti. “I (was in) Haiti … when I was 18 for a couple months,” she said. “I loved it there. I love mission work.” In 2017, Jennifer traveled to Guatemala with Donna Delp, a member of the We Help Children board, who has her own medicalbased ministry called Impacting One Life at a Time. Jennifer was there to work alongside Donna for a week as a medical assistant. During that visit, Jennifer met a teenage girl, and the two began talking through a cellphone translator app. “She had a story similar to mine, which included sexual abuse and going through a trying time of dealing with the emotions that come along with that,” said Jennifer. “We had a really deep conversation, and I shared my faith and how I came to faith.” Jennifer referred to the experience as getting a taste of what the Metcalfs do to help children. “My passion for (helping children) was lit,” she recalled. According to Jennifer, it was that encounter that made her aware of her connection to the mission of We Help Children. “I think that was a door that opened in my heart,” said Jennifer. “By sharing my testimony and raising support, (I can help them with) what they do in Guatemala (from) here (in the U.S.),” she added. Readers who are interested in asking Jennifer to speak at their church may email jennrmartin17@gmail.com. More information about We Help Children may be found by visiting www.wehelpchildren.org.

The title of her speech is “What It Means to Embrace Who We Are.” In her speech, Deanna will reference the uniqueness of the current year. “2020 is a year to remember, let it also be the year we chose to live out our truths. To dance like no one’s watching. To unearth the genuine desires that lie within us,” she wrote. In the fall, Deanna plans to attend college. meaningful part of our picnic. To give bereaved mothers and their families an opportunity to join together in a similar and safe way, Sweet Pea created a virtual flower garden. “I thought we should try to create a sense of community and salvage that flower piece, said Cole, who noted that families do not forget the feeling of losing a child. She added that because of the quarantine, the spring of 2020 may have been even more difficult for those who lost a child. “Parents who (have lost a child) are already feeling isolated, and then they come to Mother’s Day, explained Cole. “The isolation was really piling up this year. The virtual flower garden, which can be reached on Facebook or Instagram using the hashtags #stillamothergarden and #sweetpeaproject, acknowledges bereaved mothers and honors the children they love and miss. “We are still their mothers. That deserves to be remembered and celebrated, wrote Cole in an invitation to mothers to take part. Those who participated

GAiN Announces Name Change Since 2005, Lancaster County residents have known Global Aid Network (GAiN) as more than a former fish hatchery. Over the decades, the 70,000-square-foot warehouse on Quarry Road in Mount Joy has become a place for volunteers to serve others as they prepare and pack humanitarian aid to go to people in more than 30 countries around the world. Recently GAiN in the United States, the humanitarian ministry of Cru, announced that the ministry changed its name to Unto. The name change came after two years of research, planning and prayer. This change will allow the ministry to more clearly convey its pursuit to serve people by relieving suffering, restoring dignity and revealing the eternal hope of Jesus. Unto will remain steadfast in its commitment to accelerate spiritual movements through humanitarian kindness, which helps Cru and its partners gain access, build credibility and increase effectiveness in ministry.
Unto’s Mount Joy warehouse, known as the Global Logistics Center (GLC), is an integral part of serving more than 2 million people each year. Expressing kindness to people around the world requires a process for transporting humanitarian aid to field partners so they can serve people by meeting their physical needs. Unto’s staff members, with the assistance of volunteers at the GLC, process, pack and ship humanitarian supplies to people around the world. The GLC will offer volunteer opportunities once social distancing protocols due to COVID-19 are lifted and activities resume. To learn more, readers may visit www.unto.com. For more than 25 years, Unto has leveraged strategic global partnerships and the service of volunteers to relieve suffering through humanitarian aid in more than 75 countries. Unto serves people around the world as part of Cru’s diverse, 190-country network.

The lab determines what, if anything, it bills the patient. Appointments are not needed for visits unrelated to COVID-19 testing. All Patient First centers have taken steps to provide a safe environment for patients and staff, including requiring all patients and staff to wear masks while inside the center, thoroughly disinfecting surfaces throughout the center at regular intervals, requiring frequent handwashing, and limiting visitors to only essential family members. To schedule an appointment at the Lancaster center, readers may call 717-925-2995. Testing is scheduled daily from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 to 6 p.m. All test samples are collected outside of the center. Patients may remain in their vehicles through the entire process. The staff member collecting samples is equipped with proper personal protective equipment (PPE), including an N95 mask, gloves, eye protection, and a gown. Samples are sent to a thirdparty reference lab for testing. Results are generally available in approximately two to five days and accessible on Patient First’s Patient Portal. If patients do not already have a Patient First Portal Account set up, they will receive a temporary code allowing them to create one when they arrive for testing. For most insured patients, there is no out-of-pocket expense for COVID-19 testing. The visit will be submitted to patients’

Organizations Receive Grants The Lancaster Cares COVID19 Response Fund has already generated more than $966,000 that will directly support neighbors with immediate needs. Launched jointly by the Lancaster County Community Foundation and United Way of Lancaster County, the fund will work through organizations that can turn donated dollars directly into help and provide food, housing and emerging critical needs for Lancaster residents. Dollars from Lancaster Cares are already at work through Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and LancCo MyHome. Each organization recently received an $80,000 grant to expand its capacity to support growing demands for food security and shelter needs. Lancaster Cares is making an initial investment from the fund of $80,000 each to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and LancCo MyHome. Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is actively partnering with 38 agencies and collaborating with Hunger Free Lancaster County to ensure that local families in the community are being served. Lancaster County Homeless Coalition is extending winter shelters in Elizabethtown, Columbia, and Lancaster city and providing quarantine locations for individuals in shelter as they become symptomatic and await COVID-19 testing. Major gifts from Rodgers & Associates, Truist Cares Fund, High Foundation, PPL Foundation, Altria, Arconic Foundation, Armstrong Flooring and more than 500 individuals and businesses joined the $250,000 lead gift from the foundation. Maxwell Presents Research Online The University of Mount Union, Alliance, Ohio, virtually hosted its 13th annual Student Celebration Honoring Our Latest Academic Research (SCHOLAR) Day on April 28. SCHOLAR Day is traditionally a campus-wide, daylong event filled with presentations showcasing academic excellence and scholarly research conducted by Mount Union students. With remote learning taking place as a result of COVID-19, students submitted video presentations and images of their research that could be viewed throughout the day on the Mount Union website and the institution’s social media channels. Brady Maxwell of Denver was selected for work on “Thermodynamic Analysis of a Jeep ‘Stroker’ Build,” a poster presentation, during Mount Union’s SCHOLAR Day. This year, 50 formal presentations and 50 posters were featured throughout the day. This event gives students opportunities to share their latest academic research with faculty, staff, students, family, friends, and the surrounding communities.
Logar Earns Distinction Kayla Logar of Denver earned the dean’s award with distinction for the fall 2019 semester at Colgate University, Hamilton, N.Y. Logar is a graduate of Cocalico High School. Students who receive a term grade point average of 3.6 or higher while completing at least three courses for a conventional letter grade earn this honor.

FIA Offers Opportunity To Support Relief Efforts soon be gone. I don’t know how we will survive,” a NiVan man speaking his native Bislama tongue told FIA missionary partners in the area. An estimated 80% to 90% of the villagers’ bamboo huts with grassthatched roofs were destroyed. There is little to no palm leaf left, and it will take two to three years to regrow. With no income to buy building supplies, the people are in dire need of shelter. “Thirty to forty of us women and children packed into a larger hut while the wind was pulling at the roof and sides and rain pounded through. The men ran outside and stood around the hut to hold
the roof on. I was scared we all would die,” shared a NiVan village woman, recalling her village’s harrowing tale of survival. Partnering with missionaries, national pastors, and workers in the region, FIA is raising funds to secure cyclone relief supplies for the villages of Suranda, Mataloi, and Valui. Food bundles of tin tuna, rice, and noodles feed a family of eight for a week, totaling less than $3.25 per person daily. Recovery bundles - consisting of nails, hammers, handsaws, shovels, machetes, and twine and averaging less than $5 per villager provide building supplies for an
Selin, a NiVan mother, and her children search for food in their village in the South Pacific island country of Vanuatu. The country was devastated by a recent cyclone, and Friends in Action is offering southcentral Pennsylvania residents an opportunity to support cyclone relief efforts.

While many local residents may be feeling the effects of staying home due to COVID-19 restrictions, Friends in Action (FIA), a nonprofit headquartered in Middletown, is offering an opportunity to have a global impact. Since 1992, FIA has used infrastructure projects as a platform to share the Gospel with unreached people groups in extremely remote areas. On April 6, Cyclone Harold, a Category 5 cyclone and the secondlargest storm in Vanuatu’s history, almost leveled the South Pacific island country. To the people in Vanuatu’s hundreds of NiVan villages, some of whom still wear leaves or
entire village to create new homes. “This effort is something everyone can take part in even from the safety of their couches at home. Every contribution will save lives,” said FIA executive director Tim Johnston, noting that this opportunity is also a way to reach the NiVan people with a tangible demonstration of God’s love. Readers’ donations will be matched up to $10,000 until Sunday, May 31, when given to FIA’s “Where Needed Most Fund” at www.fiaintl.org/donate.
