small town where the owner works behind the counter and you get oneon-one face time with them.” Glick was 11 when he and his family moved to The Willows development, but New Holland is where Glick feels most at home. “I love this town. This is my hometown,” said Glick, who believes his feelings are shared by many other area residents. “I know a lot of people who care about the community,” he said. Listing attributes of the borough comes easily to Glick. “We have a rich history and tradition in New Holland,” he said. “New Holland is a great place to live, work, and raise a family,” he said. “It was a great childhood (home) for me, and I want to continue to give that to my children.”

New Holland has retained a feeling of yesteryear, according to Glick. “The uniqueness of New Holland is that it still has that small-town feel in the 21st century,” he said. “There’s a friendliness (because) we are a community of neighbors. We know each other, and people look out for each other.”

New Holland borough council member Bryant Glick loves his town and would love Lancaster County residents to enjoy the many benefits offered there.

Barely 30-something, husband, father, and New Holland borough council member Bryant Glick sat down a while ago to talk about what he loves about the town he serves. Glick, who moved to the area from Gordonville in 2000, talked about the activities he would include if a friend from out of the area came to spend a day with him in New Holland. “I would start with the Kauffman Building and a visit to Lickity Split,” said Glick, noting that he would begin his friend’s tour of downtown with a short discussion of the historical aspects of the building. From there, Glick would take his friend on a short walk across Main Street to the Tannery Antiques, where he would introduce his friend to owners Linda Dibartolo and Bill Heagy. “It’s more than a flea market,” shared Glick, explaining that the couple buys and sells a variety of items that they ship countrywide. Glick pointed out the history of the building on the corner of Main and Railroad, stating that it was once the home of Rubinson’s Department Store. “That building is part of the history of our community,” he said. Moving away from Main Street,

Glick said the New Holland Community Memorial Park would be featured on his tour. “I would show (my friend) how big it is,” he said, adding that the playgrounds and the pitch and putt golf course would be highlights. “We would maybe play golf,” he noted. Back on Main Street and just around the corner from the park, Glick said he would take his friend to enjoy a cup at The Coffee Co., which was once Squireside and housed several businesses before that. As with the Kauffman and Rubinson’s buildings, Glick pointed out that the facilities are older, but have been revitalized and reused to create new businesses. “Businesses come and go, but these are people choosing to invest in New Holland,” he said. Glick said he would finish the day with a pie at Palermos Pizza and Italian Restaurant, which is found going west on Main Street. “Palermo’s pizza is made with tender loving care,” said Glick. “It’s a family-owned business.” That New Holland boasts a number of small businesses where the owner is regularly present means something to Glick. “When you go into businesses (in New Holland), you can feel the warmth,” he said. “It’s not corporate America. (Rather,) it’s a

This year, the foundation will hold its 20th golf tournament at Foxchase Golf Club on Wednesday, June 23. A fundraising Cadillac dinner will be held at the Lancaster Country Club on Friday, Sept. 24. Musser contacts referred families by phone when he is allowed and then sends requests to the organization’s six-member board. Larry’s wife, Judi, acts as administrator, getting checks to families in need. Over the last year or so, communication between Musser, board members, and the Shirks has been done electronically

“After this year, we will have given out $2 million,” said Musser, who noted that donations were down significantly in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions. “The best way to help is to visit our website and donate money,” shared Musser, adding that the organization is happy to accept checks. He pointed out that administrative costs are negligible. “We don’t take any costs out,” he said. “If you give us $100, (that) $100 goes to the families.” Readers who would like to know more about the organization and its work may visit https://jeffmusser foundation.org/ or call 717 -673-6333.

ODC Plans Third Food Truck Fest Local radio personality Dennis Mitchell will provide musical entertainment at the event. “People are less likely to crowd around a (disc jockey) than a band,” said Mueller. “We want to be careful.” Prizes and giveaways will be part of the event, and this year, a mobile automated teller machine will be located on site. In addition, the Lancaster SPCA will bring dogs that are available for adoption to the fest. ODC, located at 640 Martha Ave., Lancaster, has been helping individuals with developmental disabilities gain the skills to do productive work for more than 70 years. During 2020, Mueller said, the organization shut its doors from March 13 until Sept. 14, opening on a smaller scale until close to Thanksgiving and then closing again until early March 2021. Readers who would like to learn more may visit www.odcenter.org or https://odcenter.org/blog/food -truck or call 717-397-4269.

Although the 2020 Occupational Development Center (ODC) Food Truck Fest at Stauffer Park had to be canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, Ken Mueller, public relations and development manager for ODC, remembers the 2019 event vividly. “We did well,” recalled Mueller. “More than 3,000 people (attended), and many trucks sold out of food. We had perfect weather, and everything fell into place.” Mueller is hoping for a similar experience for this year’s third annual Food Truck Fest, which will be held on Saturday, June 5, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Stauffer Park, 1241 Lititz Pike, Lancaster. Mueller noted that the partnership between ODC and the Manheim Township Recreation Commission has worked well. Keeping in mind the safety of all in attendance, he noted that COVID-19 restrictions in place at that time will be observed

with regard to masks, social distancing, and crowd size. Mueller noted, however, that with the large outdoor space and the number of hours the event will be held, crowd size should not be an issue. “We will have a sanitation station for handwashing and hand sanitizing,” noted Mueller. Organizers have planned to have up to 15 food trucks offering a variety of ethnic food items to attendees. Among the many genres that will be offered will be Middle Eastern, Mexican, and Mediterranean, and soul food. “We will have barbecued smoked meats, cheesesteak sausage fries, loaded hot dogs, and Nashville hot chicken sandwiches,” said Mueller. He listed cookie dough, milkshakes, funnel cake, popcorn, cotton candy, and waffles and ice cream among the desserts. Mueller added that he is careful not to duplicate a type of food. ODC has partnered with a coffee company to create their own brand, and they will sell coffee at the fest.

that first one.” The Blazers’ five service errors in the first set helped Garden Spot build momentum. The Spartans, during one stretch, went on an 11-2 run, building an 18-5 lead. Scoring on a Laine King kill early in the second set, the Spartans got on the board. However, they found themselves in a back-and-forth contest until it was tied 9-9. They scored seven straight points from that juncture, including help from King and Chandler Xiong. A Jordan Martin kill, a Griffin Witmer ace and a beautifully placed ball in the corner of the Blazers’ side of the court, followed by a King block helped build a 22-13 lead. King, who also had eight digs, three blocks and pair of service aces,

Musical entertainment at the cruise will be provided by The Nomads. Food trucks located on-site will offer grilled meats, including hamburgers, as well as french fries and ice cream treats for purchase. Funds raised by the event will benefit GSFR, an all-volunteer firefighting and rescue force serving the greater New Holland area. GSFR is ready to welcome more volunteers. Those who are interested in volunteering may come to the cruise and talk to a GSFR member. Readers who have questions about the car cruise may call 717940-8672. More information about the event may be found by searching for “Garden Spot Fire Rescue (GSFR39)” on Facebook.

Future from pg 1 important for everyone to know and realize that we will be the generation who will never give up as easily as others think.” Freed is currently attending the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center at the Public Safety Training Center for the Protective Services Academy, where she is training to become a licensed EMT. Following graduation, she will enroll in the Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences paramedic program. Freed said she is glad she attended Garden Spot because the school gave her a chance to “shine.” “I have a lot of support in the community, which has helped me mentally, emotionally, and physically. As I leave, I hope to leave a mark on (the school as it has) on me,” she shared. Kha has dubbed her speech “It’s a Great Day to Be a Spartan,” and it

will focus on the importance of relationships. “Being at the school isn’t about the big events like football games; it’s about the people who add meaning to our lives,” explained Kha. “It’s a great day to be a Spartan because of teachers who spend time learning how to work Zoom and things like that,” she said, adding that her thoughts were inspired by the isolation caused by COVID-19 restrictions over the last year. In the fall, Kha will attend Kutztown University to pursue a degree in early childhood education. She said she has appreciated her time at GSHS because of the people she has encountered there. “I have been able to build relationships and go through experiences that have helped me grow as an individual,” she said.

“We offer the boys and girls a positive experience, encouragement, a challenge, goal setting, mentoring and spiritual growth,” Lee explained. “Because our program includes all of that, there’s no room left for bullying or people making fun of each other. … We don’t have kids tearing each other down. We like to say we find out what the teens are doing right, and we build on that.” Lifecycles began its current season on April 19 and is looking for more riders as well as more volunteers. Currently, the group has a girls’ team that rides on Mondays in Lititz and three boys’ teams - one in Marietta on Tuesdays, one in Landisville on Thursdays and another in New Holland also on Thursdays. The group also rides on two Saturdays a month. “This is 100% free for participants,” Lee noted. “There is never any cost for the riders. We have bikes, helmets and food for them. We provide a meal after each ride.” The organization is also looking for more volunteers. “If you would enjoy investing in a teenager, there are teenagers who need to have the encouragement and the example you can set,” he stated. “If you enjoy riding, whether you’re young or old, slow or fast, there’s a ride group waiting for you.” The group is also looking for volunteers to help serve meals or sign in participants at weekly rides. Lee emphasized that Lifecycles is open to any youths in the county, and no experience with bike riding is necessary. “We don’t have tryouts,” he remarked. “If you show up at Lifecycles, we believe you’re supposed to be there.” Along with weekly rides, Lifecycle members have the opportunity to participate in longer challenges as well. A group of eight boys and five leaders will ride from the coast of Oregon to the

coast of Delaware between Thursday, June 10, and Sunday, Aug. 8, covering 3,600 miles. Close to 50 others will participate in one of three weeklong challenge rides from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., later this summer. Lee noted that he’s been impressed with the impact leaders have made on the riders and with the way the youths have responded to the program. “For three hours on one of those evenings, or five hours on a Saturday, we pry the phones out of the teens’ fingers, and they

Cruisin’ from pg 1 “Main Street will be closed from Kinzer to Brimmer,” said Harnish, who hopes to see a few hundred vintage and modern vehicles join in. “If it has wheels and a motor, it’s welcome,” said Harnish. The cruise is open to cars, motorcycles, tractors, and more. There is no preregistration for the event, as registration will only be available on June 13. A cruise through town will be part of the event. Harnish noted that the organization will follow any CDC guidelines in place at that time with regard to COVID-19. During the car show portion, local firefighters will select vehicles to receive awards in several categories, including firefighters’ choice, chief’s choice, best motor, and best paint. Contests involving cars will include a muffler rap contest. Perks for those who register vehicles will include T-shirts to the owners of the first 50 vehicles and dash plaques to the first 100 owners. Par-

Ronks Road, Bird-in-Hand. Wissing shared that pizza and wings will be available on the night of June 24. King noted that the auction blocks will feature antiques and collectibles, crafts, plant nursery items, flowers, small tack, and tools, along with field rows.

Wissing pointed out that field row items are often unusual or unique. “(Items) could be equipment, old windows, old furniture. There are major treasures sometimes like iron statues and anvils,” she stated, adding that old Salvation Army uniforms have been among the finds. King said the June 25 auction will begin with antiques, collectibles, and field row items. He noted that tack, other horse-related items, and plant nursery items like

flowers and shrubbery will also be sold. “Scattered throughout the day will be crafts, mini horses and ponies, furniture, and carriages,” he said. Wissing noted that the furniture that goes up for bids often includes a mix of old and new items and that often larger donated items are featured. “If people keep some items aside while they’re spring cleaning and bring them to the sale, that would be wonderful,” said Wissing. Past auctions have featured up to 150 carriages ranging from Amish buggies to pleasure carriages, including antique carriages from the 1890s. Food that will be available for purchase on June 25 will include sub sandwiches, ham and cheese sandwiches, bloomin’ onions, and chicken barbecue. King noted that doughnuts and soft pretzels will be made fresh on site, along with homemade ice cream produced using hitand-miss engines. Iced tea and lemonade will also be sold. Coming off a year when fundraisers were canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, organizers are hoping that the auction will be well attended, but they are also looking forward to bringing the community together. Wissing noted that 400 volunteers help to make the sale happen. She credited King and the other managers of the event with creating a strong structure that has organized successful events for the fire company since 2009. flowers and shrubbery will also be sold. Readers who have questions about the event may call 717-945-4945.
