Summer Of Possibility Library To Offer Reading Challenge And More BY ANN MEAD ASH

he ELANCO Library Summer Reading Program kicked off with a Dive into Summer celebration on June 4 at the library, 11 Chestnut Drive, New Holland. The event included live music by the New Holland Brass, STEM activities, refreshments, and miniature horses. “We wanted to start out with a big, fun community event that included signing up for the reading challenge,” said library director Anna D’Agostino. The kickoff was meant to give area children and adults a taste of the many programs and activities organizers have lined up for the summer months. Jen Watson, assistant director and youth services coordinator, said that the reading program, which is open to adults as well as children, will continue through Saturday, Aug. 13. “The idea is to encourage kids to read as much as possible and really get them engaged in reading,” she explained. “One way we are doing that is offering a ton of programs based on the (Library System of Lancaster County) theme ‘Oceans of Pos-

very excited about it.” Those who wish to take part in the reading challenge may create a paper log to record their reading adventures or create an online reading log through www.elancolibrary.org. Watson noted that participants will receive a small prize for signing up and a packet of coupons from the Lancaster County Library System upon completion of their reading journey. “They will also be able to choose a small prize from the treasure chest, and they will be entered in a drawing to win a large prize at the end of the summer,” said Watson, who noted that regularly scheduled activities, such as Toddler Thursdays and Teen Tuesdays, will continue throughout the summer. D’Agostino pointed out that adults can participate in the reading challenge, as well. “Among prizes for adults is a chance to win a pack of four tickets to Longwood Gardens and gift cards to New Holland Coffee Company,” she said, noting that programs for adults will include “Medicare 101” and “The Nuts and Bolts of Estate Planning.”

The Return Of Relay

Relay For Life Lancaster will return at noon on June 10, with activities scheduled through noon on June 11.

In 2020, the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) Lancaster Relay For Life event was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions. Last year, Relay For Life of Lancaster County held an abbreviated event. “Everyone was so excited to be in each other’s presence and to be able to be on the track,” recalled Stephanie Delp, ACS senior development manager. “That momentum has carried us forward.” See Relay For Life pg 4

Among the many programs she has planned is one about prehistoric oceans on Monday, June 13, at 1 p.m., and a shark dissection for teens and adults on Thursday, July 28, at 6 p.m. “We will do seashell painting (Friday, Aug. 5 at 3 p.m.) and watercolors (Saturday, Aug. 6, at 11 a.m.),” noted Watson. On Monday, July 11, at 1:30 p.m., illusionist Mike Rose will present “H2 Oh!” a magic show based on a water theme. In addition, representatives of Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will bring macroinvertebrates for participatns to study, while Parks and Recreation staff members talk about stream health when they present Life in the Water on Friday, July 15, at 1 p.m. Those who enjoy art may want to take part in an animation workshop with Keville Bowen on Monday, June 27, at 1:30 p.m. “We are hoping 1,000 kids will take part in the Summer Reading Program,” said Watson. “It should be a very busy summer, and we are

The 31st annual Lancaster County Benefit Auction will take place on Saturday, June 18, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Leola Produce Auction, 135 Brethren Church Road, Leola. Admission will be free to the public, and a wide variety of items will be up for bids, including handmade quilts, carriages, household furniture, hardware, outdoor furniture, shrubbery, plants, gift baskets, and toys. “There’s a lot to enjoy at the annual auction,” said Cullen. “What I’m most looking forward to is just seeing so many community members come together in support of the Clinic for Special Children’s mission. While perusing the auction items, attendees can also purchase food, such as freshly made doughnuts, chicken barbecue, whoopie pies, a salad bar, ice cream, and soft pretzels. There will also be a silent auction. “When you’re at the auction and you’re bidding and purchasing food, know that you’re supporting a great cause that’s helping children and adults with complex medical needs and rare genetic disorders access the care that they really need,” stated Cullen.” For details about the clinic’s 2022 benefit auctions throughout the country, visit www.clinicauctions.org or call 717-687-9407. Relay For Life from pg 1 For 2022, Relay is back, and to celebrate, organizers are inviting area residents to come enjoy the carnival-style event they have planned. Activities will begin at noon on Friday, June 10, and conclude at noon on Saturday, June 11. As in the past, teams will gather at Conestoga Valley High School, 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, forming a 50-team tent city, as each team keeps at least one member walking the school track throughout the 24-hour period. The event is presented by Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health. In keeping with the carnival theme, planners will have tents, stilt walkers, clowns, a

magician, face painters, and balloon artists at the location, and a gap in the center of the tent city will create a sort of midway where relay teams will have carnival games set up. Sharon Groff of the Misfits on a Mission team emphasized that Lancaster County residents are welcome to join in the activities. “We want people to know they don’t have to be on a team or be a cancer survivor (to take part),” she said. “Anyone can come. Bring the kids out.” Indeed, Delp reported that children’s activities will be held during both days. Traditional Relay activities will also be observed, including the survivor’s ceremony at 4

p.m. on June 10 and the luminaria ceremony at dusk that same evening. At 7 p.m. on June 10, the annual cake auction will be held. Delp noted that the auction, which features James Fishel as auctioneer, is not limited to cakes. “Dotty Moser’s famous fudge has brought over $300 at auction,”she said. On the morning of June 11, all survivors and caregivers are invited to a free breakfast provided by the Breakfast Crew beginning at 8 a.m. KPETS will be on-site to promote the ACS Bark For Life event later this year. The 2022 honorary survivor will be Justin Shiffer, and the honorary caregiver will be the infusion team at Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute. Readers who would like to learn more about Relay For Life Lancaster may visit www.relayforlife.org/lancaster or call 800-227-2345.

Haydn’s “The Creation” Set The Lancaster Symphony Chorus will perform Haydn’s oratorio “The Creation” at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 10, and at 3 and 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 11. Some Old … Some New … All Fun! As with many festivities, Heritage Days, a two-day celebration held at the Intercourse Community Park, skipped 2020 and held a somewhat abbreviated event in 2021. For 2022, Heritage Days organizers are pulling out the stops by bringing back traditional activities

and mixing them with new ones. “A lot of it’s similar, but there are a few new things,” said organizer Mike Sensenig. “We get great sponsorship from the businesses, so almost everything can be free.” This year’s Heritage Days celebration will be held in the park, 3730 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gordonville, on Friday, June 17, and Saturday, June 18. On June 17, activities will begin at 5 p.m., and on June

18, the Intercourse Fire Company pancake and sausage breakfast will kick off the day at 6:30 a.m. One first-time activity that Sensenig pointed out is free axe throwing, which will be held on June 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. and June 18 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. “That’s a new thing that’s kind of cool,” said Sensenig, who also noted that the mechanical bull ride, which was new in 2021, will return on June 18 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Other events of note on June 17 include the spelling bee for children at 6:30 p.m. and the Intercourse Heritage Trivia Contest for cash and prizes at 7:30 p.m. “There will be some pretty good prizes for that, and it will be interesting to see what people know,” said Sensenig. The traditional Heritage display will be set up inside the

pavilion. “This year, we added a board from a collection of old photos from students at the one-room schoolhouses,” said Sensenig, who said the photos are dated from 1898 to the 1940s. “A lot of them have the names of the kids, so you can look up a family member by number,” explained Sensenig, who noted that area residents may be inter-

ested in finding photos of grandparents or great-grandparents. “It’s pretty cool,” he said. According to Sensenig, the photos were gathered for a one-room schoolhouse reunion held in the 1980s and provided for Heritage Days by Elmer Zimmerman. On June 18, activities will include the traditional volleyball tournament from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Teams may sign up at See Fun pg 8

According to organizers, highlights of this year’s auction will include items such as a carriage, a volleyball set, a grill, a Breeo fire pit, a flag croquet set, and a scooter. Large specialty items will be sold at 6 p.m. Swing sets and sheds will be sold, and a 26by-28-foot garage, built on the highest bidder’s site, will go up for auction. The building will have a concrete floor, two garage doors, and an attic with stairs. Caring Hearts has a special connection to the auction because cross-stitched quilts made there will be sold at 4 p.m. Head teacher Anna Stoltzfus explained that the quilts are produced by having the female participants cross stitch items. “One of the mothers puts (the pieces) together, and we have it in a frame at the shop, and then mothers and friends come and quilt it,” said Stoltzfus of the process. Food that will be available for purchase at the auction includes breakfast items such as egg sandwiches, doughnuts, breakfast logs, and coffee. Lunch items will include cheesesteak sandwiches, barbecued chicken and ribs, sub sandwiches, ham and cheese sandwiches, fried shrimp,

salad, fruit cups, french fries, blooming onions, and soft pretzels. The list of beverages offered will include smoothies and iced coffee. Ice cream, fry pies, and baked goods will be on the dessert menu. Food may be eaten on-site or taken out, and a drive-through food pickup will be available. The centers offer a variety of activities for participants. Stoltzfus said the women are at Caring Hearts on Mondays and Wednesdays and that she has three helpers. On Tuesdays, male participants are at the center with a male teacher and aides. Stoltzfus opens the day with devotions, including hymns and a Bible study. Following devotions, the group members work on beaded items, including keychains and pacifier straps, as well as doll toys and items for baby gifts. Close to the middle of the day, they break for lunch, which each participant brings from home. After lunch, they work on more projects until it is time to go home. Those who would like to donate items to the sale may call 717-768-8497, 717-3542380, or 717-768-7417. On the day of the sale, individuals with questions may call 717-455-3987.

Fun from pg 7 https://lancastertournaments .com/upcoming-events. The Factory Ministries will oversee a cornhole tournament beginning at 10 a.m. Those wishing to participate may register at www.thefactoryministries.com by clicking on the “Registration” tab. Special activities for children will begin at noon on June 18 with the candy drop from a helicopter. At 12:30 p.m., Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary will present a program, followed at 1:15

p.m. by the DKers, a local juggling team, and Ryan & Friends at 2 p.m. The Churchmen will return for a concert on June 18 at 6:30 p.m. The concert will be followed by a fireworks display. “It’s a great chance to get the community together,” said Sensenig. Readers who would like to learn more may visit www.intercourseheritage days.com. Those with specific questions, may call 717-768-8585.
