Food may be eaten on-site or taken out. Mervin, age 20, is happy to chat with visitors to the center. Asked what his favorite activity is, he walks to a kiosk in the Sunny Sunbeam Gift Shop to point out the key chains, crocheted frogs, and rolled-candy dolls he has helped to assemble. The students also assemble gift baskets to sell. Hygiene kits are assembled for Mennonite Central Committee, and newspaper is torn up to create animal bedding. Sadie, who is one of the teachers, said that making gift items and other productive tasks is just one of the activities students take part in at the center from 9 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. each day they attend. During news time, any of the students can share news from home, Sadie noted, adding that students often choose to tell about new babies and new puppies. Lessons, which include reading, flash cards, telling time, memory verses, money, and German, are also on the agenda to help students retain what they learned at school. Students bring their lunch two days a week, but one day a week a teacher makes lunch, and students are welcome to bring desserts or other courses. “The children love to bring things along,” said Sadie. The center also provides haystack meals similar to taco salads - for families and friends who have an interest in helping students with special needs. On nice days, lunch may be eaten outside in a fenced yard behind the center. Students take turns helping to mow the grass and tending the flower beds in the yard, tasks Sadie noted that they enjoy. Sadie began working with the children at Penn Johns Sunbeam when she was asked to fill in for another teacher for a year. She spent three years there, and she has been at Sunny Sunbeam for eight years now. “I am so blessed. I just love (my work with the students),” she said. Community from pg 1 Three local legislators visited Friendship Community’s Meaningful Day Academy in Lititz and the Friendship Heart Gallery and Studio in Lancaster on May 23. Those in attendance included Rep. Mindy Fee, Rep. Steven Mentzer, and Rep. Keith Greiner, along with Torry Hollis and Nicole Sidle, Human Services Committee; Michele Rudloff, executive director of the House of Representatives’ Office of the Majority Policy Chair; and Mark Davis, CEO of Pennsylvania Advocacy and Resources for Autism and Intellectual Disability (PAR). The Meaningful Day Academy is a personalized program that seeks to provide purposeful daytime activities for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities and autism. Individuals have the opportunity to explore their passions, fulfill their interests, and develop and utilize their skills. The Friendship Heart Gallery and Studio was uniquely licensed separately in 2017 and celebrates personalities and talents through artistic expression and collaboration. Community Participation Support is a service which provides opportunities for individuals to participate in their community and build interest in and enhance skills for competitive, integrated employment. Legislators also learned about the current shortage of qualified direct support professionals (DSPs), who provide daily hands-on support for Pennsylvanians with intellectual disabilities and autism. Currently, Friendship Community is seeking people interested in working with individuals to develop their capabilities in several unique ways. Information was also provided about funding issues and the impact of regulations and requirements. Friendship Community CEO Gwen Schuit emphasized the importance of relationships, one of the four key values at Friendship Community. Friendship Community is a faithbased organization that has been cultivating capabilities of individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism in Lancaster and Lebanon counties since 1972. The organization has three day programs, a home-based services program, Lifesharing, and 26 residential homes serving more than 200 individuals in the two counties. For more details, readers may visit www.FriendshipCommunity.net or follow Friendship Community on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

Flotilla Holds Boating Intergenerational Science from pg 1 Safety Courses
Coast Guard Auxiliary member Gregg Bollinger (standing) instructed a boating safety class at Muddy Run on April 9. As the beginning of boating season arrived, the Lancaster Flotilla of the Coast Guard Auxiliary offered “About Boating Safely” training courses to promote good seamanship, safe operation, and knowledge of Pennsylvania boating regulations. Most recently, nine individuals attended training on April 9 at the Visitors’ Center at Muddy Run Park. The eight-hour intensive course includes modules on knowing one’s boat, vessel maneuvering, rules of the road, navigating the waterways and safe operations. Upon passing the final examination, students become eligible to
receive the Boating Safety Education Certificate, which is recognized nationwide. The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is composed of uniformed, non-military volunteers who assist the Coast Guard in all of its varied missions, except for military and direct law enforcement. These men and women can be found on the nation’s waterways, in the air, in classrooms and on the dock, performing Maritime Domain Awareness patrols, safety patrols, vessel safety checks and public education. way Patterson could use the GSV aeroponic equipment to complete her project. Slothower explained that the GSV greenhouse located along Kinzer Avenue grows Swiss chard, lettuce, kale, and more vegetables to be used in the GSV kitchens. Extra vegetables are sold or donated to the CrossNet Food and Nutrition Center. Because the aeroponic greenhouse has limited hours, Weaver offered to move several of the portable pods to the GSV conservatory, where Patterson could monitor their growth on a daily basis at a time convenient to her. By March 12, Patterson’s science teacher, Michael Lichty, had approved her project, and the pods were in place. Patterson planted Rex butterhead lettuce seeds from the same seed packets into pots. Some seeds were planted in potting soil, and some were planted in the pods in rockwool that had been soaked in water. For the first three days after the seeds were planted, Slothower visited and recorded
information so that Patterson could attend a school trip. Once Patterson returned, she juggled checking the plants with playing defense on the HMS soccer team. Because of the location of the seeds in the conservatory, she could check them daily until well into the evening, often arriving after 5:30 p.m. to measure the height and width of the plants, count the number of leaves, and take photos. She also checked temperature, humidity, and weather, and every three days, she turned the pods. She often met up with Slothower during these visits. Patterson’s hypothesis proposed that seeds planted at the same time exposed to the same conditions should grow to the same size at approximately the same rate, but the data she was gathering was proving her suppositions wrong. “In 48 hours the aeroponics were up, but it took days for the (seeds) in potting soil,” recalled Slothower. “I proved my hypothesis wrong because there was a big

difference in size (of the plants),” said Patterson, who added that she also wanted to see if aeroponic vegetables could be grown economically in small spaces like apartments. “I proved that right,” said a smiling Patterson. “Aeroponics are faster and low maintenance.” Patterson presented the results of her project in a display that included her hypothesis, purpose, necessary materials, variables, procedure, research, and conclusion. She also included a special thanks to Slothower, Weaver, and GSV. In addition to
her display, she gave a three-tofive-minute oral presentation to the impartial HMS judges. After hearing her teacher praise her project, Patterson had a suspicion she might do well in the judging. On April 25, she was awarded first place in the Academic Fair competition, beating out her 18 classmates’ submissions. One of her proudest moments came when she recalled her science teacher mentioning one judge who never gave high scores to the projects. The judge had given Patterson’s project all top scores.

first.” Deb also explained what Petersheim could expect to experience once the plane and the glider were off the ground. “At 4,000 feet, you will hear a loud clank under your feet. That’s when the pilot of the glider pulls the release, and the rope will go home with the tow plane,” she said. Deb also told Petersheim that the control stick would allow her to help steer, although Petersheim later reported she left the steering to Forrest because of the cloud cover. “Make sure you enjoy the view,” Deb told Petersheim. “It is a pretty time of year. There are trees in bloom and different colored fields. On a clear day, you can see the skyline of

Glider Ride from pg 1 “She is the oldest lady, but not my oldest passenger,” Deb noted. “My oldest passenger was a 98year-old man.” Deb explained that a glider is attached to a conventional plane by a tow rope. Once the plane and glider reach 4,000 feet in the sky, the plane releases the rope and the glider is left to fly on its own. Prior to the flight, Deb provided Petersheim with information about the takeoff. “On the ground, it’s going to be about as sophisticated as a wheelbarrow ride,” she said. “(The glider) is a hollow metal vessel going over bumps of grass. Because it only weighs 770 pounds and has a 53foot wingspan whereas the tow plane has a 36-foot wingspan and it weighs a lot more, the glider will pop off the ground

Philadelphia.” Following the flight, Petersheim said she enjoyed the experience, especially being able to see local landmarks. “I’ve been in small planes like Cessnas that are only for two passengers, and it was a lot like that,” she said. “I could see my own farm where I was raised in Elverson and different things that I recognized. We circled around and we could see Hopewell Lake, and we circled over the mountain below Honey Brook. We went through clouds for a spell.” Petersheim, who worked at the Mrs. Smith’s pie factory in Morgantown before retiring, will be 91 in October. She joked that when she turns 100, she is looking forward to riding in a hot air balloon.
