Funding The Music BY ANN MEAD ASH
s the New Holland Summer Arts Program (NHSAP) returns to the park for 2022, organizers have lined up more than 20 concerts, with several musical acts that are new to the park venue. Performances will be held three times per week in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, located in the 400 block of Jackson Street in New Holland. Concerts will begin at 7 p.m., with the exception of the Saturday, Aug. 13, show, which will begin at 6:30 p.m. The season will begin with the New Holland Concert Band on Monday, July 4. The concert will be followed by fireworks. The rain date for that event will be Tuesday, July 5. Performances will conclude with the annual Labor Day Fiddler’s Picnic on Monday, Sept. 5. Funds to help support NHSAP are raised by the annual arts and crafts show sponsored by the organization. This year’s show will be held in

Craft Show Will Help Cover Concert Costs the park on Saturday, June 25, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. NHSAP reprsentative Sue Noll said organizers have lined up more than 80 vendors for the rain-or-shine event. Among the vendors will be those selling jewelry, repurposed wood crafts, plants and planters, rice bags, pot holders, soy candles, repurposed glass garden art, wreaths, centerpieces, floral arrangements, soaps, handcrafted leather items, hiking sticks, dog bandanas, ornamental iron work, artisan clothing, functional pottery, and weather whirlygigs. Crafters will donate items to a Chinese auction, which will be held at the event. In addition to the vendors, face painting by donation will be offered from 9 to 11 a.m. A signed and numbered Myrtle Tremblay print of the Robert Fulton Birthplace located on Robert Fulton Highway in Quarryville will be at the show for viewing. The framed print, which measures 27 by 32 inches, will be given away as a prize at the Fiddler’s Picnic. See NHSAP pg 4

He also thanked parents, guardians, and community members for their support of school faculty and staff. Addressing the Class of 2026, he said, “It has been a memorable two years filled with extraordinary challenges. We have seen you grow. We have seen many acts of kindness.” Referencing a Positive Behavior Intervention System (PBIS), which is being used at the middle school to teach behavior and socialization skills, he noted that students have been recognized 3,000 times for demonstrating the Spartan Way Creed, which focuses on “Doing what’s right, doing our best, and doing for others.” Ilgenfritz then introduced the American Legion Award, saying that it is given to students who are recognized for displaying characteristics as set forth by the American Legion. “The award (is) given to a student who possesses the qualities of courage, honor, leadership, patriotism, scholarship, and service, which are necessary for the preservation and protection of the fundamental institutions of our government and the advancement of society,” he explained. According to Ilgenfritz, eighth-grade students nominated their peers at the beginning of May, and the names of the top three boys and girls nominated were presented to staff members for selection. Magee took to the podium for the presentation, saying, “(Receiving the award) should be considered a building block in the foundation of the character of the recipients and serve as an indication of their future status as outstanding members of the community.” He then named the winners of the 2022 American Legion Award: Mia Janae Parry and Gabe Michael Martin. Mia is the daughter of Darren and Marcia Parry of New Holland. At school, Mia is a leader with Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Outside school, she swims with the Lancaster Aquatic Club. Marcia said that the family received a call prior to the awards ceremony letting them know that Mia had won. “We kept it a secret,” said Marcia, noting that she and Darren are both very proud of their daughter’s accomplishment. Mia said she was surprised to win but that it was a good feeling. Gabe is the son of Chris and Amy Martin of New Holland. “We were very surprised,” said Amy of the phone call they received about the award. “It was great,” added Chris. “We are very proud.”

Cornerstone Bible Church, 529 Lauschtown Road, Bowmansville, located just off Route 897, will host a vacation Bible school (VBS) from 9 to 11:45 a.m. from Monday, June 20, through Friday, June 24. Boys and girls age 4 through those entering seventh grade are invited. Families are welcome to attend the closing program on June 24 at 7 p.m. The theme of this year’s Bible-centered music program is “Exodus - Journey to Freedom.” Children will learn lessons from the Israelites as God delivered them from Egypt under Moses. Connie Dienner, director of Cavod, said that the organization has held similar classes for adults for some time and that classes for younger students had been requested. Dienner is looking forward to the events with enthusiasm. “Open houses are always a highlight,” she said, noting that meeting teachers is important to prospective students and their parents. Penn State Cooperative Extension Lancaster will offer testing of dial gauge pressure canners. These canners need to be checked for accuracy each year. New canners and new gauges should also be tested. Pressure canners with a weighted gauge do not have to be tested for accuracy because they cannot go out of calibration. Free, in-person testing will be available at two locations. Testing will be performed from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, June 17, at Good’s Store, 1338 Main St., East Earl, and on Thursday, June 23, at Good’s Store, 2499 Stiegel Pike, Schaefferstown. Clean gauges or lids can also be dropped off at these Good’s Store locations to be tested, and customers can pick up the gauge or lid on a separate date. Penn State Extension will also test over a two-week period in June by drop-off. Dropoffs will be accepted from Monday, June 20, through Wednesday, June 22, at the Good’s Store in Schaefferstown or at Good’s Store, 333 W. Fourth St., Quarryville. Gauges may be picked up on or after Friday, June 24. Drop-offs will be accepted at Good’s Store, East Earl, or Good’s Store, 1686 W.
