Garden Spot Raises Awareness Of Cancer BY WILLIAM FITHIAN

arden Spot High School’s Health Council hosted a Mini Relay For Life on May 24 for schools across the district. Students in grades seven through 12 were invited to walk the track in the morning to raise awareness for people living with cancer. In the afternoon, kids in kindergarten through sixth grade were invited to walk and participate in some fun activities. Julie Groft, a health teacher at GSHS and the Health Council’s adviser, was behind the planning for this event. With the help of the Health Council and the Relay For Life organization, she achieved a district-wide event. Her team raised funds over the course of a month. During the month of May, the elementary schools brought in coins, and the secondary campus collected coins for two weeks. Jars were placed in homeroom

“My grandma has battled cancer and continues her fight. … I keep her in mind as we’re walking and we’re putting in the work into this event today.” Groft mentioned that her club also moved a purple toilet and flamingos around New Holland to raise money. People could donate to “flock” someone’s house and have purple flamingos or the toilet placed in their front yard. Lessons were also taught at the elementary schools. Zoe Weir, a

senior at GSHS and member of the Health Council, explained, “We had a book for the younger kids. … It was a really good story to tell them to give them a little info … if they didn’t know what cancer was.” Students also made bracelets supporting Relay For Life with the help of the Health Council members. Weir added, “I think the kids really liked it.” Many students attending the event had a person in mind while walking. Maggie Bauer, a senior in the Health Council, said, “My grandma has battled cancer and continues her fight. … I keep her in mind as we’re walking and we’re putting in the work into this event today.” It has been two years since the last Mini Relay For Life was held at Garden Spot. Groft listed a few challenges she faced. “We have three new elementary school principals, new superintendent, the middle school principal is new, so they’ve never done this event before,” she said. CrossNet Capital Campaign Aims For Last Stretch BY ANN MEAD ASH

For several years, CrossNet Ministries, with locations at 110, 123, and 127 Franklin St., New Holland, has been searching for more space. “We have kept our eyes on this building,” said Meredith Dahl, CrossNet executive director, gesturing out the window of her current office to the large warehouse located on Carl Edwards (left) and Meredith Dahl the south side of Franklin Street. of CrossNet Ministries are hoping to “Last year, we went to the owners see the organization’s current capital and talked to them about our campaign raise enough so it can expand vision, and they said they would into the building across the street from the present location.

CrossNet set a goal of $3 million, and then representatives spoke to local foundations. One agreed to match funds if See CrossNet pg 7

by climbing onto the combine of a neighbor, Frank Weaver. Weaver will bring his 1967 Massey Ferguson combine to the event, and Ekdahl will play the role of Maggie. A narrator will explain how the story unfolded. “The woman was rescued from the building, which is now my office, so I will be coming out the window and onto the combine as part of the re-enactment,” Ekdahl said, adding, “The combine is not the exact one but very similar. (Weaver) sold the original some years back.” Weaver recorded the story of the rescue in a handwritten document. In the history, he stated, “At Poole Forge, where Route 23 crosses over the Conestoga, is the site of the Poole Forge Mansion. It’s on high ground but the West Tenant House - where 80-year-old Maggie McDowell lived - that was on lower ground.” Weaver explained that the water continued to rise, and Maggie and her maid, Anna Martin, retreated to the second floor. Then, the Carnarvon Fire Company was called to save them. “Several firemen waded through chest-deep water, fastening a 1-inch safety rope along the fence posts as they went,” Weaver wrote. They first situated Maggie in a boat, but it was overturned, dumping her and two firemen into the water. “They managed to get her to a tree and tied her to the tree,” the history stated. “Then they ran a rope from the tree back to the window that they had left from and finally got her back into the house. (Anna) got (Maggie) into dry clothes and covered her with blankets.” When Weaver heard about what happened, he drove his combine to rescue the women, who used a series of wooden planks to walk onto the giant tractor. “With several firemen and Maggie on board, we carefully and slowly drove the combine back through the flood waters to the highway to a waiting crowd of relieved neighbors and friends,” Weaver wrote, noting that the firemen, Anna and two dogs were also eventually rescued. The public is encouraged to watch the re-enactment, especially those who may have witnessed it first-hand. “There are still some people around who stood up on Route 23 to watch (the rescue),” Ekdahl added. Conestoga Post 662 commander Erin Magee (left) greeted national commander Paul Dillard during a March visit.

County. Post 662, located at 35 S. Hoover Ave., New Holland, has become known for the annual Memorial Day Pilgrimage and for its generosity to local organizations. When Post 662 was founded, the group met in the Harner Theatre, better known as The Ritz, on Main Street. Later, it moved to the Showalter Building on Main Street. A Legion Hall was built at 106 W. Main St., and it remained the home of the organization until 1952, when a capital campaign funded the present building. To celebrate its 100th anniversary, the post hosted national commander Paul Dillard in March. Dillard’s initiative in his role has focused on the loss of veterans to suicide. Dillard calls the effort No Veteran Left Behind. “No issue is more improtant than this: to save a life,” Dillard has written. According to Jeff Miller, Post 662 historian, more than 100 people attended a reception held for Dillard at the post, and the gathering raised funds for No Veteran Left Behind. A picnic celebration for all Post 662 members and their families, will be held on Saturday, July 30, beginning at 11 a.m., at the American Legion Conestoga Post 662 grounds. As part of the celebration, the Liberty War Bird, a restored Huey helicopter that was used in Vietnam from 1968 to 1970, will land at Case New Holland and be

available to view from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Another feature of the event will be the recognition of the descendants of Robert Wright, a World War I veteran who served in France and was the Post 662 Commander in 1922. “We are in contact with members of his family, and they will be present at the picnic,” said Miller. Post 662 commander Erin Magee also serves as District 10 commander, which encompasses Lancaster County. During a recent effort, Miller reported that members throughout the county were contacted concerning membership renewal with a 100% contact achieved. Concern for veterans is expressed regularly by bringing gifts to those who are homebound. Miller noted that although many area residents are familiar with the American Legion post as a place to eat and drink, he wants the community to know that the post is much more. He pointed out the organization’s regular efforts to support youth activities in eastern Lancaster County, including swim teams and softball teams. “We gave out nine scholarships of $5,000 each this year,” said Miller. “The priority is local community and Pennsylvania (needs),” he noted. More information about the post and its activities may be found at www.new hollandlegion662.org.

Dahl. “We need a donation receiving and sorting place for food and clothing donations,” she added, noting that space is especially needed for coat donations in the fall and Christmas donations in November. CrossNet owns the buildings at 123 and 127 Franklin St, without debt. Dahl said that those buildings could easily become crisis housing units. “We wouldn’t have to do much to these two buildings to be ready for that,” she said. Although CrossNet needs the new space to offer more services, Dahl does not see the expansion as benefiting only the ministry and those it serves. “We will be able to expand current programs and expand housing programs and create like a community center,” she said. “We want to make the space beautiful so that it feels like a safe space for people and so all people can access services here. We want it to be a community.” Readers who would like to learn more about the capital campaign may visit http://weblink.donorperfect .com/CAPCAM. To Schedule, Call:

CrossNet could raise $1.5 million. In March, a capital campaign kicked off. “With the match, we are at $2.2 million,” said Dahl. “We need to raise $800,000 more.” Dahl is hoping to raise those funds by Saturday, Dec. 31. On the CrossNet wish list is expanding the current youth center, which now offers programs throughout the week. “We would like to have fullcourt basketball that we could offer to the community,” said Dahl, who noted that workout classes and other activities could be held in the gym when it is not being used by CrossNet. Office spaces have been cramped for the members of the CrossNet staff for some time. “We need additional offices for caseworkers to meet with participants and to bring other agencies in to offer their services,” said Dahl, who listed counseling space and an expanded food pantry among the ministry’s needs. Although CrossNet partners with Anchored Ministries for clothing giveaways, space to keep some clothing on-site would be helpful. “We would like to have some prekindergarten space,” said

The Garden Spot High School (GSHS) Class of 2022 celebrated its graduation on June 6 during commencement ceremonies held in the school gym, 669 E. Main St., New Holland. The event featured speakers from the senior class and the administration. Michaela Bernek, president of the Class of 2022, welcomed the gathering. Student speaker and Class of 2022 vice president Jewel Boninu spoke on “The Blessing of Change.” She noted that change is necessary and that without goodbyes, students might never experience the hellos that lead them to grow into the best versions of themselves. “Whatever mountains you decide to conquer, remember to always welcome new hellos with open hearts and minds,” she said. Student Amanda Wolfe called her speech “A Thanks for Now and Always.” She quoted Jeremiah 29:11, in which God reminded the

60 Years Of Music And Art BY ANN MEAD ASH

“Today we rededicate this beautiful amphitheater that was built in 1962,” said Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation (LPAF) summer music committee series and board member Tony Kirchner as he welcomed more than 50 attendees to the LPAF rededication of the amphitheater on May 26. The rededication took place exactly 60 years after the amphitheater became a fixture at Long’s Park,

He noted that Sundays during the summer through Aug. 28 will be marked by the presence of national and international recording artists on the stage. Lancaster Mayor Danene Sorace spoke following Kirchner. She recognized former mayors Charlie Smithgall and Art Morris, both in attendance. “This institution … is a labor of love that has been happening for 60 years,” said Sorace, who

also recognized LPAF board members. Dave Wauls, past LPAF president had created a trivia quiz about the amphitheater for attendees to complete. Using true and false questions, he queried guests about the entertainers who have performed there - no Ricky Martin, but Arlo Guthrie and his daughter made an appearance. Wauls also entertained with ice breakers that involved sharing memories of concerts. Tom Ellis, interim president of LPAF, spoke about the history of the amphitheater, starting in 1957. “The iconic structure was a vision getting ready to be fulfilled,” he said of the amphitheater, pointing out that

Armstrong created the roof of the structure, which only needed its first repairs this year. He noted that the Sertoma Club put together a leadership team in 1959 and then built and commissioned the amphitheater before turning it over to the city. In 1962, the iconic building opened for its first summer with the New Holland Band on the roster, along with a number of individuals and celebrity acts” Ellis pointed out that the park hosts up to 6,000 guests at most concerts with 30,000 attendees at concerts that feature fireworks. Smithgall’s cannons were part of those presentations for 35 years. Ellis added that Pat Boone, Emmett Kelly Jr., and

Veterans from pg 10 and after a delay due to the pandemic, Williams was able to do so. Several county veterans’ organizations and many individuals helped defray some of the cost by donating money, some of which was raised through cookie sales. The event on June 25 will begin at 4 p.m., when food trucks and other refreshments will be on hand at the stadium. The Welcome Home Celebration will begin at 5 p.m. The traveling veterans will be escorted to the stadium by a veterans motorcycle group. There will be remarks from special guests and, weather permitting, a Huey helicopter landing. This event is open to the public. In the case of rain, the event will be held in the Garden Spot High School gym, located next to the stadium. For more information, call Mike Kunitsky at 717-4750498 or Colleen Hecker at heckercolleen@yahoo.com.
