Never Forgotten - A Tradition Carries On By Ann Mead Ash

A small delegation of veterans carried on the Memorial Day pilgrimage in the ELANCO area organized by the United Veterans Council of New Holland on May 25.

Since May 20, 1922, New Hollandarea veterans have held a pilgrimage on Memorial Day. Each year, a delegation of veterans visits area cemeteries and performs a ceremony. The grave of the most recently buried veteran in the cemetery is a focal point, and the veteran’s family is often present to take part. The first year the pilgrimage was held, only the two cemeteries in New Holland - Trinity Lutheran and St. Stephen - were on the schedule. In recent years, 13 cemeteries were on the list. Members of the New Holland Band accompany the veteran delegation to the cemeteries. Following the pilgrimage, a ceremony, including a guest speaker, is held in the New Holland Community Memorial Park. For many years, the pilgrimage in the ELANCO area has been organized

Local Thrift Stores Open For Business Bargain hunters who have missed visiting their favorite thrift stores during the coronavirus pandemic can now enjoy shopping once again as several local shops have recently reopened.

Among the sites now open for business is Freedom Thrift, located behind the Blue Ball Post Office at 114 Ranck Church Road, New Holland. Store hours are Mondays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Mondays from 8 to 9 a.m. the store

is open for those who are at high risk for the COVID-19 virus. General manager Dan Fox noted that all shoppers must wear masks or other face coverings while shopping. “We don’t have a certain number (of shoppers at a time), but if (the store) would get too full, I would limit the number of people in,” he said. The store features a variety of goods, including clothing, linens, lamps, home decor, small appliances, toys, and books. “We put new things out every day, and we also have a half-price color every week,” Fox noted. “That way if the merchandise has been here about four weeks, it will be (marked) half-price.” The store supports Revelations of Freedom Ministries (ROFM), a faith-based, Christcentered discipleship program See Local Thrift Stores pg 4

A lot has been said lately about the importance of physical health as it pertains to the novel coronavirus. However, mental health must not be forgotten. “It is just as important to take protective action and precautions for your mental health as you would for your physical health. One cannot exist without the other,” advised Kim McDevitt, executive director of Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC). “COVID-19 has changed the way we think about things. Where we had safety, we have insecurities. We are also conflicted with feeling anxious but also grateful for some of the gifts that we have received as a result of this See MHALC pg 6

Honoring Each Graduate By Ann Mead Ash

On the afternoon of June 2, ELANCO School District superintendent Dr. Bob Hollister was on the sidewalk in front of Garden Spot High School (GSHS), 669 E. Main St., New Holland, contemplating a math problem. “If we go every four feet times 225 placards, that’s 900 feet,” concluded Hollister. “That should be enough (space).” Hollinger’s math problem was the result of a partnership between the school district and CrossNet Ministries that placed one yard sign for each of the school’s seniors in front of the school on that afternoon. Each placard bore a photo of the student, See ELANCO pg 8

by the United Veterans Council of New Holland. This year, with COVID-19 restrictions in place, the group found it impossible to hold the pilgrimage as planned. Individual veterans, along with family and friends, volunteered to place new flags on the graves of veterans in the cemeteries. Michael Martin, president of the United Veterans Council of New Holland, decided it was possible to take a modified group to each cemetery on Memorial Day, which fell on May 25. “I felt it was our obligation to get a small detail together and visit the 13 cemeteries in eastern Lancaster County, the monument at the New Holland Park, and the three cemeteries in Churchtown to honor the over 1 million men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice to keep our great country safe and free,” reported Michael. writing a comprehensive, minimum 20-page paper. This paper was then refined and then submitted to a group of panelists who are considered authorities with experience on the topic. Each student then gave a presentation summarizing his or her paper to an audience and the panelists, after which each panelist challenged the student with questions about his or her statements. Students were evaluated on their ability to defend their arguments, maintain poise, communicate effectively, and more in this required project. Veritas students also complete a junior thesis paper, presentation,

and defense in their 11th-grade year, which must be centered on a theological topic and defended before a panel of pastors, professors, and teachers. They also complete formal classes in logic and rhetoric and continually work on these skills in all subjects, which often are taught using the Socratic method. Having the opportunity to engage in difficult dialogue, think on their feet, and even admit uncertainty or potential flaws in arguments with professionals in their fields of study gave these graduates practice in not only respectful dialogue and sound debate strategy, but also good listening skills.

In May, the seniors of Veritas Academy, a classical Christian school in Leola, presented and defended their capstone senior theses, completing not only a year’s worth of research and writing, but an academic career of honing their learning, research, logic, reasoning, and communication skills. In classical Christian education, grammar (the knowledge of facts), logic, and rhetoric comprise the three progressive stages students go through from kindergarten through 12th grade. With rhetoric being the final phase, graduating seniors must put their skills and knowledge to the test by choosing, researching, presenting, and publicly defending a thesis before a panel of experts and an audience of peers, family, and friends. The 2020 senior thesis presentations looked quite different from previous years due to the shutdown measures imposed to stem the spread of COVID-19. Instead of presenting their arguments before an in-person audience as is typical, the students completed the process via Zoom, with presenters, panelists, and teachers participating with a live audience on the platform. Each student spent months choosing and extensively researching his or her topic and

Meetings are held on Friday nights during the school year and on Thursday nights during the summer. In addition to the Junior Action group, ActionImpact offers a Senior High group for students in grades nine to 12 and a Junior High group for students in grades six to eight. “(Currently) we meet on Thursday nights from 6 to 10 p.m. It starts out with a dinner, and then we have sports and swimming and Bible study,” Pershall said. “We are working on building spiritual leadership.” Meetings are free, but youths are encouraged to make a donation to help pay for food. “On a typical (summer) night, we get between 30 and 50 kids depending on vacations and what is going on,” noted Pershall. “Hopefully, with the new Junior Action building, we’ll have a lot more young kids.” He said that Action-Impact attracts youths from the Owen J. Action-Impact, a nonprofit Christian youth organization located at 80 Vickery Lane, Elverson, will present a belated Easter egg hunt on Saturday, June 27, at 10 a.m. Children in kindergarten through fifth grade will be invited to search the property for plastic colored eggs, which will be filled with candy. There will also be an opportunity to win prizes. According to Ron Pershall, who leads the all-volunteer Action-Impact staff, the popular annual egg hunt had to be rescheduled because of the coronavirus pandemic. Since the eggs and prizes were ready for the event, organizers decided to hold the hunt a bit later this year. “There will be approximately 5,000 eggs hidden in the fields and woods,” Pershall said, noting that children should bring their own baskets or containers for the eggs. There will also be an egg hunt for parents. Select eggs will contain prizes, including gift cards for two lunches and a dinner at Olive Garden. The Easter egg hunt will be held rain or shine. In the event of inclement weather, the hunt will be held indoors. Also on June 27, ActionImpact will hold an open house of the site’s new Junior Action

Since Action-Impact’s annual Easter egg hunt was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic, a belated egg hunt will take place on June 27. The event will also feature an open house of the site’s new Junior Action clubhouse for youths in third through fifth grades.

crisis. The forced series of events and feelings associated with them can throw our equilibrium off.” MHALC’s mission is to promote optimal mental health through advocacy, education, and support, so the organization has stepped up its efforts to help individuals cope with these trying times. “The uncertainty is what’s unsettling,” McDevitt said. “It’s important to remember, in spite of this all, you still have control over your day-to-day.” Both solitude and unrelenting closeness can be challenges. For people who seek connection, McDevitt recommended video chats with friends and family or calling someone they might not have talked to in a while. She noted that it is valuable to ask three simple questions of someone who might be struggling with loneliness: Do you feel left out? Do you lack companionship? Do you feel isolated? The answers to these questions can

help lonely people acknowledge their isolation and begin to open contact with others in a supportive social network. “Research shows that just reaching out and being there for someone can truly save a life,” said MHALC child/family advocate Gretchen Gaudioso. Hugs and even handshakes have been sacrificed for social distancing, and the lack of physical contact can have a real impact. McDevitt recommended snuggling with pets or meditating to achieve calmness when needing touch. Conversely, designating a getaway spot in a house or apartment and then informing cohabitants of a need for space before being overwhelmed may help with too much closeness, McDevitt said. Establishing a routine for all household members ensures that there is order to each day, with time for short breaks built in. It is normal to feel anxiety, but when it persists or there is little to no relief during the day, it can be a good thing to take the mental health screening at www.mhalancaster.org/screening -tools/. If any of the symptoms are persistent or impede daily function, professionally trained MHALC staff members can provide a listening ear or guidance toward more intensive support, McDevitt said. MHALC has extended its hours to meet the increased need for 1-to-1 phone support, and it has created virtual support groups. “We have seen a spike on

Mental Health America of Lancaster County leaders, including (from left) president Tracey Lavallias, executive director Kim McDevitt, and vice president Julie Weaver, have worked together to ensure their organization is prepared to offer increased mental health support. all of our online mental health screenings, most notably more than 50% increase on our anxiety and depression screenings,” McDevitt reported. More than half of the people who have taken the screenings have never received treatment. “This could be the first time they have experienced any symptoms or concern for their mental health, or their mental health challenges have increased to the point where they may need support. Everyone is experiencing or is being affected by someone who is experiencing anxiety right now,” McDevitt said. Mental health treatment can be expensive, and McDevitt expressed concern for people who have lost their jobs and medical insurance and are unable to pay out of pocket for mental health supports. She noted that

MHALC is currently working on connecting people to assistance. MHALC provides services free of charge to the public and relies heavily on charitable support. Its main fundraising event was scheduled in April and had to be canceled, so McDevitt suggested that individuals may contribute to the Mental Health Sustainability Fund by visiting www.mhalancaster.org/ give-back/. A 24/7 mental health and crisis support line has been established for people dealing with anxiety or other difficult emotions. Individuals may call the toll-free warmline at 855-284-2494. Additionally, readers may find resources and helpful information by visiting www.mhalancaster.org/program -services-updates-page-covid-19/ or finding MHALC on Facebook.

StudentAthletes Earn Recognition The Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) has named 10 Lebanon Valley College student-athletes to its Spring Sportsmanship Teams. They represent their team, institution, and the conference with high integrity and exhibit respect for themselves, teammates, coaches, and opponents. The MAC named 166 students to its Spring MAC Sportsmanship Team, from the conference’s baseball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, and men’s volleyball teams. The team includes the following students. Benjamin Hinkley of Denver is a member of the men’s tennis team and is pursuing a Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Physical Therapy in exercise science and physical therapy. He graduated from Lancaster Catholic High School.

Denver Fair Canceled The Denver Fair board of directors has decided to cancel the 2020 Denver Fair. This decision was made due to the coronavirus pandemic and concern for the health and safety of fair patrons, participants, and volunteers. Even if Pennsylvania moves to the green phase before September, the green phase of reopening would limit gatherings for a planned or spontaneous event, including fairs, to 250 individuals. The green phase also includes additional requirements and restrictions that would be impossible to enforce. The Denver Fair Committee looks forward to bringing the 2021 Denver Fair back on Tuesday, Sept. 14, through Saturday, Sept. 18, 2021.

June 2. The group assembled the placards and placed them in the grass just beyond the sidewalk in front of the high school and Garden Spot Middle School. Dahl noted that the signs were paid for by donors. Lisa Kerstetter, CrossNet director of marketing and events, created and organized the files to complete the large sign order. Dahl said the idea stemmed from a conversation she had with Hollister in April when it became apparent that COVID-19 restrictions would make normal graduation procedures and prom impossible.

“I called Dr. Hollister to ask what we could do to help, and we brainstormed,” recalled Dahl, who said she knew that the yard signs honoring students would be available for purchase, but that some students would not be able to afford them or have a good spot to place them. “I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if we could put them up?’” Dahl said that the idea was to bless the GSHS Class of 2020 seniors and celebrate them. “The school has done an amazing job of coming up with ways to celebrate, so this is one more,” she said. “This community is awesome and they made that happen.” Hollister noted that a designated pickup day was scheduled for students to take their signs and that Dr. Matt Sanger, secondary campus principal for grades seven to 12, would make sure that signs were delivered to students who could not pick them up. Each year the Lancaster County Office of Aging distributes vouchers that can be used at farmers markets to purchase fruits and vegetables grown in Pennsylvania. The vouchers are part of a Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture program that supports local farmers and provides nutrition to people age 60 and over. In order to participate in the program, people need to live in Lancaster County; be age 60 or older by Thursday, Dec. 31; have an annual income at or below $23,606 for one person or $31,894 for two people; and not live in a facility where their food is provided. This year, there are changes to the program. Each eligible person will receive four vouchers valued at $6 each, instead of $5 as in previous years. The vouchers can only be obtained by completing a short application and mailing it to the Lancaster County Office of Aging. Due to the pandemic, the vouchers will not be distributed in person at either senior centers or the Office of Aging. Once a completed application is received, the vouchers and a list of markets will be mailed to the applicant’s home. The application is available by visiting www.lancoaging.org or by calling the Office of Aging at 717-299-7979.

60TH YEAR!

Children in the LancasterLebanon IU13’s Early Head Start/Head Start programs have been taking part in virtual programs, including virtual story times, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Typically, in the Early Head Start/Head Start programs, family service workers and home visitors are introduced to children at a very young age, and they become trusted adults who work with the parents as a team to teach them vital new skills. The story times are intended to foster early language learning and a love for reading. During story time, every child sits and listens to a staff member while he or she reads aloud, points out pictures, speaks in silly voices, and sometimes even acts out certain scenes. When COVID-19 arrived, the classes were closed for the rest of the year. However, Early Head Start/Head Start staff in Lancaster and Lebanon counties have been meeting with families on Zoom, continuing as much of their program as they can virtually. They also decided to reconnect with their students through virtual story times.

Early Head Start/Head Start already had a strong Facebook following, so this platform was chosen for the story times. Staff members from both counties read books in both English and Spanish. While the primary goal of the videos is to maintain a relationship with the families, they are also a good way to introduce the program and its staff to the community at large, which is

important during recruitment season. Early Head Start/Head Start reported that on average, the posts reach more than 1,200 people, with encouraging comments and many shares. Videos have been uploaded on Saturday mornings since mid-April and will continue at least through June. To view the videos, readers may visit the “Lebanon County Head Start page on Facebook.

Members of the Donegal Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Chapter participated, along with other groups and members of the community in the event organized by Lancaster AMVETS Post 19. “After meeting the Blue Star Moms to receive flags, we split up to search for veteran graves, said George Ross Society president Stewart Carter. “We wore masks as necessary to be safe during this time. We placed flags at all veteran graves we found and also replaced old flags with new ones and gave the old flags to the AMVETS who will retire them. We quietly thanked each veteran by name for his service. “Remembering American

Lancaster Osteopathic Health Foundation (LOHF) announced the first eight organizations to join the new LOHF Clinical Supervision Collaborative (LCSC) in response to the need for more child/youth mental health care professionals in Lancaster County. The initiative is funded for three years, in part by a grant from the Steinman Foundation. The collaborative will equip mental health professionals to take on supervisory roles and will provide a post-master’s clinical fellowship program for license-eligible providers to receive supervision required for licensing. The LCSC is slated to begin in July with its inaugural participants: Community Services Group, TEAMcare Behavioral Health, Laurie Schein, Commonwealth Clinical Group, Thoughtful Wellness, Matters of the Heart Counseling, Diversity Works, and Focus Counseling Services. The LCSC believes that investing in the talent pipeline for behavioral health will result in stronger behavioral health organizations and competent supervisors who can mentor their staff. The LCSC adds that trained supervisors can effectively recruit and retain clinical staff, reducing patient caseloads, improving recruitment and retention, and lowering staff turnover rates. For more information on the LOHF Clinical Supervision Collaborative, readers may visit www.lohf.org/LCSC.

Cassidy Kuhl (left) of Willow Street was recently named 2020 Pennsylvania Mrs. Agriculture USA, and her daughter, Harper Chase Kuhl, was named 2020 Pennsylvania Tiny Miss Agriculture USA. and Lancaster County Mrs. Agriculture USA (this past year), our focus was primarily in our county helping at fairs and going to schools. We volunteered at the PA Farm Show with Turkey Hill handing out ice cream,” Cassidy said. “We hope to expand that to visit more all over PA.” The state competition was held just before the shutdown began, so the Kuhls have been making the most of things. The planned promotional visits have been virtual. “We’re making posts from home, celebrating national holidays and connecting them back to agriculture,” Cassidy shared. “I did a video reading for Ag Literacy Week.” Cassidy was also able to help with a farmer’s milk giveaway event in Willow Street on May 22. “We are always looking for more ways to educate ourselves, like visiting local farms and ways we can help in our community,” she said. To learn more, readers may email Cassidy at MissAgUSAH Kuhl@gmail.com. More information about Miss Agriculture USA is available at www.missagricultureusa.org.

Two Willow Street residents have been chosen to represent the state in agriculture advocacy. Cassidy Kuhl, 26, and her daughter, Harper Chase Kuhl, 4, won the titles of 2020 Pennsylvania Mrs. Agriculture USA and 2020 Pennsylvania Tiny Miss Agriculture USA after a competition in March. The pair had served as the Lancaster County titleholders last year along with Cassidy’s sister-in-law, Rebecca Kuhl, who was the Lancaster County Teen Miss Agriculture USA. Harper Chase had been the state runner-up in her age group. At the state title competition, Harper Chase placed first in interview, agriculture wear, formal wear, and the photogenic category. She finished second in introduction, impromptu question, and essay. Cassidy received first place in all seven categories as well as in speech. Cassidy and Harper Chase are now eligible to advance to the national competition in Ohio this summer. As of May 26, the competition was scheduled to go on as planned, but with tight safety measures, Cassidy said. Miss Agriculture USA is a nonprofit queen organization that promotes and celebrates agriculture by giving young girls and women opportunities to build confidence, promote self-esteem, develop public speaking skills and leadership skills, form lasting friendships, and more. Cassidy and Harper Chase enjoy horseback riding, gardening, and raising rabbits and ducks. One of the highlights of their reign is stressing the fact that agriculture is for everybody. “You don’t have to live on a farm to love agriculture,” Cassidy said. “As the Lancaster County Tiny
