The Sights And Sounds Of Yesteryear BY ANN MEAD ASH
teve Loewen, chair of the Vintage Sights and Sounds New Holland Antique Car, Gas Engine, and Tractor Show, remembers the exact moment more than 40 years ago when he suggested holding the show to New Holland Band representative George Weaver. “In 1981, we were doing the Memorial Day Pilgrimage,” recalled Loewen. “George was in the New Holland Band, and we were in the cemetery at Bowmansville. I said, ‘George, let’s have a car show in New Holland.’” Loewen explained that a show had been held for two years by a local organization, but he did not think that would continue. “I wanted to keep the show going,” he said. “It had been extremely successful.” Weaver thought the car show would be a great project for the New Holland Band. “Music and antique cars go together well,” said Weaver, and he suggested the slogan “Vintage Sights and Sounds.”
S
On Sunday, July 10, the 41st annual show will be held in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, 400 E. Jackson St., New Holland. The field will open for car parking at 9 a.m. According to Loewen, the theme of the show will be “Pickup Trucks.” As in the past, vehicles to be judged must register by noon on Saturday, July 9. Loewen noted that he has been asked if an El Camino is a pickup truck, and he said he would allow the vehicle to be registered as a truck. John Riggs, who won best in show at the New Holland event a few years ago for his bright orange 1937 pickup, said that he agrees that the hybrid vehicles should qualify. Riggs, who was a mechanic for 39 years, devoted himself to restoring his pickup and spent six years on the project, enlisting a little help from each of his grandchildren along the way. “This is my seventh year showing it,” said Riggs, who brought home two trophies from the 2021 Spring Car Cruise in Ocean City, Md.
George Weaver (left), Steve Loewen (center), and John Riggs, pictured with Riggs’ prize-winning 1937 pickup truck, are looking forward to the 41st annual New Holland Antique Car, Gas Engine, and Tractor Show.

New Holland Farmers Day Association Fair president Paulene Redding and Kristie Overly, who handles premiums for the New Holland Fair exhibits, want the ELANCO community to know a few things about this year’s 90th New Holland Fair. “We are still growing strong, but we could use their support,” said Redding. “We want (the organization) to be a strong part of the community for the next 90 years,” added Overly. The New Holland Band will play at the New Holland Summer Arts Program Independence Day celebration.
Ken Laudermilch, conductor of the New Holland Band, noted that the organization has plenty of music to choose from when he selects compositions for the band to play at the annual New Holland Summer Arts Program (NHSAP) Independence Day celebration. This year’s concert, which will be followed by a fireworks display, will be held in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, located on the 400 block of East Jackson Street, on Monday, July 4, at 7 p.m. The rain date for the event is Tuesday, July 5. Lanny Millette, director of donor relations, is clear about what The Potter’s House will celebrate when it holds its annual pork roast this summer. “(We will celebrate) the progress we have made so far and the new horizons that are ahead,” said Millette, who pointed to four wooden stakes tied with bright orange plastic ribbons located at one end of the Still Waters campus. “See the stakes? Those are the dimensions of the building, which will hopefully be two stories plus a basement.” Back in 2018, when The Potter’s House held its annual pig roast at 261 School Lane, Brownstown, located along the Conestoga River, the organization was dedicating the property with plans to build a faith-based rehab facility to combat drug addiction. On March 25, 2020, Still Waters Recovery Center opened on the site. The building Millette referred to will be a second group home for up to eight students. The Potter’s House and The House of Ruth are separate arms of a nonprofit, Christ-centered ministry that offers a holistic approach to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of pre-release and post-release prisoners and individuals desiring to overcome addictions. The tagline “From Captivity to Destiny” has long encapsulated the mission of The Potter’s House. On Saturday, July 23, The Potter’s House and The House of Ruth, which opened in Leola in June of 2020, will hold a pork roast at the Still Waters campus. The name Still Waters is based on the verse from Psalm 23 that reads, “He leads me beside the still waters.” A variety of activities for both adults and children will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. According to Millette, among the activities will be games such as volleyball, ladder ball, and croquet. Food, which will include roasted pig with Mama Elaine’s Almost Famous Sloppin’ Sauce, assorted side dishes, beverages, and desserts, will be available from See Progress pg 4

the carriage in 2022. Day died of COVID-19 in February, but Redding will honor him as marshal for the 2022 parade. In addition, Redding has designated specially priced sponsorships for Division 1 of the parade to help cover the costs of upgrades to the association’s building at the corner of Roberts Avenue and Franklin Street. Those wishing to help with this effort may call 717354-5880. New for this year’s fair will be a fair queen competition and a coloring contest. “We want to have a fair queen who is knowledgeable about our fair and agriculture in our community,” said Overly. Funds to help send the New Holland queen to the state competition will be raised at a vendor bingo to be held at Garden Spot Fire Rescue, 339 E. Main St., New Holland, on Sunday, July 31, beginning at 2 pm. The coloring contest will feature three pages for three age groups in the fair book or to print out from www.newhollandfair.org. Prizes will be awarded to winners in each age group. The tug-of-war competition, long a fair favorite, will return, but teams will not be limited to fire companies. Instead, youth groups, sports teams, pastors, businesses, and more are encouraged to sign up. In addition, organizers are hoping to resurrect the bucketbrigade event, once associated with the fire company auxiliaries, at least as an exhibition this year. “We have some vintage items (to display),” said Overly.
Entertainment will be featured nightly on a stage at the corner of Main Street and Custer Avenue. The Kracker Beez will play on Thursday, Sept. 29. The Jess Zimmerman Band will perform on Friday, Sept. 30, and Josh Squared will take to the stage on Oct. 1. Both organizers noted that they would like to hear fresh thoughts on the activities associated with the fair. “We would like to open up the lines of communication,” said Overly. “People don’t have to join the board,” pointed out Redding. “(They could come in to work) a few hours and give us their feedback and their ideas.” Redding added that if a community member sees an area that he or she is interested in, the organization is working to build subcommittees and develop junior chairs in a mentorship relationship.

July 4 Concert from pg 1 “We have put a big folder together of patriotic music,” said Laudermilch. “We add a few each year, and we have about 50 (pieces) now.” From the folder, Laudermilch chooses historic pieces, marches, service hymns, and a “large slice of American tunes associated with coming-of-age America from Revolutionary times.” Laudermilch pointed out that this year’s concert will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the New Holland American Legion Post 662 by playing the
“American Legion March,” composed by M.A. Althouse of nearby Berks County. “(Althouse) is like the Sousa of Berks County,” said Laudermilch. “He has written a lot of great marches.” Another prominent feature of the concert will be the premiere of a march by New Holland Band member Warren Daugherty, a retired dentist and the principal saxophonist of the band. Laudermilch said that this is one of several compositions Daugherty has written for the band. “Into the
Air” salutes the courageous members of the U.S. Air Force. Other selections Laudermilch gave special mention include “Star-Spangled Spectacular” by George Cohan, which includes smatterings of wellknown tunes such as “Yankee Doodle” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag.” Calling the “Commando March” by Samuel Barber, one of his favorites, Laudermilch recalled that the West Chester native was lauded by his hometown for going forth to “inspire the world with his music.” The second half of the concert will include the popular “God Bless the U.S.A.” by Lee Greenwood; “The Armed Forces Medley,” during
which those who served in different branches of the military will be asked to stand when they hear the anthem of their branch; and “Let Freedom Ring,” which Laudermilch called “a great new piece.” The concert will be announced by Steve Nolt, formerly of WDAC radio. The performance is one of many musical presentations brought to the park each summer by NHSAP. All shows are free to the public. For more information about NHSAP and a full concert schedule, visit www.new hollandsummerarts.com. NHSAP welcomes volunteers. Incredible Journey will take place on Monday, July 25, at 2 p.m. and is designed for children ages 3 to 6 and their siblings. The program is open to teens and adults. The program is designed for families. An art sale to benefit the library will feature Gail Horner’s “Cornfield Series” of acrylic on canvas paintings featuring views of the agricultural landscapes near the artist’s home. The artwork will be on display at the library through Sunday, July 31. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the library.
