Fun - Terre Hill Style BY ANN MEAD ASH

“We are excited to be able to get back into events,” said John Styer, one of the organizers of Terre Hill Days. “People have been asking (since Jan. 1) if we will have Terre Hill Days this year, so I think people are ready to get out.” Styer and the rest of the Terre Hill Days committee are planning lots of new entertainment to highlight the 2021 event, which will be held in the Terre Hill Park, 210 Lancaster Ave., Terre Hill, on Thursday through Sunday, July 15 through 18. Events will open at 5 p.m. on July 15 and Friday, July 16, and at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 17. A church service and gathering will begin at 10:30 a.m. on July 18. “We have new bands (to entertain),” said Styer, who noted that Echo North from Reading will play acoustic rock specializing in tunes from the 1960s to today at 7 p.m. on July 15. On July 16, the Cramer Brothers Country Band from the Poconos area will play. “People have

been asking for that band, and this will be their first time in Terre Hill,” said Styer. At 2 p.m. on July 17, the side stage will feature Dutchyfunk, a New Orleans style brass band from Lancaster, while at 4 p.m. Old Time Country Music will play bluegrass in the lower pavilion. At 7 p.m. on July 17, the headliner will be Left Field from the Reading area. “They are rockier,” Styer said of the band that will play just prior to the 10 p.m. fireworks show. Styer noted that children’s entertainment will include daily performances and activities. Among these will be Sneakers the Clown, the DKers Juggling Show, games, rides, and a magic show. An unlimited ride special will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on July 15. On July 17 at 3:30 p.m., an airplane will drop sweets from the sky for a candy scramble. Along with candy, children who take part in the scramble will find coupons from vendors, Christmas in the Park coupons, and free tickets to that same event.

The annual Terre Hill Days event will bring rides, entertainment, food, and fireworks to the park.

Part of the fun of owning an antique, vintage, or classic car is having a story to tell about that vehicle. Greg Dyer, who has been a head judge at the New Holland Antique Car, Gas Engine, and Tractor Show for 30 years, has a story about his 1963 Thunderbird, and his grandson Harry Townsend has a story to go with his 1987 Dodge D150 pickup. Both cars will be featured on the dash plaque for the 2021 car show, See Car Show pg 4

It takes a humble performer to move out of the spotlight. Ken Laudermilch, conductor of the New Holland Band is just such a person. “The highlight is not the music,” said Laudermilch, who has prepared a concert program for the New Holland Summer Arts Program (NHSAP) Independence Day celebration. The event will be held in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, located on the 400 block of East Jackson Street, on Sunday, July 4, at 7 p.m. The concert will be followed by fireworks.

Although located in Ephrata, the Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley does not limit itself to that area, but rather includes any township or borough that touches the banks of the Cocalico Creek, which includes Akron, Clay Township, and Denver. “Anything in this museum was made by or owned by someone who lived in the Cocalico Valley,” explained Bender. Clocks by well-known area clockmakers, Hibshman family items, and the Ephrata 12 o’clock steam whistle, which was blown from the Ephrata Borough Electric Light Plant on Church Street, are all on display. A children’s room includes a guessing game to help youngsters identify a toaster, a celery vase, a form for knitting stockings, and a boot jack from the past. One case is dedicated to the family that built the home. Moore and Rebecca Connell had eight children, with five girls surviving to adulthood. None of the Connell daughters married, and when the last surviving child, Nora, died in the early 1960s, the historical society purchased the home. According to Bender, members of the society have painstakingly decorated and furnished areas of the home to make them look the way a Victorian home would have looked in the period. The parlor furniture is from other homes in the area, but the bedroom suite is original to the Connells, including the bedspread, curtains, and curtain rods with tiny mirrors attached. The bathroom with a commode and copper-lined tub is the same as when Nora lived there. “There is no water supply to the tub,” noted Bender, who said that heated water from the

20/20 Hindsight … And A Vision For The Future

Expressing Gratitude: Cavod Plans Open House “We are so grateful to be here,” said Connie Dienner, founder and director of Cavod Performing Arts, a nonprofit dedicated to offering a godly environment to study the arts. “We are celebrating through this open house.” Dienner said she is especially thankful that the organization has survived the last year or so when COVID-19 restrictions made it difficult to keep going. “It’s only by the support of the community and the grace of God that we’re still here,” she said. Cavod’s open house will be held at 665 W. Main St., New Holland, on Saturday, July 10, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for tours of the facility and a chance to meet the instructors. The

organization, which is now in its 17th year, offers classes in a variety of disciplines for 3-year-olds to adults. Lessons are available in dance classes including all levels of jazz, ballet, creative movement, hip-hop, acrobatics, and modern dance, along with music, theater, and acting. In addition, Cavod is now livestreaming classes from each studio. “You can attend a live virtual class from your home,” noted Dienner. “It’s very state of the art, so it looks like you’re right in the classroom.” Teachers will be on hand to meet potential students at the open house. Dienner said the event will feature free food, door prizes, face painting, a bounce house, a visit by local radio personalities who will

broadcast live, and more. Free food options will include hot dogs, popcorn, and soda. Lickity Split will provide free ice cream cones for those who register for classes that day or who have already registered for the fall session, as well as ice cream treats for purchase. A special drawing will be held to win a free month’s tuition at Cavod for those who qualify. Regular performances will continue to be a highlight of the event. This year, Dienner has lined up music, theater, and dance presentations every 30 minutes. In addition, every half hour, attendees will have an opportunity to win door prizes donated by local businesses. A grand prize featuring a variety of

experiences, including tickets to shows, will be given away. Dienner is looking forward to the event with enthusiasm. “We have grown. We’re excited. We’re open,” she shared. “We have made it through COVID, and we’re stronger than ever.” Readers who would like to know more may visit https://cavod.org. which will be held in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, 400 E. Jackson St., New Holland, on Sunday, July 11. The field will open for car parking at 9 a.m. According to organizer Steve Loewen, the theme of the show will be “197071 Muscle Cars.” “Those are the pinnacle years for muscle cars,” said Loewen. “We are calling it the Muscle Car Era.” Dyer and Townsend worked together to restore both the Thunderbird and the truck. Dyer first saw the Thunderbird as a middle school student when it was owned by the father of a classmate. “Years later, I worked with the guy who owned it. His sons had torn it apart, so when I bought it there was no engine, transmission, or interior,” Dyer explained, adding that the owner had all the parts. “That was 1994,” he recalled, standing proudly by the now-complete white Thunderbird with a black top and red interior.

shut off lights. “We cover a lot (of expenses) for our puppy raisers,” she said, pointing out that food, vet costs, and grooming are included. “(Puppy raisers) need to provide treats, toys, dog beds, and lots of love,” she said. PAD has developed a timeline for puppies that matches them with puppy raisers at two months old after they have begun to be housetrained. At 12 months, the dogs undergo an evaluation, and at 14 months, X-rays are taken of hips and elbows, which are then evaluated by orthopedic veterinarians befor the dogs move forward with the program. Because it’s very important to PAD that clients are partnered with dogs that can meet their needs, it can take several rounds of clients meeting puppies before a match is made. “It depends on what the puppy needs to learn to make a final placement,” explained Zoccola, who noted a smaller female dog with an upbeat personality would not be matched with an individual who has weight-bearing mobility issues. “We would look for individuals who need retrieving and door opening (for that dog),” she said, adding that during meetings PAD representatives and puppy raisers examine dog and client interaction. “We are looking at the individual’s body language when they’re working with the dog,” she noted. “We are watching how the dog is interacting with that individual.” Zoccola added that puppy raisers have input into this process. “We help them to learn what we’re looking for, and together we match that dog with someone with a disability,” she said. Townsend has been associated with the car show since he was featured in a newspaper photo in a miniature car as a child. He purchased his now brightly painted truck in February 2017 for $800. “It was my first truck,” recalled Townsend, whose grandfather added that in 2017 the then high school student did not yet have a driver’s license. “It barely ran, and it had a lot of rust,” Townsend said. “I am awfully proud of it (now).” Between 9 a.m. and noon on July 11, vintage cars will line up on the show field, while hit-andmiss engines and vintage tractors will be on view in the park. Antique tractors and hit-andmiss engines that are not being judged may be displayed free of charge. Cars will be judged in more than 30 classes. Judging for the People’s Choice Award will begin at noon and cease at 2 p.m. For a nominal fee, spectators may obtain a ballot and vote for their favorite car. The Carl S. Sauder and Tom Wagner memorial awards will be given to cars chosen by designated judges at 3 p.m. The show is presented in partnership with the New Holland Band, and at 1 p.m., the New Holland Combo Band will perform. A variety of food items will be available for purchase, including bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwiches and coffee from 9 a.m. until noon. Fun from pg 1

20/20 from pg 3 Wolfram was almost surprised by a retirement party on May 21 planned in his honor by his son Dr. Jonathan Andrews, who now practices at Optometric Associates, and Wolfram’s wife, Arlene. “I didn’t know anything until 24 hours ago,” said Wolfram between greeting guests under the canopy set up behind his practice. “A patient slipped up and said, ‘I see you’re having an open house tomorrow,’” he noted. The story of Wolfram’s long tenure in New Holland began in 1967 in Stuttgart, Germany. “I came here from Germany at age 18 1/2,” said Wolfram. “My parents gave me $1,000 and packed two suitcases and waved goodbye and said, ‘Good luck to you, son.’” In America, Wolfram did his undergraduate work at Ohio State University, where he majored in math. He graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in in Philadelphia in 1976. After moving to the Lancaster County area, Wolfram partnered with Stoltzfus, and the pair practiced with a national chain at Park City. “I wanted a quieter setting and a road less traveled,” remembered Wolfram. In

New Holland, the building where Howard Barr had practiced optometry years earlier became available, and the two doctors decided to make a move after about five years at Park City. “We opened cold out here as a 50/50 partnership,” said Wolfram. Jonathan recalled hearing stories of how Wolfram and Stoltzfus painted baseboards between patients the first week, but soon they became busier. “Within a couple years, we had a nice practice,” said Wolfram. Jonathan said that about a year ago, his dad set his sights on retiring at this time of year. “(My father) has been dwindling his schedule. He would see patients half the day. He felt the beginning of summer was a good date (to retire),” he said. Wolfram said the biggest changes he has seen in more than 40 years of practice have been in the area of technology and computerization in both equipment and health records. “It’s a lot to keep up with,” he said, adding that he enjoyed patient care more than doing charts and dealing with regulations. Jonathan said that taking over his father’s practice was something he had thought of since he was a child. “It was between that and dentistry,” he said, noting that he thinks optometry provides a fulfilling way to help patients without discomfort. He now practices with his wife, Dr. Kathryn Andrews, who specializes in treating children as well as adults, and Dr. Cindy Koza. More information about the practice may be found at www.optometricassociates.net.

A Tale Of Two Siblings Pastor Witmer Retires From St. Stephen Ressler’s Mill Tour Pays Tribute To Local History BY ANN MEAD ASH knows me,” said Franklin in a video that was made shortly before his “We are a best-kept secret,” said death at age 92 in 1994. The mill also served as the property at 2900 Stumptown Road, Mascot Post Office and a community Ronks, since the 1730s. In 2014, Tim Witmer and his wife, Barbara, were shopping at a local grocery store when they met Barbara’s cousin Carol Sprecher. The Witmers, who were originally from New Holland and who had become a couple when Stan Deen cast them as leads in “Brigadoon” in their senior year at Garden Spot High School, had just purchased a house in the area. Tim had recently stepped down from pastoring a church in Upper Darby, and the pair was looking forward to retirement. “Little did we know what God had in store for us,” said Tim. Sprecher wanted to know if Tim would help to pastor at her church, St. Stephen Reformed on Main Street, which was in a transitional period. Tim agreed to begin pastoring the approximately 60 attendees, and in November 2014, the church voted to change denominational affiliation to Presbyterian Church in

America and to call Tim as part-time pastor. “Our son said, ‘You’re a general in God’s army, and He has another assignment for you,’” said Barbara. Tim’s part-time work at the church quickly became full-time, and the church began to grow. By 2016, attendance at the church had increased to about 200 and by 2019 to more than 250. On June 6, 2021, Tim preached his last sermon at St. Stephen. He had originally planned to retire at the end of 2020, but he extended his tenure into 2021 to see the church through the pandemic and to offer stability to the committee searching for his replacement - Andrew DiNardo - who will begin preaching at the church this summer. While Tim was leading the church, it became apparent that the steeple was in a state of disrepair. By 2016, funds had been raised to repair the steeple, which was eventually removed from the church. When it was determined that the steeple was beyond repair, a replica was built to replace it. “Our greatest joy is that the light of the Gospel is shining

brightly in the church,” said Tim. “It was almost a metaphor when we relit the steeple.” Barbara noted that the stained glass windows were refurbished as well. In 2010, Tim wrote a book called “The Shepherd Leader.” Now, he is looking forward to scheduled speaking engagements to share about the book in the Dominican Republic and at Greenville Seminary in South Carolina. He has other writing projects he would like to complete, and he noted he is antic-

ipating spending time with his wife. While Tim noted he and Barbara will miss the people of St. Stephen, he said, “We are happy the church has found a successor.” Barbara agreed, saying, “To find a successor so quickly, that is a God thing.” “To God be the glory,” Tim stated. St. Stephen is located at 249 E. Main St., New Holland. In-person services are held at 8:15 and 10:30 a.m. each Sunday. More information is available at www.ststephenpca.org.

Among the artifacts they left behind is the Conestoga wagon bell Anna used to summon Franklin for lunch. Visitors can also see the summer kitchen where meals were cooked and the root cellar, which can keep eggs and butter at a constant temperature year-round. The children’s ice skates and the wedding flowers that belonged to Annie, Franklin

During a tour, Taylor explained the workings of the mill, noting that grain was stored on the second floor. “(Grain) was loaded in a barrel and hoisted up using waterpower,” she noted, adding that water was channeled to run the water wheels and grinding stones. “In the early 1900s, the water wheels were replaced with water turbines,” explained Taylor. Conveyor belts took the meal upstairs to be sifted, with finer product used for food and coarser meal becoming animal feed.

Happy from pg 1 “We are at a stage where people are ready to be outdoors,” continued Laudermilch. “We are ready to experience community by sitting in a park by family and friends and hearing music.” Laudermilch added that audience members are welcome to converse while the band plays in the background. To provide a pleasant experience, he has carefully selected songs for the performance. “It’s happy music. It’s sogood-to-see-you music,” he said. Among the many pieces Laudermilch has chosen for the traditional concert are the opener “Belle of the Ball” and a number of marches, including “The Billboard March,” which he said is a famous circus march, and “The Black Horse Troop,” which John Philip Sousa premiered with a troop of black horses on the stage. “‘Commando March’ is by Samuel Barber from West Chester,” noted Laudermilch, who will also include Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever.” “The Magic Trumpet” by James Burke will be played by the band’s principal trumpeter Leon Hillard. Laudermilch mentioned that “Resplendent Glory,” which will follow Hillard’s solo, is one of his favorite pieces by the composer of romantic music Rossano Galante. Laudermilch called “Somewhere in Time” by John Barry a melancholy piece, which will be followed by “Tara’s Theme” from “Gone With the Wind” and the energetic “Voices of Spring” by Johann Strauss Jr.. A sacred segment of the concert will include “Amazing Grace”; “May the Good Lord Bless and Keep You” by Meredith Willson, which was a standard of Kate Smith’s 1950s television show; and “The Battle Hymn

of the Republic.” Laudermilch has also included “Arlington” by Paul Murtha, which he called “a pensive, thoughtful piece about the graves of Arlington and those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.” The concert will end with the “Armed Forces Salute.” The rain date will be Monday, July 5. The performance is one of many

musical presentations brought to the park each summer by NHSAP. All shows are free to the public. For more information about NHSAP and a full concert schedule, readers may visit www.newhollandsummerarts.com. NHSAP welcomes volunteers.
