Book Giveaway To Follow Race By Ann Mead Ash
In 2017, Heather Smith, director of the ELANCO Library and avid runner, was planning to run the annual Shoe-Fly 5 held during Terre Hill Days. “I run the course all the time,” said Smith. However, that year, the race was canceled, and Smith still has not officially run the race because in 2018, she became the race director for the Shoe-Fly, which is now one of the ELANCO Library’s several fundraisers. “This is one of my favorite events because I am a runner,” noted Smith. “Even though I can’t run this one, I am delighted to organize it.” This year’s Shoe-Fly 5 will be held on Saturday, July 20, beginning at 8 a.m. The run will step off from the Terre Hill Community Center, 131 W. Main St., Terre Hill, adjacent to the Terre Hill Park. Packet pickup and registration on the day of the event will take place from 6:45 to 7:45 a.m. Parking and restroom
Runners lined up (left photo) and finished (center and right photo) the Shoe-Fly 5 race held during Terre Hill Days in 2018. This year’s run will be held on July 20 beginning at 8 a.m. on Main Street in Terre Hill. facilities will be available at the park. The Shoe-Fly course, which will be the same as it was in the past, is challenging because it is hilly, and the weather tends to be warm at the time of year it is held. The 5-miler offers a variety of hills cutting through Lancaster County farmland. The first mile is fairly flat. The second mile has the first notable hill, with the second climb occurring at about 3.5 miles.
Cavod Schedules Open House
Those climbs are followed by a final flat mile through town. Because of the steep inclines, water stations will be strategically placed along the route. Refreshments will be available after the race. In addition, the Terre Hill Days committee will hold an a la carte breakfast at the park pavilion beginning at 9 a.m. that day. The race will offer trophies to the first male and female runners to cross the finish line. Prizes will also See Shoe Fly 5 pg 7

- ½ tsp. garlic powder - ½ tsp. paprika - ¼ tsp. fresh ground pepper - a dash of cayenne pepper - 4-6 sprigs fresh oregano
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Cut potatoes into smaller wedge-shaped pieces (I did half, quarters, then eighths). Place cut potatoes on baking sheet(s). Make sure they’re not crowded; use 2 sheets if need be. In a small bowl, combine olive oil, Parmesan cheese, salt, garlic powder, paprika, pepper, & cayenne pepper. Mix until combined. Pour about 1/3 of oil mixture over top potatoes & using hands, rub oil until potatoes are evenly coated. Bake in oven for 45-60 minutes, turning potatoes & reapplying oil mixture every 15 minutes until fries are golden brown & crispy. After the first 15 minutes, mince oregano leaves & sprinkle on top of fries. Remove from oven & let cool slightly. Serve hot.

Weaver, referencing the Barrett-Jackson Auction. “The 1969 Camaro has taken off the last three years,” noted Weaver, adding that the 1967 Camaro used to be one of the more popular cars. “(The 1969) has jumped out ahead of the 1967, and the ’69 is now the hot one.” The 50th anniversary of cars built in 1969 will be the theme for the 38th annual car show, which will be held in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, 400 E. Jackson St., New Holland, on Sunday, July 14. The field will open for car parking at 9 a.m. “(The model year) 1969 to me was the end of an era,” commented Steve Loewen, who has worked to organize the show since its inception. “In the 1970s, everything changed.” Between 9 a.m. and noon, vintage cars will be lined up on the show field, while hitand-miss engines and vintage tractors will be on view in the park. Antique tractors and hit-and-miss engines that are not being judged may be displayed free of charge. Cars will be judged in more than 30 classes. Pieter Hegeman II, a member of the Susquehanna Valley Camaro Club, will bring his 1969 Z28 Camaro with a General Motors Crossram engine that he purchased in Maryland 20 years ago. “They only made 107 of (these cars with the Crossram),” said Hegeman, “and there are less than 40 of them known to exist (at this time).” Hegemen explained that the engine had to be special ordered for the car and installed at the dealership. Because the cars were designed for racing, few have survived. Hegeman likes to tell the story of meeting one of the original designers, Jon Moss, developer of the Crossram motor, at a Super Chevy event at Maple Grove Dragway. “(Jon Moss) talked to me and said, ‘This is the real deal,’” recalled Hegeman. “I said, ‘I assumed it was,’ (but) I didn’t know who he was,” said Hegeman, who later obtained several autographs from Moss. Hegeman complimented Weaver and Loewen on how smoothly the show is organized and run. John Riggs of New Providence plans to bring his 1937 Chevy pickup that he converted to a street rod to the show. “My wife, Dorothy, found me (the truck) along the highway 12 years ago,” said Riggs. “She figured I would wait until I retired to (convert it).” Riggs purchased the truck around 2007, and he tore the frame off the next year. An experienced mechanic, Riggs completed the conversion around 2014 with help from his son and friends. “It’s never done,” said Riggs with a chuckle. Finished or not, Riggs’ truck has won several awards, including two victories at the Dover Southern Delaware Street Rod Association show. The show is presented in partnership with the New Holland Band, and it benefits the band, the Friends of the ELANCO Library, and the park it is held in. At noon, the New Holland Combo Band will perform, and at 1:30 p.m., the New Holland Swing Band will perform. Also at noon, judging for the People’s Choice Award will begin. For a nominal charge, spectators may obtain a ballot and vote for their favorite car. Other prizes will include the Carl S. Sauder and Tom Wagner awards, which will be given to cars chosen by designated judges. Prizes will be awarded at 3:30 p.m. A variety of food items will be available for purchase, including bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwiches and coffee from 9 a.m. until noon. Other food that will be for sale at the event will include hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, pulled pork sandwiches, french fries, and ice cream. The New Holland Band will sell sodas and water. The show will be held rain or shine. Cars must be registered to participate by noon on Saturday, July 13. Owners who have questions about the show may contact Loewen at loewen58@yahoo.com or stop in at the New Holland Radio Shack to pick up a registration form. More information about the event may be found at www.NewHollandBand.org.

tuition at Cavod. Returning students who register by Monday, July 15, will receive a discount. Regular performances have been a hallmark of Cavod open houses in the past. This year, Dienner has lined up gymnastics, theater, dance, and hand-to-hand combat demonstrations every 30 minutes. In addition, characters from a variety of Cavod’s theater shows will be present to meet those in attendance. Every half hour, attendees will have an opportunity to win door prizes donated by local businesses, and at the end of the open house, a grand prize featuring a variety of experiences, including tickets to shows, will be given away. This year’s open house will emphasize a number of new teachers and upgrades to Cavod programs. “We have a new acrobat/gymnastics teacher, said Dienner, referring to Jessica Rajski, who comes to the academy from Houston, Texas, with several years of teaching experience. Rajski trained and performed with Chimal Circus Performing Arts of Houston, and she has toured the world with trEd Dance Company. Rajski has also added a program called Dance, Step, and Stomp for all ages and all levels. “(The students) dance with their own rhythm. They might use barrels and sticks, said Dienner. “It’s a cool class. Monica DePaul is now teaching acting in Cavod’s redeveloped acting program. DePaul has worked with Blue Gate Musicals on the Bird-in-Hand Stage and Sight and Sound Theatres. She has a musical theater degree from California State University, and she spent several years working in New York City before coming to the Lancaster area to work. Dienner noted that the new acting program curriculum offers students more challenges to help prepare them for college theatrical programs. Dienner also stated that Cavod’s ballet curriculum now offers more for the serious dancer. “New ballet teacher Lillian Ortiz from Mississippi (has joined us), said Dienner, who added that Ortiz’s experience includes dancing with Ballet Magnificat. Ortiz studied ballet at the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet and then at the Miami City Ballet School. Teacher Melissa Everett will teach early arts at Cavod. A graduate of Friends of Israel Bible Program, Everett has experience running day care, and she is excited to be teaching at Cavod. Aaron Maier will teach hip-hop at Cavod, where he enjoys challenging students while keeping the fun quotient high. He is currently training at Morton’s Dance Center. Readers who would like to peruse the fall Cavod Academy schedule of classes may visit https://cavod.org. Individuals who have questions may call 717-354-3355.

Charles Ludwig VFW Post 7362 of New Holland is holding its fourth annual clothing drive to support the veterans at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center. The items that are sought are new and gently used men’s clothing; new women’s clothing (no used clothing); new socks, T-shirts, and undergarments; new and gently used men’s and women’s shoes, sneakers, and work boots; and new and gently used coats, jackets, and outerwear. New and used suitcases and carry-on bags are also being collected, so that veterans have something to carry their personal items in when they leave the medical center. Donated items must be clean and serviceable; no children’s clothing should be donated. Post 7362 notes that many veterans arrive at the VA Medical Center with only the clothing they are wearing. The center’s services include training, counseling, health care, rehabilitation treatment programs, physical services, and more. Offerings are open to male and female veterans. For more details and to schedule a donation dropoff, readers may contact VFW Post 7326’s commander, Norman E. Brower Jr., at 717-824-2343. The post is located at 755 Rancks Church Road, New Holland.

Due to the storms that took place during the summer of 2018, the commonwealth of Pennsylvania requested and obtained a Small Business Administration (SBA) Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) Declaration. EIDL assistance is available only to small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, and most private nonprofit organizations in the designated counties and after the SBA determines they are unable to obtain credit elsewhere. EIDLs provide the necessary working capital to help small businesses survive until normal operations resume after a disaster. The SBA can provide up to $2 million to help meet financial
obligations and operating expenses that could have been met had the disaster not occurred. The loan amount will be based on the actual economic injury and the company’s financial needs, regardless of whether the business suffered any property damage. For businesses in Adams, Berks, Chester, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties, the eligible event was the flooding that took place on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, 2018; the deadline to apply is Thursday, July 18. Berks County businesses may also apply due to the flooding that took place on July 21 to 27, 2018, with the application deadline of Tuesday, July 23. Berks and
Chester county businesses are also eligible to apply based on the flooding that occurred from Aug. 12 to 15, and the deadline to apply is Wednesday, Sept. 11.
