Creating Confident Students CrossNet Backpack Giveaway Scheduled BY ANN MEAD ASH

“We are going back to a more normal (back-to-school) event,” said Lisa Kerstetter, CrossNet Ministries director of marketing and events. By normal, Kerstetter means a backpack, school supplies, and more giveaway that will include an introduction to community resources and allowing more than 25 people at a time into the facility where the event is held. This year’s Back-to-School and More Student Backpack Giveaway will be held at the CrossNet Ministries Youth Center, 110 W. Franklin St., New Holland, on Tuesday, Aug. 10, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Backpacks filled with school supplies are available for all ELANCO School District students in kindergarten through grade 12 who are participating in free and reducedcost lunch programs. Proof of residency in the school district such as an electric or phone bill will be necessary to receive a free backpack. In addition to backpacks,

resources such as free haircuts, Anchored Ministries Clothing Closet, and information from an ELANCO School District representative will be available. Free food items, which will be provided while supplies last, will include snacks and a beverage and a free ice cream cone. CrossNet backpack drives through several local organizations began on July 1, but individuals are welcome to donate backpacks and school supplies at the CrossNet Ministries offices at 123 W. Franklin St., New Holland. Requested items are new, sturdy backpacks for students of all ages, pens, spiral tablets, pocket folders, rulers, notebook paper, three-ring binders, highlighters, water-based markers, safety scissors, crayons, mechanical pencils, colored pencils, pencil cases, pencil sharpeners, index cards, glue sticks, erasers, and small tissue packets. Financial donations will also be accepted. For those who prefer to shop online, items may be shipped to CrossNet.

Area organizations and businesses collect backpacks and school supplies for the CrossNet Backpack Giveaway (top left photo). About 500 area students receive backpacks each year (bottom left photo). Voluteers help fill and sort backpacks for the annual event (right photo).

County Treasures: Seiverling Museum Specializes In Pedal Cars

Pastor Witmer Retires From St. Stephen BY ANN MEAD ASH

BY ANN MEAD ASH

At 66 Lancaster Ave., Ephrata, just a stone’s throw from Ephrata Hospital, is a small building that holds treasures to make the eyes of most children and many adults grow large with delight. The Seiverling Museum - Car and Pedal Car Museum holds 150 pedal cars from all over the world, plus three full-size classic cars. “This was put together by my great-uncle Richard Seiverling,” said Darren Seiverling, who, along with his family, oversees the museum See Pedal Car pg 3

Tim Witmer, shown with his wife, Barbara, recently retired from St. Stephen Reformed Church in New Holland.

In 2014, Tim Witmer and his wife, Barbara, were shopping at a local grocery store when they met Barbara’s cousin Carol Sprecher. The Witmers, who were originally from New Holland and who had become a couple when Stan Deen cast them as leads in “Brigadoon” in their senior year at Garden Spot High School, had just purchased a house in the area. Tim had recently stepped down from pastoring a church in Upper Darby, and the pair was looking forward to retirement.

“Little did we know what God had in store for us,” said Tim. Sprecher wanted to know if Tim would help to pastor at her church, St. Stephen Reformed on Main Street, which was in a transitional period. Tim agreed to begin pastoring the approximately 60 attendees, and in November 2014, the church voted to change denominational affiliation to Presbyterian Church in America and to call Tim as parttime pastor. “Our son said, ‘You’re a general in God’s army, and He has another assignment for you,’” said Barbara.

Richard, who passed in 2006, began collecting cars - full-size cars - in the mid-1980s. “The building was built in 1991 to house his car collection,” said Darren, noting that between 1991 and 1994, the building was full of classic cars with space to work on some of them. “Around ’95, he got the first pedal car, and he was so proud,” recalled Darren, pointing out the 1947 tan and orange Pontiac that is still in the museum. “He called us over the first day it came because he was so excited.” The first pedal car was the beginning of a trend that would last the rest of Richard’s life. “It felt like every week, I was putting in a new pedal car,” Darren said. “They came in crates from all over the nation.” According to Darren, Richard liked the color schemes and how small

Darren, who was 16 at the time and was shocked by the decision. “(Richard) sold the Chevy and (bought) more pedal cars.” For an adult who remembers the age of pedal cars - from about the 1920s to the 1970s, it is interesting to look for cars similar to those they remember, but some rather fancy automobiles are on display as well. Referencing a 1924 Packard, Darren noted that families that could afford $50 to $100 for a child’s toy in that time period owned the cars. By the 1950s, some pedal cars could be purchased for $15, and middle-class families could afford them. “I consider these the Power Wheels of that time,” said Darren. Darren, who still buys and sells pedal cars, identifies them by searching old pedal car advertisements on the internet. But cars are not the only vehicles represented in the museum. Darren shared that most of the cars in the museum are “original restored,” meaning they were bought brand new by somebody and played with, and they went to the attic before being restored close to original condition. “The restorers in the mid-1990s picked them up and restored them and sent Richard a Polaroid (photo),” said Darren. “If he liked the Polaroid, he sent them a check.” By 1996, Richard wanted to share his enjoyment with others, so he opened the museum and began bringing in small groups for tours. Soon he was running out of room. “At that time, he had a 1927 Chevy coupe, and one day, he said, ‘I am selling the Chevy because I need more room for pedal cars,’” recalled

When Joy Rowland, a volunteer with ELANCO Meals on Wheels, arrives at Trinity Lutheran Church, 221 E. Main St., New Holland, on Monday mornings between 8:15 and 8:30 a.m., usually the first thing she does is begin to unload the insulated box of meals that has been delivered from the Meals on Wheels Lancaster location on Manheim Pike. Rowland divides the bags of lunches and dinner entrees according to the type of meal and the route where it is to be delivered to prepare for the drivers and runners who will arrive between 9 and 9:20 a.m. According to Rowland, regular meals are available for a nominal fee per day with specials - which are prepared with a specific diet in mind -

costing a little more. “(Meals are delivered) Monday through Fridays and holidays,” said Rowland, who noted that the number of meals delivered varies. “We have New Holland, Leola, and Terre Hill routes, and the Terre Hill is a very long route,” she noted. Generally, the Leola route has nine or 10 recipients, while New Holland has 14, and Terre Hill has about a dozen. Most recipients receive both lunch and dinner. Lunches usually include a sandwich, such as ham and cheddar, tuna or egg salad, or another variety of meat. A dinner entree may include sesame chicken, peapods, and rice. “The menu varies a lot,” noted Rowland, who added that soup, meatloaf, or a pasta dish, such as lasagna, may be among the

dinner selections. “They have a fish that looks really good for the entree (sometimes),” said Rowland, who added that most recipients receive milk if they do not have a lactose issue. Rowland, who coordinates the deliveries with her friend Judy McKinley, said that drivers are scheduled for certain days and routes. “We like one driver and a helper to run the meals to the door,” she said, adding that students and others sometimes act as runners to fulfill community service requirements. Volunteer drivers and runners are needed to deliver meals. Readers who are interested in volunteering may call 717-354-9150. Individuals in need of receiving meals may call 717-392-4842.

Service Planned The annual Outdoor Historical and Inspirational Service will take place at the 1855 Alleghany Mennonite Meetinghouse, 39 Horning Road, Mohnton, on Sunday, July 18, at 6:30 p.m. Aaron Groff of Lititz will speak on “Christians in the Marketplace,” and the Singing Servants Quartet will present special music. Attendees are asked to bring a lawn chair and a “Church and Sunday School Hymnal.” For confirmation of the event and more information, contact Grace Sensenig at jgsen@ windstream.net or 717-278-8459.

While Tim was leading the church, it became apparent that the steeple was in a state of disrepair. By 2016, funds had been raised to repair the steeple, which was eventually removed from the church. When it was determined that the steeple was beyond repair, a replica was built to replace it. “Our greatest joy is that the light of the Gospel is shining brightly in the church,” said Tim. “It was almost a metaphor when we relit the steeple.” Barbara noted that the stained glass windows were refurbished as well. In 2010, Tim wrote a book called “The Shepherd Leader.” Now, he is looking forward to scheduled speaking engagements to share about the book in the Dominican Republic and at Greenville Seminary in South Carolina. He has other writing projects he would like to complete, and he noted he is anticipating spending time with his wife. While Tim noted he and Barbara will miss the people of St. Stephen, he said, “We are happy the church has found a successor.” Barbara agreed, saying, “To find a successor so quickly, that is a God thing.” “To God be the glory,” Tim stated. St. Stephen is located at 249 E. Main St., New Holland. In-person services are held at 8:15 and 10:30 a.m. each Sunday. More information is available at www.ststephenpca.org.

Tim’s part-time work at the church quickly became full-time, and the church began to grow. By 2016, attendance at the church had increased to about 200 and by 2019 to more than 250. On June 6, 2021, Tim preached his last sermon at St. Stephen. He had originally planned to retire at the end of 2020, but he extended his tenure into 2021 to see the church through the pandemic and to offer stability to the committee searching for his replacement - Andrew DiNardo who will begin preaching at the church this summer.
