Cavod Camp To Stage “Frozen Jr. By Ann Mead Ash

Cavod Academy’s summer musical theater camp for youths ages 10 to 18 has yet to begin, but Alexander Weaver, who will make his first directorial solo effort for the organization, is looking forward to overseeing the camp and producing “Frozen Jr. at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. Camp will be held at the venue from Monday, Aug. 3, through Friday, Aug. 14. “The fun is being able to teach students and interacting with the cast and the production crew, said Weaver. “I love summer camps, (especially) the feel of being able to put on a show, play games, and just connect. Four performances of the musical, based on the 2018 Broadway version of the Disney animated film, will be

HMS Plans Golf Tournament By Ann Mead Ash

Hinkletown Mennonite School (HMS) invites community members and friends of the school to take part in its annual benefit golf tournament, which is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 11. The tournament will be held at French Creek Golf Club, 4500 Conestoga Road, Elverson. This year’s tournament, which was originally scheduled to be held in June but was delayed due to COVID-19 restrictions, will use a scramble format to provide fun for golfers of all ability levels. The tournament will offer lunch at 11:30 a.m. prior to a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m., with the tournament followed by dinner. French Creek boasts an 18-hole championship golf course, designed by course architect Gil Hanse and spread across 230 acres of rolling countryside. See HMS pg 6

When Lisa Martin, RN and unit manager for Mountain View at Fairmount, a floor that serves about 80% dementia patients, applied for a grant from Leading Age for an intern, she did not realize how crucial the effects of COVID-19 restrictions would make the position. Leading Age is a trade association for nonprofit organizations that serve the elderly. The organization advocates for quality care and services for seniors. See Internship pg 5

While the celebration of Independence Day on July 4 may have made Americans think back to the moment in Philadelphia in 1776 when the Founding Fathers declared citizens of the 13 colonies free from English rule, owners of several Lancaster County bed-and-breakfasts were thinking of those serving overseas. At least four local innkeepers joined in an Independence Day initiative that sent cookies, socks, banana bread, and toothpaste to members of the U.S. military deployed overseas in an effort dubbed “Inn Support of Our Troops.

Lisa Martin (left), RN and unit manager for Mountain View at Fairmount, and intern Lainey Mast have been working to bring evidence-based techniques to help dementia patients and those overwhelmed by the isolation associated with COVID-19 restrictions. The internship was made possible by a Leading Age grant.

held for the public at The Junction Center on Saturday, Aug. 15, and Sunday, Aug 16, at 2 and 7 p.m. each day. “Frozen Jr. brings royal sisters Elsa and Anna, along with the land of Arendelle, where they live, to life on the stage. The junior version includes songs from animated film such as “Do You Want to Build a Snowman? and “Let It Go, along with five new songs, which were written specifically for the Broadway production. The story of sisterhood follows Elsa and Anna from their girlhood in the palace to an encounter with danger where each discovers her inner potential. Cast members will represent Elsa and Anna at different ages, and other well-known characters from the film will include Hans, Kristoff, Olaf, Sven, King Agnarr, Oaken, and Queen Iduna.

Troops from pg 1 Rebecca Gallagher of the Historic Smithton Inn, 900 W. Main St., Ephrata, said she jumped at the chance to take part in the project, noting that “veterans are a soft spot for me.” Rebecca, who owns the inn with her husband, Dave, served as co-chair of the committee that built Veterans Plaza in Ephrata with the

Winters Leadership Memorial statue as the centerpiece. After completion of the project, the group held a lecture series that gave area veterans a chance to share their stories. Each Veterans Day for a decade, the inn has reserved all seven guest rooms for free to veterans. “We love being able to give back and thank vets

personally,” she said. For the initiative, Rebecca sent a collection of the sweet breads she serves her guests, which include flavors such as strawberry nut, cinnamon butterscotch, banana, chocolate zucchini, and blueberry orange. “I think what’s important for me is having the opportunity to make a (member of the military) smile and know that someone’s thinking of them and thankful for them,” said Rebecca. “If I can present a

small gesture of my appreciation then I’m all in.” Pam and Dallas Fritz at the B.F. Hiestand House Bed & Breakfast, 722 E. Market St., Marietta, went for variety in their donation, sending a box stuffed with peanut butter oatmeal cookies, beef jerky, pork rinds, cheese crisps, hot sauce, green tea, ground coffee, candy, a mug, wet wipes, socks, and disposable razors as a care package to a service member in the Air Force stationed in Afghanistan. The pair noted that they have always supported the military by giving free rooms each year to veterans near Veterans Day and offering a discount to active-duty military year round. “We felt the need to support this endeavor,” they said. The owners intend to continue the effort by making monthly gifts to active military members. Jan Garrabrandt, who owns The Artist’s Inn and Gallery, 117 E. Main St., Terre Hill, with her husband. Bruce, sent chocolate chip cookies and a dozen pairs of socks to an armed services member in mid-June. Both her father and her husband’s father served in the Army. “We try to support the military in several ways,” said Jan, who noted that a discount is available to veterans booking any room on any day of the year. “We also participate in the free rooms for veterans program for Veterans Day by giving away all the rooms at the inn to veterans. We’ve been doing this since we opened 24 years ago,” Jan said. Brenda Miller, proprietor of the Brownstone Colonial Inn, 590 Galen Hall Road, Reinholds, baked a fresh batch of chocolate chip and butterscotch chip cookies on the morning of June 23 to mail to a member of the military. She also enclosed a new pair of wool socks as packing and included a letter thanking the young man for his service. This was not Miller’s first effort to support the troops. “Recently a young man from our church enlisted in the Marines, and we have been praying for him, along with other service personnel who have so graciously given of their time to protect our great nation,” she said, adding that the opportunity to bake for an assigned member of the service was the least she could do to show support. “I hope to encourage our military to be courageous, to stand firm, and ultimately to trust in God for their hope and future,” she said. Inn Support of Our Troops was organized by Maria Coder, a public relations professional working with the Association of Lodging Professionals (ALP). The effort brought together more than 30 inns across the U.S. Inn Support of Our Troops

Jan Garrabrandt, who owns The Artist’s Inn and Gallery in Terre Hill, sent chocolate chip cookies and a dozen pairs of socks to an armed services member in mid-June as part of an effort called Inn Support of Our Troops. worked with Soldiers’ Angels participating as Angel Bakers, which gave volunteers access to a database with the first name and state of a service member who had expressed interest in receiving baked goods. Soldiers’ Angels is a national charity providing aid, comfort, and resources to the military, veterans, and their families. Many of the participating inns were closed during the pandemic, which led to income loss and even financial hardship. The Inn Support of Our Troops effort gave bedand-breakfast owners a chance to showcase their talents and reach out to members of the military serving far from home.

Weaver noted that one challenge of staging the show is related to the familiarity of the movie. “It’s a very popular movie, so there are expectations for some scenes and singing,” said Weaver, who added that the scale of the show is daunting as well. “(We have) to make it feel massive in the space that we have,” he said. “Trying to make the show feel as big as the movie is one of the challenges.” Auditions for the camp were held in mid-July. Weaver said that a cast of 30 to 40 members is preferable, but a larger cast can be accommodated. Weaver said the show was chosen by Connie Dienner, executive director and founder of Cavod, and Monica DePaul, artistic director of theater. “It became available, and it’s very popular with children,” said Weaver of the selection. Show staff will include Ric Weaver as assistant director, Bente Weaver as camp manager, and Cassidy Martin as stage manager. Amy Rau will serve as music director, assisted by Hannah Rau, and Stephanie Morales will be the choreographer. Lights and special effects will be the responsibility of Shannon Seip and Lee Shaeffer will oversee sound. Emily Johnson will provide makeup and hair design, and Tyson Severin will be in charge of props. Area families are invited to make the trip to Manheim to see the show and see where WJTL broadcasts. Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under, may be purchased in advance at https://cavod.org or by calling 717-354-3355. Tickets may also be available at the door.

When Martin applied for the grant, she had an employee in mind for the internship. Lainey Mast, a junior at Bloomsburg University in Bloomsburg, had worked for Fairmount as a resident care assistant since 2017. Martin knew Mast, now a psychology and social work major with plans to work with the elderly, would be a good fit for the position. What she did not know at the time was that the work she planned for Mast to do would be so necessary for patients who were uncomfortable after being isolated under COVID-19 restrictions. While earning her degree from Millersville University, Martin studied evidence-based research, and she wanted to revisit that area for her patients. “I wanted the most up-to-date research and how could we apply that to taking care of our residents,” said Martin. Beginning at the end of May, Mast researched interventions for residents with dementia-related behaviors and those struggling with the isolation they experienced under COVID-19 restrictions. “Based on the research, I created individualized interventions for residents and implemented them daily,” said Mast, who observed behavior patterns in specific patients and identified triggers and removed them when possible. In other cases, residents were understimulated. “I looked into their interests and came up with creative activities for them,” said Mast, who incorporated exercises that have been found effective such as using music to aid recall or reminiscence therapy, where she showed a video related to a patient’s past interest to stimulate conversation. Mast spent time educating Fairmount staff during daily huddles, where she discussed general approaches to working with residents with dementia. She also briefed them on the best ways to work with specific residents. She worked with staff to develop theme weeks that helped add enjoyment to residents’ days as the quarantine progressed. The internship was due to end in midJuly. Reflecting on what she learned, Mast noted that she has discovered how important it is to get to know the individual resident prior to trying to understand the patient’s behaviors. “Going forward this has given me a better understanding of what interactions with people with dementia look like on a daily basis,” she said. “In my previous job, I interacted with the residents, but it was much more task focused and this is much more person focused.” She also noted that the experience had showed her which approaches and communication are effective and which are not. Martin noted that initially she was concerned about how COVID-19 restrictions would affect the internship, but she soon learned that Mast’s work could have a positive effect on the isolated residents. “Lainey has been great,” said Martin, who noted that Mast had met with caregivers, identified patients who were struggling, and tailored plans to meet their needs. “(Mast) looks at interests and care plans and interviews team members to help improve the quality of life overall with those residents,” shared Martin, who added that when the internship ends staff members will be able to utilize the intervention plans Mast developed. “Knowing a baseline of what (a resident’s) interests are and what they respond to will be good,” she said. “It’s improving quality of life as a whole by giving them meaningful activities that could in turn prevent (issues).” Fairmount is a nonprofit Life Plan community located at 333 Wheat Ridge Drive, Ephrata. The elevated green prevented him from seeing the hole from the tee box, so he was not aware that his first shot had gone in, but when he arrived at the green, he and his party realized that the ball was in the hole. Melissa Beidler, director of enrollment and marketing with HMS, the goal for this year’s tournament is $10,000. Funds raised by the event will assist with the school operating budget and help make tuition costs affordable for families desiring admission. HMS, which is located at 272 Wanner Road, Ephrata, is now entering its 40th year. The school currently serves more than 240 students from prekindergarten through 12th grade with a Christ-centered, child-focused education. Lunch will feature grilled burgers, hot dogs, and sausages, along with marinated chicken breasts, potato salad, coleslaw, fresh fruit, assorted cookies, iced tea, lemonade, and assorted sodas. Dinner will start with tossed, Caesar, and garden salad options, followed by sliced prime rib au jus, panko-crusted herb chicken with cream sauce, or manicotti with shrimp and sauce. A fresh vegetable medley and roasted red bliss potatoes will serve as sides. Assorted cool and hot

beverages will be served, and cookie and brownie desserts will be featured. Prizes will be awarded to the top two groups of four. Prizes will also be given out for the longest drive and closest-tothe-pin winners, and there will be a putting contest. “One unique contest at French Creek is the ‘pool in the pond’ contest, said Jody Fausnight, director of advancement for HMS. “Golfers purchase three opportunities to drive a golf ball toward a floating pool in the center of the

5 p.m. on Friday, July 24. Phase two of funding will offer two sets of criteria, one for businesses with 20 or fewer employees and one for businesses with up to 100 employees. Businesses that previously applied and did not qualify are encouraged to review the new criteria. Grants will not be awarded on a firstcome, first-served basis; individuals have five days to submit applications. Businesses are also encouraged to review the criteria for submissions on the aforementioned website prior to July 20. Once the application portal closes, the grant committee will begin evaluating all applications received. Those meeting the criteria and demonstrating the greatest need will be sent to the Lancaster County commissioners for approval, and recipients will be notified by email. This round of funding follows phase one, which awarded a total of $10.4 million to 423 companies earlier in July. In addition to funding, businesses with 100 or fewer employees can register for a free COVID-19 supply kit, gain public health information, and subscribe to a newsletter for email updates on the aforementioned website. Economic Recovery Plan funding comes from the $95 million in Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act money that Lancaster County received from the federal government. This funding will be used to help to provide a positive path forward for the local economy, which is fueled in part by more than 12,000 businesses with 100 or fewer employees.

by the Board of Lancaster County Commissioners in May. Phase two of the Recovery and Sustainability Fund offers $15 million in grant awards to Lancaster County-based businesses with 100 or fewer employees. The grant portal opened for applications at 8 a.m. on July 20 and will close at
