Portales of Blue Ball has been hosting exchange students through SHARE! High School Exchange Program/Educational Resource Development Trust (ERDT) for several years, and she appreciates the relationships she has developed with high school students from other countries. “I keep in touch with all the students we have hosted,” said Portales, SHARE! exchange program coordinator.

Tim Duellberg from Germany was the 10th student to stay in the Portaleses’ home. He arrived in August of 2022 and only left for home in late June of 2023. Javier Heredia de Leon from Spain is due to arrive in her home in August.

Portales pointed out that SHARE! has enjoyed support from the ELANCO School District (ESD).

“We had eight (students in ESD) last year,” said Portales, who noted she can take three more students in ESD for the 2023-24 school year.

“Garden Spot High School (GSHS)

really appreciates the value (of SHARE!),” she noted, adding that at the 2023 GSHS graduation ceremony, principal Matt Sanger said that he feels student exchange programs are beneficial to the student body and the community.

According to Portales, hosting is not difficult. “Host families are asked to provide basic room and board in a welcoming home where the student can be comfortable,” she said. “Students come with their own medical insurance and funds to cover personal expenses or extracurricular things.” Portales noted that a private room for the student is not a requirement. “They don’t have to have their own bedroom,” she noted, adding that some of her family’s best experiences occurred when her oldest son shared a room with another student. Portales added that host families run the gamut from those who have small children to those who have no children living at home. Sally Winchell is senior queen

“When I commit to a goal, I want to see it through to the end,” said Sally Winchell, who was crowned Ms. Pennsylvania Senior America 2023 in Harrisburg on June 4. “With this pageant, I was all in.”

Sally first heard of the pageant last February when a friend, who served as Ms. Pennsylvania Senior America in 2021, invited her to a meet-and-greet. Sally met the current and past Pennsylvania queens, along with one who was a national winner. “It was fact-finding,” reported Sally, who noted any lady who has reached the age

of elegance - age 60 and up - is eligible to take part.

An application, including biographical information, was necessary to compete. Sally explained that the purpose is to give older women a “chance to display their inner beauty, talent, and elegance.” She added that the pageant honors the achievements of senior women and motivates and encourages them to utilize their full potential and share their positive outlook on life with others. “It’s not just a beauty pageant,” she pointed out. “It’s more about your achievements, goals, and what you stand for. It gave me an opportunity to reflect.”

While host families are welcome to organize activities with their exchange student, the regional office in Bowmansville offers several trips and other experiences. “We try to do one activity per month,” reported Portales, who noted that activities are optional for students. “We go to New York (City) around Christmas, Philadelphia in the fall, and (Washington), D.C., in the spring. This year, we did a second trip to New York City in the spring to bike through Central Park.” Portales said that a fall harvest experience, which she often hosts, includes carving pumpkins and creating and trying traditional autumn treats such as making candy apples. “When they arrive in August, the first

activity might be kayaking at French Creek,” she said.

Earlier this year, Portales visited Spain and Paris and spent time with the exchange students she knew from the program. “The hospitality was incredible. It was amazing,” she recalled, adding, “(Hosting a student) is for anybody who has a sense of adventure and willingness to share their lives.”

afternoon session will be directed at health care and senior care workers, and it will delve into advanced assessment methods and tools for working with those in late stages of dementia.

Snow is an occupational therapist with more than 40 years of clinical and academic experience. She has developed a trademarked model for understanding the progress of dementia and created the Positive Approach to Care training strategies. Karick emphasized that Snow’s presentations are effective because she gauges the audience and moves in the direction she feels will best serve them.

“One of the things she really stresses is the positive approach and getting to know the environment and the surroundings,” said Karick, noting that taking a breath and assessing the unique approach required by the situation is paramount. “Look at what is going on with that person,” Karick explained. “Are they in fight, fright, flight?” Next, Karick said, caregivers should use their words, tone of voice, and facial expressions to make it clear that they stand in support. “Make it known you are on their side,” she said.

“I always leave with an ‘aha’ moment,” said Karick of Snow’s seminars. “It’s not always rocket science, but rather, ‘I never thought of it that way,’” added Karick, pointing out that the training can be used in situations beyond caring for someone with demen-

tia. “It’s very (applicable) to everyday life,” she said.

For those who are new to understanding dementia, Karick said that it is an umbrella term. “Think about flowers. There are petunias, roses. They are all flowers,” she said. “Dementia is not a diagnosis, and it is not memory loss,” she noted, adding that remembering whether or not you drove to a location might signal a dementia issue, whereas remembering where you parked your car generally does not.

There is a per session charge with an extra cost for an optional lunch. Readers are encouraged to register at www.dementiafriendly lancaster.org. Last year’s seminars sold out.

Celebrating Aaron’s Acres at 25

When Risa Paskoff’s children were small, she almost never got to read the Sunday paper, but on one Sunday in early 1989, Risa noticed an article about Janiece Seldomridge, who was raising her autistic son, Aaron. “I said to the kids, ‘Give me a second to

read this story,’” recalled Risa, who specifically remembered one line from the article that read, “(Seldomridge) and a group of parents want to start a camp program (for their children with disabilities).” “I needed to find out about that,” Risa said. “That was my dream.”

Risa met with the group of

parents several times and eventually became the director of Aaron’s Acres, an organization that bears the name of Seldomridge’s son and provides socialization and recreation for children and young adults with special needs.

For the evening event, doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the celebration for guests age 18 and older will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. The Mama Tried Band will play and a mentalist from Philadelphia will stroll through the gathering inter-

acting with guests. Food will include heavy appetizers and beverages by Cracked Pepper Catering. Risa noted that silent auctions will be held during the afternoon and evening events, along with a Fund-a-Need opportunity. “Two parents will speak, and there will be a brief presentation (in the evening),” said Risa, who added that attire will be dressy casual. Tickets, which are necessary to attend either event, may be purchased at www.aarons acres.org by Monday, Aug. 14.

Risa recalled identifying her first career choice at an early age. “When I was 9, I volunteered to help in the classroom for students with disabilities instead of going out to recess,” she stated. “When I was 16, I worked at a (Young Men’s Hebrew Association (YMHA)) day camp for kids with disabilities in New York.”

In that position, Risa recognized the possibilities a camp atmosphere could offer. “I saw the power of focusing on therapy, communication, and socialization but in a fun setting,” she said.

After earning her master’s degree in social work, Risa worked in a hospital setting. At age 24, she contacted the camp where she had been previously employed and learned the organizaton was looking for a program director. She filled that position, but resigned later when her husband, Jack, a rabbi, began leading a synagogue in New Jersey. Not long after, she was rehired and commuted from her new home to the YMHA until her first child was born. When her family moved to Lancaster, she had her own therapy practice for children until after becoming the director for Aaron’s Acres.

Aaron’s Acres has been offering camping experiences for individuals with special needs for 25 years.

Looking back, Sally noted that many of her achievements helped her build toward taking part in the pageant. Raised in Bowmansville, she moved to Terre Hill as an adult and was active in New Holland, teaching at a local dance studio and later owning Class Act Dance Studio. She became a personal trainer and started her own nutrition counseling business, and she competed as a female body builder. In 2012, Sally moved to

the Millersville area with her husband, George, and she is employed at Bright Side Opportunities Center specializing in senior health and fitness.

Sally said that the pageant included a brief interview with the judges; a talent competition, for which she performed a professionally choreographed jazz dance; and an evening gown competition, during which each contestant presented her philosophy of life. Writing her phi-

losophy intrigued Sally.

“When I was preparing I spent a lot of time thinking about why I was put on this Earth. What do I do? What do I represent?” she said. In the allotted 35 seconds, Sally discussed her daily chances to motivate and inspire others through strength training and healthy eating. “(Those are) the keystone to healthy senior years,” she said. “We need not accept what we think old age should look and feel like. We need to be strong, energetic, and engaged in life.” Sally noted

she is proud of what she wrote. “It’s what I live,” she said. “I live to bring a better life to others.”

When Sally was named Ms. Pennsylvania Senior America 2023, she received a crown and a sash to wear during public appearances. She will represent the state in the national competition in Atlantic City, N.J., from Sunday, Oct. 15, through Thursday, Oct. 19. Sally is available to speak to women’s groups or to help with events.
